| 5 Il y eut aux jours d'Hérode, roi de Judée, un prêtre du nom de Zacharie, de la classe d'Abia, et il avaitpour femme une descendante d'Aaron, dont le nom était Elisabeth. | 5 In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, of the division of Abijah; and he had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. |
| 6 Tous deux étaient justes devant Dieu, et ils suivaient, irréprochables, tous les commandements etobservances du Seigneur. | 6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. |
| 7 Mais ils n'avaient pas d'enfant, parce qu'Elisabeth était stérile et que tous deux étaient avancés en âge. | 7 But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and both were advanced in years. |
| 8 Or il advint, comme il remplissait devant Dieu les fonctions sacerdotales au tour de sa classe, | 8 Now while he was serving as priest before God when his division was on duty, |
| 9 qu'il fut, suivant la coutume sacerdotale, désigné par le sort pour entrer dans le sanctuaire du Seigneur ety brûler l'encens. | 9 according to the custom of the priesthood, it fell to him by lot to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense. |
| 10 Et toute la multitude du peuple était en prière, dehors, à l'heure de l'encens. | 10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense. |
| 11 Alors lui apparut l'Ange du Seigneur, debout à droite de l'autel de l'encens. | 11 And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. |
| 12 A cette vue, Zacharie fut troublé et la crainte fondit sur lui. | 12 And Zechariah was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him. |
| 13 Mais l'ange lui dit: "Sois sans crainte, Zacharie, car ta supplication a été exaucée; ta femme Elisabetht'enfantera un fils, et tu l'appelleras du nom de Jean. | 13 But the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer is heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. |
| 14 Tu auras joie et allégresse, et beaucoup se réjouiront de sa naissance. | 14 And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth; |
| 15 Car il sera grand devant le Seigneur; il ne boira ni vin ni boisson forte; il sera rempli d'Esprit Saint dèsle sein de sa mère | 15 for he will be great before the Lord, and he shall drink no wine nor strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb. |
| 16 et il ramènera de nombreux fils d'Israël au Seigneur, leur Dieu. | 16 And he will turn many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God, |
| 17 Il marchera devant lui avec l'esprit et la puissance d'Elie, pour ramener le coeur des pères vers lesenfants et les rebelles à la prudence des justes, préparant au Seigneur un peuple bien disposé." | 17 and he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready for the Lord a people prepared." |
| 18 Zacharie dit à l'ange: "A quoi connaîtrai-je cela? Car moi je suis un vieillard et ma femme est avancéeen âge." | 18 And Zechariah said to the angel, "How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years." |
| 19 Et l'ange lui répondit: "Moi je suis Gabriel, qui me tiens devant Dieu, et j'ai été envoyé pour te parleret t'annoncer cette bonne nouvelle. | 19 And the angel answered him, "I am Gabriel, who stand in the presence of God; and I was sent to speak to you, and to bring you this good news. |
| 20 Et voici que tu vas être réduit au silence et sans pouvoir parler jusqu'au jour où ces choses arriveront,parce que tu n'as pas cru à mes paroles, lesquelles s'accompliront en leur temps." | 20 And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things come to pass, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time." |
| 21 Le peuple cependant attendait Zacharie et s'étonnait qu'il s'attardât dans le sanctuaire. | 21 And the people were waiting for Zechariah, and they wondered at his delay in the temple. |
| 22 Mais quand il sortit, il ne pouvait leur parler, et ils comprirent qu'il avait eu une vision dans lesanctuaire. Pour lui, il leur faisait des signes et demeurait muet. | 22 And when he came out, he could not speak to them, and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple; and he made signs to them and remained dumb. |
| 23 Et il advint, quand ses jours de service furent accomplis, qu'il s'en retourna chez lui. | 23 And when his time of service was ended, he went to his home. |
| 24 Quelque temps après, sa femme Elisabeth conçut, et elle se tenait cachée cinq mois durant. | 24 After these days his wife Elizabeth conceived, and for five months she hid herself, saying, |
| 25 "Voilà donc, disait-elle, ce qu'a fait pour moi le Seigneur, au temps où il lui a plu d'enlever monopprobre parmi les hommes!" | 25 "Thus the Lord has done to me in the days when he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men." |
