John 7

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 After this Jesus travel ed round Galilee; he could not travel round Judaea, because the Jews wereseeking to kil him.	1 Après cela, Jésus parcourait la Galilée; il n'avait pas pouvoir de circuler en Judée, parce que les Juifscherchaient à le tuer.
2 As the Jewish feast of Shelters drew near,	2 Or la fête juive des Tentes était proche.
3 his brothers said to him, 'Leave this place and go to Judaea, so that your disciples, too, can see the works you are doing;	3 Ses frères lui dirent donc: "Passe d'ici en Judée, que tes disciples aussi voient les oeuvres que tu fais:
4 no one who wants to be publicly known acts in secret; if this is what you are doing, you should revealyourself to the world.'	4 on n'agit pas en secret, quand on veut être en vue. Puisque tu fais ces choses-là, manifeste-toi aumonde."
5 Not even his brothers had faith in him.	5 Pas même ses frères en effet ne croyaient en lui.
6 Jesus answered, 'For me the right time has not come yet, but for you any time is the right time.	6 Jésus leur dit alors: "Mon temps n'est pas encore venu, tandis que le vôtre est toujours prêt.
7 The world cannot hate you, but it does hate me, because I give evidence that its ways are evil.	7 Le monde ne peut pas vous haïr; mais moi, il me hait, parce que je témoigne que ses oeuvres sontmauvaises.
8 Go up to the festival yourselves: I am not going to this festival, because for me the time is not ripe yet.'	8 Vous, montez à la fête; moi, je ne monte pas à cette fête, parce que mon temps n'est pas encoreaccompli."
9 Having said that, he stayed behind in Galilee.	9 Cela dit, il resta en Galilée.
10 However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went up as well, not publicly but secretly.	10 Mais quand ses frères furent montés à la fête, alors il monta lui aussi, pas au grand jour, mais ensecret.
11 At the festival the Jews were on the look-out for him: 'Where is he?' they said.	11 Les Juifs le cherchaient donc pendant la fête et disaient: "Où est-il?"
12 There was a great deal of talk about him in the crowds. Some said, 'He is a good man'; others, 'No, heis leading the people astray.'	12 On chuchotait beaucoup sur son compte dans les foules. Les uns disaient: "C'est un homme de bien."D'autres disaient: "Non, il égare la foule."
13 Yet no one spoke about him openly, for fear of the Jews.	13 Pourtant personne ne s'exprimait ouvertement à son sujet par peur des Juifs.
14 When the festival was half over, Jesus went to the Temple and began to teach.	14 On était déjà au milieu de la fête, lorsque Jésus monta au Temple et se mit à enseigner.
15 The Jews were astonished and said, 'How did he learn to read? He has not been educated.'	15 Les Juifs, étonnés, disaient: "Comment connaît-il les lettres sans avoir étudié?"
16 Jesus answered them: 'My teaching is not from myself: it comes from the one who sent me;	16 Jésus leur répondit: "Ma doctrine n'est pas de moi, mais de celui qui m'a envoyé.
17 anyone who is prepared to do his wil , wil know whether my teaching is from God or whether I speakon my own account.	17 Si quelqu'un veut faire sa volonté, il reconnaîtra si ma doctrine est de Dieu ou si je parle de moi-même.
18 When someone speaks on his own account, he is seeking honour for himself; but when he is seekingthe honour of the person who sent him, then he is true and altogether without dishonesty.	18 Celui qui parle de lui-même cherche sa propre gloire; mais celui qui cherche la gloire de celui qui l'aenvoyé, celui-là est véridique et il n'y a pas en lui d'imposture.
19 Did not Moses give you the Law? And yet not one of you keeps the Law!	19 Moïse ne vous a-t-il pas donné la Loi? Et aucun de vous ne la pratique, la Loi! Pourquoi cherchez-vous à me tuer?"
20 The crowd replied, 'You are mad! Who wants to kil you?'	20 La foule répondit: "Tu as un démon. Qui cherche à te tuer?"
21 Jesus answered, 'One work I did, and you are all amazed at it.	21 Jésus leur répondit: "Pour une seule oeuvre que j'ai faite, vous voilà tous étonnés.
22 Moses ordered you to practise circumcision -- not that it began with him, it goes back to the patriarchs-- and you circumcise on the Sabbath.	22 Moïse vous a donné la circoncision - non qu'elle vienne de Moïse mais des patriarches - et, le jour dusabbat, vous la pratiquez sur un homme.
23 Now if someone can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the Law of Moses is not broken, why areyou angry with me for making someone completely healthy on a Sabbath?	23 Alors, un homme reçoit la circoncision, le jour du sabbat, pour que ne soit pas enfreinte la Loi deMoïse, et vous vous indignez contre moi parce que j'ai guéri un homme tout entier le jour du sabbat?
24 Do not keep judging according to appearances; let your judgement be according to what is right.'	24 Cessez de juger sur l'apparence; jugez selon la justice."
25 Meanwhile some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, 'Isn't this the man they want to kil ?	25 Certains, des gens de Jérusalem, disaient: "N'est-ce pas lui qu'ils cherchent à tuer?
26 And here he is, speaking openly, and they have nothing to say to him! Can it be true the authoritieshave recognised that he is the Christ?	26 Et le voilà qui parle ouvertement sans qu'ils lui disent rien! Est-ce que vraiment les autorités auraientreconnu qu'il est le Christ?
27 Yet we al know where he comes from, but when the Christ appears no one wil know where he comesfrom.'	27 Mais lui, nous savons d'où il est, tandis que le Christ, à sa venue, personne ne saura d'où il est."
