1 After this, Jesus crossed the Sea of Galilee -- or of Tiberias-	1 - Dopo queste cose, Gesù passò all'altra riva del mare di Galilea ossia di Tiberiade.
2 and a large crowd followed him, impressed by the signs he had done in curing the sick.	2 E lo seguiva gran folla, perchè vedeva i miracoli che egli faceva sugl'infermi.
3 Jesus climbed the hillside and sat down there with his disciples.	3 Gesù salì sul monte e quivi si pose a sedere coi suoi discepoli.
4 The time of the Jewish Passover was near.	4 Era vicina la Pasqua, la festa dei Giudei.
5 Looking up, Jesus saw the crowds approaching and said to Philip, 'Where can we buy some bread forthese people to eat?'	5 Ora Gesù, alzando gli occhi e vedendo la gran moltitudine venuta a lui, disse a Filippo: «Dove compreremo tanto pane, da dar da mangiare a questa gente?».
6 He said this only to put Philip to the test; he himself knew exactly what he was going to do.	6 Egli parlava così per metterlo alla prova, perchè sapeva quel che avrebbe fatto.
7 Philip answered, 'Two hundred denari would not buy enough to give them a little piece each.'	7 Filippo gli rispose: «Duecento danari di pane non basterebbero per dare a ciascuno una piccola porzione».
8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said,	8 Uno dei discepoli, Andrea, fratello di Simon Pietro, osservò:
9 'Here is a small boy with five barley loaves and two fish; but what is that among so many?'	9 «Vi è qui un fanciullo che ha cinque pani d'orzo e due pesci; ma cos'è mai questo per tanta gente?».
10 Jesus said to them, 'Make the people sit down.' There was plenty of grass there, and as many as fivethousand men sat down.	10 Gesù ordinò: «Fateli sedere». C'era molt'erba, in quel luogo. Si sedettero in numero di circa cinquemila.
11 Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were sitting there; he thendid the same with the fish, distributing as much as they wanted.	11 Gesù prese pani e, dopo aver reso grazie, li distribuì ai seduti; lo stesso fece dei pesci dandone quanto ne vollero.
12 When they had eaten enough he said to the disciples, 'Pick up the pieces left over, so that nothing iswasted.'	12 Quando furono saziati disse ai discepoli: «Raccogliete gli avanzi perchè nulla si perda».
13 So they picked them up and fil ed twelve large baskets with scraps left over from the meal of fivebarley loaves.	13 Essi li raccolsero e riempirono dodici canestri di frammenti avanzati a coloro che avevano mangiato di quei cinque pani d'orzo.
14 Seeing the sign that he had done, the people said, 'This is indeed the prophet who is to come into theworld.'	14 La folla visto Gesù far quel miracolo, diceva: «Questi è certamente il profeta che deve apparire sulla terra!».
15 Jesus, as he realised they were about to come and take him by force and make him king, fled back tothe hil s alone.	15 Ma Gesù, sapendo che sarebbero venuti a rapirlo per farlo re, fuggì di nuovo solo sul monte.
16 That evening the disciples went down to the shore of the sea	16 Quando venne la sera, i suoi discepoli scesero al mare
17 and got into a boat to make for Capernaum on the other side of the sea. It was getting dark by nowand Jesus had stil not rejoined them.	17 e, in barca, si dirigevano all'altra riva, verso Cafarnao. Si era già fatto buio e Gesù non li aveva raggiunti,
18 The wind was strong, and the sea was getting rough.	18 e poi soffiava un gran vento, il mare si agitava.
19 They had rowed three or four miles when they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming towards theboat. They were afraid,	19 Dopo aver remato per circa venticinque o trenta stadi, visto Gesù camminare sul mare e accostarsi alla barca, ebbero paura.
20 but he said, 'It's me. Don't be afraid.'	20 Ma egli disse loro: «Sono io, non temete».
21 They were ready to take him into the boat, and immediately it reached the shore at the place they weremaking for.	21 Vollero allora prenderlo nella barca e subito la barca toccò la terra a cui erano diretti.
22 Next day, the crowd that had stayed on the other side saw that only one boat had been there, and thatJesus had not got into the boat with his disciples, but that the disciples had set off by themselves.	22 Il giorno dopo la folla, rimasta sull'altra riva del mare, aveva notato che vi era una sola barca e Gesù non era entrato in quella coi suoi discepoli, ma che questi erano partiti soli.
23 Other boats, however, had put in from Tiberias, near the place where the bread had been eaten.	23 Sopraggiunsero poi altre barche da Tiberiade, presso al luogo dove avevano mangiato il pane, dopochè il Signore aveva reso grazie.
24 When the people saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into those boats andcrossed to Capernaum to look for Jesus.	24 La turba dunque, quando vide che non c'erano nè Gesù nè i discepoli, entrò in quelle barche e andò a Cafarnao per cercare Gesù.