| 26 Le sixième mois, l'ange Gabriel fut envoyé par Dieu dans une ville de Galilée, du nom de Nazareth, | 26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, |
| 27 à une vierge fiancée à un homme du nom de Joseph, de la maison de David; et le nom de la vierge étaitMarie. | 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. |
| 28 Il entra et lui dit: "Réjouis-toi, comblée de grâce, le Seigneur est avec toi." | 28 And he came to her and said, "Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!" |
| 29 A cette parole elle fut toute troublée, et elle se demandait ce que signifiait cette salutation. | 29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be. |
| 30 Et l'ange lui dit: "Sois sans crainte, Marie; car tu as trouvé grâce auprès de Dieu. | 30 And the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. |
| 31 Voici que tu concevras dans ton sein et enfanteras un fils, et tu l'appelleras du nom de Jésus. | 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. |
| 32 Il sera grand, et sera appelé Fils du Très-Haut. Le Seigneur Dieu lui donnera le trône de David, sonpère; | 32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, |
| 33 il régnera sur la maison de Jacob pour les siècles et son règne n'aura pas de fin." | 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there will be no end." |
| 34 Mais Marie dit à l'ange: "Comment cela sera-t-il, puisque je ne connais pas d'homme?" | 34 And Mary said to the angel, "How shall this be, since I have no husband?" |
| 35 L'ange lui répondit: "L'Esprit Saint viendra sur toi, et la puissance du Très-Haut te prendra sous sonombre; c'est pourquoi l'être saint qui naîtra sera appelé Fils de Dieu. | 35 And the angel said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. |
| 36 Et voici qu'Elisabeth, ta parente, vient, elle aussi, de concevoir un fils dans sa vieillesse, et elle en est àson sixième mois, elle qu'on appelait la stérile; | 36 And behold, your kinswoman Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. |
| 37 car rien n'est impossible à Dieu." | 37 For with God nothing will be impossible." |
| 38 Marie dit alors: "Je suis la servante du Seigneur; qu'il m'advienne selon ta parole!" Et l'ange la quitta. | 38 And Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word." And the angel departed from her. |
| 39 En ces jours-là, Marie partit et se rendit en hâte vers la région montagneuse, dans une ville de Juda. | 39 In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a city of Judah, |
| 40 Elle entra chez Zacharie et salua Elisabeth. | 40 and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. |
| 41 Et il advint, dès qu'Elisabeth eut entendu la salutation de Marie, que l'enfant tressaillit dans son sein etElisabeth fut remplie d'Esprit Saint. | 41 And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit |
| 42 Alors elle poussa un grand cri et dit: "Bénie es-tu entre les femmes, et béni le fruit de ton sein! | 42 and she exclaimed with a loud cry, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! |
| 43 Et comment m'est-il donné que vienne à moi la mère de mon Seigneur? | 43 And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? |
| 44 Car, vois-tu, dès l'instant où ta salutation a frappé mes oreilles, l'enfant a tressailli d'allégresse en monsein. | 44 For behold, when the voice of your greeting came to my ears, the babe in my womb leaped for joy. |
| 45 Oui, bienheureuse celle qui a cru en l'accomplissement de ce qui lui a été dit de la part du Seigneur!" | 45 And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her from the Lord." |
| 46 Marie dit alors: "Mon âme exalte le Seigneur, | 46 And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord, |
| 47 et mon esprit tressaille de joie en Dieu mon sauveur, | 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, |
| 48 parce qu'il a jeté les yeux sur l'abaissement de sa servante. Oui, désormais toutes les générations mediront bienheureuse, | 48 for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed; |
| 49 car le Tout-Puissant a fait pour moi de grandes choses. Saint est son nom, | 49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. |
| 50 et sa miséricorde s'étend d'âge en âge sur ceux qui le craignent. | 50 And his mercy is on those who fear him from generation to generation. |
| 51 Il a déployé la force de son bras, il a dispersé les hommes au coeur superbe. | 51 He has shown strength with his arm, he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts, |
| 52 Il a renversé les potentats de leurs trônes et élevé les humbles, | 52 he has put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted those of low degree; |
| 53 Il a comblé de biens les affamés et renvoyé les riches les mains vides. | 53 he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent empty away. |
| 54 Il est venu en aide à Israël, son serviteur, se souvenant de sa miséricorde, -- | 54 He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, |
