NEW JERUSALEMNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, 'Breed, multiply and fil the earth.1 God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them: "Be fertile and multiply and fill the earth.
Be the terror and the dread of al the animals on land and al the birds of heaven, of everything thatmoves on land and all the fish of the sea; they are placed in your hands.2 Dread fear of you shall come upon all the animals of the earth and all the birds of the air, upon all the creatures that move about on the ground and all the fishes of the sea; into your power they are delivered.
Every living thing that moves wil be yours to eat, no less than the foliage of the plants. I give youeverything,3 Every creature that is alive shall be yours to eat; I give them all to you as I did the green plants.
with this exception: you must not eat flesh with life, that is to say blood, in it.4 Only flesh with its lifeblood still in it you shall not eat.
And I shal demand account of your life-blood, too. I shall demand it of every animal, and of man. Ofman as regards his fel ow-man, I shal demand account for human life.5 For your own lifeblood, too, I will demand an accounting: from every animal I will demand it, and from man in regard to his fellow man I will demand an accounting for human life.
He who sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for in the image of God was mancreated.6 If anyone sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; For in the image of God has man been made.
Be fruitful then and multiply, teem over the earth and subdue it!'7 Be fertile, then, and multiply; abound on earth and subdue it."
God spoke as fol ows to Noah and his sons,8 God said to Noah and to his sons with him:
'I am now establishing my covenant with you and with your descendants to come,9 "See, I am now establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you
and with every living creature that was with you: birds, cattle and every wild animal with you;everything that came out of the ark, every living thing on earth.10 and with every living creature that was with you: all the birds, and the various tame and wild animals that were with you and came out of the ark.
And I shal maintain my covenant with you: that never again shal all living things be destroyed by thewaters of a flood, nor shal there ever again be a flood to devastate the earth.'11 I will establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all bodily creatures be destroyed by the waters of a flood; there shall not be another flood to devastate the earth."
'And this', God said, 'is the sign of the covenant which I now make between myself and you and everyliving creature with you for al ages to come:12 God added: "This is the sign that I am giving for all ages to come, of the covenant between me and you and every living creature with you:
I now set my bow in the clouds and it wil be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.13 I set my bow in the clouds to serve as a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.
When I gather the clouds over the earth and the bow appears in the clouds,14 When I bring clouds over the earth, and the bow appears in the clouds,
I shal recall the covenant between myself and you and every living creature, in a word al living things, and never again will the waters become a flood to destroy al living things.15 I will recall the covenant I have made between me and you and all living beings, so that the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all mortal beings.
When the bow is in the clouds I shall see it and call to mind the eternal covenant between God andevery living creature on earth, that is, al living things.'16 As the bow appears in the clouds, I will see it and recall the everlasting covenant that I have established between God and all living beings--all mortal creatures that are on earth."
'That', God told Noah, 'is the sign of the covenant I have established between myself and al livingthings on earth.'17 God told Noah: "This is the sign of the covenant I have established between me and all mortal creatures that are on earth."
The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham and Japheth-Ham being the father ofCanaan.18 The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham and Japheth. (Ham was the father of Canaan.)
These three were Noah's sons, and from these the whole earth was peopled.19 These three were the sons of Noah, and from them the whole earth was peopled.
Noah, a til er of the soil, was the first to plant the vine.20 Now Noah, a man of the soil, was the first to plant a vineyard.
He drank some of the wine, and while he was drunk, he lay uncovered in his tent.21 When he drank some of the wine, he became drunk and lay naked inside his tent.
Ham, father of Canaan, saw his father naked and told his two brothers outside.22 Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father's nakedness, and he told his two brothers outside about it.
Shem and Japheth took a cloak and they both put it over their shoulders, and walking backwards, covered their father's nakedness; they kept their faces turned away, and they did not look at their father naked.23 Shem and Japheth, however, took a robe, and holding it on their backs, they walked backward and covered their father's nakedness; since their faces were turned the other way, they did not see their father's nakedness.
When Noah awoke from his stupor he learned what his youngest son had done to him,24 When Noah woke up from his drunkenness and learned what his youngest son had done to him,
and said: Accursed be Canaan, he shal be his brothers' meanest slave.25 he said: "Cursed be Caanan! The lowest of slaves shall he be to his brothers."
He added: Blessed be Yahweh, God of Shem, let Canaan be his slave!26 He also said: "Blessed be the LORD, the God of Shem! Let Canaan be his slave.
May God make space for Japheth, may he live in the tents of Shem, and let Canaan be his slave!27 May God expand Japheth, so that he dwells among the tents of Shem; and let Canaan be his slave."
After the flood Noah lived three hundred and fifty years.28 Noah lived three hundred and fifty years after the flood.
In al , Noah's life lasted nine hundred and fifty years; then he died.29 The whole lifetime of Noah was nine hundred and fifty years; then he died.
