NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 After this Jesus travel ed round Galilee; he could not travel round Judaea, because the Jews wereseeking to kil him.	1 Después de esto, Jesús andaba por Galilea, y no podía andar por Judea, porque los judíos buscaban matarle.
2 As the Jewish feast of Shelters drew near,	2 Pero se acercaba la fiesta judía de las Tiendas.
3 his brothers said to him, 'Leave this place and go to Judaea, so that your disciples, too, can see the works you are doing;	3 Y le dijeron sus hermanos: «Sal de aquí y vete a Judea, para que también tus discípulos vean las obras que haces,
4 no one who wants to be publicly known acts in secret; if this is what you are doing, you should revealyourself to the world.'	4 pues nadie actúa en secreto cuando quiere ser conocido. Si haces estas cosas, muéstrate al mundo».
5 Not even his brothers had faith in him.	5 Es que ni siquiera sus hermanos creían en él.
6 Jesus answered, 'For me the right time has not come yet, but for you any time is the right time.	6 Entonces les dice Jesús: «Todavía no ha llegado mi tiempo, en cambio vuestro tiempo siempre está a mano.
7 The world cannot hate you, but it does hate me, because I give evidence that its ways are evil.	7 El mundo no puede odiaros; a mí sí me aborrece, porque doy testimonio de que sus obras son perversas.
8 Go up to the festival yourselves: I am not going to this festival, because for me the time is not ripe yet.'	8 Subid vosotros a la fiesta; yo no subo a esta fiesta porque aún no se ha cumplido mi tiempo».
9 Having said that, he stayed behind in Galilee.	9 Dicho esto, se quedó en Galilea.
10 However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went up as well, not publicly but secretly.	10 Pero después que sus hermanos subieron a la fiesta, entonces él también subió no manifiestamente, sino de incógnito.
11 At the festival the Jews were on the look-out for him: 'Where is he?' they said.	11 Los judíos, durante la fiesta, andaban buscándole y decían: «¿Dónde está ése?»
12 There was a great deal of talk about him in the crowds. Some said, 'He is a good man'; others, 'No, heis leading the people astray.'	12 Entre la gente había muchos comentarios acerca de él. Unos decían: «Es bueno». Otros decían: «No, sino que engaña al pueblo».
13 Yet no one spoke about him openly, for fear of the Jews.	13 Pero nadie hablaba de él abiertamente por miedo a los judíos.
14 When the festival was half over, Jesus went to the Temple and began to teach.	14 Mediada ya la fiesta, subió Jesús al Templo y se puso a enseñar.
15 The Jews were astonished and said, 'How did he learn to read? He has not been educated.'	15 Los judíos, asombrados, decían: «¿Cómo entiende de letras sin haber estudiado?»
16 Jesus answered them: 'My teaching is not from myself: it comes from the one who sent me;	16 Jesús les respondió: «Mi doctrina no es mía, sino del que me ha enviado.
17 anyone who is prepared to do his wil , wil know whether my teaching is from God or whether I speakon my own account.	17 Si alguno quiere cumplir su voluntad, verá si mi doctrina es de Dios o hablo yo por mi cuenta.
18 When someone speaks on his own account, he is seeking honour for himself; but when he is seekingthe honour of the person who sent him, then he is true and altogether without dishonesty.	18 El que habla por su cuenta, busca su propia gloria; pero el que busca la gloria del que le ha enviado, ese es veraz; y no hay impostura en él.
19 Did not Moses give you the Law? And yet not one of you keeps the Law!	19 ¿No es Moisés el que os dio la Ley? Y ninguno de vosotros cumple la Ley. ¿Por qué queréis matarme?»
20 The crowd replied, 'You are mad! Who wants to kil you?'	20 Respondió la gente: «Tienes un demonio. ¿Quién quiere matarte?»
21 Jesus answered, 'One work I did, and you are all amazed at it.	21 Jesús les respondió: «Una sola obra he hecho y todos os maravilláis.
22 Moses ordered you to practise circumcision -- not that it began with him, it goes back to the patriarchs-- and you circumcise on the Sabbath.	22 Moisés os dio la circuncisión (no que provenga de Moisés, sino de los patriarcas) y vosotros circuncidáis a uno en sábado.
23 Now if someone can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the Law of Moses is not broken, why areyou angry with me for making someone completely healthy on a Sabbath?	23 Si se circuncida a un hombre en sábado, para no quebrantar la Ley de Moisés, ¿os irritáis contra mí porque he curado a un hombre entero en sábado?
24 Do not keep judging according to appearances; let your judgement be according to what is right.'	24 No juzguéis según la apariencia. Juzgad con juicio justo».
25 Meanwhile some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, 'Isn't this the man they want to kil ?	25 Decían algunos de los de Jerusalén: «¿No es a ése a quien quieren matar?
26 And here he is, speaking openly, and they have nothing to say to him! Can it be true the authoritieshave recognised that he is the Christ?	26 Mirad cómo habla con toda libertad y no le dicen nada. ¿Habrán reconocido de veras las autoridades que este es el Cristo?
27 Yet we al know where he comes from, but when the Christ appears no one wil know where he comesfrom.'	27 Pero éste sabemos de dónde es, mientras que, cuando venga el Cristo, nadie sabrá de dónde es».