| 55 selon qu'il l'avait annoncé à nos pères - en faveur d'Abraham et de sa postérité à jamais!" | 55 as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his posterity for ever." |
| 56 Marie demeura avec elle environ trois mois, puis elle s'en retourna chez elle. | 56 And Mary remained with her about three months, and returned to her home. |
| 57 Quant à Elisabeth, le temps fut accompli où elle devait enfanter, et elle mit au monde un fils. | 57 Now the time came for Elizabeth to be delivered, and she gave birth to a son. |
| 58 Ses voisins et ses proches apprirent que le Seigneur avait fait éclater sa miséricorde à son égard, et ilss'en réjouissaient avec elle. | 58 And her neighbors and kinsfolk heard that the Lord had shown great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. |
| 59 Et il advint, le huitième jour, qu'ils vinrent pour circoncire l'enfant. On voulait l'appeler Zacharie, dunom de son père; | 59 And on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they would have named him Zechariah after his father, |
| 60 mais, prenant la parole, sa mère dit: "Non, il s'appellera Jean." | 60 but his mother said, "Not so; he shall be called John." |
| 61 Et on lui dit: "Il n'y a personne de ta parenté qui porte ce nom!" | 61 And they said to her, "None of your kindred is called by this name." |
| 62 Et l'on demandait par signes au père comment il voulait qu'on l'appelât. | 62 And they made signs to his father, inquiring what he would have him called. |
| 63 Celui-ci demanda une tablette et écrivit: "Jean est son nom"; et ils en furent tous étonnés. | 63 And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, "His name is John." And they all marveled. |
| 64 A l'instant même, sa bouche s'ouvrit et sa langue se délia, et il parlait et bénissait Dieu. | 64 And immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, blessing God. |
| 65 La crainte s'empara de tous leurs voisins, et dans la montagne de Judée tout entière on racontait toutesces choses. | 65 And fear came on all their neighbors. And all these things were talked about through all the hill country of Judea; |
| 66 Tous ceux qui en entendirent parler les mirent dans leur coeur, en disant: "Que sera donc cet enfant?"Et, de fait, la main du Seigneur était avec lui. | 66 and all who heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, "What then will this child be?" For the hand of the Lord was with him. |
| 67 Et Zacharie, son père, fut rempli d'Esprit Saint et se mit à prophétiser: | 67 And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying, |
| 68 "Béni soit le Seigneur, le Dieu d'Israël, de ce qu'il a visité et délivré son peuple, | 68 "Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people, |
| 69 et nous a suscité une puissance de salut dans la maison de David, son serviteur, | 69 and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David, |
| 70 selon qu'il l'avait annoncé par la bouche de ses saints prophètes des temps anciens, | 70 as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, |
| 71 pour nous sauver de nos ennemis et de la main de tous ceux qui nous haïssent. | 71 that we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all who hate us; |
| 72 Ainsi fait-il miséricorde à nos pères, ainsi se souvient-il de son alliance sainte, | 72 to perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant, |
| 73 du serment qu'il a juré à Abraham, notre père, de nous accorder | 73 the oath which he swore to our father Abraham, |
| 74 que, sans crainte, délivrés de la main de nos ennemis, nous le servions | 74 to grant us that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear, |
| 75 en sainteté et justice devant lui, tout au long de nos jours. | 75 in holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life. |
| 76 Et toi, petit enfant, tu seras appelé prophète du Très-Haut; car tu marcheras devant le Seigneur, pourlui préparer les voies, | 76 And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, |
| 77 pour donner à son peuple la connaissance du salut par la rémission de ses péchés; | 77 to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins, |
| 78 grâce aux sentiments de miséricorde de notre Dieu, dans lesquels nous a visités l'Astre d'en haut, | 78 through the tender mercy of our God, when the day shall dawn upon us from on high |
| 79 pour illuminer ceux qui demeurent dans les ténèbres et l'ombre de la mort, afin de guider nos pas dansle chemin de la paix." | 79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace." |
| 80 Cependant l'enfant grandissait, et son esprit se fortifiait. Et il demeurait dans les déserts jusqu'au jourde sa manifestation à Israël. | 80 And the child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the wilderness till the day of his manifestation to Israel. |
