NEW JERUSALEMDOUAI-RHEIMS
After this, Jesus crossed the Sea of Galilee -- or of Tiberias-1 After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is that of Tiberias.
and a large crowd followed him, impressed by the signs he had done in curing the sick.2 And a great multitude followed him, because they saw the miracles which he did on them that were diseased.
Jesus climbed the hillside and sat down there with his disciples.3 Jesus therefore went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples.
The time of the Jewish Passover was near.4 Now the pasch, the festival day of the Jews, was near at hand.
Looking up, Jesus saw the crowds approaching and said to Philip, 'Where can we buy some bread forthese people to eat?'5 When Jesus therefore had lifted up his eyes, and seen that a very great multitude cometh to him, he said to Philip: Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?
He said this only to put Philip to the test; he himself knew exactly what he was going to do.6 And this he said to try him; for he himself knew what he would do.
Philip answered, 'Two hundred denari would not buy enough to give them a little piece each.'7 Philip answered him: Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one may take a little.
One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said,8 One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, saith to him:
'Here is a small boy with five barley loaves and two fish; but what is that among so many?'9 There is a boy here that hath five barley loaves, and two fishes; but what are these among so many?
Jesus said to them, 'Make the people sit down.' There was plenty of grass there, and as many as fivethousand men sat down.10 Then Jesus said: Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. The men therefore sat down, in number about five thousand.
Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were sitting there; he thendid the same with the fish, distributing as much as they wanted.11 And Jesus took the loaves: and when he had given thanks, he distributed to them that were set down. In like manner also of the fishes, as much as they would.
When they had eaten enough he said to the disciples, 'Pick up the pieces left over, so that nothing iswasted.'12 And when they were filled, he said to his disciples: Gather up the fragments that remain, lest they be lost.
So they picked them up and fil ed twelve large baskets with scraps left over from the meal of fivebarley loaves.13 They gathered up therefore, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above to them that had eaten.
Seeing the sign that he had done, the people said, 'This is indeed the prophet who is to come into theworld.'14 Now those men, when they had seen what a miracle Jesus had done, said: This is of a truth the prophet, that is to come into the world.
Jesus, as he realised they were about to come and take him by force and make him king, fled back tothe hil s alone.15 Jesus therefore, when he knew that they would come to take him by force, and make him king, fled again into the mountain himself alone.
That evening the disciples went down to the shore of the sea16 And when evening was come, his disciples went down to the sea.
and got into a boat to make for Capernaum on the other side of the sea. It was getting dark by nowand Jesus had stil not rejoined them.17 And when they had gone up into a ship, they went over the sea to Capharnaum; and it was now dark, and Jesus was not come unto them.
The wind was strong, and the sea was getting rough.18 And the sea arose, by reason of a great wind that blew.
They had rowed three or four miles when they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming towards theboat. They were afraid,19 When they had rowed therefore about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking upon the sea, and drawing nigh to the ship, and they were afraid.
but he said, 'It's me. Don't be afraid.'20 But he saith to them: It is I; be not afraid.
They were ready to take him into the boat, and immediately it reached the shore at the place they weremaking for.21 They were willing therefore to take him into the ship; and presently the ship was at the land to which they were going.
Next day, the crowd that had stayed on the other side saw that only one boat had been there, and thatJesus had not got into the boat with his disciples, but that the disciples had set off by themselves.22 The next day, the multitude that stood on the other side of the sea, saw that there was no other ship there but one, and that Jesus had not entered into the ship with his disciples, but that his disciples were gone away alone.
Other boats, however, had put in from Tiberias, near the place where the bread had been eaten.23 But other ships came in from Tiberias; nigh unto the place where they had eaten the bread, the Lord giving thanks.
When the people saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into those boats andcrossed to Capernaum to look for Jesus.24 When therefore the multitude saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they took shipping, and came to Capharnaum, seeking for Jesus.
When they found him on the other side, they said to him, 'Rabbi, when did you come here?'25 And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him: Rabbi, when camest thou hither?
Jesus answered: In al truth I tel you, you are looking for me not because you have seen the signs butbecause you had al the bread you wanted to eat.26 Jesus answered them, and said: Amen, amen I say to you, you seek me, not because you have seen miracles, but because you did eat of the loaves, and were filled.
Do not work for food that goes bad, but work for food that endures for eternal life, which the Son ofman wil give you, for on him the Father, God himself, has set his seal.27 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that which endureth unto life everlasting, which the Son of man will give you. For him hath God, the Father, sealed.
Then they said to him, 'What must we do if we are to carry out God's work?'28 They said therefore unto him: What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?
Jesus gave them this answer, 'This is carrying out God's work: you must believe in the one he hassent.'29 Jesus answered, and said to them: This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he hath sent.
So they said, 'What sign wil you yourself do, the sight of which wil make us believe in you? What workwil you do?30 They said therefore to him: What sign therefore dost thou shew, that we may see, and may believe thee? What dost thou work?
Our fathers ate manna in the desert; as scripture says: He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'31 Our fathers did eat manna in the desert, as it is written: He gave them bread from heaven to eat.
Jesus answered them: In al truth I tel you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, itis my Father who gives you the bread from heaven, the true bread;32 Then Jesus said to them: Amen, amen I say to you; Moses gave you not bread from heaven, but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.
for the bread of God is the bread which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.33 For the bread of God is that which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life to the world.
'Sir,' they said, 'give us that bread always.'34 They said therefore unto him: Lord, give us always this bread.
