NEW JERUSALEM	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 After this Jesus travel ed round Galilee; he could not travel round Judaea, because the Jews wereseeking to kil him.	1 Depois disso, Jesus percorria a Galiléia. Ele não queria deter-se na Judéia, porque os judeus procuravam tirar-lhe a vida.
2 As the Jewish feast of Shelters drew near,	2 Aproximava-se a festa dos judeus chamada dos Tabernáculos.
3 his brothers said to him, 'Leave this place and go to Judaea, so that your disciples, too, can see the works you are doing;	3 Seus irmãos disseram-lhe: Parte daqui e vai para a Judéia, a fim de que também os teus discípulos vejam as obras que fazes.
4 no one who wants to be publicly known acts in secret; if this is what you are doing, you should revealyourself to the world.'	4 Pois quem deseja ser conhecido em público não faz coisa alguma ocultamente. Já que fazes essas obras, revela-te ao mundo.
5 Not even his brothers had faith in him.	5 Com efeito, nem mesmo os seus irmãos acreditavam nele.
6 Jesus answered, 'For me the right time has not come yet, but for you any time is the right time.	6 Disse-lhes Jesus: O meu tempo ainda não chegou, mas para vós a hora é sempre favorável.
7 The world cannot hate you, but it does hate me, because I give evidence that its ways are evil.	7 O mundo não vos pode odiar, mas odeia-me, porque eu testemunho contra ele que as suas obras são más.
8 Go up to the festival yourselves: I am not going to this festival, because for me the time is not ripe yet.'	8 Subi vós para a festa. Quanto a mim, eu não irei, porque ainda não chegou o meu tempo.
9 Having said that, he stayed behind in Galilee.	9 Dito isto, permaneceu na Galiléia.
10 However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went up as well, not publicly but secretly.	10 Mas quando os seus irmãos tinham subido, então subiu também ele à festa, não em público, mas despercebidamente.
11 At the festival the Jews were on the look-out for him: 'Where is he?' they said.	11 Buscavam-no os judeus durante a festa e perguntavam: Onde está ele?
12 There was a great deal of talk about him in the crowds. Some said, 'He is a good man'; others, 'No, heis leading the people astray.'	12 E na multidão só se discutia a respeito dele. Uns diziam: É homem de bem. Outros, porém, diziam: Não é; ele seduz o povo.
13 Yet no one spoke about him openly, for fear of the Jews.	13 Ninguém, contudo, ousava falar dele livremente com medo dos judeus.
14 When the festival was half over, Jesus went to the Temple and began to teach.	14 Lá pelo meio da festa, Jesus subiu ao templo e pôs-se a ensinar.
15 The Jews were astonished and said, 'How did he learn to read? He has not been educated.'	15 Os judeus se admiravam e diziam: Este homem não fez estudos. Donde lhe vem, pois, este conhecimento das Escrituras?
16 Jesus answered them: 'My teaching is not from myself: it comes from the one who sent me;	16 Respondeu-lhes Jesus: A minha doutrina não é minha, mas daquele que me enviou.
17 anyone who is prepared to do his wil , wil know whether my teaching is from God or whether I speakon my own account.	17 Se alguém quiser cumprir a vontade de Deus, distinguirá se a minha doutrina é de Deus ou se falo de mim mesmo.
18 When someone speaks on his own account, he is seeking honour for himself; but when he is seekingthe honour of the person who sent him, then he is true and altogether without dishonesty.	18 Quem fala por própria autoridade busca a própria glória, mas quem procura a glória de quem o enviou é digno de fé e nele não há impostura alguma.
19 Did not Moses give you the Law? And yet not one of you keeps the Law!	19 Acaso não foi Moisés quem vos deu a lei? No entanto, ninguém de vós cumpre a lei!...
20 The crowd replied, 'You are mad! Who wants to kil you?'	20 Por que procurais tirar-me a vida? Respondeu o povo: Tens um demônio! Quem procura tirar-te a vida?
21 Jesus answered, 'One work I did, and you are all amazed at it.	21 Replicou Jesus: Fiz uma só obra, e todos vós vos maravilhais!
22 Moses ordered you to practise circumcision -- not that it began with him, it goes back to the patriarchs-- and you circumcise on the Sabbath.	22 Moisés vos deu a circuncisão {se bem que ela não é de Moisés, mas dos patriarcas}, e até no sábado circuncidais um homem!
23 Now if someone can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the Law of Moses is not broken, why areyou angry with me for making someone completely healthy on a Sabbath?	23 Se um homem recebe a circuncisão em dia de sábado, e isso sem violar a Lei de Moisés, por que vos indignais comigo, que tenho curado um homem em todo o seu corpo em dia de sábado?
24 Do not keep judging according to appearances; let your judgement be according to what is right.'	24 Não julgueis pela aparência, mas julgai conforme a justiça.
25 Meanwhile some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, 'Isn't this the man they want to kil ?	25 Algumas das pessoas de Jerusalém diziam: Não é este aquele a quem procuram tirar a vida?
26 And here he is, speaking openly, and they have nothing to say to him! Can it be true the authoritieshave recognised that he is the Christ?	26 Todavia, ei-lo que fala em público e não lhe dizem coisa alguma. Porventura reconheceram de fato as autoridades que ele é o Cristo?
27 Yet we al know where he comes from, but when the Christ appears no one wil know where he comesfrom.'	27 Mas este nós sabemos de onde vem. Do Cristo, porém, quando vier, ninguém saberá de onde seja.
