1 Queste cose avvennero dopo che Alessandro il Macedone, figlio di Filippo, uscito dalla regione dei Kittim sconfisse Dario, re dei Persiani e dei Medi, e regnò al suo posto, cominciando dalla Grecia.	1 After Alexander the Macedonian, Philip's son, who came from the land of Kittim, had defeated Darius, king of the Persians and Medes, he became king in his place, having first ruled in Greece.
2 Intraprese molte guerre, si impadronì di fortezze e uccise i re della terra;	2 He fought many campaigns, captured fortresses, and put kings to death.
3 arrivò sino ai confini della terra e raccolse le spoglie di molti popoli. La terra si ridusse al silenzio davanti a lui; il suo cuore si esaltò e si gonfiò di orgoglio.	3 He advanced to the ends of the earth, gathering plunder from many nations; the earth fell silent before him, and his heart became proud and arrogant.
4 Radunò forze ingenti e conquistò regioni, popoli e principi, che divennero suoi tributari.	4 He collected a very strong army and conquered provinces, nations, and rulers, and they became his tributaries.
5 Dopo questo cadde ammalato e comprese che stava per morire.	5 But after all this he took to his bed, realizing that he was going to die.
6 Allora chiamò i suoi luogotenenti più importanti, che erano cresciuti con lui fin dalla giovinezza e mentre era ancora vivo divise tra di loro il suo impero.	6 He therefore summoned his officers, the nobles, who had been brought up with him from his youth, to divide his kingdom among them while he was still alive.

10 Uscì da quelli una radice perversa, Antioco Epìfane, figlio del re Antioco che era stato ostaggio a Roma, e assunse il regno nell'anno centotrentasette del dominio dei Greci.	10 There sprang from these a sinful offshoot, Antiochus Epiphanes, son of King Antiochus, once a hostage at Rome. He became king in the year one hundred and thirty-seven of the kingdom of the Greeks.
11 In quei giorni sorsero da Israele figli empi che persuasero molti dicendo: "Andiamo e facciamo lega con le nazioni che ci stanno attorno, perché da quando ci siamo separati da loro, ci sono capitati molti mali".	11 In those days there appeared in Israel men who were breakers of the law, and they seduced many people, saying: "Let us go and make an alliance with the Gentiles all around us; since we separated from them, many evils have come upon us."
12 Parve ottimo ai loro occhi questo ragionamento;	12 The proposal was agreeable;
13 alcuni del popolo presero l'iniziativa e andarono dal re, che diede loro facoltà di introdurre le istituzioni dei pagani.	13 some from among the people promptly went to the king, and he authorized them to introduce the way of living of the Gentiles.

15 e cancellarono i segni della circoncisione e si allontanarono dalla santa alleanza; si unirono alle nazioni pagane e si vendettero per fare il male.	15 They covered over the mark of their circumcision and abandoned the holy covenant; they allied themselves with the Gentiles and sold themselves to wrongdoing.
16 Quando il regno fu consolidato in mano di Antioco, egli volle conquistare l'Egitto per dominare due regni:	16 When his kingdom seemed secure, Antiochus proposed to become king of Egypt, so as to rule over both kingdoms.

19 Espugnarono le fortezze dell'Egitto e Antioco saccheggiò il paese di Egitto.	19 The fortified cities in the land of Egypt were captured, and Antiochus plundered the land of Egypt.
20 Ritornò quindi Antioco dopo aver sconfitto l'Egitto nell'anno centoquarantatré, si diresse contro Israele e mosse contro Gerusalemme con forze ingenti.	20 After Antiochus had defeated Egypt in the year one hundred and forty-three, he returned and went up to Israel and to Jerusalem with a strong force.

25 Allora vi fu lutto grande per gli Israeliti in ogni loro regione.	25 And there was great mourning for Israel, in every place where they dwelt,

Then he attacked the city suddenly, in a great onslaught, and destroyed many of the people in Israel.

33 Poi costruirono attorno alla città di Davide un muro grande e massiccio, con torri solidissime, e questa divenne per loro una fortezza.	33 Then they built up the City of David with a high, massive wall and strong towers, and it became their citadel.
34 Vi stabilirono una razza empia, uomini scellerati, che si fortificarono dentro,	34 There they installed a sinful race, perverse men, who fortified themselves inside it,
35 vi collocarono armi e vettovaglie e, radunato il bottino di Gerusalemme, lo depositarono colà e divennero come una grande trappola;	35 storing up weapons and provisions, and depositing there the plunder they had collected from Jerusalem. And they became a great threat.
36 questo fu un'insidia per il santuario e un avversario maligno per Israele in ogni momento	36 The citadel became an ambush against the sanctuary, and a wicked adversary to Israel at all times.
37 Versarono sangue innocente intorno al santuario e profanarono il luogo santo.	37 And they shed innocent blood around the sanctuary; they defiled the sanctuary.