Jesus answered them: I am the bread of life. No one who comes to me wil ever hunger; no one whobelieves in me wil ever thirst.35 And Jesus said to them: I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall not hunger: and he that believeth in me shall never thirst.
But, as I have told you, you can see me and stil you do not believe.36 But I said unto you, that you also have seen me, and you believe not.
Everyone whom the Father gives me will come to me; I will certainly not reject anyone who comes tome,37 All that the Father giveth to me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me, I will not cast out.
because I have come from heaven, not to do my own wil , but to do the wil of him who sent me.38 Because I came down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him that sent me.
Now the wil of him who sent me is that I should lose nothing of al that he has given to me, but that Ishould raise it up on the last day.39 Now this is the will of the Father who sent me: that of all that he hath given me, I should lose nothing; but should raise it up again in the last day.
It is my Father's wil that whoever sees the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and that Ishould raise that person up on the last day.40 And this is the will of my Father that sent me: that every one who seeth the Son, and believeth in him, may have life everlasting, and I will raise him up in the last day.
Meanwhile the Jews were complaining to each other about him, because he had said, 'I am the breadthat has come down from heaven.'41 The Jews therefore murmured at him, because he had said: I am the living bread which came down from heaven.
They were saying, 'Surely this is Jesus son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know. How can henow say, "I have come down from heaven?" '42 And they said: Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How then saith he, I came down from heaven?
Jesus said in reply to them, 'Stop complaining to each other.43 Jesus therefore answered, and said to them: Murmur not among yourselves.
'No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me, and I wil raise that person up onthe last day.44 No man can come to me, except the Father, who hath sent me, draw him; and I will raise him up in the last day.
It is written in the prophets: They wil al be taught by God; everyone who has listened to the Father, and learnt from him, comes to me.45 It is written in the prophets: And they shall all be taught of God. Every one that hath heard of the Father, and hath learned, cometh to me.
Not that anybody has seen the Father, except him who has his being from God: he has seen theFather.46 Not that any man hath seen the Father; but he who is of God, he hath seen the Father.
In al truth I tel you, everyone who believes has eternal life.47 Amen, amen I say unto you: He that believeth in me, hath everlasting life.
I am the bread of life.48 I am the bread of life.
Your fathers ate manna in the desert and they are dead;49 Your fathers did eat manna in the desert, and are dead.
but this is the bread which comes down from heaven, so that a person may eat it and not die.50 This is the bread which cometh down from heaven; that if any man eat of it, he may not die.
I am the living bread which has come down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live for ever;and the bread that I shal give is my flesh, for the life of the world.'51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven.
Then the Jews started arguing among themselves, 'How can this man give us his flesh to eat?'52 If any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever; and the bread that I will give, is my flesh, for the life of the world.
Jesus replied to them: In al truth I tell you, if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink hisblood, you have no life in you.53 The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying: How can this man give us his flesh to eat?
Anyone who does eat my flesh and drink my blood has eternal life, and I shal raise that person up onthe last day.54 Then Jesus said to them: Amen, amen I say unto you: Except you eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, you shall not have life in you.
For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.55 He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath everlasting life: and I will raise him up in the last day.
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me and I live in that person.56 For my flesh is meat indeed: and my blood is drink indeed.
As the living Father sent me and I draw life from the Father, so whoever eats me wil also draw lifefrom me.57 He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, abideth in me, and I in him.
This is the bread which has come down from heaven; it is not like the bread our ancestors ate: theyare dead, but anyone who eats this bread wil live for ever.58 As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father; so he that eateth me, the same also shall live by me.
This is what he taught at Capernaum in the synagogue.59 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead. He that eateth this bread, shall live for ever.
After hearing it, many of his fol owers said, 'This is intolerable language. How could anyone accept it?'60 These things he said, teaching in the synagogue, in Capharnaum.
Jesus was aware that his fol owers were complaining about it and said, 'Does this disturb you?61 Many therefore of his disciples, hearing it, said: This saying is hard, and who can hear it?
What if you should see the Son of man ascend to where he was before?62 But Jesus, knowing in himself, that his disciples murmured at this, said to them: Doth this scandalize you?
'It is the spirit that gives life, the flesh has nothing to offer. The words I have spoken to you are spiritand they are life.63 If then you shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?
'But there are some of you who do not believe.' For Jesus knew from the outset who did not believeand who was to betray him.64 It is the spirit that quickeneth: the flesh profiteth nothing. The words that I have spoken to you, are spirit and life.
He went on, 'This is why I told you that no one could come to me except by the gift of the Father.'65 But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning, who they were that did not believe, and who he was, that would betray him.
After this, many of his disciples went away and accompanied him no more.66 And he said: Therefore did I say to you, that no man can come to me, unless it be given him by my Father.
Then Jesus said to the Twelve, 'What about you, do you want to go away too?'67 After this many of his disciples went back; and walked no more with him.
Simon Peter answered, 'Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the message of eternal life,68 Then Jesus said to the twelve: Will you also go away?
and we believe; we have come to know that you are the Holy One of God.'69 And Simon Peter answered him: Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.
Jesus replied to them, 'Did I not choose the Twelve of you? Yet one of you is a devil.'70 And we have believed and have known, that thou art the Christ, the Son of God.
He meant Judas son of Simon Iscariot, since this was the man, one of the Twelve, who was to betrayhim.71 Jesus answered them: Have not I chosen you twelve; and one of you is a devil?
Now he meant Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon: for this same was about to betray him, whereas he was one of the twelve.
