1 Rachele, vedendo che non le era concesso di procreare figli a Giacobbe, divenne gelosa della sorella e disse a Giacobbe: "Dammi dei figli, se no io muoio!".	1 Rachel, seeing that she herself gave Jacob no children, became jealous of her sister. And she said toJacob, 'Give me children, or I shal die!'
2 Giacobbe s'irritò contro Rachele e disse: "Tengo forse io il posto di Dio, il quale ti ha negato il frutto del grembo?".	2 This made Jacob angry with Rachel, and he retorted, 'Am I in the position of God, who has denied youmotherhood?'
3 Allora essa rispose: "Ecco la mia serva Bila: unisciti a lei, così che partorisca sulle mie ginocchia e abbia anch'io una mia prole per mezzo di lei".	3 So she said, 'Here is my slave-girl, Bilhah. Sleep with her and let her give birth on my knees; throughher, then, I too shal have children!'
4 Così essa gli diede in moglie la propria schiava Bila e Giacobbe si unì a lei.	4 So she gave him her slave-girl Bilhah as concubine. Jacob slept with her,
5 Bila concepì e partorì a Giacobbe un figlio.	5 and Bilhah conceived and gave birth to a son by Jacob.
6 Rachele disse: "Dio mi ha fatto giustizia e ha anche ascoltato la mia voce, dandomi un figlio". Per questo essa lo chiamò Dan.	6 Then Rachel said, 'God has done me justice; yes, he has heard my prayer and given me a son.'Accordingly she named him Dan.
7 Poi Bila, la schiava di Rachele, concepì ancora e partorì a Giacobbe un secondo figlio.	7 Again Rachel's slave-girl Bilhah conceived and gave birth to a second son by Jacob.
8 Rachele disse: "Ho sostenuto contro mia sorella lotte difficili e ho vinto!". Perciò lo chiamò Nèftali.	8 Then Rachel said, 'I have fought a fateful battle with my sister, and I have won!' So she named himNaphtali.
9 Allora Lia, vedendo che aveva cessato di aver figli, prese la propria schiava Zilpa e la diede in moglie e Giacobbe.	9 Now Leah, seeing that she had ceased to bear children, took her slave-girl Zilpah and gave her toJacob as concubine.

So he slept with her that night.
17 Il Signore esaudì Lia, la quale concepì e partorì a Giacobbe un quinto figlio.	17 God heard Leah, and she conceived and gave birth to a fifth son by Jacob.
18 Lia disse: "Dio mi ha dato il mio salario, per avere io dato la mia schiava a mio marito". Perciò lo chiamò Ìssacar.	18 Then Leah said, 'God has given me my reward for giving my slave-girl to my husband.' So shenamed him Issachar.
19 Poi Lia concepì e partorì ancora un sesto figlio a Giacobbe.	19 Again Leah conceived and gave birth to a sixth son by Jacob,
20 Lia disse: "Dio mi ha fatto un bel regalo: questa volta mio marito mi preferirà, perché gli ho partorito sei figli". Perciò lo chiamò Zàbulon.	20 and said, 'God has given me a fine gift; now my husband wil bring me presents, for I have borne himsix sons.' So she named him Zebulun.
21 In seguito partorì una figlia e la chiamò Dina.	21 Later she gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah.
22 Poi Dio si ricordò anche di Rachele; Dio la esaudì e la rese feconda.	22 Then God remembered Rachel; he heard her and opened her womb.
23 Essa concepì e partorì un figlio e disse: "Dio ha tolto il mio disonore".	23 She conceived and gave birth to a son, and said, 'God has taken away my disgrace!'
24 E lo chiamò Giuseppe dicendo: "Il Signore mi aggiunga un altro figlio!".	24 She named him Joseph, saying, 'May Yahweh add another son for me!'
25 Dopo che Rachele ebbe partorito Giuseppe, Giacobbe disse a Làbano: "Lasciami andare e tornare a casa mia, nel mio paese.	25 When Rachel had given birth to Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, 'Release me and let me go home tomy own country.