She became a stranger to her own offspring, and her children forsook her.

41 Poi il re prescrisse con decreto a tutto il suo regno, che tutti formassero un sol popolo	41 Then the king wrote to his whole kingdom that all should be one people,
42 e ciascuno abbandonasse le proprie leggi. Tutti i popoli consentirono a fare secondo gli ordini del re.	42 each abandoning his particular customs. All the Gentiles conformed to the command of the king,
43 Anche molti Israeliti accettarono di servirlo e sacrificarono agli idoli e profanarono il sabato.	43 and many Israelites were in favor of his religion; they sacrificed to idols and profaned the sabbath.
44 Il re spedì ancora decreti per mezzo di messaggeri a Gerusalemme e alle città di Giuda, ordinando di seguire usanze straniere al loro paese,	44 The king sent messengers with letters to Jerusalem and to the cities of Judah, ordering them to follow customs foreign to their land;
45 di far cessare nel tempio gli olocausti, i sacrifici e le libazioni, di profanare i sabati e le feste	45 to prohibit holocausts, sacrifices, and libations in the sanctuary, to profane the sabbaths and feast days,
46 e di contaminare il santuario e i fedeli,	46 to desecrate the sanctuary and the sacred ministers,
47 di innalzare altari, templi ed edicole e sacrificare carni suine e animali immondi,	47 to build pagan altars and temples and shrines, to sacrifice swine and unclean animals,
48 di lasciare che i propri figli, non circoncisi, si contaminassero con ogni impurità e profanazione,	48 to leave their sons uncircumcised, and to let themselves be defiled with every kind of impurity and abomination,
49 così da dimenticare la legge e mutare ogni istituzione,	49 so that they might forget the law and change all their observances.
50 pena la morte a chiunque non avesse agito secondo gli ordini del re.	50 Whoever refused to act according to the command of the king should be put to death.
51 Secondo questi ordini scrisse a tutto il regno, stabilì ispettori su tutto il popolo e intimò alle città di Giuda di sacrificare città per città.	51 Such were the orders he published throughout his kingdom. He appointed inspectors over all the people, and he ordered the cities of Judah to offer sacrifices, each city in turn.
52 Anche molti del popolo si unirono a loro, tutti i traditori della legge, e commisero il male nella regione	52 Many of the people, those who abandoned the law, joined them and committed evil in the land.
53 e ridussero Israele a nascondersi in ogni possibile rifugio.	53 Israel was driven into hiding, wherever places of refuge could be found.
54 Nell'anno centoquarantacinque, il quindici di Casleu il re innalzò sull'altare un idolo. Anche nelle città vicine di Giuda eressero altari	54 On the fifteenth day of the month Chislev, in the year one hundred and forty-five, the king erected the horrible abomination upon the altar of holocausts, and in the surrounding cities of Judah they built pagan altars.
55 e bruciarono incenso sulle porte delle case e nelle piazze.	55 They also burnt incense at the doors of houses and in the streets.
56 Stracciavano i libri della legge che riuscivano a trovare e li gettavano nel fuoco.	56 Any scrolls of the law which they found they tore up and burnt.
57 Se qualcuno veniva trovato in possesso di una copia del libro dell'alleanza o ardiva obbedire alla legge, la sentenza del re lo condannava a morte.	57 Whoever was found with a scroll of the covenant, and whoever observed the law, was condemned to death by royal decree.
58 Con prepotenza trattavano gli Israeliti che venivano scoperti ogni mese nella città	58 So they used their power against Israel, against those who were caught, each month, in the cities.
59 e specialmente al venticinque del mese, quando sacrificavano sull'ara che era sopra l'altare dei sacrifici.	59 On the twenty-fifth day of each month they sacrificed on the altar erected over the altar of holocausts.
60 Mettevano a morte, secondo gli ordini, le donne che avevano fatto circoncidere i loro figli,	60 Women who had had their children circumcised were put to death, in keeping with the decree,

63 e preferirono morire pur di non contaminarsi con quei cibi e non disonorare la santa alleanza; così appunto morirono.	63 they preferred to die rather than to be defiled with unclean food or to profane the holy covenant; and they did die. Terrible affliction was upon Israel.
64 Sopra Israele fu così scatenata un'ira veramente grande.
