John 6

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 After this, Jesus crossed the Sea of Galilee -- or of Tiberias-	1 Après cela, Jésus s'en alla de l'autre côté de la mer de Galilée ou de Tibériade.
2 and a large crowd followed him, impressed by the signs he had done in curing the sick.	2 Une grande foule le suivait, à la vue des signes qu'il opérait sur les malades.
3 Jesus climbed the hillside and sat down there with his disciples.	3 Jésus gravit la montagne et là, il s'assit avec ses disciples.
4 The time of the Jewish Passover was near.	4 Or la Pâque, la fête des Juifs, était proche.
5 Looking up, Jesus saw the crowds approaching and said to Philip, 'Where can we buy some bread forthese people to eat?'	5 Levant alors les yeux et voyant qu'une grande foule venait à lui, Jésus dit à Philippe: "Où achèterons-nous des pains pour que mangent ces gens?"
6 He said this only to put Philip to the test; he himself knew exactly what he was going to do.	6 Il disait cela pour le mettre à l'épreuve, car lui-même savait ce qu'il allait faire.
7 Philip answered, 'Two hundred denari would not buy enough to give them a little piece each.'	7 Philippe lui répondit: "Deux deniers de pain ne suffisent pas pour que chacun en reçoive un petitmorceau."
8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said,	8 Un de ses disciples, André, le frère de Simon-Pierre, lui dit:
9 'Here is a small boy with five barley loaves and two fish; but what is that among so many?'	9 "Il y a ici un enfant, qui a cinq pains d'orge et deux poissons; mais qu'est-ce que cela pour tant demonde?"
10 Jesus said to them, 'Make the people sit down.' There was plenty of grass there, and as many as fivethousand men sat down.	10 Jésus leur dit: "Faites s'étendre les gens." Il y avait beaucoup d'herbe en ce lieu. Ils s'étendirent donc,au nombre d'environ 5.000 hommes.
11 Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were sitting there; he thendid the same with the fish, distributing as much as they wanted.	11 Alors Jésus prit les pains et, ayant rendu grâces, il les distribua aux convives, de même aussi pour lespoissons, autant qu'ils en voulaient.
12 When they had eaten enough he said to the disciples, 'Pick up the pieces left over, so that nothing iswasted.'	12 Quand ils furent repus, il dit à ses disciples: "Rassemblez les morceaux en surplus, afin que rien nesoit perdu."
13 So they picked them up and fil ed twelve large baskets with scraps left over from the meal of fivebarley loaves.	13 Ils les rassemblèrent donc et remplirent douze couffins avec les morceaux qui, des cinq pains d'orge,se trouvaient en surplus à ceux qui avaient mangé.
14 Seeing the sign that he had done, the people said, 'This is indeed the prophet who is to come into theworld.'	14 A la vue du signe qu'il venait de faire, les gens disaient: "C'est vraiment lui le prophète qui doit venirdans le monde."
15 Jesus, as he realised they were about to come and take him by force and make him king, fled back tothe hil s alone.	15 Alors Jésus, se rendant compte qu'ils allaient venir s'emparer de lui pour le faire roi, s'enfuit ànouveau dans la montagne, tout seul.
16 That evening the disciples went down to the shore of the sea	16 Quand le soir fut venu, ses disciples descendirent à la mer,
17 and got into a boat to make for Capernaum on the other side of the sea. It was getting dark by nowand Jesus had stil not rejoined them.	17 et, montant en bateau, ils se rendaient de l'autre côté de la mer à Capharnaüm. Il faisait déjà nuit, Jésusn'était pas encore venu les rejoindre;
18 The wind was strong, and the sea was getting rough.	18 et la mer, comme soufflait un grand vent, se soulevait.
19 They had rowed three or four miles when they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming towards theboat. They were afraid,	19 Ils avaient ramé environ 25 ou 30 stades, quand ils voient Jésus marcher sur la mer et s'approcher dubateau. Ils eurent peur.
20 but he said, 'It's me. Don't be afraid.'	20 Mais il leur dit: "C'est moi. N'ayez pas peur."
21 They were ready to take him into the boat, and immediately it reached the shore at the place they weremaking for.	21 Ils étaient disposés à le prendre dans le bateau, mais aussitôt le bateau toucha terre là où ils serendaient.
22 Next day, the crowd that had stayed on the other side saw that only one boat had been there, and thatJesus had not got into the boat with his disciples, but that the disciples had set off by themselves.	22 Le lendemain, la foule qui se tenait de l'autre côté de la mer vit qu'il n'y avait eu là qu'une barque etque Jésus n'était pas monté dans le bateau avec ses disciples, mais que seuls ses disciples s'en étaient allés.
23 Other boats, however, had put in from Tiberias, near the place where the bread had been eaten.	23 Cependant, de Tibériade des bateaux vinrent près du lieu où l'on avait mangé le pain.
24 When the people saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into those boats andcrossed to Capernaum to look for Jesus.	24 Quand donc la foule vit que Jésus n'était pas là, ni ses disciples non plus, les gens s'embarquèrent etvinrent à Capharnaüm à la recherche de Jésus.
