NEW JERUSALEMNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
After this Jesus travel ed round Galilee; he could not travel round Judaea, because the Jews wereseeking to kil him.1 After this, Jesus moved about within Galilee; but he did not wish to travel in Judea, because the Jews were trying to kill him.
As the Jewish feast of Shelters drew near,2 But the Jewish feast of Tabernacles was near.
his brothers said to him, 'Leave this place and go to Judaea, so that your disciples, too, can see the works you are doing;3 So his brothers said to him, "Leave here and go to Judea, so that your disciples also may see the works you are doing.
no one who wants to be publicly known acts in secret; if this is what you are doing, you should revealyourself to the world.'4 No one works in secret if he wants to be known publicly. If you do these things, manifest yourself to the world."
Not even his brothers had faith in him.5 For his brothers did not believe in him.
Jesus answered, 'For me the right time has not come yet, but for you any time is the right time.6 So Jesus said to them, "My time is not yet here, but the time is always right for you.
The world cannot hate you, but it does hate me, because I give evidence that its ways are evil.7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me, because I testify to it that its works are evil.
Go up to the festival yourselves: I am not going to this festival, because for me the time is not ripe yet.'8 You go up to the feast. I am not going up to this feast, because my time has not yet been fulfilled."
Having said that, he stayed behind in Galilee.9 After he had said this, he stayed on in Galilee.
However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went up as well, not publicly but secretly.10 But when his brothers had gone up to the feast, he himself also went up, not openly but (as it were) in secret.
At the festival the Jews were on the look-out for him: 'Where is he?' they said.11 The Jews were looking for him at the feast and saying, "Where is he?"
There was a great deal of talk about him in the crowds. Some said, 'He is a good man'; others, 'No, heis leading the people astray.'12 And there was considerable murmuring about him in the crowds. Some said, "He is a good man," (while) others said, "No; on the contrary, he misleads the crowd."
Yet no one spoke about him openly, for fear of the Jews.13 Still, no one spoke openly about him because they were afraid of the Jews.
When the festival was half over, Jesus went to the Temple and began to teach.14 When the feast was already half over, Jesus went up into the temple area and began to teach.
The Jews were astonished and said, 'How did he learn to read? He has not been educated.'15 The Jews were amazed and said, "How does he know scripture without having studied?"
Jesus answered them: 'My teaching is not from myself: it comes from the one who sent me;16 Jesus answered them and said, "My teaching is not my own but is from the one who sent me.
anyone who is prepared to do his wil , wil know whether my teaching is from God or whether I speakon my own account.17 Whoever chooses to do his will shall know whether my teaching is from God or whether I speak on my own.
When someone speaks on his own account, he is seeking honour for himself; but when he is seekingthe honour of the person who sent him, then he is true and altogether without dishonesty.18 Whoever speaks on his own seeks his own glory, but whoever seeks the glory of the one who sent him is truthful, and there is no wrong in him.
Did not Moses give you the Law? And yet not one of you keeps the Law!19 Did not Moses give you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?"
The crowd replied, 'You are mad! Who wants to kil you?'20 The crowd answered, "You are possessed! Who is trying to kill you?"
Jesus answered, 'One work I did, and you are all amazed at it.21 Jesus answered and said to them, "I performed one work and all of you are amazed
Moses ordered you to practise circumcision -- not that it began with him, it goes back to the patriarchs-- and you circumcise on the Sabbath.22 because of it. Moses gave you circumcision--not that it came from Moses but rather from the patriarchs--and you circumcise a man on the sabbath.
Now if someone can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the Law of Moses is not broken, why areyou angry with me for making someone completely healthy on a Sabbath?23 If a man can receive circumcision on a sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because I made a whole person well on a sabbath?
Do not keep judging according to appearances; let your judgement be according to what is right.'24 Stop judging by appearances, but judge justly."
Meanwhile some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, 'Isn't this the man they want to kil ?25 So some of the inhabitants of Jerusalem said, "Is he not the one they are trying to kill?
And here he is, speaking openly, and they have nothing to say to him! Can it be true the authoritieshave recognised that he is the Christ?26 And look, he is speaking openly and they say nothing to him. Could the authorities have realized that he is the Messiah?
Yet we al know where he comes from, but when the Christ appears no one wil know where he comesfrom.'27 But we know where he is from. When the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from."
