NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 After this Jesus travel ed round Galilee; he could not travel round Judaea, because the Jews wereseeking to kil him.	1 In seguito Gesù girava per la Galilea. Non voleva infatti girare per la Giudea, perché i Giudei cercavano di ucciderlo.
2 As the Jewish feast of Shelters drew near,	2 Era prossima la festa dei Giudei, quella delle Capanne.
3 his brothers said to him, 'Leave this place and go to Judaea, so that your disciples, too, can see the works you are doing;	3 Gli dissero i suoi fratelli: "Parti di qui e va' nella Giudea, affinché anche i tuoi discepoli vedano le opere che tu fai.
4 no one who wants to be publicly known acts in secret; if this is what you are doing, you should revealyourself to the world.'	4 Nessuno infatti agisce in segreto, quando cerca di mettersi in mostra. Se tu fai queste cose, manifestati al mondo".
5 Not even his brothers had faith in him.	5 Infatti nemmeno i suoi fratelli credevano in lui.
6 Jesus answered, 'For me the right time has not come yet, but for you any time is the right time.	6 Gesù disse loro: "Non è ancora il mio tempo, il vostro tempo è sempre disponibile.
7 The world cannot hate you, but it does hate me, because I give evidence that its ways are evil.	7 Non può il mondo odiare voi, invece odia me, perché io attesto contro di lui che le sue opere sono malvagie.
8 Go up to the festival yourselves: I am not going to this festival, because for me the time is not ripe yet.'	8 Salite voi alla festa. Io non salgo a questa festa, perché il mio tempo non è ancora compiuto".
9 Having said that, he stayed behind in Galilee.	9 Detto ciò, rimase in Galilea.
10 However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went up as well, not publicly but secretly.	10 Quando i suoi fratelli furono saliti alla festa, allora anche egli vi salì, non pubblicamente, ma quasi in segreto.
11 At the festival the Jews were on the look-out for him: 'Where is he?' they said.	11 I Giudei lo cercavano durante la festa e dicevano: "Lui, dov'è?".
12 There was a great deal of talk about him in the crowds. Some said, 'He is a good man'; others, 'No, heis leading the people astray.'	12 E circolavano molte voci a suo riguardo in mezzo alle folle. Alcuni dicevano: "E' buono". Altri dicevano: "No, anzi inganna la gente".
13 Yet no one spoke about him openly, for fear of the Jews.	13 Nessuno però parlava pubblicamente di lui per paura dei Giudei.
14 When the festival was half over, Jesus went to the Temple and began to teach.	14 Quando la festa fu a metà Gesù salì al tempio e insegnava.
15 The Jews were astonished and said, 'How did he learn to read? He has not been educated.'	15 I Giudei erano stupiti e dicevano: "Come mai costui sa di lettere senza essere stato a scuola?".
16 Jesus answered them: 'My teaching is not from myself: it comes from the one who sent me;	16 Gesù rispose loro: "La mia dottrina non è mia, ma di Colui che mi ha mandato.
17 anyone who is prepared to do his wil , wil know whether my teaching is from God or whether I speakon my own account.	17 Se uno vuol fare la sua volontà, conoscerà riguardo alla dottrina se è da Dio o se parlo da me stesso.
18 When someone speaks on his own account, he is seeking honour for himself; but when he is seekingthe honour of the person who sent him, then he is true and altogether without dishonesty.	18 Colui che parla da se stesso cerca la propria gloria, chi invece cerca la gloria di Colui che l'ha mandato, questi è veritiero e in lui non c'è impostura.
19 Did not Moses give you the Law? And yet not one of you keeps the Law!	19 Mosè non vi ha dato la legge? Ma nessuno di voi mette in pratica la legge. Perché cercate di uccidermi?".
20 The crowd replied, 'You are mad! Who wants to kil you?'	20 Rispose la folla: "Tu hai un demonio; chi cerca di ucciderti?".
21 Jesus answered, 'One work I did, and you are all amazed at it.	21 Rispose loro Gesù: "Ho fatto una sola opera e tutti rimanete stupiti per questo.
22 Moses ordered you to practise circumcision -- not that it began with him, it goes back to the patriarchs-- and you circumcise on the Sabbath.	22 Poiché Mosè ha dato la circoncisione -- non che sia da Mosè, ma dai patriarchi --, circoncidete una persona anche di sabato.
23 Now if someone can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the Law of Moses is not broken, why areyou angry with me for making someone completely healthy on a Sabbath?	23 Se una persona riceve la circoncisione di sabato perché non sia violata la legge di Mosè, vi sdegnate contro di me perché ho risanato di sabato una persona intera?
24 Do not keep judging according to appearances; let your judgement be according to what is right.'	24 Non giudicate secondo l'apparenza, ma giudicate secondo giustizia".
25 Meanwhile some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, 'Isn't this the man they want to kil ?	25 Dicevano allora alcuni gerosolimitani: "Non è questi colui che cercano di uccidere?
26 And here he is, speaking openly, and they have nothing to say to him! Can it be true the authoritieshave recognised that he is the Christ?	26 Ecco che parla pubblicamente e non gli dicono nulla. Non avranno forse riconosciuto veramente i capi che questi è il Cristo?
27 Yet we al know where he comes from, but when the Christ appears no one wil know where he comesfrom.'	27 Ma costui sappiamo donde è, mentre il Cristo, quando viene, nessuno sa di dove è".