25 When they found him on the other side, they said to him, 'Rabbi, when did you come here?'	25 E avendolo poi trovato di là dal mare, gli domandarono: «Rabbi, quando sei venuto qua?».
26 Jesus answered: In al truth I tel you, you are looking for me not because you have seen the signs butbecause you had al the bread you wanted to eat.	26 Gesù rispose loro: «In verità, in verità vi dico che voi mi cercate non perchè avete visto dei prodigi, ma perchè avete mangiato dei pani e ne siete stati saziati.
27 Do not work for food that goes bad, but work for food that endures for eternal life, which the Son ofman wil give you, for on him the Father, God himself, has set his seal.	27 Procuratevi non il cibo che perisce, ma quello che resta per la vita eterna e che vi somministrerà il Figliuol dell'uomo; poichè lui Dio Padre ha segnato del suo suggello».
28 Then they said to him, 'What must we do if we are to carry out God's work?'	28 Gli chiesero adunque: «Che cosa dobbiam fare per compiere le opere di Dio?».
29 Jesus gave them this answer, 'This is carrying out God's work: you must believe in the one he hassent.'	29 Gesù rispose: «Questa è l'opera di Dio, che crediate in Colui che fu inviato».
30 So they said, 'What sign wil you yourself do, the sight of which wil make us believe in you? What workwil you do?	30 Gli domandarono: «Qual segno ci dai dunque per vedere, e per credere in te? Quali sono le opere tue?
31 Our fathers ate manna in the desert; as scripture says: He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'	31 I nostri padri hanno mangiato la manna nel deserto, come sta scritto: "Diede loro da mangiare un pane venuto dal cielo" ».
32 Jesus answered them: In al truth I tel you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, itis my Father who gives you the bread from heaven, the true bread;	32 Gesù rispose loro: «In verità, in verità vi dico: Mosè non vi ha dato il pane dal cielo: ma il Padre mio vi dà il vero pane dal cielo,
33 for the bread of God is the bread which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.	33 perchè pane di Dio è Colui che discende dal Cielo e dà la vita al mondo».
34 'Sir,' they said, 'give us that bread always.'	34 Essi gli dissero: «Signore, dacci sempre di questo pane».
35 Jesus answered them: I am the bread of life. No one who comes to me wil ever hunger; no one whobelieves in me wil ever thirst.	35 Gesù rispose loro: «Io sono il pane di vita! Chi viene a me non avrà più fame, e chi crede in me non avrà più sete.
36 But, as I have told you, you can see me and stil you do not believe.	36 Ma io ve l'ho detto: voi avete veduto coi vostri occhi, eppure non credete.
37 Everyone whom the Father gives me will come to me; I will certainly not reject anyone who comes tome,	37 Tutto ciò che il Padre mi dà, arriverà fino a me; e chi verrà a me, non sarà rigettato;
38 because I have come from heaven, not to do my own wil , but to do the wil of him who sent me.	38 poichè io son disceso dal cielo per fare non la mia volontà, ma la volontà di chi mi ha inviato.
39 Now the wil of him who sent me is that I should lose nothing of al that he has given to me, but that Ishould raise it up on the last day.	39 E questa è la volontà di chi mi ha inviato, del Padre, che io non perda nulla di quanto mi fu dato, ma che lo risusciti nell'ultimo giorno.
40 It is my Father's wil that whoever sees the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and that Ishould raise that person up on the last day.	40 Perchè è volontà del Padre mio, che mi ha inviato che chiunque vede il Figliuolo e crede in lui, abbia la vita eterna, ed io lo risusciterò nell'ultimo giorno».
41 Meanwhile the Jews were complaining to each other about him, because he had said, 'I am the breadthat has come down from heaven.'	41 I Giudei dunque mormoravano di lui perchè aveva detto: «Io sono il pane vivo disceso dal cielo».
42 They were saying, 'Surely this is Jesus son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know. How can henow say, "I have come down from heaven?" '	42 E andavano dicendo: «Non è forse costui Gesù, il figliuol di Giuseppe, di cui conosciamo il padre e la madre? Come mai può dire: - Io sono disceso dal cielo?».
43 Jesus said in reply to them, 'Stop complaining to each other.	43 Gesù rispose loro: «Non mormorate tra voi.
44 'No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me, and I wil raise that person up onthe last day.	44 Nessuno può venire a me se non vi è attratto dal Padre che mi ha inviato; ed io lo risusciterò nell'ultimo giorno.
45 It is written in the prophets: They wil al be taught by God; everyone who has listened to the Father,and learnt from him, comes to me.	45 Sta scritto nei Profeti: "Ed essi saranno tutti ammaestrati da Dio". Chiunque ha udito il Padre ed ha appreso, viene a me.
46 Not that anybody has seen the Father, except him who has his being from God: he has seen theFather.	46 Nessuno ha veduto il Padre, se non Colui che è da Dio; egli ha veduto il Padre.