28 Then, as Jesus was teaching in the Temple, he cried out: You know me and you know where I camefrom. Yet I have not come of my own accord: but he who sent me is true; You do not know him,	28 Gritó, pues, Jesús, enseñando en el Templo y diciendo: «Me conocéis a mí y sabéis de dónde soy. Pero yo no he venido por mi cuenta; sino que verdaderamente me envía el que me envía; pero vosotros no le conocéis.
29 but I know him because I have my being from him and it was he who sent me.	29 Yo le conozco, porque vengo de él y él es el que me ha enviado».
30 They wanted to arrest him then, but because his hour had not yet come no one laid a hand on him.	30 Querían, pues, detenerle, pero nadie le echó mano, porque todavía no había llegado su hora.
31 There were many people in the crowds, however, who believed in him; they were saying, 'When theChrist comes, wil he give more signs than this man has?'	31 Y muchos entre la gente creyeron en él y decían: «Cuando venga el Cristo, ¿hará más señales que las que ha hecho éste?»
32 Hearing that talk like this about him was spreading among the people, the Pharisees sent the Templeguards to arrest him.	32 Se enteraron los fariseos que la gente hacía estos comentarios acerca de él y enviaron guardias para detenerle.
33 Then Jesus said: For a short time I am with you stil ; then I shal go back to the one who sent me.	33 Entonces él dijo: «Todavía un poco de tiempo estaré con vosotros, y me voy al que me ha enviado.
34 You will look for me and wil not find me; where I am you cannot come.	34 Me buscaréis y no me encontraréis; y adonde yo esté, vosotros no podéis venir».
35 So the Jews said to one another, 'Where is he intending to go that we shal not be able to find him? Ishe intending to go abroad to the people who are dispersed among the Greeks and to teach the Greeks?	35 Se decían entre sí los judíos: «¿A dónde se irá éste que nosotros no le podamos encontrar? ¿Se irá a los que viven dispersos entre los griegos para enseñar a los griegos?
36 'Why do you want to kil me?' What does he mean when he says: "You will look for me and wil not findme; where I am, you cannot come?" '	36 ¿Qué es eso que ha dicho: “Me buscaréis y no me encontraréis”, y “adonde yo esté, vosotros no podéis venir”?»
37 On the last day, the great day of the festival, Jesus stood and cried out: 'Let anyone who is thirstycome to me!	37 El último día de la fiesta, el más solemne, Jesús puesto en pie, gritó: «Si alguno tiene sed, venga a mí, y beba
38 Let anyone who believes in me come and drink! As scripture says, "From his heart shal flow streamsof living water." '	38 el que crea en mí», como dice la Escritura: De su seno correrán ríos de agua viva.
39 He was speaking of the Spirit which those who believed in him were to receive; for there was no Spiritas yet because Jesus had not yet been glorified.	39 Esto lo deciá refiriéndose al Espíritu que iban a recibir los que creyeran en él. Porque aún no había Espíritu, pues todavía Jesús no había sido glorificado.
40 Some of the crowd who had been listening said, 'He is indeed the prophet,'	40 Muchos entre la gente, que le habían oído estas palabras, decían: «Este es verdaderamente el profeta».
41 and some said, 'He is the Christ,' but others said, 'Would the Christ come from Galilee?	41 Otros decían: «Este es el Cristo». Pero otros replicaban: «¿Acaso va a venir de Galilea el Cristo?
42 Does not scripture say that the Christ must be descended from David and come from Bethlehem, thevil age where David was?'	42 ¿No dice la Escritura que el Cristo vendrá de la descendencia de David y de Belén, el pueblo de donde era David?»
43 So the people could not agree about him.	43 Se originó, pues, una disensión entre la gente por causa de él.
44 Some wanted to arrest him, but no one actual y laid a hand on him.	44 Algunos de ellos querían detenerle, pero nadie le echó mano.
45 The guards went back to the chief priests and Pharisees who said to them, 'Why haven't you broughthim?'	45 Los guardias volvieron donde los sumos sacerdotes y los fariseos. Estos les dijeron: «¿Por qué no le habéis traído?»
46 The guards replied, 'No one has ever spoken like this man.'	46 Respondieron los guardias: «Jamás un hombre ha hablado como habla ese hombre».
47 'So,' the Pharisees answered, 'you, too, have been led astray?	47 Los fariseos les respondieron: «¿Vosotros también os habéis dejado embaucar?
48 Have any of the authorities come to believe in him? Any of the Pharisees?	48 ¿Acaso ha creído en él algún magistrado o algún fariseo?
49 This rabble knows nothing about the Law -- they are damned.'	49 Pero esa gente que no conoce la Ley son unos malditos».
50 One of them, Nicodemus -- the same man who had come to Jesus earlier -- said to them,	50 Les dice Nicodemo, que era uno de ellos, el que había ido anteriormente donde Jesús:
51 'But surely our Law does not al ow us to pass judgement on anyone without first giving him a hearingand discovering what he is doing?'	51 «¿Acaso nuestra Ley juzga a un hombre sin haberle antes oído y sin saber lo que hace?»
52 To this they answered, 'Are you a Galilean too? Go into the matter, and see for yourself: prophets donot arise in Galilee.'	52 Ellos le respondieron: «¿También tú eres de Galilea? Indaga y verás que de Galilea no sale ningún profeta».
53 They al went home,	53 Y se volvieron cada uno a su casa.
