1 After this Jesus travel ed round Galilee; he could not travel round Judaea, because the Jews wereseeking to kil him.	1 Dopo di ciò andava Gesù scorrendo per la Galilea: conciossiachè non voleva andare nella Giudea, perché Giudei cercavano di farlo morire.
2 As the Jewish feast of Shelters drew near,	2 Ed era imminente la festa de' Giùdei, i Tabernacoli.
3 his brothers said to him, 'Leave this place and go to Judaea, so that your disciples, too, can see the works you are doing;	3 Dissero pertanto a lui i suoi fratelli: Partiti di qui, e vattene nella Giudea, affinchè anche que' tuoi discepoli veggano le opere, che tu fai.
4 no one who wants to be publicly known acts in secret; if this is what you are doing, you should revealyourself to the world.'	4 Imperocché nissuno, che cerchi d'essere acclamato dal pubblico, fa l'opere sue di nascosto: se tu fai tal cose, fatti conoscere dal mondo:
5 Not even his brothers had faith in him.	5 Imperocché i suoi fratelli non credevano in lui.
6 Jesus answered, 'For me the right time has not come yet, but for you any time is the right time.	6 Quindi disse loro Gesù: Non ancor venuto il mio tempo: ma per voi è sempre tempo.
7 The world cannot hate you, but it does hate me, because I give evidence that its ways are evil.	7 Non può il mondo odiare voi: ma odia me; perché io fo vedere, che l'opere sue sono cattive.
8 Go up to the festival yourselves: I am not going to this festival, because for me the time is not ripe yet.'	8 Andate voi a questa festa, io non vo a questa festa: perché ancora non è empito il mio tempo.
9 Having said that, he stayed behind in Galilee.	9 Detto ciò, si trattenne egli nella Galilea.
10 However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went up as well, not publicly but secretly.	10 Ma andati che furano i suor, fratelli, allora andò anche egli alla està non pubblicamente, ma quasi di soppiatto.
11 At the festival the Jews were on the look-out for him: 'Where is he?' they said.	11 Or i Giudei cercavan di lui il di della festa, e dicevano: Dov'è colui?
12 There was a great deal of talk about him in the crowds. Some said, 'He is a good man'; others, 'No, heis leading the people astray.'	12 E un gran sussurro facevasi di lui tra le turbe. Gli uni dicendo: Egli è persona dabbene. Altri: No, ma seduce il popolo.
13 Yet no one spoke about him openly, for fear of the Jews.	13 Nissuno però parlava di lui con libertà per paura de' Giudei.
14 When the festival was half over, Jesus went to the Temple and began to teach.	14 Ma scorsa la metà dei dì festivi, andò Gesù nel tempio, e predicava.
15 The Jews were astonished and said, 'How did he learn to read? He has not been educated.'	15 E ne stupivano i Giudei, e dicevano: Come mai costui sa di lettera senza avere imparato?
16 Jesus answered them: 'My teaching is not from myself: it comes from the one who sent me;	16 Rispose loro Gesù, e disse: La mia dottrina non è mia, ma di lui, che mi ha mandato.
17 anyone who is prepared to do his wil , wil know whether my teaching is from God or whether I speakon my own account.	17 Chi vorrà adempire la di lui volontà, conoscerà, se la dottrina sia dì Dio, ovvero parli io da me stesso.
18 When someone speaks on his own account, he is seeking honour for himself; but when he is seekingthe honour of the person who sent him, then he is true and altogether without dishonesty.	18 Chi parla di proprio suo movimento, cerca la sua propria gloria: ma chi cerca la gloria di colui, che lo ha mandato, questi è verace, e non è in lui iniquità.
19 Did not Moses give you the Law? And yet not one of you keeps the Law!	19 Non diede egli Mosè a voi la legge: e niuno di voi osserva la legge?
20 The crowd replied, 'You are mad! Who wants to kil you?'	20 Perché cercate voi di uccidermi? Rispose la turba, e disse: Tu se' indemoniato: chi cerca d'ucciderti?
21 Jesus answered, 'One work I did, and you are all amazed at it.	21 Rispose Gesù, e disse loro: Io feci una sola cosa, e tutti ne fate un gran dire.
22 Moses ordered you to practise circumcision -- not that it began with him, it goes back to the patriarchs-- and you circumcise on the Sabbath.	22 Per altro Mosè diede a voi la circoncisione (non che ella venga da Mosè, ma bensì da' Patriarchi), e voi circoncidete in giorno di sabato.
23 Now if someone can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the Law of Moses is not broken, why areyou angry with me for making someone completely healthy on a Sabbath?	23 Se circoncidesi l'uomo nel giorno di sabato per non iscioglier la legge di Mosè: ve la piglerete voi meco, perché ho sanato tutto l'uomo in giorno di sabato?
24 Do not keep judging according to appearances; let your judgement be according to what is right.'	24 Non giudicate secondo l'apparenza; ma giudicate con retto giudizio,
25 Meanwhile some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, 'Isn't this the man they want to kil ?	25 Dicevano pertanto alcuni Gerosolimitani: Non è questi colui, che cercano di uccidere?
26 And here he is, speaking openly, and they have nothing to say to him! Can it be true the authoritieshave recognised that he is the Christ?	26 Ed ecco che pubblicamente ragiona, e non gli dicono niente. Hann'eglino forse veracemente conosciuto i principi, che egli sia il Cristo?
27 Yet we al know where he comes from, but when the Christ appears no one wil know where he comesfrom.'	27 Noi però sappiamo, donde esca costui: il Cristo poi quando sia, che venga, nissuno sa, donde esca.
