NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA RICCIOTTI
1 After this Jesus travel ed round Galilee; he could not travel round Judaea, because the Jews wereseeking to kil him.	1 - Dopo ciò Gesù percorreva la Galilea, non volendo andare in Giudea, perchè i Giudei lo cercavano per ucciderlo.
2 As the Jewish feast of Shelters drew near,	2 Era imminente una festa dei Giudei, i Tabernacoli,
3 his brothers said to him, 'Leave this place and go to Judaea, so that your disciples, too, can see the works you are doing;	3 e i suoi fratelli gli dissero: «Pàrtiti di qua e va' in Giudea, affinchè anche i tuoi discepoli vedano le opere che fai.
4 no one who wants to be publicly known acts in secret; if this is what you are doing, you should revealyourself to the world.'	4 Nessuno fa alcunchè di nascosto, quando vuole esser conosciuto in pubblico. Se tanto fai, mostrati al mondo».
5 Not even his brothers had faith in him.	5 Poichè neppure i suoi fratelli credevano in lui.
6 Jesus answered, 'For me the right time has not come yet, but for you any time is the right time.	6 Gesù disse loro: «Il mio momento non è ancora venuto; per voi invece ogni momento è buono.
7 The world cannot hate you, but it does hate me, because I give evidence that its ways are evil.	7 Il mondo non può odiare voi; ma odia me, perchè io attesto che le sue opere sono malvage.
8 Go up to the festival yourselves: I am not going to this festival, because for me the time is not ripe yet.'	8 Andate voi a questa festa; per adesso, io non ci vado, non essendo ancora compiuto il mio tempo».
9 Having said that, he stayed behind in Galilee.	9 Ciò detto, rimase in Galilea;
10 However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went up as well, not publicly but secretly.	10 ma quando i suoi fratelli furono partiti, andò egli pure alla festa, non pubblicamente, ma quasi di nascosto.
11 At the festival the Jews were on the look-out for him: 'Where is he?' they said.	11 I Giudei intanto lo cercavano durante la festa e si domandavano: «Dov'è egli?».
12 There was a great deal of talk about him in the crowds. Some said, 'He is a good man'; others, 'No, heis leading the people astray.'	12 E vi era un gran mormorare di lui fra le turbe. Gli uni dicevano: «È buono»; altri dicevano: «No, ma seduce il popolo».
13 Yet no one spoke about him openly, for fear of the Jews.	13 Tuttavia nessuno osava parlare di lui apertamente, per paura dei Giudei.
14 When the festival was half over, Jesus went to the Temple and began to teach.	14 Quando si fu già a metà della festa, Gesù salì al tempio e insegnava.
15 The Jews were astonished and said, 'How did he learn to read? He has not been educated.'	15 E i Giudei restarono meravigliati e dicevano: «Come mai costui sa di lettere, se non ha mai studiato?».
16 Jesus answered them: 'My teaching is not from myself: it comes from the one who sent me;	16 Gesù rispose loro: «La mia dottrina non è mia, ma di Colui che mi ha mandato.
17 anyone who is prepared to do his wil , wil know whether my teaching is from God or whether I speakon my own account.	17 Se uno vuol fare la volontà di lui, conoscerà se questo insegnamento viene da Dio o se io parlo da me stesso.
18 When someone speaks on his own account, he is seeking honour for himself; but when he is seekingthe honour of the person who sent him, then he is true and altogether without dishonesty.	18 Chi parla da se stesso, cerca la propria gloria; invece chi cerca la gloria di chi l'ha mandato è verace e non vi è in lui ingiustizia.
19 Did not Moses give you the Law? And yet not one of you keeps the Law!	19 Mosè non vi ha dato la legge? Eppure nessuno di voi osserva la legge.
20 The crowd replied, 'You are mad! Who wants to kil you?'	20 Perchè cercate di uccidermi?». La moltitudine rispose: «Tu hai un demonio. Chi cerca di ucciderti?».
21 Jesus answered, 'One work I did, and you are all amazed at it.	21 Gesù replicò loro: «Io ho fatto un'opera sola, e tutti vi mostrate pieni di meraviglia.
22 Moses ordered you to practise circumcision -- not that it began with him, it goes back to the patriarchs-- and you circumcise on the Sabbath.	22 Mosè vi ha dato la circoncisione - benchè essa venga dai padri, non da Mosè - e voi circoncidete un uomo di sabato.
23 Now if someone can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the Law of Moses is not broken, why areyou angry with me for making someone completely healthy on a Sabbath?	23 Se l'uomo viene circonciso di sabato per non violare la legge di Mosè, come vi sdegnate contro di me, perchè di sabato ho guarito tutto intero un uomo?
24 Do not keep judging according to appearances; let your judgement be according to what is right.'	24 Non giudicate secondo le apparenze, ma giudicate con retto giudizio».
25 Meanwhile some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, 'Isn't this the man they want to kil ?	25 Alcuni dei Gerosolimitani dicevano: «Non è costui che cercano di uccidere?
26 And here he is, speaking openly, and they have nothing to say to him! Can it be true the authoritieshave recognised that he is the Christ?	26 Ed eccolo invece parlare pubblicamente, e non gli dicono nulla. Hanno forse i capi veramente riconosciuto esser lui il Cristo?
27 Yet we al know where he comes from, but when the Christ appears no one wil know where he comesfrom.'	27 Ma noi sappiamo donde venga quest'uomo, mentre quando il Cristo verrà, nessuno saprà donde sia».