28 Then, as Jesus was teaching in the Temple, he cried out: You know me and you know where I camefrom. Yet I have not come of my own accord: but he who sent me is true; You do not know him,	28 Enquanto ensinava no templo, Jesus exclamou: Ah! Vós me conheceis e sabeis de onde eu sou!... Entretanto, não vim de mim mesmo, mas é verdadeiro aquele que me enviou, e vós não o conheceis.
29 but I know him because I have my being from him and it was he who sent me.	29 Eu o conheço, porque venho dele e ele me enviou.
30 They wanted to arrest him then, but because his hour had not yet come no one laid a hand on him.	30 Procuraram prendê-lo, mas ninguém lhe deitou as mãos, porque ainda não era chegada a sua hora.
31 There were many people in the crowds, however, who believed in him; they were saying, 'When theChrist comes, wil he give more signs than this man has?'	31 Muitos do povo, porém, creram nele e perguntavam: Quando vier o Cristo, fará mais milagres do que este faz?
32 Hearing that talk like this about him was spreading among the people, the Pharisees sent the Templeguards to arrest him.	32 Os fariseus ouviram esse murmúrio que circulava entre o povo a respeito de Jesus. Então, de acordo com eles, os príncipes dos sacerdotes enviaram guardas para prendê-lo.
33 Then Jesus said: For a short time I am with you stil ; then I shal go back to the one who sent me.	33 Disse Jesus: Ainda por um pouco de tempo estou convosco e então vou para aquele que me enviou.
34 You will look for me and wil not find me; where I am you cannot come.	34 Buscar-me-eis sem me achar, nem podereis ir para onde estou.
35 So the Jews said to one another, 'Where is he intending to go that we shal not be able to find him? Ishe intending to go abroad to the people who are dispersed among the Greeks and to teach the Greeks?	35 Os judeus perguntavam entre si: Para onde irá ele, que o não possamos achar? Porventura irá para o meio dos judeus dispersos entre os gregos, para tornar-se o doutor dos estrangeiros?
36 'Why do you want to kil me?' What does he mean when he says: "You will look for me and wil not findme; where I am, you cannot come?" '	36 Que significam essas palavras que nos disse: Buscar-me-eis sem me achar, e onde estou para lá não podereis ir?
37 On the last day, the great day of the festival, Jesus stood and cried out: 'Let anyone who is thirstycome to me!	37 No último dia, que é o principal dia de festa, estava Jesus de pé e clamava: Se alguém tiver sede, venha a mim e beba.
38 Let anyone who believes in me come and drink! As scripture says, "From his heart shal flow streamsof living water." '	38 Quem crê em mim, como diz a Escritura: Do seu interior manarão rios de água viva {Zc 14,8; Is 58,11}.
39 He was speaking of the Spirit which those who believed in him were to receive; for there was no Spiritas yet because Jesus had not yet been glorified.	39 Dizia isso, referindo-se ao Espírito que haviam de receber os que cressem nele, pois ainda não fora dado o Espírito, visto que Jesus ainda não tinha sido glorificado.
40 Some of the crowd who had been listening said, 'He is indeed the prophet,'	40 Ouvindo essas palavras, alguns daquela multidão diziam: Este é realmente o profeta.
41 and some said, 'He is the Christ,' but others said, 'Would the Christ come from Galilee?	41 Outros diziam: Este é o Cristo. Mas outros protestavam: É acaso da Galiléia que há de vir o Cristo?
42 Does not scripture say that the Christ must be descended from David and come from Bethlehem, thevil age where David was?'	42 Não diz a Escritura: O Cristo há de vir da família de Davi, e da aldeia de Belém, onde vivia Davi?
43 So the people could not agree about him.	43 Houve por isso divisão entre o povo por causa dele.
44 Some wanted to arrest him, but no one actual y laid a hand on him.	44 Alguns deles queriam prendê-lo, mas ninguém lhe lançou as mãos.
45 The guards went back to the chief priests and Pharisees who said to them, 'Why haven't you broughthim?'	45 Voltaram os guardas para junto dos príncipes dos sacerdotes e fariseus, que lhes perguntaram: Por que não o trouxestes?
46 The guards replied, 'No one has ever spoken like this man.'	46 Os guardas responderam: Jamais homem algum falou como este homem!...
47 'So,' the Pharisees answered, 'you, too, have been led astray?	47 Replicaram os fariseus: Porventura também vós fostes seduzidos?
48 Have any of the authorities come to believe in him? Any of the Pharisees?	48 Há, acaso, alguém dentre as autoridades ou fariseus que acreditou nele?
49 This rabble knows nothing about the Law -- they are damned.'	49 Este poviléu que não conhece a lei é amaldiçoado!...
50 One of them, Nicodemus -- the same man who had come to Jesus earlier -- said to them,	50 Replicou-lhes Nicodemos, um deles, o mesmo que de noite o fora procurar:
51 'But surely our Law does not al ow us to pass judgement on anyone without first giving him a hearingand discovering what he is doing?'	51 Condena acaso a nossa lei algum homem, antes de o ouvir e conhecer o que ele faz?
52 To this they answered, 'Are you a Galilean too? Go into the matter, and see for yourself: prophets donot arise in Galilee.'	52 Responderam-lhe: Porventura és também tu galileu? Informa-te bem e verás que da Galiléia não saiu profeta.
53 They al went home,	53 E voltaram, cada um para sua casa.