28 Then, as Jesus was teaching in the Temple, he cried out: You know me and you know where I camefrom. Yet I have not come of my own accord: but he who sent me is true; You do not know him,	28 Alzava adunque Gesù la voce insegnando nel Tempio, e dicendo; E conoscete me, e conoscete, donde esca io sia: ed io non son venuto da me, ma è verace colui, che mi ha mandato, cui voi non conoscete.
29 but I know him because I have my being from him and it was he who sent me.	29 Ma io lo conosco: perché sono da lui, ed egli è, che mi ha mandato.
30 They wanted to arrest him then, but because his hour had not yet come no one laid a hand on him.	30 Cercavano perciò di prenderlo: ma nissuno gli mise le mani addosso, perché la sua ora non era per anco venuta.
31 There were many people in the crowds, however, who believed in him; they were saying, 'When theChrist comes, wil he give more signs than this man has?'	31 Molti però del popolo credettero in lui, e dicevano: il Cristo, quando verrà, farà egli forse maggior numero di prodigj di quello, che questi fa?
32 Hearing that talk like this about him was spreading among the people, the Pharisees sent the Templeguards to arrest him.	32 Sentirono i Farisei, che tali erano nel popolo i sussurri riguardo a lui: e i Farisei, e i principi (de' sacerdoti) mandarono de' ministri, perché lo pigliassero.
33 Then Jesus said: For a short time I am with you stil ; then I shal go back to the one who sent me.	33 Disse adunque loro Gesù: Per poco sono ancora con voi: e a lui me ne vo, che mi ha mandato.
34 You will look for me and wil not find me; where I am you cannot come.	34 Cercherete di me, e non mi troverete: e dove io sono, non potete venir voi.
35 So the Jews said to one another, 'Where is he intending to go that we shal not be able to find him? Ishe intending to go abroad to the people who are dispersed among the Greeks and to teach the Greeks?	35 Dicevan perciò tra di loro i Giudei: Dove mai è per andare costui,che noi noi troveremo? Anderà forse tra le disperse nazioni, e predicherà a' gentili?
36 'Why do you want to kil me?' What does he mean when he says: "You will look for me and wil not findme; where I am, you cannot come?" '	36 Che parlare è questo, che ci fa: mi cercherete, e non mi troverete: e dove son io, non potete venir voi?
37 On the last day, the great day of the festival, Jesus stood and cried out: 'Let anyone who is thirstycome to me!	37 Ma nell'ultimo giorno, il grande della solennità, stavasi Gesù in piedi e ad alta voce diceva: Chi ha sete, venga a me, e beva.
38 Let anyone who believes in me come and drink! As scripture says, "From his heart shal flow streamsof living water." '	38 A chi crede in me, scaturiranno (come dice la Scrittura) dal seno di lui fiumi di acqua viva.
39 He was speaking of the Spirit which those who believed in him were to receive; for there was no Spiritas yet because Jesus had not yet been glorified.	39 Or questo egli lo diceva riguardo allo spirito, che erano per ricevere quelli, che credevano in lui; imperocché non sia ancora stato dato lo spirito, perché non ancora era stato glorificato Gesù.
40 Some of the crowd who had been listening said, 'He is indeed the prophet,'	40 Molti perciò di quella moltitudine avendo udito questi suoi sermoni, dicevano: Questi è veramente un Profeta.
41 and some said, 'He is the Christ,' but others said, 'Would the Christ come from Galilee?	41 Altri dicevano: Questi è il Cristo. Altri poi dicevano: Ma verrà egli il Cristo dalla Galilea?
42 Does not scripture say that the Christ must be descended from David and come from Bethlehem, thevil age where David was?'	42 Non dice la Scrittura: che dal seme di David, e dal castello di Betlemme, dove abitava David, verrà il Cristo?
43 So the people could not agree about him.	43 Nacque adunque per riguardo, a lui scissura nella moltitudine.
44 Some wanted to arrest him, but no one actual y laid a hand on him.	44 E alcuni di essi volevano pigliarlo: ma nessuno gli mise le mani addosso.
45 The guards went back to the chief priests and Pharisees who said to them, 'Why haven't you broughthim?'	45 Ritornarono pertanto i ministri ai Farisei, e ai principi de' sacerdoti; i quali disser loro: Perchè non l'avete voi menato?
46 The guards replied, 'No one has ever spoken like this man.'	46 Risposero i ministri: Nissun uomo ha parlato mai, come quest' uomo.
47 'So,' the Pharisees answered, 'you, too, have been led astray?	47 Ma i Farisei rispeser loro: Siete forse stati sedotti anche voi.
48 Have any of the authorities come to believe in him? Any of the Pharisees?	48 V'ha forse alcuno de' principali, o de' Farisei, che abbia creduto in lui?
49 This rabble knows nothing about the Law -- they are damned.'	49 Ma questa turba, che non intende la legge, è maledetta.
50 One of them, Nicodemus -- the same man who had come to Jesus earlier -- said to them,	50 Disse loro quel Nicodemo, il quale era stato di notte tempo da Gesù, ed era del loro ceto:
51 'But surely our Law does not al ow us to pass judgement on anyone without first giving him a hearingand discovering what he is doing?'	51 La nostra legge condanna ella forse un uomo prima di averlo sentito, e di aver saputo quel, ch'ei si faccia?
52 To this they answered, 'Are you a Galilean too? Go into the matter, and see for yourself: prophets donot arise in Galilee.'	52 Gli risposero, e dissero: Sei forse anche tu Galileo? Esamina le Scritture,e vedrai, che non è uscito Profeta dalla Galilea.
53 They al went home,	53 E se ne tornò ciascheduno a casa sua.
