1 Poi Eliu, continuando a parlare, disse:	1 Continuing in a similar manner, Eliu had this to say:
2 « Sopportami un poco, e t'istruirò, perchè ho ancora da parlare in difesa di Dio.	2 Bear with me for a little while and I will show you; for I have still more to say in favor of God.
3 Prenderò la mia scienza dal suo principio, e proverò che il mio creatore è giusto.	3 I will review my knowledge from the beginning, and I will prove my Maker to be just.
4 Per certo i miei discorsi sono senza menzogna, e la mia perfetta scienza ti sarà provata.	4 For truly my words are without any falsehood and perfect knowledge will be proven to you.
5 Dio non rigetta i potenti, perchè egli stesso è potente,	5 God does not abandon the powerful, for he himself is also powerful.
6 ma non salva gli empi, e fa giustizia ai poveri.	6 But he does not save the impious, though he grants judgment to the poor.
7 Egli non toglie i suoi occhi dal giusto. Egli colloca per sempre i re sul trono ed essi sono esaltati	7 He will not take his eyes away from the just, and he continually establishes kings on their throne, and they are exalted.
8 e se sono stretti in camene e avvinti dai legami della miseria,	8 And, if they are in captivity, or are bound with the chains of poverty,
9 iddio farà loro veder le loro opere, le loro sceleratezze, le loro violenze,	9 he will reveal to them their works, as well as their sinfulness, in that they were violent.
10 aprirà pure loro le orecchie per correggerli, e parlerà loro perchè si ritraggano dall'iniquità.	10 Likewise, he will open their ears to his correction, and he will speak to them, so that they may return from iniquity.
11 Se ascolteranno, e obbediranno, finiranno i loro giorni nella felicità, e i loro anni nella gloria;	11 If they listen and obey, they will fill their days with goodness and complete their years in glory.
12 ma se non ascolteranno, passeran per la spada e periranno nella loro stoltezza.	12 But if they will not listen, they will pass away by the sword and will be consumed by foolishness.
13 I simulatori e i doppi di cuore provocano l'ira di Dio; nè implorano Dio quando sono in catene.	13 The false and the crafty provoke the wrath of God, yet they do not cry out to him when they are chained.
14 La loro anima perirà nella tempesta e la loro vita perirà tra gli effeminati.	14 Their soul will die in a storm, and their life, among the unmanly.
15 Dio libererà il povero dalle strettezze, e gli aprirà l'orecchio nella tribolazione.	15 He will rescue the poor from his anguish, and he will open his ear during tribulation.
16 Egli adunque ti salverà dall'abisso stretto e senza fondo, e ti metterà al laigo, e ti riposerai alla tua mensa, carica di grasse vivande.	16 Therefore, he will save you from the narrow mouth very widely, even though it has no foundation under it. Moreover, your respite at table will be full of fatness.
17 La tua causa è stata giudicata come quella d'un empio: riceverai secondo la causa e la condanna.	17 Your case has been judged like that of the impious; you will withdraw your plea and your judgment.
18 Dunque non ti far prendere dall'ira in modo da opprimere qualcuno, e non andar fuori di strada per la gran quantità dei doni.	18 Therefore, do not let anger overwhelm you so that you oppress another; neither should you allow a multitude of gifts to influence you.
19 Umilia la tua grandezza, senza esservi costretto dalla sferza, ciò che è forte e potente.	19 Lay down your greatness without distress, and put aside all of your power with courage.
20 Non protrarre la notte, affinchè nel luo go di essi salgano i popoli.	20 Do not prolong the night, even if people rise on their behalf.
21 Guardati dall'andar verso l'iniquità, perchè cominciasti a seguirla dopo la miseria.	21 Be careful that you do not turn to iniquity; for, after your misery, you have begun to follow this.
22 Ecco, Dio è sublime nella sua potenza, e nessun dei legislatori è simile a lui.	22 Behold, God is exalted in his strength, and there is no one like him among the law-givers.
23 Chi potrà scrutare le sue vie? Chi può dirgli: Tu hai fatto ingiustizia?	23 Who is able to investigate his ways? And who can say, “You have done iniquity,” to him?
24 Ricordati che tu non comprendi la sua opera, dagli uomini celebrata coi canti.	24 Remember that you are ignorant of his work, yet men have sung its praises.
25 Tutti gli uomini lo vedono, ciascuno lo mira da lungi.	25 All men consider him; and each one ponders from a distance.
26 Ecco, Dio è grande e sorpassa ogni nostra scienza, il numero dei suoi anni è incalcolabile.	26 Behold, God is great, defeating our knowledge; the number of his years is inestimable.
27 Egli distacca le stille della pioggia e versa gli acquazzoni a torrenti,	27 He carries away the drops of rain, and he sends forth showers like a raging whirlpool;
28 che erompono dalle nubi, le quali coprono tutto in alto.	28 they flow from the clouds that are woven above everything.
29 Egli distende quando vuole le nuvole, come la sua tenda,	29 If he wills it, he extends the clouds as his tent
30 e di lassù manda folgori e lampi, e copre gli ultimi lidi del mare.	30 and shines with his light from above; likewise, he covers the oceans within his tent.
31 Con questi mezzi egli giudica i popoli e dà nutrimento a gran numero di morteli.	31 For he judges the people by these things, and he gives food to a multitude of mortals.
32 nelle sue mani nasconde la luce e le comanda di tornare di nuovo.	32 Within his hands, he hides the light, and he commands it to come forth again.
33 Egli fa capire a chi lo ama che essa è in suo dominio e che ad essa può salire ».	33 He announces it to his friend, for it is his possession and he is able to reach out to it.
