1 Nun geschah es eines Tages, da kamen die Gottessöhne, um vor den Herrn hinzutreten; unter ihnen kam auch der Satan, um vor den Herrn hinzutreten.	1 And it came to pass, when on a certain day the sons of God came, and stood before the Lord, and Satan came among them, and stood in his sight,
2 Da sprach der Herr zum Satan: Woher kommst du? Der Satan antwortete dem Herrn: Die Erde habe ich durchstreift, hin und her.	2 That the Lord said to Satan: Whence comest thou ? And he answered and said: I have gone round about the earth, and walked through it.
3 Der Herr sprach zum Satan: Hast du auf meinen Knecht Ijob geachtet? Seinesgleichen gibt es nicht auf der Erde, so untadelig und rechtschaffen; er fürchtet Gott und meidet das Böse. Noch immer hält er fest an seiner Frömmigkeit, obwohl du mich gegen ihn aufgereizt hast, ihn ohne Grund zu verderben.	3 And the Lord said to Satan: Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a man simple, and upright, and fearing Cod, and avoiding evil, and still keeping his innocence ? But thou hast moved me against him, that I sho uld afflict him without cause.
4 Der Satan antwortete dem Herrn und sagte: Haut um Haut! Alles, was der Mensch besitzt, gibt er hin für sein Leben.	4 And Satan answered, and said: Skin for skin, and all that a man hath he will give for his life:
5 Doch streck deine Hand aus und rühr an sein Gebein und Fleisch; wahrhaftig, er wird dir ins Angesicht fluchen.	5 gut put forth thy hand, and touch his bone and his flesh, and then thou shalt gee that he will bless thee to thy face.
6 Da sprach der Herr zum Satan: Gut, er ist in deiner Hand. Nur schone sein Leben!	6 And the Lord said to Satan: Behold be is in thy hand, but yet save his life.
7 Der Satan ging weg vom Angesicht Gottes und schlug Ijob mit bösartigem Geschwür von der Fußsohle bis zum Scheitel.	7 So Satan went forth from the presence Of the Lord, and struck Job with a very grievous ulcer, from the sole of the foot even to the top of his head:
8 Ijob setzte sich mitten in die Asche und nahm eine Scherbe, um sich damit zu schaben.	8 And he took a potsherd and scraped the corrupt matter, sitting on a dunghill.
9 Da sagte seine Frau zu ihm: Hältst du immer noch fest an deiner Frömmigkeit? Lästere Gott und stirb!	9 And his wife said to him: Dost thou still continue in thy simplicity? bless God and die.
10 Er aber sprach zu ihr: Wie eine Törin redet, so redest du. Nehmen wir das Gute an von Gott, sollen wir dann nicht auch das Böse annehmen? Bei all dem sündigte Ijob nicht mit seinen Lippen.	10 And he said to her: Thou hast; spoken like one of the foolish women: if we have received good things at the hand of God, why should we not receive evil? In all these things Job did not sin with his lips.
11 Die drei Freunde Ijobs hörten von all dem Bösen, das über ihn gekommen war. Und sie kamen, jeder aus seiner Heimat: Elifas aus Teman, Bildad aus Schuach und Zofar aus Naama. Sie vereinbarten hinzugehen, um ihm ihre Teilnahme zu bezeigen und um ihn zu trösten.	11 Now when Job's three friends heard all the evil that had befallen him, they came every one from his own place, Alphas the Themanite, and Baldad the Suhite, and Sophar the Naamathite. For they had made an appointment to come together and visit him, a nd comfort him.
12 Als sie von fern aufblickten, erkannten sie ihn nicht; sie schrien auf und weinten. Jeder zerriss sein Gewand; sie streuten Asche über ihr Haupt gegen den Himmel.	12 And when they had lifted up their eyes afar off, they knew him not, and crying out they wept, and rending their garments they sprinkled dust upon their heads towards heaven.
13 Sie saßen bei ihm auf der Erde sieben Tage und sieben Nächte; keiner sprach ein Wort zu ihm. Denn sie sahen, dass sein Schmerz sehr groß war.	13 And they sat with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no man spoke to him a word: for they saw that his grief was very great.