28 Then, as Jesus was teaching in the Temple, he cried out: You know me and you know where I camefrom. Yet I have not come of my own accord: but he who sent me is true; You do not know him,	28 Alors Jésus, enseignant dans le Temple, s'écria: "Vous me connaissez et vous savez d'où je suis; etpourtant ce n'est pas de moi-même que je suis venu, mais il m'envoie vraiment, celui qui m'a envoyé. Vous, vousne le connaissez pas.
29 but I know him because I have my being from him and it was he who sent me.	29 Moi, je le connais, parce que je viens d'auprès de lui et c'est lui qui m'a envoyé."
30 They wanted to arrest him then, but because his hour had not yet come no one laid a hand on him.	30 Ils cherchaient alors à le saisir, mais personne ne porta la main sur lui, parce que son heure n'était pasencore venue.
31 There were many people in the crowds, however, who believed in him; they were saying, 'When theChrist comes, wil he give more signs than this man has?'	31 Dans la foule, beaucoup crurent en lui et disaient: "Le Christ, quand il viendra, fera-t-il plus de signesque n'en a fait celui-ci?
32 Hearing that talk like this about him was spreading among the people, the Pharisees sent the Templeguards to arrest him.	32 Ces rumeurs de la foule à son sujet parvinrent aux oreilles des Pharisiens. Ils envoyèrent des gardespour le saisir.
33 Then Jesus said: For a short time I am with you stil ; then I shal go back to the one who sent me.	33 Jésus dit alors: "Pour un peu de temps encore je suis avec vous, et je m'en vais vers celui qui m'aenvoyé.
34 You will look for me and wil not find me; where I am you cannot come.	34 Vous me chercherez, et ne me trouverez pas; et où je suis, vous ne pouvez pas venir."
35 So the Jews said to one another, 'Where is he intending to go that we shal not be able to find him? Ishe intending to go abroad to the people who are dispersed among the Greeks and to teach the Greeks?	35 Les Juifs se dirent entre eux: "Où va-t-il aller, que nous ne le trouverons pas? Va-t-il rejoindre ceuxqui sont dispersés chez les Grecs et enseigner les Grecs?
36 'Why do you want to kil me?' What does he mean when he says: "You will look for me and wil not findme; where I am, you cannot come?" '	36 Que signifie cette parole qu'il a dite: Vous me chercherez et ne me trouverez pas; et où je suis, vous nepouvez pas venir?"
37 On the last day, the great day of the festival, Jesus stood and cried out: 'Let anyone who is thirstycome to me!	37 Le dernier jour de la fête, le grand jour, Jésus, debout, s'écria: "Si quelqu'un a soif, qu'il vienne à moi,et qu'il boive,
38 Let anyone who believes in me come and drink! As scripture says, "From his heart shal flow streamsof living water." '	38 celui qui croit en moi!" selon le mot de l'Ecriture: De son sein couleront des fleuves d'eau vive.
39 He was speaking of the Spirit which those who believed in him were to receive; for there was no Spiritas yet because Jesus had not yet been glorified.	39 Il parlait de l'Esprit que devaient recevoir ceux qui avaient cru en lui; car il n'y avait pas encored'Esprit, parce que Jésus n'avait pas encore été glorifié.
40 Some of the crowd who had been listening said, 'He is indeed the prophet,'	40 Dans la foule, plusieurs, qui avaient entendu ces paroles, disaient: "C'est vraiment lui le prophète!"
41 and some said, 'He is the Christ,' but others said, 'Would the Christ come from Galilee?	41 D'autres disaient: "C'est le Christ!" Mais d'autres disaient: "Est-ce de la Galilée que le Christ doitvenir?
42 Does not scripture say that the Christ must be descended from David and come from Bethlehem, thevil age where David was?'	42 L'Ecriture n'a-t-elle pas dit que c'est de la descendance de David et de Bethléem, le village où étaitDavid, que doit venir le Christ?"
43 So the people could not agree about him.	43 Une scission se produisit donc dans la foule, à cause de lui.
44 Some wanted to arrest him, but no one actual y laid a hand on him.	44 Certains d'entre eux voulaient le saisir, mais personne ne porta la main sur lui.
45 The guards went back to the chief priests and Pharisees who said to them, 'Why haven't you broughthim?'	45 Les gardes revinrent donc trouver les grands prêtres et les Pharisiens. Ceux-ci leur dirent: "Pourquoine l'avez-vous pas amené?"
46 The guards replied, 'No one has ever spoken like this man.'	46 Les gardes répondirent: "Jamais homme n'a parlé comme cela!"
47 'So,' the Pharisees answered, 'you, too, have been led astray?	47 Les Pharisiens répliquèrent: "Vous aussi, vous êtes-vous laissé égarer?
48 Have any of the authorities come to believe in him? Any of the Pharisees?	48 Est-il un des notables qui ait cru en lui? Ou un des Pharisiens?
49 This rabble knows nothing about the Law -- they are damned.'	49 Mais cette foule qui ne connaît pas la Loi, ce sont des maudits!"
50 One of them, Nicodemus -- the same man who had come to Jesus earlier -- said to them,	50 Nicodème, l'un d'entre eux, celui qui était venu trouver Jésus précédemment, leur dit:
51 'But surely our Law does not al ow us to pass judgement on anyone without first giving him a hearingand discovering what he is doing?'	51 "Notre Loi juge-t-elle un homme sans d'abord l'entendre et savoir ce qu'il fait!"
52 To this they answered, 'Are you a Galilean too? Go into the matter, and see for yourself: prophets donot arise in Galilee.'	52 Ils lui répondirent: "Es-tu de la Galilée, toi aussi? Etudie! Tu verras que ce n'est pas de la Galilée quesurgit le prophète."
53 They al went home,	53 Et ils s'en allèrent chacun chez soi.
