BIBBIA RICCIOTTI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 - Prese allora a parlare il Signore a Giobbe dalla procella e disse:	1 Then from the heart of the tempest Yahweh gave Job his answer. He said:
2 «Chi è costui che intreccia sentenze in discorsi da ignorante?	2 Who is this, obscuring my intentions with his ignorant words?
3 Ricingi pur da uomo [prode] i tuoi fianchi, io t'interrogherò e tu rispondimi.	3 Brace yourself like a fighter; I am going to ask the questions, and you are to inform me!
4 Ov'eri tu quando io gettavo le fondamenta della terra? Dimmelo se hai intelligenza.	4 Where were you when I laid the earth's foundations? Tel me, since you are so wel -informed!
5 Chi fissò le sue dimensioni, che tu sappia? ovvero chi stese sovr'essa la livella?	5 Who decided its dimensions, do you know? Or who stretched the measuring line across it?
6 Su che cosa stanno infisse le sue basi, o chi gettò la sua pietra angolare,	6 What supports its pil ars at their bases? Who laid its cornerstone
7 mentre m'innalzavano lodi in coro gli astri del mattino, ed esultavano tutti i figli di Dio?	7 to the joyful concert of the morning stars and unanimous acclaim of the sons of God?
8 Chi rinchiuse con porte il mare, quando eruppe come uscendo dall'utero?	8 Who pent up the sea behind closed doors when it leapt tumultuous from the womb,
9 quando io gli posi una nube come manto, e di caligine l'avvolsi come in fasce:	9 when I wrapped it in a robe of mist and made black clouds its swaddling bands;
10 e lo circondai con i miei confini, mettendovi sbarra ed usci,	10 when I cut out the place I had decreed for it and imposed gates and a bolt?
11 e dissi: - Fin qui verrai, ma non passerai oltre, e qui infrangerai i tuoi orgogliosi flutti? -	11 'Come so far,' I said, 'and no further; here your proud waves must break!'
12 Hai tu forse, dacchè sei nato, dato legge al mattino, e insegnato all'aurora il posto suo?	12 Have you ever in your life given orders to the morning or sent the dawn to its post,
13 sì che tu afferri e scuota i lembi della terra, e faccia sbalzare gli empii da essa:	13 to grasp the earth by its edges and shake the wicked out of it?
14 trasformandosi ella qual creta d'un sigillo, e diventi [rossa] come un vestimento,	14 She turns it as red as a clay seal, she tints it as though it were a dress,
15 venendo sottratta agli empii la loro luce, e il braccio del violento sia spezzato.	15 stealing the light from evil-doers and breaking the arm raised to strike.
16 Sei tu forse entrato nelle profondità del mare, e nel più recondito abisso ti sei tu aggirato?	16 Have you been right down to the sources of the sea and walked about at the bottom of the Abyss?
17 Si sono forse dischiuse per te le porte della morte, e le porte tenebrose hai tu vedute?	17 Have you been shown the gates of Death, have you seen the janitors of the Shadow dark as death?
18 Hai tu considerato la latitudine della terra? Dimmi, se sai tutto questo.	18 Have you an inkling of the extent of the earth? Tell me al about it if you have!
19 Qual è la strada per ove dimora la luce, e la tenebra dove sta di posto?	19 Which is the way to the home of the Light, and where does darkness live? -
20 onde tu conduca ciascuna ai suoi confini, essendo esperto dei sentieri di sua dimora.	20 You could then show them the way to their proper places, you could put them on the path homeagain!
21 Sapevi tu allora che dovevi nascere? e conoscevi tu il numero dei giorni tuoi?	21 If you do know, you must have been born when they were, you must be very old by now!
22 Sei tu entrato nei depositi della neve, e i depositi della grandine hai tu visitati?	22 Have you visited the place where the snow is stored? Have you seen the stores of hail,
23 quelli che ho preparato per i tempi di guerra, per il giorno di mischia e di battaglia?	23 which I keep for times of distress, for days of battle and war?
24 Qual è la via per cui si diffonde la luce, e s'espande il calore sulla terra?	24 From which direction does the lightning fork, where in the world does the east wind blow itself out?
25 Chi ha segnato il corso alla pioggia impetuosa, e la strada al nembo tonante,	25 Who bores a channel for the downpour or clears the way for the rol ing thunder
26 sì che piova su contrada ove l'uomo non è, sul deserto ove nessun mortale dimora,	26 so that rain may fal on lands where no one lives, and the deserts void of human dwel ing,
27 per inondare il luogo impervio e desolatoe far germogliare erbe verdeggianti?	27 to meet the needs of the lonely wastes and make grass sprout on the thirsty ground?
28 Chi è mai il padre della pioggia, o chi ha generato le stille della rugiada?	28 Has the rain a father? Who begets the dewdrops?
29 Dall'utero di chi, è uscito il ghiaccio, e la brina del cielo chi l'ha generata,	29 What womb brings forth the ice, who gives birth to the frost of heaven,
30 [allorchè] come pietra le acque s'induriscono, e la superficie dell'abisso si restringe?	30 when the waters grow hard as stone and the surface of the deep congeals?
31 Puoi tu forse legare le folgoranti stelle Pleiadi, ovver disperdere il giro di Arturo?	31 Can you fasten the harness of the Pleiades, or untie Orion's bands?
32 Fai uscire forse tu la stella mattutina a suo tempo, e quella vespertina fai sorgere sui figli della terra?	32 Can you guide the Crown season by season and show the Bear and its cubs which way to go?
33 Conosci tu forse l'ordine del cielo, e determini la sua influenza sulla terra?	33 Have you grasped the celestial laws? Could you make their writ run on the earth?
34 Alzi tu forse verso la nube la tua voce, affinchè un profluvio d'acqua ti ricopra?	34 Can your voice carry as far as the clouds and make the pent-up waters do your bidding?
35 Scagli tu forse i fulmini, che partanoe ritornando ti dicano: - Eccoci -?	35 Will lightning flashes come at your command and answer, 'Here we are'?
36 Chi ha posto in seno all'uomo la sapienza? ovvero chi ha dato al gallo intelligenza?	36 Who endowed the ibis with wisdom and gave the cock his intel igence?
37 Chi spiegherà la relazione dei cieli, e gli otri dei cieli chi può svuotare,	37 Whose skil details every cloud and tilts the water-skins of heaven
38 allorchè si rassoda [per siccità] la polvere sulla terra, e le zolle si ammassano insieme?	38 until the dust solidifies and the cracks in the ground close up?
39 Prendi tu forse la preda per la leonessa, e la brama dei leoncelli tu sazii,	39 Do you go hunting prey for the lioness; do you satisfy the hunger of young lions
40 allorchè s'accovacciano nelle tane, e da dentro alle caverne stanno ad insidiare?	40 where they crouch in their den, waiting eagerly in the bushes?
41 Chi fornisce nutrimento al corvo, quando i suoi piccoli gridano verso Dio, vagolando perchè non hanno cibo?	41 Who makes provision for the raven when his little ones cry out to God craning their necks in search offood?
