1 Aquele que ama seu filho, castiga-o com freqüência, para que se alegre com isso mais tarde, e não tenha de bater à porta dos vizinhos.	1 He who loves his son will frequently chastise him, so that he may be happy in the very end, and not grope for the doors of his neighbors.
2 Aquele que dá ensinamentos a seu filho será louvado por causa dele, e nele mesmo se gloriará entre seus amigos.	2 He who instructs his son will be praised over him and will glory in him, in the midst of his household.
3 Aquele que educa o filho torna o seu inimigo invejoso, e entre seus amigos será honrado por causa dele.	3 He who teaches his son will make his enemy jealous, and in the midst of his friends, he will glory in him.
4 O pai morre, e é como se não morresse, pois deixa depois de si um seu semelhante.	4 When his father has died, it will be as if he were not dead. For he will have left behind someone who is like himself.
5 Durante sua vida viu seu filho e nele se alegrou; quando morrer, não ficará aflito; não terá de que se envergonhar perante seus adversários,	5 In his life, he saw him and rejoiced in him. And at his passing, he was not sorrowful, nor was he confounded in the sight of his enemies.
6 pois deixou em sua casa um defensor contra os inimigos, alguém que manifestará gratidão aos seus amigos.	6 For he left behind himself a defender of his house against his enemies, and someone who will repay his friends with kindness.
7 Aquele que estraga seus filhos com mimos terá que lhes pensar as feridas; a cada palavra suas entranhas se comoverão.	7 For the sake of the souls of his sons, he will bind up his wounds, and at every voice, his gut will be stirred up.
8 Um cavalo indômito torna-se intratável; a criança entregue a si mesma torna-se temerária.	8 An untamed horse becomes stubborn, and a child left to himself becomes headstrong.
9 Adula o teu filho e ele te causará medo; brinca com ele e ele te causará desgosto.	9 Coddle a son, and he will make you afraid. Play with him, and he will make you sorrowful.
10 Não te ponhas a rir com ele, para que não venhas a sofrer com isso, e não acabes rangendo os dentes.	10 You should not laugh with him; otherwise you may have grief, and in the end, your teeth be clenched.
11 Não lhe dês toda a liberdade na juventude, não feches os olhos às suas extravagâncias:	11 You should not give him power in his youth, but you should not despise his thoughts.
12 obriga-o a curvar a cabeça enquanto jovem, castiga-o com varas enquanto ainda é menino, para que não suceda endurecer-se e não queira mais acreditar em ti, e venha a ser um sofrimento para a tua alma.	12 Bow down his neck in his youth, and slap his sides while he is a child, lest perhaps he may become stubborn, and then he will not trust you, and so he will bring sorrow to your soul.
13 Educa o teu filho, esforça-te (por instruí-lo), para que te não desonre com sua vida vergonhosa.	13 Instruct your son, and work with him, lest you give offense by his shameful behavior.
14 Mais vale um pobre sadio e vigoroso, que um rico enfraquecido e atacado de doenças.	14 Better is a healthy pauper with a strong constitution, than a wealthy man who is weak and afflicted by maladies.
15 A saúde da alma na santidade e na justiça vale mais que o ouro e a prata. Um corpo robusto vale mais que imensas riquezas.	15 A healthy soul with the sanctity of justice is better than all the gold and silver. And a sound body is better than immense revenues.
16 Não há maior riqueza que a saúde do corpo; não há prazer que se iguale à alegria do coração.	16 There is no revenue above the revenue of a healthy body. And there is no delight above a joyful heart.
17 Mais vale a morte que uma vida na aflição; e o repouso eterno que um definhamento sem fim.	17 Death is better than a bitter life. And eternal rest is better than continual sickness.
18 Bens escondidos em uma boca fechada são como preparativos de um festim colocados sobre um túmulo.	18 Good things hidden in a closed mouth are like seats at a feast placed around a grave.
19 De que serve ao ídolo a oferenda que lhe fazem? Não pode nem comê-la nem lhe respirar o aroma.	19 What benefit is there in an offering to an idol? For it can neither eat, nor smell.
20 Assim é aquele que o Senhor repele, e que carrega o castigo de seu pecado;	20 So is he who flees from the Lord, carrying the wages of his iniquity.
21 seus olhos vislumbram (o alimento) e ele suspira, assim como suspira o eunuco ao abraçar uma virgem.	21 He sees with his eyes and groans, like a eunuch who embraces a virgin and sighs.
22 Não entregues tua alma à tristeza, não atormentes a ti mesmo em teus pensamentos.	22 You should not give your soul to sadness, and you should not afflict yourself by your own counsel.
23 A alegria do coração é a vida do homem, e um inesgotável tesouro de santidade. A alegria do homem torna mais longa a sua vida.	23 The gladness of the heart is the life of a man, and it is a treasure of sanctity without defect. And the exultation of a man is length of life.
24 Tem compaixão de tua alma, torna-te agradável a Deus, e sê firme; concentra teu coração na santidade, e afasta a tristeza para longe de ti,	24 Take pity on your own soul by pleasing God, and show self-restraint. Gather your heart into his sanctity, and drive sadness far away from yourself.
25 pois a tristeza matou a muitos, e não há nela utilidade alguma.	25 For sadness has killed many, and there is no usefulness in it.
26 A inveja e a ira abreviam os dias, e a inquietação acarreta a velhice antes do tempo.	26 Envy and anger will diminish your days, and pensiveness will bring old age before its time.
27 Um coração bondoso e nobre banqueteia-se continuamente, pois seus banquetes são preparados com solicitude.	27 A cheerful and good heart is like a feast. And its feasts are formed by diligence.