28 Then, as Jesus was teaching in the Temple, he cried out: You know me and you know where I camefrom. Yet I have not come of my own accord: but he who sent me is true; You do not know him,	28 Gesù, insegnando nel tempio, disse ad alta voce: «Dunque voi mi conoscete, e sapete donde io sia? Eppure non sono venuto da me medesimo, ma è veritiero chi mi ha mandato, e voi non lo conoscete.
29 but I know him because I have my being from him and it was he who sent me.	29 Io lo conosco, perchè io sono da lui ed egli m'ha mandato».
30 They wanted to arrest him then, but because his hour had not yet come no one laid a hand on him.	30 Perciò cercavano di prenderlo; ma nessuno gli mise le mani addosso, perchè la sua ora non era ancora venuta.
31 There were many people in the crowds, however, who believed in him; they were saying, 'When theChrist comes, wil he give more signs than this man has?'	31 Molti però della folla credettero in lui e dicevano: «Quando il Cristo verrà, farà forse più prodigi di quelli che fa costui?».
32 Hearing that talk like this about him was spreading among the people, the Pharisees sent the Templeguards to arrest him.	32 I Farisei sentirono che il popolo bisbigliava ciò su di lui; e i Farisei e i capi mandarono guardie a pigliarlo.
33 Then Jesus said: For a short time I am with you stil ; then I shal go back to the one who sent me.	33 Disse dunque Gesù: «Per poco tempo sono ancora con voi, e me ne ritorno a Colui che mi ha inviato.
34 You will look for me and wil not find me; where I am you cannot come.	34 Voi mi cercherete e non mi troverete, e non potrete venire dove io sarò».
35 So the Jews said to one another, 'Where is he intending to go that we shal not be able to find him? Ishe intending to go abroad to the people who are dispersed among the Greeks and to teach the Greeks?	35 Dicevano perciò tra loro i Giudei: «Dove mai andrà, se noi non dobbiamo più ritrovarlo? Che se ne vada forse ai dispersi tra i Gentili ad ammaestrare i Gentili?
36 'Why do you want to kil me?' What does he mean when he says: "You will look for me and wil not findme; where I am, you cannot come?" '	36 Che significa ciò che ha detto: - Voi mi cercherete e non mi troverete, e non potrete venire dove io sarò? -».
37 On the last day, the great day of the festival, Jesus stood and cried out: 'Let anyone who is thirstycome to me!	37 Nell'ultimo gran giorno della festa, Gesù levatosi in piedi, diceva ad alta voce: «Chi ha sete, venga a me e beva.
38 Let anyone who believes in me come and drink! As scripture says, "From his heart shal flow streamsof living water." '	38 A chi crede in me, come dice la Scrittura, sgorgheranno dal ventre torrenti d'acqua viva».
39 He was speaking of the Spirit which those who believed in him were to receive; for there was no Spiritas yet because Jesus had not yet been glorified.	39 Ciò egli disse dello Spirito che dovevano ricevere i credenti in lui, non essendo ancora dato lo Spirito, perchè Gesù non era ancora stato glorificato.
40 Some of the crowd who had been listening said, 'He is indeed the prophet,'	40 Perciò taluni di quella turba, udite queste sue parole, dicevano: «Costui è veramente il Profeta!».
41 and some said, 'He is the Christ,' but others said, 'Would the Christ come from Galilee?	41 Altri dicevano: «Egli è il Cristo». Ed altri invece dicevano: «Forsechè il Cristo verrà dalla Galilea?
42 Does not scripture say that the Christ must be descended from David and come from Bethlehem, thevil age where David was?'	42 Non ha forse detto la Scrittura che il Cristo deve venire dalla progenie di David e dal villaggio di Betleem, ov'era David?».
43 So the people could not agree about him.	43 E così nacque dissenso tra la folla a motivo di lui.
44 Some wanted to arrest him, but no one actual y laid a hand on him.	44 E alcuni di essi volevano pigliarlo; ma nessuno gli mise le mani addosso.
45 The guards went back to the chief priests and Pharisees who said to them, 'Why haven't you broughthim?'	45 Le guardie tornarono ai pontefici ed ai Farisei, che dissero loro: «Perchè non l'avete condotto?».
46 The guards replied, 'No one has ever spoken like this man.'	46 Le guardie risposero: «Nessun uomo ha parlato come quest'uomo».
47 'So,' the Pharisees answered, 'you, too, have been led astray?	47 I Farisei risposero loro: «Siete stati forse sedotti anche voi?
48 Have any of the authorities come to believe in him? Any of the Pharisees?	48 Vi è forse un solo dei capi oppure dei Farisei che abbia creduto in lui?
49 This rabble knows nothing about the Law -- they are damned.'	49 Ma questa turba, che non sa la legge, è maledetta».
50 One of them, Nicodemus -- the same man who had come to Jesus earlier -- said to them,	50 Nicodemo, uno dei loro, quello stesso ch'era già venuto da Gesù, disse loro:
51 'But surely our Law does not al ow us to pass judgement on anyone without first giving him a hearingand discovering what he is doing?'	51 «La nostra legge giudica forse un uomo senza prima ascoltarlo e sapere ciò che fa?».
52 To this they answered, 'Are you a Galilean too? Go into the matter, and see for yourself: prophets donot arise in Galilee.'	52 Gli risposero: «Sei forse anche tu un Galileo? Scruta le Scritture e vedrai che un profeta non può venire dalla Galilea».
53 They al went home,	53 E ciascuno tornò a casa sua.