Then, as Jesus was teaching in the Temple, he cried out: You know me and you know where I camefrom. Yet I have not come of my own accord: but he who sent me is true; You do not know him,28 So Jesus cried out in the temple area as he was teaching and said, "You know me and also know where I am from. Yet I did not come on my own, but the one who sent me, whom you do not know, is true.
but I know him because I have my being from him and it was he who sent me.29 I know him, because I am from him, and he sent me."
They wanted to arrest him then, but because his hour had not yet come no one laid a hand on him.30 So they tried to arrest him, but no one laid a hand upon him, because his hour had not yet come.
There were many people in the crowds, however, who believed in him; they were saying, 'When theChrist comes, wil he give more signs than this man has?'31 But many of the crowd began to believe in him, and said, "When the Messiah comes, will he perform more signs than this man has done?"
Hearing that talk like this about him was spreading among the people, the Pharisees sent the Templeguards to arrest him.32 The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring about him to this effect, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent guards to arrest him.
Then Jesus said: For a short time I am with you stil ; then I shal go back to the one who sent me.33 So Jesus said, "I will be with you only a little while longer, and then I will go to the one who sent me.
You will look for me and wil not find me; where I am you cannot come.34 You will look for me but not find (me), and where I am you cannot come."
So the Jews said to one another, 'Where is he intending to go that we shal not be able to find him? Ishe intending to go abroad to the people who are dispersed among the Greeks and to teach the Greeks?35 So the Jews said to one another, "Where is he going that we will not find him? Surely he is not going to the dispersion among the Greeks to teach the Greeks, is he?
'Why do you want to kil me?' What does he mean when he says: "You will look for me and wil not findme; where I am, you cannot come?" '36 What is the meaning of his saying, 'You will look for me and not find (me), and where I am you cannot come'?"
On the last day, the great day of the festival, Jesus stood and cried out: 'Let anyone who is thirstycome to me!37 On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood up and exclaimed, "Let anyone who thirsts come to me and drink.
Let anyone who believes in me come and drink! As scripture says, "From his heart shal flow streamsof living water." '38 Whoever believes in me, as scripture says: 'Rivers of living water will flow from within him.'"
He was speaking of the Spirit which those who believed in him were to receive; for there was no Spiritas yet because Jesus had not yet been glorified.39 He said this in reference to the Spirit that those who came to believe in him were to receive. There was, of course, no Spirit yet, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.
Some of the crowd who had been listening said, 'He is indeed the prophet,'40 Some in the crowd who heard these words said, "This is truly the Prophet."
and some said, 'He is the Christ,' but others said, 'Would the Christ come from Galilee?41 Others said, "This is the Messiah." But others said, "The Messiah will not come from Galilee, will he?
Does not scripture say that the Christ must be descended from David and come from Bethlehem, thevil age where David was?'42 Does not scripture say that the Messiah will be of David's family and come from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?"
So the people could not agree about him.43 So a division occurred in the crowd because of him.
Some wanted to arrest him, but no one actual y laid a hand on him.44 Some of them even wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.
The guards went back to the chief priests and Pharisees who said to them, 'Why haven't you broughthim?'45 So the guards went to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, "Why did you not bring him?"
The guards replied, 'No one has ever spoken like this man.'46 The guards answered, "Never before has anyone spoken like this one."
'So,' the Pharisees answered, 'you, too, have been led astray?47 So the Pharisees answered them, "Have you also been deceived?
Have any of the authorities come to believe in him? Any of the Pharisees?48 Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him?
This rabble knows nothing about the Law -- they are damned.'49 But this crowd, which does not know the law, is accursed."
One of them, Nicodemus -- the same man who had come to Jesus earlier -- said to them,50 Nicodemus, one of their members who had come to him earlier, said to them,
'But surely our Law does not al ow us to pass judgement on anyone without first giving him a hearingand discovering what he is doing?'51 "Does our law condemn a person before it first hears him and finds out what he is doing?"
To this they answered, 'Are you a Galilean too? Go into the matter, and see for yourself: prophets donot arise in Galilee.'52 They answered and said to him, "You are not from Galilee also, are you? Look and see that no prophet arises from Galilee."
They al went home,53 Then each went to his own house,
