Romans 11

1 I ask, then, has God rejected his people? Of course not! For I too am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.	1 Domando, allora: «Ha forse Iddio rigettato il suo popolo?» Certamente no! Non sono anch’io israelita, della stirpe di Abramo, della tribù di Beniamino?
2 God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. Do you not know what the scripture says about Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel?	2 No, Dio non ha ripudiato il suo popolo che precedentemente conobbe. Cosa dice la Scrittura nel brano di Elia quando egli si intrattiene con Dio contro Israele?
3 "Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have torn down your altars, and I alone am left, and they are seeking my life."	3 Signore, hanno ucciso i tuoi profeti e abbattuto i tuoi altari; io son rimasto solo e anche a me cercano di togliere la vita.
4 But what is God's response to him? "I have left for myself seven thousand men who have not knelt to Baal."	4 Ma che gli risponde l’oracolo divino? Mi son riservato settemila uomini, che non hanno piegato il ginocchio davanti a Baal.
5 So also at the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace.	5 Parimente è rimasto anche ora un resto eletto per grazia.
6 But if by grace, it is no longer because of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace.	6 E se lo è per grazia, non lo è allora in base alle opere; altrimenti la grazia non sarebbe più grazia.
7 What then? What Israel was seeking it did not attain, but the elect attained it; the rest were hardened,	7 Che ne segue dunque? Ciò che Israele cerca, questo non l’ha conseguito, ma lo hanno conseguito gli eletti; quanto agli altri, essi furono induriti
8 as it is written: "God gave them a spirit of deep sleep, eyes that should not see and ears that should not hear, down to this very day."	8 secondo la parola della Scrittura: Iddio ha dato loro uno spirito di torpore: occhi per non vedere e orecchi per non sentire, sino al giorno d’oggi.
9 And David says: "Let their table become a snare and a trap, a stumbling block and a retribution for them;	9 E Davide soggiunge:La loro mensa diventi una trappola e un laccio e un inciampo e una giusta punizione;
10 let their eyes grow dim so that they may not see, and keep their backs bent forever."	10 si offuschino i loro occhi per non vederci, fa’ loro curvare senza posa la schiena.
11 Hence I ask, did they stumble so as to fall? Of course not! But through their transgression salvation has come to the Gentiles, so as to make them jealous.	11 Mi chiedo ancora: «Inciamparono dunque proprio per cadere?» Assolutamente no! Per la loro caduta i pagani ebbero la salvezza, onde muoverli così a gelosia.
12 Now if their transgression is enrichment for the world, and if their diminished number is enrichment for the Gentiles, how much more their full number.	12 Che se la loro caduta divenne una ricchezza per il mondo e il loro fallimento una ricchezza per i pagani, quanto non lo sarà di più la conversione della massa?
13 Now I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am the apostle to the Gentiles, I glory in my ministry	13 Dichiaro ora a voi, o pagani: quale apostolo dei pagani voglio far onore al mio ministero
14 in order to make my race jealous and thus save some of them.	14 per cercare, se possibile, di muovere a gelosia ci del mio sangue e per salvarne alcuni,
15 For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?	15 Poiché, di nuovo, se il loro ripudio divenne riconciliazione per il mondo, che altro sarà la loro ammissione se non una risurrezione dai morti?
16 If the firstfruits are holy, so is the whole batch of dough; and if the root is holy, so are the branches.	16 Se è santa la primizia, lo è altresì la massa; e se santa è la radice, lo sono anche i rami.
17 But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, a wild olive shoot, were grafted in their place and have come to share in the rich root of the olive tree,	17 Che se alcuni dei rami furono stroncati, e se tu, ulivo selvatico qual eri, fosti innestato tra essi e fatto partecipe della linfa della radice e del pingue succo dell’ulivo,
18 do not boast against the branches. If you do boast, consider that you do not support the root; the root supports you.	18 non ti insuperbire in confronto ai rami; qualora ti insuperbissi, sappi che non sei tu a reggere la radice, ma che è la radice che regge te.
