1 After this, Jesus crossed the Sea of Galilee -- or of Tiberias-	1 Dopo questo Gesù se n'andò di là dal mare di Galilea, cioè di Tiberiade:
2 and a large crowd followed him, impressed by the signs he had done in curing the sick.	2 E seguitavate una gran turba, perché vedeva i miracoli fatti da lui a prò de' malati.
3 Jesus climbed the hillside and sat down there with his disciples.	3 Salì pertanto Gesù sopra un monte: ed ivi si pose a sedere co' suoi discepoli.
4 The time of the Jewish Passover was near.	4 Ed era vicina la Pasqua, solennità de' Giudei.
5 Looking up, Jesus saw the crowds approaching and said to Philip, 'Where can we buy some bread forthese people to eat?'	5 Avendo adunque Gesù alzati gli occhi, e veduto, come una gran turba veniva da lui, disse a Filippo: Dove compreremo pane per cibar questa gente?
6 He said this only to put Philip to the test; he himself knew exactly what he was going to do.	6 Lo che egli diceva per far prova di lui: imperocché egli sapeva quello, che era per fare.
7 Philip answered, 'Two hundred denari would not buy enough to give them a little piece each.'	7 Risposegli Filippo: Dugento denari di pane non bastano per costoro a darne un piccolo pezzo per uno.
8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said,	8 Dissegli uno de' suoi discepoli, Andrea fratello di Simone Pietro:
9 'Here is a small boy with five barley loaves and two fish; but what is that among so many?'	9 Evvi un ragazzo, che ha cinque pani d'orzo, e due pesci: ma che è questo per tanta gente?
10 Jesus said to them, 'Make the people sit down.' There was plenty of grass there, and as many as fivethousand men sat down.	10 Ma Gesù disse: Fate, che costoro si mettano a sedere. Era quivi molta l'erba. Si misero pertanto a sedere in numero di circa cinque mila.
11 Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were sitting there; he thendid the same with the fish, distributing as much as they wanted.	11 Prese adunque Gesù i pani: e, rese le grazie, li distribuì a coloro, che sedevano: e il simile dei pesci, fin che ne vollero.
12 When they had eaten enough he said to the disciples, 'Pick up the pieces left over, so that nothing iswasted.'	12 E saziati che furono, disse a' suoi discepoli: Raccogliete gli avanzi, che non vadano a male.
13 So they picked them up and fil ed twelve large baskets with scraps left over from the meal of fivebarley loaves.	13 Ed essi li raccolsero, ed empirono dodici canestri di frammenti dei cinque pani di orzo, che erano avanzati a coloro, che avevano mangiato.
14 Seeing the sign that he had done, the people said, 'This is indeed the prophet who is to come into theworld.'	14 Coloro pertanto veduto il miracolo fatto da Gesù, dissero: Questo è veramente quel Profeta, che dovea venire al mondo.
15 Jesus, as he realised they were about to come and take him by force and make him king, fled back tothe hil s alone.	15 Ma Gesù conoscendo, che erano per venire a prenderlo per forza per farlo loro re, si fuggì di bel nuovo da se solo sul monte.
16 That evening the disciples went down to the shore of the sea	16 Fattasi poi sera, i suoi discepoli scesero alla marina.
17 and got into a boat to make for Capernaum on the other side of the sea. It was getting dark by nowand Jesus had stil not rejoined them.	17 Ed entrati in barca andavano tragittando il mare verso Cafarnaum: ed era già bujo: e Gesù non era andato da essi.
18 The wind was strong, and the sea was getting rough.	18 E soffiando un gran vento, il mare si alzava.
19 They had rowed three or four miles when they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming towards theboat. They were afraid,	19 Spintisi adunque innanzi circa venticinque, o trenta stadi, vedono Gesù, che camminava sul mare, e avvicinavasi alla barca, e si impaurirono.
20 but he said, 'It's me. Don't be afraid.'	20 Ma egli disse loro: Son io, non temete.
21 They were ready to take him into the boat, and immediately it reached the shore at the place they weremaking for.	21 Bramavano pertanto di riceverlo nella barca: e tosto la barca toccò la terra, dove erano incamminati.
22 Next day, the crowd that had stayed on the other side saw that only one boat had been there, and thatJesus had not got into the boat with his disciples, but that the disciples had set off by themselves.	22 Il dì seguente la turba, che era restata di là dal mare, aveva veduto, come altra barca non v'era fuori di una sola, e che Gesù non era entrato in quella co' suoi discepoli; ma i soli discepoli erano partiti:
23 Other boats, however, had put in from Tiberias, near the place where the bread had been eaten.	23 (Sopraggiunsero però altre barche da Tiberiade presso al luogo, dove, poi ché il Signore ebbe rese le grazie, avevano mangiato quel pane.)
