1 Vi ho detto queste cose perché non abbiate a scandalizzarvi.	1 I have told you al this so that you may not fal away.
2 Vi scacceranno dalle sinagoghe; anzi, verrà l'ora in cui chiunque vi ucciderà crederà di rendere culto a Dio.	2 They wil expel you from the synagogues, and indeed the time is coming when anyone who kills youwil think he is doing a holy service to God.
3 E faranno ciò, perché non hanno conosciuto né il Padre né me.	3 They wil do these things because they have never known either the Father or me.
4 Ma io vi ho detto queste cose perché, quando giungerà la loro ora, ricordiate che ve ne ho parlato. Non ve le ho dette dal principio, perché ero con voi.	4 But I have told you all this, so that when the time for it comes you may remember that I told you. I didnot tell you this from the beginning, because I was with you;
5 Ora però vado da colui che mi ha mandato e nessuno di voi mi domanda: Dove vai?	5 but now I am going to the one who sent me. Not one of you asks, 'Where are you going?'
6 Anzi, perché vi ho detto queste cose, la tristezza ha riempito il vostro cuore.	6 Yet you are sad at heart because I have told you this.
7 Ora io vi dico la verità: è bene per voi che io me ne vada, perché, se non me ne vado, non verrà a voi il Consolatore; ma quando me ne sarò andato, ve lo manderò.	7 Stil , I am telling you the truth: it is for your own good that I am going, because unless I go, theParaclete wil not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.
8 E quando sarà venuto, egli convincerà il mondo quanto al peccato, alla giustizia e al giudizio.	8 And when he comes, he wil show the world how wrong it was, about sin, and about who was in theright, and about judgement:
9 Quanto al peccato, perché non credono in me;	9 about sin: in that they refuse to believe in me;
10 quanto alla giustizia, perché vado dal Padre e non mi vedrete più;	10 about who was in the right: in that I am going to the Father and you will see me no more;
11 quanto al giudizio, perché il principe di questo mondo è stato giudicato.	11 about judgement: in that the prince of this world is already condemned.
12 Molte cose ho ancora da dirvi, ma per il momento non siete capaci di portarne il peso.	12 I still have many things to say to you but they would be too much for you to bear now.
13 Quando però verrà lo Spirito di verità, egli vi guiderà alla verità tutta intera, perché non parlerà da sé, ma dirà tutto ciò che avrà udito e vi annunzierà le cose future.	13 However, when the Spirit of truth comes he will lead you to the complete truth, since he wil not bespeaking of his own accord, but wil say only what he has been told; and he wil reveal to you the things to come.
14 Egli mi glorificherà, perché prenderà del mio e ve l'annunzierà.	14 He wil glorify me, since al he reveals to you wil be taken from what is mine.
15 Tutto quello che il Padre possiede è mio; per questo ho detto che prenderà del mio e ve l'annunzierà.	15 Everything the Father has is mine; that is why I said: all he reveals to you wil be taken from what ismine.
16 Ancora un poco e non mi vedrete; un po' ancora e mi vedrete".	16 In a short time you will no longer see me, and then a short time later you wil see me again.
17 Dissero allora alcuni dei suoi discepoli tra loro: "Che cos'è questo che ci dice: Ancora un poco e non mi vedrete, e un po' ancora e mi vedrete, e questo: Perché vado al Padre?".	17 Then some of his disciples said to one another, 'What does he mean, "In a short time you wil nolonger see me, and then a short time later you wil see me again," and, "I am going to the Father"?
18 Dicevano perciò: "Che cos'è mai questo "un poco" di cui parla? Non comprendiamo quello che vuol dire".	18 What is this "short time"? We don't know what he means.'
19 Gesù capì che volevano interrogarlo e disse loro: "Andate indagando tra voi perché ho detto: Ancora un poco e non mi vedrete e un po' ancora e mi vedrete?	19 Jesus knew that they wanted to question him, so he said, 'You are asking one another what I meantby saying, "In a short time you wil no longer see me, and then a short time later you wil see me again."
20 In verità, in verità vi dico: voi piangerete e vi rattristerete, ma il mondo si rallegrerà. Voi sarete afflitti, ma la vostra afflizione si cambierà in gioia.	20 'In al truth I tell you, you wil be weeping and wailing while the world wil rejoice; you will be sorrowful,but your sorrow wil turn to joy.
21 La donna, quando partorisce, è afflitta, perché è giunta la sua ora; ma quando ha dato alla luce il bambino, non si ricorda più dell'afflizione per la gioia che è venuto al mondo un uomo.	21 A woman in childbirth suffers, because her time has come; but when she has given birth to the childshe forgets the suffering in her joy that a human being has been born into the world.
22 Così anche voi, ora, siete nella tristezza; ma vi vedrò di nuovo e il vostro cuore si rallegrerà e	22 So it is with you: you are sad now, but I shal see you again, and your hearts wil be ful of joy, andthat joy no one shal take from you.
23 nessuno vi potrà togliere la vostra gioia. In quel giorno non mi domanderete più nulla. In verità, in verità vi dico: Se chiederete qualche cosa al Padre nel mio nome, egli ve la darà.	23 When that day comes, you will not ask me any questions. In all truth I tel you, anything you ask fromthe Father he wil grant in my name.
24 Finora non avete chiesto nulla nel mio nome. Chiedete e otterrete, perché la vostra gioia sia piena.	24 Until now you have not asked anything in my name. Ask and you wil receive, and so your joy wil becomplete.
25 Queste cose vi ho dette in similitudini; ma verrà l'ora in cui non vi parlerò più in similitudini, ma apertamente vi parlerò del Padre.	25 I have been tel ing you these things in veiled language. The hour is coming when I shall no longerspeak to you in veiled language but tell you about the Father in plain words.
26 In quel giorno chiederete nel mio nome e io non vi dico che pregherò il Padre per voi:	26 When that day comes you wil ask in my name; and I do not say that I shal pray to the Father for you,
27 il Padre stesso vi ama, poiché voi mi avete amato, e avete creduto che io sono venuto da Dio.	27 because the Father himself loves you for loving me, and believing that I came from God.
28 Sono uscito dal Padre e sono venuto nel mondo; ora lascio di nuovo il mondo, e vado al Padre".	28 I came from the Father and have come into the world and now I am leaving the world to go to theFather.'
29 Gli dicono i suoi discepoli: "Ecco, adesso parli chiaramente e non fai più uso di similitudini.	29 His disciples said, 'Now you are speaking plainly and not using veiled language.
30 Ora conosciamo che sai tutto e non hai bisogno che alcuno t'interroghi. Per questo crediamo che sei uscito da Dio".	30 Now we see that you know everything and need not wait for questions to be put into words; becauseof this we believe that you came from God.'
31 Rispose loro Gesù: "Adesso credete?	31 Jesus answered them: Do you believe at last?
32 Ecco, verrà l'ora, anzi è già venuta, in cui vi disperderete ciascuno per conto proprio e mi lascerete solo; ma io non sono solo, perché il Padre è con me.	32 Listen; the time wil come -- indeed it has come already -- when you are going to be scattered, eachgoing his own way and leaving me alone. And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
33 Vi ho detto queste cose perché abbiate pace in me. Voi avrete tribolazione nel mondo, ma abbiate fiducia; io ho vinto il mondo!".	33 I have told you al this so that you may find peace in me. In the world you wil have hardship, but becourageous: I have conquered the world.