28 E aggiunse: "Fissami il tuo salario e te lo darò".	28 So name your wages,' he added, 'and I wil pay.'
29 Gli rispose: "Tu stesso sai come ti ho servito e quanti sono diventati i tuoi averi per opera mia.	29 He replied, 'You know how hard I have worked for you, and how your stock has fared in my charge.
30 Perché il poco che avevi prima della mia venuta è cresciuto oltre misura e il Signore ti ha benedetto sui miei passi. Ma ora, quando lavorerò anch'io per la mia casa?".	30 The little you had before I came has increased enormously, and Yahweh has blessed you wherever Ihave been. When am I to provide for my own household too?'
31 Riprese Làbano: "Che ti devo dare?". Giacobbe rispose: "Non mi devi nulla; se tu farai per me quanto ti dico, ritornerò a pascolare il tuo gregge e a custodirlo.	31 Laban said, 'How much am I to pay you?' Jacob replied, 'You need not pay me anything. I shallchange my mind and go on tending your flock, if you do this one thing for me.
32 Oggi passerò fra tutto il tuo bestiame; metti da parte ogni capo di colore scuro tra le pecore e ogni capo chiazzato e punteggiato tra le capre: sarà il mio salario.	32 'Go through your entire flock today and remove every black animal among the sheep, and everyspeckled or spotted one among the goats. These wil be my wages,
33 In futuro la mia stessa onestà risponderà per me; quando verrai a verificare il mio salario, ogni capo che non sarà punteggiato o chiazzato tra le capre e di colore scuro tra le pecore, se si troverà presso di me, sarà come rubato".	33 and my uprightness wil answer for me later: when you come to check my wages, every goat I havethat is not speckled or spotted, and every sheep that is not black will count as stolen by me.'
34 Làbano disse: "Bene, sia come tu hai detto!".	34 Laban replied, 'Good, just as you say.'
35 In quel giorno mise da parte i capri striati e chiazzati e tutte le capre punteggiate e chiazzate, ogni capo che aveva del bianco e ogni capo di colore scuro tra le pecore. Li affidò ai suoi figli	35 That same day he removed the striped and speckled he-goats and all the spotted and speckled she-goats, every one that had white on it, and al the black sheep, and entrusted these to his sons.

38 Poi egli mise i rami così scortecciati nei truogoli agli abbeveratoi dell'acqua, dove veniva a bere il bestiame, proprio in vista delle bestie, le quali si accoppiavano quando venivano a bere.	38 He set up the shoots he had peeled in front of the animals, in the troughs, in the water-holes wherethe animals came to drink. Since they mated when they came to drink,
39 Così le bestie si accoppiarono di fronte ai rami e le capre figliarono capretti striati, punteggiati e chiazzati.	39 the goats thus mated in front of the shoots and so the goats produced striped, spotted and speckledyoung.
40 Quanto alle pecore, Giacobbe le separò e fece sì che le bestie avessero davanti a sé gli animali striati e tutti quelli di colore scuro del gregge di Làbano. E i branchi che si era così costituiti per conto suo, non li mise insieme al gregge di Làbano.	40 The ewes, on the other hand, Jacob kept apart and made these face whatever was striped or blackin Laban's flock. Thus he built up droves of his own which he did not put with Laban's flocks.
41 Ogni qualvolta si accoppiavano bestie robuste, Giacobbe metteva i rami nei truogoli in vista delle bestie, per farle concepire davanti ai rami.	41 Furthermore, whenever the sturdier animals were mating, Jacob put the shoots where the animalscould see them, in the troughs, so that they would mate in front of the shoots.
42 Quando invece le bestie erano deboli, non li metteva. Così i capi di bestiame deboli erano per Làbano e quelli robusti per Giacobbe.	42 But when the animals were feeble, he did not put them there; so Laban got the feeble, and Jacob thesturdy.
43 Egli si arricchì oltre misura e possedette greggi in grande quantità, schiave e schiavi, cammelli e asini.	43 Thus the man grew extremely rich, and came to own large flocks, men and women slaves, camelsand donkeys.