24 When the people saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into those boats andcrossed to Capernaum to look for Jesus.	24 Avendo adunque visto la turba, che non era quivi più né Gesù, nè i suoi discepoli, entrarono anch'essi nelle barche, e andarono a Cafarnaum cercando Gesù
25 When they found him on the other side, they said to him, 'Rabbi, when did you come here?'	25 E avendolo trovato di là dal mare, gli dissero: Maestro, quando se' tu venuto qua?
26 Jesus answered: In al truth I tel you, you are looking for me not because you have seen the signs butbecause you had al the bread you wanted to eat.	26 Rispose loro Gesù, e disse: In verità, in verità vi dico: voi cercate di me non pei miracoli, che avete veduti; ma perché avete mangiato di que' pani, e ve ne siete satollati.
27 Do not work for food that goes bad, but work for food that endures for eternal life, which the Son ofman wil give you, for on him the Father, God himself, has set his seal.	27 Procacciatevi non quel cibo, che passa, ma quello, che dura sino alla vita eterna, il quale sarà a voi dato dal Figliuolo dell'uomo. Imperocché in lui impresse il suo sigillo il Padre Dio.
28 Then they said to him, 'What must we do if we are to carry out God's work?'	28 Essi però gli dissero: Che faremo noi per praticare opere grate a Dio?
29 Jesus gave them this answer, 'This is carrying out God's work: you must believe in the one he hassent.'	29 Rispose Gesù, e disse loro: Opera di Dio è questa, che crediate in colui, che egli ha mandato.
30 So they said, 'What sign wil you yourself do, the sight of which wil make us believe in you? What workwil you do?	30 Ma quelli disser a lui: Che miracolo fai tu adunque, onde vediamo, e a te crediamo? Che fai tu?
31 Our fathers ate manna in the desert; as scripture says: He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'	31 I padri nostri mangiaron nel deserto la manna, come sta scritto: Diede loro a mangiare il pane del cielo.
32 Jesus answered them: In al truth I tel you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, itis my Father who gives you the bread from heaven, the true bread;	32 Disse adunque loro Gesù: In verità, in verità vi dico: Non diede Mosè a voi il pane del cielo, ma il Padre mio da a voi il vero pane del cielo.
33 for the bread of God is the bread which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.	33 Imperocché pane di Dio è quello, che dal cielo è disceso, e da al mondo la vita.
34 'Sir,' they said, 'give us that bread always.'	34 Gli dissero adunque: Signore, da' sempre a noi un tal pane.
35 Jesus answered them: I am the bread of life. No one who comes to me wil ever hunger; no one whobelieves in me wil ever thirst.	35 Gesù disse loro: Io sono il pane di vita: chi viene a me, non patirà fame: e chi crede in me, non avrà sete mai più.
36 But, as I have told you, you can see me and stil you do not believe.	36 Ma io ve l'ho detto, che e mi avete veduto, e non credete.
37 Everyone whom the Father gives me will come to me; I will certainly not reject anyone who comes tome,	37 Verrà a me tutto quello, che il Padre da a me: e io non caccierò fuora chi viene a me:
38 because I have come from heaven, not to do my own wil , but to do the wil of him who sent me.	38 Perché sono disceso dal cielo non a fare la mia volontà ma la volontà di lui, che mi ha mandato.
39 Now the wil of him who sent me is that I should lose nothing of al that he has given to me, but that Ishould raise it up on the last day.	39 E la volontà del Padre, che mi ha mandato, si è, che di tutto quello, che egli ha dato a me, nulla io ne sperda, ma lo risusciti nell'ultimo giorno.
40 It is my Father's wil that whoever sees the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and that Ishould raise that person up on the last day.	40 E la volontà del Padre, che mi ha mandato, si è, che chiunque conosce il Figliuolo, e crede in me, abbia la vita eterna, e io lo risusciterò nell'ultimo giorno.
41 Meanwhile the Jews were complaining to each other about him, because he had said, 'I am the breadthat has come down from heaven.'	41 Mormoravano perciò di lui i Giudei, perché aveva detto: Io sono quel pane vivo, che è sceso dal cielo,
42 They were saying, 'Surely this is Jesus son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know. How can henow say, "I have come down from heaven?" '	42 E dicevano; Costui non è egli quel Gesù figliuolo di Giuseppe, del quale noti ci sono e il padre, e la madre? Come dunque dice costui: Sono sceso dal cielo?
43 Jesus said in reply to them, 'Stop complaining to each other.	43 Rispose adunque Gesù, e disse loro: Non mormorate tra voi:
44 'No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me, and I wil raise that person up onthe last day.	44 Non può alcuno venire da me, se nol tragga il Padre, che mi ha mandato: e questo io lo risusciterò nell'ultimo giorno.
45 It is written in the prophets: They wil al be taught by God; everyone who has listened to the Father,and learnt from him, comes to me.	45 Sta scritto ne' profeti: Saranno tutti ammaestrati da Dio. Chiunque pertanto ha udito, e imparato dal Padre, viene a me.
46 Not that anybody has seen the Father, except him who has his being from God: he has seen theFather.	46 Non perché alcuno abbia veduto il Padre, eccetto colui, che è da Dio, questi ha veduto il Padre.
