1 Passando vide un uomo cieco dalla nascita	1 As he went along, he saw a man who had been blind from birth.
2 e i suoi discepoli lo interrogarono: "Rabbì, chi ha peccato, lui o i suoi genitori, perché egli nascesse cieco?".	2 His disciples asked him, 'Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he should have been bornblind?'
3 Rispose Gesù: "né lui ha peccato né i suoi genitori, ma è così perché si manifestassero in lui le opere di Dio.	3 'Neither he nor his parents sinned,' Jesus answered, 'he was born blind so that the works of God mightbe revealed in him.
4 Dobbiamo compiere le opere di colui che mi ha mandato finché è giorno; poi viene la notte, quando nessuno può più operare.	4 'As long as day lasts we must carry out the work of the one who sent me; the night wil soon be herewhen no one can work.
5 Finché sono nel mondo, sono la luce del mondo".	5 As long as I am in the world I am the light of the world.'
6 Detto questo sputò per terra, fece del fango con la saliva, spalmò il fango sugli occhi del cieco	6 Having said this, he spat on the ground, made a paste with the spittle, put this over the eyes of the blindman,
7 e gli disse: "Va' a lavarti nella piscina di Sìloe (che significa Inviato)". Quegli andò, si lavò e tornò che ci vedeva.	7 and said to him, 'Go and wash in the Pool of Siloam' (the name means 'one who has been sent'). So hewent off and washed and came back able to see.
8 Allora i vicini e quelli che lo avevano visto prima, poiché era un mendicante, dicevano: "Non è egli quello che stava seduto a chiedere l'elemosina?".	8 His neighbours and the people who used to see him before (for he was a beggar) said, 'Isn't this theman who used to sit and beg?'
9 Alcuni dicevano: "È lui"; altri dicevano: "No, ma gli assomiglia". Ed egli diceva: "Sono io!".	9 Some said, 'Yes, it is the same one.' Others said, 'No, but he looks just like him.' The man himself said,'Yes, I am the one.'
10 Allora gli chiesero: "Come dunque ti furono aperti gli occhi?".	10 So they said to him, 'Then how is it that your eyes were opened?'
11 Egli rispose: "Quell'uomo che si chiama Gesù ha fatto del fango, mi ha spalmato gli occhi e mi ha detto: Va' a Sìloe e lavati! Io sono andato e, dopo essermi lavato, ho acquistato la vista".	11 He answered, 'The man cal ed Jesus made a paste, daubed my eyes with it and said to me, "Go offand wash at Siloam"; so I went, and when I washed I gained my sight.'
12 Gli dissero: "Dov'è questo tale?". Rispose: "Non lo so".	12 They asked, 'Where is he?' He answered, 'I don't know.'
13 Intanto condussero dai farisei quello che era stato cieco:	13 They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind.
14 era infatti sabato il giorno in cui Gesù aveva fatto del fango e gli aveva aperto gli occhi.	14 It had been a Sabbath day when Jesus made the paste and opened the man's eyes,
15 Anche i farisei dunque gli chiesero di nuovo come avesse acquistato la vista. Ed egli disse loro: "Mi ha posto del fango sopra gli occhi, mi sono lavato e ci vedo".	15 so when the Pharisees asked him how he had gained his sight, he said, 'He put a paste on my eyes,and I washed, and I can see.'
16 Allora alcuni dei farisei dicevano: "Quest'uomo non viene da Dio, perché non osserva il sabato". Altri dicevano: "Come può un peccatore compiere tali prodigi?". E c'era dissenso tra di loro.	16 Then some of the Pharisees said, 'That man cannot be from God: he does not keep the Sabbath.'Others said, 'How can a sinner produce signs like this?' And there was division among them.
17 Allora dissero di nuovo al cieco: "Tu che dici di lui, dal momento che ti ha aperto gli occhi?". Egli rispose: "È un profeta!".	17 So they spoke to the blind man again, 'What have you to say about him yourself, now that he hasopened your eyes?' The man answered, 'He is a prophet.'
18 Ma i Giudei non vollero credere di lui che era stato cieco e aveva acquistato la vista, finché non chiamarono i genitori di colui che aveva ricuperato la vista.	18 However, the Jews would not believe that the man had been blind without first sending for the parentsof the man who had gained his sight and
19 E li interrogarono: "È questo il vostro figlio, che voi dite esser nato cieco? Come mai ora ci vede?".	19 asking them, 'Is this man really the son of yours who you say was born blind? If so, how is it that he isnow able to see?'
