| 2 Mentre cenavano, quando già il diavolo aveva messo in cuore a Giuda Iscariota, figlio di Simone, di tradirlo, | 2 And during supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him, |
| 3 Gesù sapendo che il Padre gli aveva dato tutto nelle mani e che era venuto da Dio e a Dio ritornava, | 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, |
| 4 si alzò da tavola, depose le vesti e, preso un asciugatoio, se lo cinse attorno alla vita. | 4 rose from supper, laid aside his garments, and girded himself with a towel. |
| 5 Poi versò dell'acqua nel catino e cominciò a lavare i piedi dei discepoli e ad asciugarli con l'asciugatoio di cui si era cinto. | 5 Then he poured water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which he was girded. |
| 6 Venne dunque da Simon Pietro e questi gli disse: "Signore, tu lavi i piedi a me?". | 6 He came to Simon Peter; and Peter said to him, "Lord, do you wash my feet?" |
| 7 Rispose Gesù: "Quello che io faccio, tu ora non lo capisci, ma lo capirai dopo". | 7 Jesus answered him, "What I am doing you do not know now, but afterward you will understand." |
| 8 Gli disse Simon Pietro: "Non mi laverai mai i piedi!". Gli rispose Gesù: "Se non ti laverò, non avrai parte con me". | 8 Peter said to him, "You shall never wash my feet." Jesus answered him, "If I do not wash you, you have no part in me." |
| 9 Gli disse Simon Pietro: "Signore, non solo i piedi, ma anche le mani e il capo!". | 9 Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!" |
| 10 Soggiunse Gesù: "Chi ha fatto il bagno, non ha bisogno di lavarsi se non i piedi ed è tutto mondo; e voi siete mondi, ma non tutti". | 10 Jesus said to him, "He who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but he is clean all over; and you are clean, but not every one of you." |
11 Sapeva infatti chi lo tradiva; per questo disse: "Non tutti siete mondi".

| 13 Voi mi chiamate Maestro e Signore e dite bene, perché lo sono. | 13 You call me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am. |
| 14 Se dunque io, il Signore e il Maestro, ho lavato i vostri piedi, anche voi dovete lavarvi i piedi gli uni gli altri. | 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. |
| 15 Vi ho dato infatti l'esempio, perché come ho fatto io, facciate anche voi. | 15 For I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. |
| 16 In verità, in verità vi dico: un servo non è più grande del suo padrone, né un apostolo è più grande di chi lo ha mandato. | 16 Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. |
| 17 Sapendo queste cose, sarete beati se le metterete in pratica. | 17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. |

| 19 Ve lo dico fin d'ora, prima che accada, perché, quando sarà avvenuto, crediate che Io Sono. | 19 I tell you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he. |
20 In verità, in verità vi dico: Chi accoglie colui che io manderò, accoglie me; chi accoglie me, accoglie colui che mi ha mandato".

| 22 I discepoli si guardarono gli uni gli altri, non sapendo di chi parlasse. | 22 The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. |
| 23 Ora uno dei discepoli, quello che Gesù amava, si trovava a tavola al fianco di Gesù. | 23 One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was lying close to the breast of Jesus; |
| 24 Simon Pietro gli fece un cenno e gli disse: "Di', chi è colui a cui si riferisce?". | 24 so Simon Peter beckoned to him and said, "Tell us who it is of whom he speaks." |

| 26 Rispose allora Gesù: "È colui per il quale intingerò un boccone e glielo darò". E intinto il boccone, lo prese e lo diede a Giuda Iscariota, figlio di Simone. | 26 Jesus answered, "It is he to whom I shall give this morsel when I have dipped it." So when he had dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. |
| 27 E allora, dopo quel boccone, satana entrò in lui. Gesù quindi gli disse: "Quello che devi fare fallo al più presto". | 27 Then after the morsel, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, "What you are going to do, do quickly." |
| 28 Nessuno dei commensali capì perché gli aveva detto questo; | 28 Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. |
| 29 alcuni infatti pensavano che, tenendo Giuda la cassa, Gesù gli avesse detto: "Compra quello che ci occorre per la festa", oppure che dovesse dare qualche cosa ai poveri. | 29 Some thought that, because Judas had the money box, Jesus was telling him, "Buy what we need for the feast"; or, that he should give something to the poor. |
30 Preso il boccone, egli subito uscì. Ed era notte.

| 31 Quand'egli fu uscito, Gesù disse: "Ora il Figlio dell'uomo è stato glorificato, e anche Dio è stato glorificato in lui. | 31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of man glorified, and in him God is glorified; |
| 32 Se Dio è stato glorificato in lui, anche Dio lo glorificherà da parte sua e lo glorificherà subito. | 32 if God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him at once. |
| 33 Figlioli, ancora per poco sono con voi; voi mi cercherete, ma come ho già detto ai Giudei, lo dico ora anche a voi: dove vado io voi non potete venire. | 33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, 'Where I am going you cannot come.' |
| 34 Vi do un comandamento nuovo: che vi amiate gli uni gli altri; come io vi ho amato, così amatevi anche voi gli uni gli altri. | 34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. |
35 Da questo tutti sapranno che siete miei discepoli, se avrete amore gli uni per gli altri".
| 35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." |
| 36 Simon Pietro gli dice: "Signore, dove vai?". Gli rispose Gesù: "Dove io vado per ora tu non puoi seguirmi; mi seguirai più tardi". | 36 Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus answered, "Where I am going you cannot follow me now; but you shall follow afterward." |
| 37 Pietro disse: "Signore, perché non posso seguirti ora? Darò la mia vita per te!". | 37 Peter said to him, "Lord, why cannot I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you." |
| 38 Rispose Gesù: "Darai la tua vita per me? In verità, in verità ti dico: non canterà il gallo, prima che tu non m'abbia rinnegato tre volte". | 38 Jesus answered, "Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, the cock will not crow, till you have denied me three times. |