47 In al truth I tel you, everyone who believes has eternal life.	47 In verità, in verità vi dico: chi crede in me, ha la vita eterna.
48 I am the bread of life.	48 Io sono il pane di vita.
49 Your fathers ate manna in the desert and they are dead;	49 I padri vostri mangiarono nel deserto la manna, e morirono.
50 but this is the bread which comes down from heaven, so that a person may eat it and not die.	50 Questo è quel pane disceso dal cielo: affinchè chi ne mangerà, non muoia.
51 I am the living bread which has come down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live for ever;and the bread that I shal give is my flesh, for the life of the world.'	51 Io sono il pane vivo, che son disceso dal cielo.
52 Then the Jews started arguing among themselves, 'How can this man give us his flesh to eat?'	52 Chi di un tal pane mangerà, viverà eternamente: e il pane, che io darò, ella è la carne mia per la salute del mondo.
53 Jesus replied to them: In al truth I tell you, if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink hisblood, you have no life in you.	53 Altercavano perciò tra loro i Giudei, dicendo: Come mai può costui darci a mangiare la sua carne?
54 Anyone who does eat my flesh and drink my blood has eternal life, and I shal raise that person up onthe last day.	54 Disse adunque loro Gesù: In verità, in verità vi dico: Se non mangerete la carne del Figliuolo dell'uomo, e non berrete il suo sangue, non avrete in voi la vita.
55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.	55 Chi mangia la mia carne, e beve il mio sangue, ha la vita eterna: ed io lo risusciterò nell'ultimo giorno.
56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me and I live in that person.	56 Imperocché la mia carne è veramente cibo, e il sangue mio veramente bevanda.
57 As the living Father sent me and I draw life from the Father, so whoever eats me wil also draw lifefrom me.	57 Chi mangia la mia carne, e beve il mio sangue, sta in me, e io in lui.
58 This is the bread which has come down from heaven; it is not like the bread our ancestors ate: theyare dead, but anyone who eats this bread wil live for ever.	58 Siccome mandò me quel Padre, che vive, ed io per il Padre vivo: così chi mangerà me, viverà anch' egli per me.
59 This is what he taught at Capernaum in the synagogue.	59 Questo è quel pane, che è disceso dal cielo. Non (sarà) come de' padri vostri, i quali mangiarono la manna, e morirono. Chi di questo pane mangia, viverà eternamente.
60 After hearing it, many of his fol owers said, 'This is intolerable language. How could anyone accept it?'	60 Tali cose egli disse, insegnando nella sinagoga di Cafarnaum.
61 Jesus was aware that his fol owers were complaining about it and said, 'Does this disturb you?	61 Molti perciò de' suoi discepoli, udite che le ebbero, dissero: Questo è un duro sermone, e chi può reggere ad ascoltarlo?
62 What if you should see the Son of man ascend to where he was before?	62 Conoscendo adunque Gesù da se stesso, che mormoravano per questo i suoi discepoli, disse loro: Vi scandalizzate voi di questo?
63 'It is the spirit that gives life, the flesh has nothing to offer. The words I have spoken to you are spiritand they are life.	63 Se adunque vedrete il Figliuolo dell'uomo salire, dove era prima?
64 'But there are some of you who do not believe.' For Jesus knew from the outset who did not believeand who was to betray him.	64 Lo spirito è quello, che dà la vita: la carne non giova niente: le parole, che io vi dico, sono spirito, e sono vita.
65 He went on, 'This is why I told you that no one could come to me except by the gift of the Father.'	65 Ma sono tra voi alcuni, i quali non credono. Imperocché sapeva Gesù fin da principio, chi fossero quelli, che non credevano, e chi fosse per tradirlo.
66 After this, many of his disciples went away and accompanied him no more.	66 E diceva: Per questo vi ho detto, che nissuno può venire a me, se non gli è concesso dal Padre mio.
67 Then Jesus said to the Twelve, 'What about you, do you want to go away too?'	67 Da indi in poi molti de' suoi discepoli si ritirarono indietro: e non conversavano più con lui.
68 Simon Peter answered, 'Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the message of eternal life,	68 Disse perciò Gesù ai dodici: Volete forse andarvene anche voi;
69 and we believe; we have come to know that you are the Holy One of God.'	69 Ma Simone Pietro risposegli: Signore, a chi anderemo noi? Tu hai parole di vita eterna:
70 Jesus replied to them, 'Did I not choose the Twelve of you? Yet one of you is a devil.'	70 E noi abbiam creduto, e conosciuto, che tu se' il Cristo Figliuolo di Dio.
71 He meant Judas son of Simon Iscariot, since this was the man, one of the Twelve, who was to betrayhim.	71 Rispose loro Gesù: Non sono stato io, che ho eletti voi dodici: e uno di voi è un diavolo.
	72 Voleva dire di Giuda Iscariote figliuolo di Simone: Perché questi, che era uno dei dodici, era per tradirlo.