20 I genitori risposero: "Sappiamo che questo è il nostro figlio e che è nato cieco;	20 His parents answered, 'We know he is our son and we know he was born blind,
21 come poi ora ci veda, non lo sappiamo, né sappiamo chi gli ha aperto gli occhi; chiedetelo a lui, ha l'età, parlerà lui di se stesso".	21 but how he can see, we don't know, nor who opened his eyes. Ask him. He is old enough: let himspeak for himself.'
22 Questo dissero i suoi genitori, perché avevano paura dei Giudei; infatti i Giudei avevano già stabilito che, se uno lo avesse riconosciuto come il Cristo, venisse espulso dalla sinagoga.	22 His parents spoke like this out of fear of the Jews, who had already agreed to ban from the synagogueanyone who should acknowledge Jesus as the Christ.
23 Per questo i suoi genitori dissero: "Ha l'età, chiedetelo a lui!".	23 This was why his parents said, 'He is old enough; ask him.'
24 Allora chiamarono di nuovo l'uomo che era stato cieco e gli dissero: "Dà gloria a Dio! Noi sappiamo che quest'uomo è un peccatore".	24 So the Jews sent for the man again and said to him, 'Give glory to God! We are satisfied that this manis a sinner.'
25 Quegli rispose: "Se sia un peccatore, non lo so; una cosa so: prima ero cieco e ora ci vedo".	25 The man answered, 'Whether he is a sinner I don't know; al I know is that I was blind and now I cansee.'
26 Allora gli dissero di nuovo: "Che cosa ti ha fatto? Come ti ha aperto gli occhi?".	26 They said to him, 'What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?'
27 Rispose loro: "Ve l'ho già detto e non mi avete ascoltato; perché volete udirlo di nuovo? Volete forse diventare anche voi suoi discepoli?".	27 He replied, 'I have told you once and you wouldn't listen. Why do you want to hear it all again? Do youwant to become his disciples yourselves?'
28 Allora lo insultarono e gli dissero: "Tu sei suo discepolo, noi siamo discepoli di Mosè!	28 At this they hurled abuse at him, 'It is you who are his disciple, we are disciples of Moses:
29 Noi sappiamo infatti che a Mosè ha parlato Dio; ma costui non sappiamo di dove sia".	29 we know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this man, we don't know where he comes from.'
30 Rispose loro quell'uomo: "Proprio questo è strano, che voi non sapete di dove sia, eppure mi ha aperto gli occhi.	30 The man replied, 'That is just what is so amazing! You don't know where he comes from and he hasopened my eyes!
31 Ora, noi sappiamo che Dio non ascolta i peccatori, ma se uno è timorato di Dio e fa la sua volontà, egli lo ascolta.	31 We know that God doesn't listen to sinners, but God does listen to people who are devout and do hiswil .
32 Da che mondo è mondo, non s'è mai sentito dire che uno abbia aperto gli occhi a un cieco nato.	32 Ever since the world began it is unheard of for anyone to open the eyes of someone born blind;
33 Se costui non fosse da Dio, non avrebbe potuto far nulla".	33 if this man were not from God, he wouldn't have been able to do anything.'
34 Gli replicarono: "Sei nato tutto nei peccati e vuoi insegnare a noi?". E lo cacciarono fuori.	34 They retorted, 'Are you trying to teach us, and you a sinner through and through ever since you wereborn!' And they ejected him.
35 Gesù seppe che l'avevano cacciato fuori, e incontratolo gli disse: "Tu credi nel Figlio dell'uomo?".	35 Jesus heard they had ejected him, and when he found him he said to him, 'Do you believe in the Sonof man?'
36 Egli rispose: "E chi è, Signore, perché io creda in lui?".	36 'Sir,' the man replied, 'tel me who he is so that I may believe in him.'
37 Gli disse Gesù: "Tu l'hai visto: colui che parla con te è proprio lui".	37 Jesus said, 'You have seen him; he is speaking to you.'
38 Ed egli disse: "Io credo, Signore!". E gli si prostrò innanzi.	38 The man said, 'Lord, I believe,' and worshipped him.
39 Gesù allora disse: "Io sono venuto in questo mondo per giudicare, perché coloro che non vedono vedano e quelli che vedono diventino ciechi".	39 Jesus said: It is for judgement that I have come into this world, so that those without sight may see andthose with sight may become blind.
40 Alcuni dei farisei che erano con lui udirono queste parole e gli dissero: "Siamo forse ciechi anche noi?".	40 Hearing this, some Pharisees who were present said to him, 'So we are blind, are we?'
41 Gesù rispose loro: "Se foste ciechi, non avreste alcun peccato; ma siccome dite: Noi vediamo, il vostro peccato rimane".	41 Jesus replied: If you were blind, you would not be guilty, but since you say, 'We can see,' your guiltremains.
