1 Thessalonians 5

NEW JERUSALEM	NOVA VULGATA
1 About times and dates, brothers, there is no need to write to you	1 De temporibus autem et mo mentis, fratres, non indigetis, ut scribaturvobis;
2 for you are wel aware in any case that the Day of the Lord is going to come like a thief in the night.	2 ipsi enim diligenter scitis quia dies Domini, sicut fur in nocte, itaveniet.
3 It is when people are saying, 'How quiet and peaceful it is' that sudden destruction fal s on them, assuddenly as labour pains come on a pregnant woman; and there is no escape.	3 Cum enim dixerint: “ Pax et securitas ”, tunc repentinus eissuperveniet interitus, sicut dolor in utero habenti, et non effugient.
4 But you, brothers, do not live in the dark, that the Day should take you unawares like a thief.	4 Vosautem, fratres, non estis in tenebris, ut vos dies ille tamquam furcomprehendat;
5 No, you are al children of light and children of the day: we do not belong to the night or to darkness,	5 omnes enim vos filii lucis estis et filii diei. Non sumus noctisneque tenebrarum;
6 so we should not go on sleeping, as everyone else does, but stay wide awake and sober.	6 igitur non dormiamus sicut ceteri, sed vigilemus et sobriisimus.
7 Night is the time for sleepers to sleep and night the time for drunkards to be drunk,	7 Qui enim dormiunt, nocte dormiunt; et, qui ebrii sunt, nocte inebriantur.
8 but we belong to the day and we should be sober; let us put on faith and love for a breastplate, and thehope of salvation for a helmet.	8 Nos autem, qui diei sumus, sobrii simus, induti loricam fidei et caritatis etgaleam spem salutis;
9 God destined us not for his retribution, but to win salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,	9 quoniam non posuit nos Deus in iram sed in acquisitionemsalutis per Dominum nostrum Iesum Christum,
10 who died for us so that, awake or asleep, we should stil live united to him.	10 qui mortuus est pro nobis, utsive vigilemus sive dormiamus, simul cum illo vivamus.
11 So give encouragement to each other, and keep strengthening one another, as you do already.	11 Propter quodconsolamini invicem et aedificate alterutrum, sicut et facitis.
12 We appeal to you, my brothers, to be considerate to those who work so hard among you as yourleaders in the Lord and those who admonish you.	12 Rogamus autem vos, fratres, ut noveritis eos, qui laborant inter vos etpraesunt vobis in Domino et monent vos,
13 Have the greatest respect and affection for them because of their work. Be at peace amongyourselves.	13 ut habeatis illos superabundanter incaritate propter opus illorum. Pacem habete inter vos.
14 We urge you, brothers, to admonish those who are undisciplined, encourage the apprehensive,support the weak and be patient with everyone.	14 Hortamur autem vos,fratres: corripite inquietos, consolamini pusillanimes, suscipite infirmos,longanimes estote ad omnes.
15 Make sure that people do not try to repay evil for evil; always aim at what is best for each other and foreveryone.	15 Videte, ne quis malum pro malo alicui reddat, sedsemper, quod bonum est, sectamini et in invicem et in omnes.
16 Always be joyful;	16 Semper gaudete,
17 pray constantly;	17 sine intermissione orate,
18 and for al things give thanks; this is the wil of God for you in Christ Jesus.	18 in omnibus gratias agite; haec enim voluntas Deiest in Christo Iesu erga vos.
19 Do not stifle the Spirit	19 Spiritum nolite exstinguere,
20 or despise the gift of prophecy with contempt;	20 prophetiasnolite spernere;
21 test everything and hold on to what is good	21 omnia autem probate, quod bonum est tenete,
22 and shun every form of evil.	22 ab omnispecie mala abstinete vos.
23 May the God of peace make you perfect and holy; and may your spirit, life and body be keptblameless for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.	23 Ipse autem Deus pacis sanctificet vos per omnia, et integer spiritus vesteret anima et corpus sine querela in adventu Domini nostri Iesu Christi servetur.
24 He who has cal ed you is trustworthy and wil carry it out.	24 Fidelis est, qui vocat vos, qui etiam faciet.
25 Pray for us, my brothers.	25 Fratres, orate etiam pro nobis.
26 Greet al the brothers with a holy kiss.	26 Salutate fratres omnes in osculo sancto.
27 My orders, in the Lord's name, are that this letter is to be read to al the brothers.	27 Adiuro vos per Dominum, utlegatur epistula omnibus fratribus.
28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.2Th 1:1 Paul, Silvanus and Timothy, to the Church in Thessalonica which is in God our Father and the LordJesus Christ	28 Gratia Domini nostri Iesu Christivobiscum.