25 When they found him on the other side, they said to him, 'Rabbi, when did you come here?'	25 L'ayant trouvé de l'autre côté de la mer, ils lui dirent: "Rabbi, quand es-tu arrivé ici?"
26 Jesus answered: In al truth I tel you, you are looking for me not because you have seen the signs butbecause you had al the bread you wanted to eat.	26 Jésus leur répondit: "En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, vous me cherchez, non pas parce que vousavez vu des signes, mais parce que vous avez mangé du pain et avez été rassasiés.
27 Do not work for food that goes bad, but work for food that endures for eternal life, which the Son ofman wil give you, for on him the Father, God himself, has set his seal.	27 Travaillez non pour la nourriture qui se perd, mais pour la nourriture qui demeure en vie éternelle,celle que vous donnera le Fils de l'homme, car c'est lui que le Père, Dieu, a marqué de son sceau."
28 Then they said to him, 'What must we do if we are to carry out God's work?'	28 Ils lui dirent alors: "Que devons-nous faire pour travailler aux oeuvres de Dieu?"
29 Jesus gave them this answer, 'This is carrying out God's work: you must believe in the one he hassent.'	29 Jésus leur répondit: "L'oeuvre de Dieu, c'est que vous croyiez en celui qu'il a envoyé."
30 So they said, 'What sign wil you yourself do, the sight of which wil make us believe in you? What workwil you do?	30 Ils lui dirent alors: "Quel signe fais-tu donc, pour qu'à sa vue nous te croyions? Quelle oeuvreaccomplis-tu?
31 Our fathers ate manna in the desert; as scripture says: He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'	31 Nos pères ont mangé la manne dans le désert, selon ce qui est écrit: Il leur a donné à manger du painvenu du ciel."
32 Jesus answered them: In al truth I tel you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, itis my Father who gives you the bread from heaven, the true bread;	32 Jésus leur répondit: "En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, non, ce n'est pas Moïse qui vous a donné lepain qui vient du ciel; mais c'est mon Père qui vous le donne, le pain qui vient du ciel, le vrai;
33 for the bread of God is the bread which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.	33 car le pain de Dieu, c'est celui qui descend du ciel et donne la vie au monde."
34 'Sir,' they said, 'give us that bread always.'	34 Ils lui dirent alors: "Seigneur, donne-nous toujours ce pain-là."
35 Jesus answered them: I am the bread of life. No one who comes to me wil ever hunger; no one whobelieves in me wil ever thirst.	35 Jésus leur dit: "Je suis le pain de vie. Qui vient à moi n'aura jamais faim; qui croit en moi n'aurajamais soif.
36 But, as I have told you, you can see me and stil you do not believe.	36 Mais je vous l'ai dit: vous me voyez et vous ne croyez pas.
37 Everyone whom the Father gives me will come to me; I will certainly not reject anyone who comes tome,	37 Tout ce que me donne le Père viendra à moi, et celui qui vient à moi, je ne le jetterai pas dehors;
38 because I have come from heaven, not to do my own wil , but to do the wil of him who sent me.	38 car je suis descendu du ciel pour faire non pas ma volonté, mais la volonté de celui qui m'a envoyé.
39 Now the wil of him who sent me is that I should lose nothing of al that he has given to me, but that Ishould raise it up on the last day.	39 Or c'est la volonté de celui qui m'a envoyé que je ne perde rien de tout ce qu'il m'a donné, mais que jele ressuscite au dernier jour.
40 It is my Father's wil that whoever sees the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and that Ishould raise that person up on the last day.	40 Oui, telle est la volonté de mon Père, que quiconque voit le Fils et croit en lui ait la vie éternelle, et jele ressusciterai au dernier jour."
41 Meanwhile the Jews were complaining to each other about him, because he had said, 'I am the breadthat has come down from heaven.'	41 Les Juifs alors se mirent à murmurer à son sujet, parce qu'il avait dit: "Je suis le pain descendu duciel."
42 They were saying, 'Surely this is Jesus son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know. How can henow say, "I have come down from heaven?" '	42 Ils disaient: "Celui-là n'est-il pas Jésus, le fils de Joseph, dont nous connaissons le père et la mère?Comment peut-il dire maintenant: Je suis descendu du ciel?"
43 Jesus said in reply to them, 'Stop complaining to each other.	43 Jésus leur répondit: "Ne murmurez pas entre vous.
44 'No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me, and I wil raise that person up onthe last day.	44 Nul ne peut venir à moi si le Père qui m'a envoyé ne l'attire; et moi, je le ressusciterai au dernier jour.
45 It is written in the prophets: They wil al be taught by God; everyone who has listened to the Father,and learnt from him, comes to me.	45 Il est écrit dans les prophètes: Ils seront tous enseignés par Dieu. Quiconque s'est mis à l'écoute duPère et à son école vient à moi.