28 Then, as Jesus was teaching in the Temple, he cried out: You know me and you know where I camefrom. Yet I have not come of my own accord: but he who sent me is true; You do not know him,	28 Gesù, che insegnava nel tempio, proclamò: "Voi mi conoscete e sapete donde sono. Eppure non sono venuto da me stesso, ma è veritiero Colui che mi ha mandato, che voi non conoscete.
29 but I know him because I have my being from him and it was he who sent me.	29 Io lo conosco perché sono da lui ed è lui che mi ha mandato".
30 They wanted to arrest him then, but because his hour had not yet come no one laid a hand on him.	30 Cercavano allora di prenderlo, ma nessuno gli mise le mani addosso, perché non era ancora giunta la sua ora.
31 There were many people in the crowds, however, who believed in him; they were saying, 'When theChrist comes, wil he give more signs than this man has?'	31 Molti della folla però credettero in lui e dicevano: "Il Cristo, quando verrà, farà più segni di quelli che ha fatto costui?".
32 Hearing that talk like this about him was spreading among the people, the Pharisees sent the Templeguards to arrest him.	32 I farisei sentirono che circolavano fra il popolo queste voci su di lui, e i sacerdoti-capi e i farisei mandarono delle guardie per arrestarlo.
33 Then Jesus said: For a short time I am with you stil ; then I shal go back to the one who sent me.	33 Disse allora Gesù: "Ancora un po' di tempo sono con voi; poi me ne vado a Colui che mi ha mandato.
34 You will look for me and wil not find me; where I am you cannot come.	34 Mi cercherete e non mi troverete e dove sono io voi non potete venire".
35 So the Jews said to one another, 'Where is he intending to go that we shal not be able to find him? Ishe intending to go abroad to the people who are dispersed among the Greeks and to teach the Greeks?	35 Dissero dunque i Giudei fra loro: "Dove sta per andarsene costui che noi non potremo trovarlo? Sta forse per andarsene nella diaspora dei Greci ed istruire i Greci?
36 'Why do you want to kil me?' What does he mean when he says: "You will look for me and wil not findme; where I am, you cannot come?" '	36 Cos'ha voluto dire con questo discorso: "Mi cercherete e non mi troverete e dove sono io voi non potete venire"?".
37 On the last day, the great day of the festival, Jesus stood and cried out: 'Let anyone who is thirstycome to me!	37 L'ultimo giorno, quello solenne della festa, Gesù stava in piedi e proclamò a gran voce: "Se qualcuno ha sete, venga a me e beva.
38 Let anyone who believes in me come and drink! As scripture says, "From his heart shal flow streamsof living water." '	38 Colui che crede in me, come disse la Scrittura: Dal suo ventre sgorgheranno fiumi di acqua viva".
39 He was speaking of the Spirit which those who believed in him were to receive; for there was no Spiritas yet because Jesus had not yet been glorified.	39 Questo lo disse riferendosi allo Spirito che stavano per ricevere coloro che credevano in lui. Infatti non c'era ancora lo Spirito, perché Gesù non era stato ancora glorificato.
40 Some of the crowd who had been listening said, 'He is indeed the prophet,'	40 Tra la folla, coloro che avevano udito queste parole dicevano: "Questi è veramente il profeta".
41 and some said, 'He is the Christ,' but others said, 'Would the Christ come from Galilee?	41 Altri dicevano: "Questi è il Cristo". Ma altri osservavano: "Forse che il Cristo viene dalla Galilea?
42 Does not scripture say that the Christ must be descended from David and come from Bethlehem, thevil age where David was?'	42 Non dice la Scrittura che il Cristo viene dalla stirpe di Davide e dal villaggio di Betlemme dove viveva Davide?".
43 So the people could not agree about him.	43 Si creò allora una divisione fra la gente a causa di lui.
44 Some wanted to arrest him, but no one actual y laid a hand on him.	44 Alcuni avrebbero voluto arrestarlo, ma nessuno gli mise le mani addosso.
45 The guards went back to the chief priests and Pharisees who said to them, 'Why haven't you broughthim?'	45 Le guardie ritornarono dai sacerdoti-capi e dai farisei e quelli dissero loro: "Perché non l'avete condotto?".
46 The guards replied, 'No one has ever spoken like this man.'	46 Risposero le guardie: "Nessun uomo ha mai parlato così".
47 'So,' the Pharisees answered, 'you, too, have been led astray?	47 Allora ribatterono loro i farisei: "Anche voi vi siete lasciati ingannare?
48 Have any of the authorities come to believe in him? Any of the Pharisees?	48 C'è uno solo dei capi o dei farisei che abbia creduto a lui?
49 This rabble knows nothing about the Law -- they are damned.'	49 Ma questa gentaglia che non conosce la legge è maledetta".
50 One of them, Nicodemus -- the same man who had come to Jesus earlier -- said to them,	50 Uno di loro, Nicodemo, quello che era andato precedentemente da lui, dice loro:
51 'But surely our Law does not al ow us to pass judgement on anyone without first giving him a hearingand discovering what he is doing?'	51 "Giudica forse la nostra legge qualcuno senza che prima lo si ascolti, in modo che si sappia che cosa fa?".
52 To this they answered, 'Are you a Galilean too? Go into the matter, and see for yourself: prophets donot arise in Galilee.'	52 Gli risposero: "Sei forse anche tu della Galilea? Studia a fondo e vedrai che non sorge profeta dalla Galilea".
53 They al went home,	53 E se ne andarono ciascuno a casa sua.
