NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
About times and dates, brothers, there is no need to write to you1 De temporibus autem, et momentis, fratres, non indigetis ut scribamus vobis.
for you are wel aware in any case that the Day of the Lord is going to come like a thief in the night.2 Ipsi enim diligenter scitis quia dies Domini, sicut fur in nocte, ita veniet :
It is when people are saying, 'How quiet and peaceful it is' that sudden destruction fal s on them, assuddenly as labour pains come on a pregnant woman; and there is no escape.3 cum enim dixerint : Pax et securitas : tunc repentinus eis superveniet interitus, sicut dolor in utero habenti, et non effugient.
But you, brothers, do not live in the dark, that the Day should take you unawares like a thief.4 Vos autem, fratres, non estis in tenebris, ut vos dies illa tamquam fur comprehendat :
No, you are al children of light and children of the day: we do not belong to the night or to darkness,5 omnes enim vos filii lucis estis, et filii diei : non sumus noctis, neque tenebrarum.
so we should not go on sleeping, as everyone else does, but stay wide awake and sober.6 Igitur non dormiamus sicut et ceteri, sed vigilemus, et sobrii simus.
Night is the time for sleepers to sleep and night the time for drunkards to be drunk,7 Qui enim dormiunt, nocte dormiunt : et qui ebrii sunt, nocte ebrii sunt.
but we belong to the day and we should be sober; let us put on faith and love for a breastplate, and thehope of salvation for a helmet.8 Nos autem, qui diei sumus, sobrii simus, induti loricam fidei et caritatis, et galeam spem salutis :
God destined us not for his retribution, but to win salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,9 quoniam non posuit nos Deus in iram, sed in acquisitionem salutis per Dominum nostrum Jesum Christum,
who died for us so that, awake or asleep, we should stil live united to him.10 qui mortuus est pro nobis : ut sive vigilemus, sive dormiamus, simul cum illo vivamus.
So give encouragement to each other, and keep strengthening one another, as you do already.11 Propter quod consolamini invicem, et ædificate alterutrum, sicut et facitis.
We appeal to you, my brothers, to be considerate to those who work so hard among you as yourleaders in the Lord and those who admonish you.12 Rogamus autem vos, fratres, ut noveritis eos qui laborant inter vos, et præsunt vobis in Domino, et monent vos,
Have the greatest respect and affection for them because of their work. Be at peace amongyourselves.13 ut habeatis illos abundantius in caritate propter opus illorum : pacem habete cum eis.
We urge you, brothers, to admonish those who are undisciplined, encourage the apprehensive, support the weak and be patient with everyone.14 Rogamus autem vos, fratres, corripite inquietos, consolamini pusillanimes, suscipite infirmos, patientes estote ad omnes.
Make sure that people do not try to repay evil for evil; always aim at what is best for each other and foreveryone.15 Videte ne quis malum pro malo alicui reddat : sed semper quod bonum est sectamini in invicem, et in omnes.
Always be joyful;16 Semper gaudete.
pray constantly;17 Sine intermissione orate.
and for al things give thanks; this is the wil of God for you in Christ Jesus.18 In omnibus gratias agite : hæc est enim voluntas Dei in Christo Jesu in omnibus vobis.
Do not stifle the Spirit19 Spiritum nolite extinguere.
or despise the gift of prophecy with contempt;20 Prophetias nolite spernere.
test everything and hold on to what is good21 Omnia autem probate : quod bonum est tenete.
and shun every form of evil.22 Ab omni specie mala abstinete vos.
May the God of peace make you perfect and holy; and may your spirit, life and body be keptblameless for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.23 Ipse autem Deus pacis sanctificet vos per omnia : ut integer spiritus vester, et anima, et corpus sine querela in adventu Domini nostri Jesu Christi servetur.
He who has cal ed you is trustworthy and wil carry it out.24 Fidelis est, qui vocavit vos : qui etiam faciet.
Pray for us, my brothers.25 Fratres, orate pro nobis.
Greet al the brothers with a holy kiss.26 Salutate fratres omnes in osculo sancto.
My orders, in the Lord's name, are that this letter is to be read to al the brothers.27 Adjuro vos per Dominum ut legatur epistola hæc omnibus sanctis fratribus.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.2Th 1:1 Paul, Silvanus and Timothy, to the Church in Thessalonica which is in God our Father and the LordJesus Christ28 Gratia Domini nostri Jesu Christi vobiscum. Amen.