46 Not that anybody has seen the Father, except him who has his being from God: he has seen theFather.	46 Non que personne ait vu le Père, sinon celui qui vient d'auprès de Dieu: celui-là a vu le Père.
47 In al truth I tel you, everyone who believes has eternal life.	47 En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, celui qui croit a la vie éternelle.
48 I am the bread of life.	48 Je suis le pain de vie.
49 Your fathers ate manna in the desert and they are dead;	49 Vos pères, dans le désert, ont mangé la manne et sont morts;
50 but this is the bread which comes down from heaven, so that a person may eat it and not die.	50 ce pain est celui qui descend du ciel pour qu'on le mange et ne meure pas.
51 I am the living bread which has come down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live for ever;and the bread that I shal give is my flesh, for the life of the world.'	51 Je suis le pain vivant, descendu du ciel. Qui mangera ce pain vivra à jamais. Et même, le pain que jedonnerai, c'est ma chair pour la vie du monde."
52 Then the Jews started arguing among themselves, 'How can this man give us his flesh to eat?'	52 Les Juifs alors se mirent à discuter fort entre eux; ils disaient: "Comment celui-là peut-il nous donnersa chair à manger?"
53 Jesus replied to them: In al truth I tell you, if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink hisblood, you have no life in you.	53 Alors Jésus leur dit: "En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, si vous ne mangez la chair du Fils de l'hommeet ne buvez son sang, vous n'aurez pas la vie en vous.
54 Anyone who does eat my flesh and drink my blood has eternal life, and I shal raise that person up onthe last day.	54 Qui mange ma chair et boit mon sang a la vie éternelle et je le ressusciterai au dernier jour.
55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.	55 Car ma chair est vraiment une nourriture et mon sang vraiment une boisson.
56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me and I live in that person.	56 Qui mange ma chair et boit mon sang demeure en moi et moi en lui.
57 As the living Father sent me and I draw life from the Father, so whoever eats me wil also draw lifefrom me.	57 De même que le Père, qui est vivant, m'a envoyé et que je vis par le Père, de même celui qui memange, lui aussi vivra par moi.
58 This is the bread which has come down from heaven; it is not like the bread our ancestors ate: theyare dead, but anyone who eats this bread wil live for ever.	58 Voici le pain descendu du ciel; il n'est pas comme celui qu'ont mangé les pères et ils sont morts; quimange ce pain vivra à jamais."
59 This is what he taught at Capernaum in the synagogue.	59 Tel fut l'enseignement qu'il donna dans une synagogue à Capharnaüm.
60 After hearing it, many of his fol owers said, 'This is intolerable language. How could anyone accept it?'	60 Après l'avoir entendu, beaucoup de ses disciples dirent: "Elle est dure, cette parole! Qui peutl'écouter?"
61 Jesus was aware that his fol owers were complaining about it and said, 'Does this disturb you?	61 Mais, sachant en lui-même que ses disciples murmuraient à ce propos, Jésus leur dit: "Cela vousscandalise?
62 What if you should see the Son of man ascend to where he was before?	62 Et quand vous verrez le Fils de l'homme monter là où il était auparavant?...
63 'It is the spirit that gives life, the flesh has nothing to offer. The words I have spoken to you are spiritand they are life.	63 C'est l'esprit qui vivifie, la chair ne sert de rien. Les paroles que je vous ai dites sont esprit et elles sontvie.
64 'But there are some of you who do not believe.' For Jesus knew from the outset who did not believeand who was to betray him.	64 Mais il en est parmi vous qui ne croient pas." Jésus savait en effet dès le commencement qui étaientceux qui ne croyaient pas et qui était celui qui le livrerait.
65 He went on, 'This is why I told you that no one could come to me except by the gift of the Father.'	65 Et il disait: "Voilà pourquoi je vous ai dit que nul ne peut venir à moi, si cela ne lui est donné par lePère."
66 After this, many of his disciples went away and accompanied him no more.	66 Dès lors, beaucoup de ses disciples se retirèrent, et ils n'allaient plus avec lui.
67 Then Jesus said to the Twelve, 'What about you, do you want to go away too?'	67 Jésus dit alors aux Douze: "Voulez-vous partir, vous aussi?"
68 Simon Peter answered, 'Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the message of eternal life,	68 Simon-Pierre lui répondit: "Seigneur, à qui irons-nous? Tu as les paroles de la vie éternelle.
69 and we believe; we have come to know that you are the Holy One of God.'	69 Nous, nous croyons, et nous avons reconnu que tu es le Saint de Dieu."
70 Jesus replied to them, 'Did I not choose the Twelve of you? Yet one of you is a devil.'	70 Jésus leur répondit: "N'est-ce pas moi qui vous ai choisis, vous, les Douze? Et l'un d'entre vous est undémon."
71 He meant Judas son of Simon Iscariot, since this was the man, one of the Twelve, who was to betrayhim.	71 Il parlait de Judas, fils de Simon Iscariote; c'est lui en effet qui devait le livrer, lui, l'un des Douze.