19 Indeed you will say, "Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in."	19 Tu puoi ben dire: «I rami furono troncati, perché fossi innestato io».
20 That is so. They were broken off because of unbelief, but you are there because of faith. So do not become haughty, but stand in awe.	20 Sì, ma furono troncati per la loro incredulità; e tu sei stabile, ma grazie alla fede. Non nutrire sentimenti di alterigia, trepida piuttosto;
21 For if God did not spare the natural branches, (perhaps) he will not spare you either.	21 poiché se Dio non ha risparmiato i rami naturali, non risparmierà neppure te.
22 See, then, the kindness and severity of God: severity toward those who fell, but God's kindness to you, provided you remain in his kindness; otherwise you too will be cut off.	22 Medita dunque la bontà e la severità di Dio: severità verso quelli che son caduti, bontà di Dio verso di te. Ma solo se persisti nella sua bontà; chè altrimenti tu pure sarai reciso.
23 And they also, if they do not remain in unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again.	23 E quelli, d’altronde, se non persistono nell’incredulità saranno reinnestati, essendo Dio abbastanza potente per farlo.
24 For if you were cut from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and grafted, contrary to nature, into a cultivated one, how much more will they who belong to it by nature be grafted back into their own olive tree.	24 Tu, tagliato dall’ulivo selvatico a cui appartenevi per natura, fosti innestato, contro tua natura, sull’ulivo domestico; a più forte ragione quindi saranno innestati sul proprio ulivo costoro che ne sono i rami naturali.
25 I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery, brothers, so that you will not become wise (in) your own estimation: a hardening has come upon Israel in part, until the full number of the Gentiles comes in,	25 Non voglio, o fratelli, che ignoriate questo mistero, affinché non vi riputiate saggi ai vostri occhi; l’ostinazione di una parte di Israele si avrà fino a che l’insieme dei pagani non sia entrato.
26 and thus all Israel will be saved, as it is written: "The deliverer will come out of Zion, he will turn away godlessness from Jacob;	26 In tal modo tutto Israele sarà salvato, secondo quanto sta scritto: Verrà da Sion il liberatore ; egli rimuoverà le empietà da Giacobbe.
27 and this is my covenant with them when I take away their sins."	27 È questa sarà la mia alleanza con essi, quando avrò tolto via i loro peccati.
28 In respect to the gospel, they are enemies on your account; but in respect to election, they are beloved because of the patriarchs.	28 Di fronte all’evangelo essi sono certo dei nemici, e vostro bene; per scelta però; a motivo dei loro padri, essi sono dei prediletti,
29 For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable.	29 giacchè Dio non si pente dei suoi doni e della sua chiamata,
30 Just as you once disobeyed God but have now received mercy because of their disobedience,	30 Come voi un tempo foste disobbedienti a Dio, mentre ora, per la disobbedienza di costoro, avete ottenuto misericordia,
31 so they have now disobeyed in order that, by virtue of the mercy shown to you, they too may (now) receive mercy.	31 questi parimenti, per la misericordia a voi usata, ora si son rifiutati di obbedire, ma solo affinché a loro volta ottengano misericordia.
32 For God delivered all to disobedience, that he might have mercy upon all.	32 Iddio dunque ha racchiuso tutti nella disobbedienza per usare misericordia con tutti.
33 Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How inscrutable are his judgments and how unsearchable his ways!	33 O abisso insondabile della sapienza e della scienza di Dio! Quanto impenetrabili sono i suoi decreti e inesplorabili le sue vie!
34 "For who has known the mind of the Lord or who has been his counselor?"	34 Chi infatti ha mai conosciuto il pensiero del Signore? chi ne fu mai consigliere?
35 "Or who has given him anything that he may be repaid?"	35 chi lo ha prevenuto con i suoi doni, da aver diritto al contraccambio?
36 For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.	36 In realtà tutto viene da lui, avviene grazie a lui e per lui: a lui sia la gloria in eterno. Amen!
