NEW JERUSALEMDOUAI-RHEIMS
God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, 'Breed, multiply and fil the earth.1 And God blessed Noe and his sons. And he said to them: Increase and multiply, and fill the earth.
Be the terror and the dread of al the animals on land and al the birds of heaven, of everything thatmoves on land and all the fish of the sea; they are placed in your hands.2 And let the fear and dread of you be upon all the beasts of the earth, and upon all the fowls of the air, and all that move upon the earth: all the fishes of the sea are delivered into your hand.
Every living thing that moves wil be yours to eat, no less than the foliage of the plants. I give youeverything,3 And every thing that moveth and liveth shall be meat for you: even as the green herbs have I delivered them all to you:
with this exception: you must not eat flesh with life, that is to say blood, in it.4 Saving that flesh with blood you shall not eat.
And I shal demand account of your life-blood, too. I shall demand it of every animal, and of man. Ofman as regards his fel ow-man, I shal demand account for human life.5 For I will require the blood of your lives at the hand of every beast, and at the hand of man, at the hand of every man, and of his brother, will I require the life of man.
He who sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for in the image of God was mancreated.6 Whosoever shall shed man's blood, his blood shall be shed: for man was made to the image of God.
Be fruitful then and multiply, teem over the earth and subdue it!'7 But increase you and multiply, and go upon the earth, and fill it.
God spoke as fol ows to Noah and his sons,8 This also said God to Noe, and to his sons with him,
'I am now establishing my covenant with you and with your descendants to come,9 Behold I will establish my covenant with you, and with your seed after you:
and with every living creature that was with you: birds, cattle and every wild animal with you;everything that came out of the ark, every living thing on earth.10 And with every living soul that is with you, as well in all birds as in cattle and beasts of the earth, that are come forth out of the ark, and in all the beasts of the earth.
And I shal maintain my covenant with you: that never again shal all living things be destroyed by thewaters of a flood, nor shal there ever again be a flood to devastate the earth.'11 I will establish my covenant with you, and all flesh shall be no more destroyed with the waters of a flood, neither shall there be from henceforth a flood to waste the earth.
'And this', God said, 'is the sign of the covenant which I now make between myself and you and everyliving creature with you for al ages to come:12 And God said: This is the sign of the covenant which I will give between me and you, and to every living soul that is with you, for perpetual generations.
I now set my bow in the clouds and it wil be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.13 I will set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be the sign of a covenant between me, and between the earth.
When I gather the clouds over the earth and the bow appears in the clouds,14 And when I shall cover the sky with clouds, my bow shall appear in the clouds:
I shal recall the covenant between myself and you and every living creature, in a word al living things, and never again will the waters become a flood to destroy al living things.15 And I will remember my covenant with you, and with every living soul that beareth flesh: and there shall no more be waters of a flood to destroy all flesh.
When the bow is in the clouds I shall see it and call to mind the eternal covenant between God andevery living creature on earth, that is, al living things.'16 And the bow shall be in the clouds, and I shall see it, and shall remember the everlasting covenant, that was made between God and every living soul of all flesh which is upon the earth.
'That', God told Noah, 'is the sign of the covenant I have established between myself and al livingthings on earth.'17 And God said to Noe: This shall be the sign of the covenant which I have established between me and all flesh upon the earth.
The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham and Japheth-Ham being the father ofCanaan.18 And the sons of Noe who came out of the ark, were Sem, Cham, and Japheth: and Cham is the father of Chanaan.
These three were Noah's sons, and from these the whole earth was peopled.19 These three are the sons of Noe: and from these was all mankind spread over the whole earth.
Noah, a til er of the soil, was the first to plant the vine.20 And Noe, a husbandman, began to till the ground, and planted a vineyard.
He drank some of the wine, and while he was drunk, he lay uncovered in his tent.21 And drinking of the wine was made drunk, and was uncovered in his tent.
Ham, father of Canaan, saw his father naked and told his two brothers outside.22 Which when Cham the father of Chaanan had seen, to wit, that his father's nakedness was uncovered, he told it to his two brethren without.
Shem and Japheth took a cloak and they both put it over their shoulders, and walking backwards, covered their father's nakedness; they kept their faces turned away, and they did not look at their father naked.23 But Sem and Japheth put a cloak upon their shoulders, and going backward, covered the nakedness of their father: and their faces were turned away, and they saw not their father's nakedness.
When Noah awoke from his stupor he learned what his youngest son had done to him,24 And Noe awaking from the wine, when he had learned what his younger son had done to him,
and said: Accursed be Canaan, he shal be his brothers' meanest slave.25 He said: Cursed be Chaanan, a servant of servants, shall he be unto his brethren.
He added: Blessed be Yahweh, God of Shem, let Canaan be his slave!26 And he said: Blessed be the Lord God of Sem, be Chanaan his servant.
May God make space for Japheth, may he live in the tents of Shem, and let Canaan be his slave!27 May God enlarge Japheth, and may he dwell in the tents of Sem, and Chanaan be his servant.
After the flood Noah lived three hundred and fifty years.28 And Noe lived after the flood three hundred and fifty years:
In al , Noah's life lasted nine hundred and fifty years; then he died.29 And all his days were in the whole nine hundred and fifty years: and he died.