47 In al truth I tel you, everyone who believes has eternal life.	47 In verità, in verità vi dico: Chi crede in me ha la vita eterna.
48 I am the bread of life.	48 Io sono il pane di vita.
49 Your fathers ate manna in the desert and they are dead;	49 I vostri padri mangiarono la manna nel deserto e morirono.
50 but this is the bread which comes down from heaven, so that a person may eat it and not die.	50 Questo è il pane disceso dal cielo, affinchè chi ne mangia non muoia.
51 I am the living bread which has come down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live for ever;and the bread that I shal give is my flesh, for the life of the world.'	51 Io sono il pane vivo, che discesi dal cielo.
52 Then the Jews started arguing among themselves, 'How can this man give us his flesh to eat?'	52 Se alcuno mangerà di questo pane, vivrà eternamente, e il pane che darò è la mia carne per la vita del mondo».
53 Jesus replied to them: In al truth I tell you, if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink hisblood, you have no life in you.	53 I Giudei pertanto questionarono tra loro dicendo: «Come mai costui può darci da mangiare la sua carne?».
54 Anyone who does eat my flesh and drink my blood has eternal life, and I shal raise that person up onthe last day.	54 Gesù rispose loro: «In verità, in verità vi dico: Se non mangerete la carne del Figliuol dell'uomo e non berrete il suo sangue, non avrete la vita in voi.
55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.	55 Chi mangia la mia carne e beve il mio sangue ha la vita eterna, ed io lo risusciterò nell'ultimo giorno.
56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me and I live in that person.	56 Perchè la mia carne è veramente cibo ed il mio sangue è veramente bevanda.
57 As the living Father sent me and I draw life from the Father, so whoever eats me wil also draw lifefrom me.	57 Chi mangia la mia carne e beve il mio sangue rimane in me ed io in lui.
58 This is the bread which has come down from heaven; it is not like the bread our ancestors ate: theyare dead, but anyone who eats this bread wil live for ever.	58 Come il Padre, che vive, ha inviato me, ed io vivo per il Padre, così chi mangia me, vivrà per me.
59 This is what he taught at Capernaum in the synagogue.	59 Questo è il pane disceso dal cielo; non come i vostri padri, che mangiarono la manna e morirono: chi mangia questo pane vivrà in eterno».
60 After hearing it, many of his fol owers said, 'This is intolerable language. How could anyone accept it?'	60 Gesù disse queste cose insegnando nella sinagoga di Cafarnao.
61 Jesus was aware that his fol owers were complaining about it and said, 'Does this disturb you?	61 Molti de' suoi discepoli, che l'avevano ascoltato, dissero: «Questo linguaggio è duro, e chi mai può ascoltarlo?».
62 What if you should see the Son of man ascend to where he was before?	62 Gesù conoscendo dentro di sè che i discepoli mormoravano su ciò, disse loro: «Questo vi scandalizza?
63 'It is the spirit that gives life, the flesh has nothing to offer. The words I have spoken to you are spiritand they are life.	63 E quando vedrete il Figliuol dell'uomo ritornarsene colà dov'era prima?
64 'But there are some of you who do not believe.' For Jesus knew from the outset who did not believeand who was to betray him.	64 È lo spirito che vigila; la carne non serve a nulla. Le parole che vi rivolgo sono spirito e vita.
65 He went on, 'This is why I told you that no one could come to me except by the gift of the Father.'	65 Ma vi sono tra voi alcuni che non credono». In verità Gesù sapeva, fin dal principio, chi erano coloro che non credevano, e chi era colui che lo avrebbe tradito.
66 After this, many of his disciples went away and accompanied him no more.	66 E soggiunse: «Perciò vi dissi che nessuno può venire a me, se non gli è concesso dal Padre mio».
67 Then Jesus said to the Twelve, 'What about you, do you want to go away too?'	67 Da allora parecchi de' suoi discepoli si ritrassero e non andarono più con lui.
68 Simon Peter answered, 'Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the message of eternal life,	68 Perciò Gesù disse ai Dodici: «Volete andarvene anche voi?».
69 and we believe; we have come to know that you are the Holy One of God.'	69 Ma Simon Pietro gli rispose: «Signore, e a chi ce ne andremo? Tu solo hai parole di vita eterna.
70 Jesus replied to them, 'Did I not choose the Twelve of you? Yet one of you is a devil.'	70 Noi abbiamo creduto e conosciuto che tu sei il Cristo Figlio di Dio».
71 He meant Judas son of Simon Iscariot, since this was the man, one of the Twelve, who was to betrayhim.	71 Gesù rispose: «Non fui io a eleggere voi Dodici? Eppure uno di voi è diavolo».
	72 Egli diceva di Giuda, figlio di Simone Iscariote, il quale lo avrebbe tradito, pur essendo dei Dodici.
