I ask, then, has God rejected his people? Of course not! For I too am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.1 Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see: and bow down their back always.
God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. Do you not know what the scripture says about Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel?2 dummy verses inserted by amos
"Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have torn down your altars, and I alone am left, and they are seeking my life."3 dummy verses inserted by amos
But what is God's response to him? "I have left for myself seven thousand men who have not knelt to Baal."4 dummy verses inserted by amos
So also at the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace.5 dummy verses inserted by amos
But if by grace, it is no longer because of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace.6 dummy verses inserted by amos
What then? What Israel was seeking it did not attain, but the elect attained it; the rest were hardened,7 dummy verses inserted by amos
as it is written: "God gave them a spirit of deep sleep, eyes that should not see and ears that should not hear, down to this very day."8 dummy verses inserted by amos
And David says: "Let their table become a snare and a trap, a stumbling block and a retribution for them;9 dummy verses inserted by amos
let their eyes grow dim so that they may not see, and keep their backs bent forever."10 dummy verses inserted by amos
Hence I ask, did they stumble so as to fall? Of course not! But through their transgression salvation has come to the Gentiles, so as to make them jealous.11 I say then, have they so stumbled, that they should fall? God forbid. But by their offence, salvation is come to the Gentiles, that they may be emulous of them.
Now if their transgression is enrichment for the world, and if their diminished number is enrichment for the Gentiles, how much more their full number.12 Now if the offence of them be the riches of the world, and the diminution of them, the riches of the Gentiles; how much more the fulness of them?
Now I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am the apostle to the Gentiles, I glory in my ministry13 For I say to you, Gentiles: as long indeed as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I will honour my ministry,
in order to make my race jealous and thus save some of them.14 If, by any means, I may provoke to emulation them who are my flesh, and may save some of them.
For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?15 For if the loss of them be the reconciliation of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead?
If the firstfruits are holy, so is the whole batch of dough; and if the root is holy, so are the branches.16 For if the firstfruit be holy, so is the lump also: and if the root be holy, so are the branches.
But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, a wild olive shoot, were grafted in their place and have come to share in the rich root of the olive tree,17 And if some of the branches be broken, and thou, being a wild olive, art ingrafted in them, and art made partaker of the root, and of the fatness of the olive tree,
do not boast against the branches. If you do boast, consider that you do not support the root; the root supports you.18 Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee.
Indeed you will say, "Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in."19 Thou wilt say then: The branches were broken off, that I might be grafted in.
That is so. They were broken off because of unbelief, but you are there because of faith. So do not become haughty, but stand in awe.20 Well: because of unbelief they were broken off. But thou standest by faith: be not highminded, but fear.
For if God did not spare the natural branches, (perhaps) he will not spare you either.21 For if God hath not spared the natural branches, fear lest perhaps he also spare not thee.
See, then, the kindness and severity of God: severity toward those who fell, but God's kindness to you, provided you remain in his kindness; otherwise you too will be cut off.22 See then the goodness and the severity of God: towards them indeed that are fallen, the severity; but towards thee, the goodness of God, if thou abide in goodness, otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.
And they also, if they do not remain in unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again.23 And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be grafted in: for God is able to graft them in again.
For if you were cut from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and grafted, contrary to nature, into a cultivated one, how much more will they who belong to it by nature be grafted back into their own olive tree.24 For if thou wert cut out of the wild olive tree, which is natural to thee; and, contrary to nature, were grafted into the good olive tree; how much more shall they that are the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree?
I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery, brothers, so that you will not become wise (in) your own estimation: a hardening has come upon Israel in part, until the full number of the Gentiles comes in,25 For I would not have you ignorant, brethren, of this mystery, (lest you should be wise in your own conceits), that blindness in part has happened in Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles should come in.
and thus all Israel will be saved, as it is written: "The deliverer will come out of Zion, he will turn away godlessness from Jacob;26 And so all Israel should be saved, as it is written: There shall come out of Sion, he that shall deliver, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob.
and this is my covenant with them when I take away their sins."27 And this is to them my covenant: when I shall take away their sins.
In respect to the gospel, they are enemies on your account; but in respect to election, they are beloved because of the patriarchs.28 As concerning the gospel, indeed, they are enemies for your sake: but as touching the election, they are most dear for the sake of the fathers.
For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable.29 For the gifts and the calling of God are without repentance.
Just as you once disobeyed God but have now received mercy because of their disobedience,30 For as you also in times past did not believe God, but now have obtained mercy, through their unbelief;
so they have now disobeyed in order that, by virtue of the mercy shown to you, they too may (now) receive mercy.31 So these also now have not believed, for your mercy, that they also may obtain mercy.
For God delivered all to disobedience, that he might have mercy upon all.32 For God hath concluded all in unbelief, that he may have mercy on all.
Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How inscrutable are his judgments and how unsearchable his ways!33 O the depth of the riches of the wisdom and of the knowledge of God! How incomprehensible are his judgments, and how unsearchable his ways!
"For who has known the mind of the Lord or who has been his counselor?"34 For who hath known the mind of the Lord? Or who hath been his counsellor?
"Or who has given him anything that he may be repaid?"35 Or who hath first given to him, and recompense shall be made him?
For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.36 For of him, and by him, and in him, are all things: to him be glory for ever. Amen.
