John 6

1 After this, Jesus crossed the Sea of Galilee -- or of Tiberias-	1 Post haec abiit Iesus trans mare Galilaeae, quod est Tiberiadis.
2 and a large crowd followed him, impressed by the signs he had done in curing the sick.	2 Etsequebatur eum multitudo magna, quia videbant signa, quae faciebat super his,qui infirmabantur.
3 Jesus climbed the hillside and sat down there with his disciples.	3 Subiit autem in montem Iesus et ibi sedebat cum discipulissuis.
4 The time of the Jewish Passover was near.	4 Erat autem proximum Pascha, dies festus Iudaeorum.
5 Looking up, Jesus saw the crowds approaching and said to Philip, 'Where can we buy some bread forthese people to eat?'	5 Cum sublevassetergo oculos Iesus et vidisset quia multitudo magna venit ad eum, dicit adPhilippum: “ Unde ememus panes, ut manducent hi? ”.
6 He said this only to put Philip to the test; he himself knew exactly what he was going to do.	6 Hoc autem dicebattentans eum; ipse enim sciebat quid esset facturus.
7 Philip answered, 'Two hundred denari would not buy enough to give them a little piece each.'	7 Respondit ei Philippus:“ Ducentorum denariorum panes non sufficiunt eis, ut unusquisque modicum quidaccipiat! ”.
8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said,	8 Dicit ei unus ex discipulis eius, Andreas frater Simonis Petri:
9 'Here is a small boy with five barley loaves and two fish; but what is that among so many?'	9 “ Est puer hic, qui habet quinque panes hordeaceos et duos pisces; sed haecquid sunt propter tantos? ”.
10 Jesus said to them, 'Make the people sit down.' There was plenty of grass there, and as many as fivethousand men sat down.	10 Dixit Iesus: “ Facite homines discumbere ”.Erat autem fenum multum in loco. Discubuerunt ergo viri numero quasi quinquemilia.
11 Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were sitting there; he thendid the same with the fish, distributing as much as they wanted.	11 Accepit ergo panes Iesus et, cum gratias egisset, distribuitdiscumbentibus; similiter et ex piscibus, quantum volebant.
12 When they had eaten enough he said to the disciples, 'Pick up the pieces left over, so that nothing iswasted.'	12 Ut autem impletisunt, dicit discipulis suis: “ Colligite, quae superaverunt, fragmenta, nequid pereat ”.
13 So they picked them up and fil ed twelve large baskets with scraps left over from the meal of fivebarley loaves.	13 Collegerunt ergo et impleverunt duodecim cophinosfragmentorum ex quinque panibus hordeaceis, quae superfuerunt his, quimanducaverunt.
14 Seeing the sign that he had done, the people said, 'This is indeed the prophet who is to come into theworld.'	14 Illi ergo homines, cum vidissent quod fecerat signum, dicebant: “ Hic estvere propheta, qui venit in mundum! ”.
15 Jesus, as he realised they were about to come and take him by force and make him king, fled back tothe hil s alone.	15 Iesus ergo, cum cognovisset quiaventuri essent, ut raperent eum et facerent eum regem, secessit iterum in montemipse solus.
16 That evening the disciples went down to the shore of the sea	16 Ut autem sero factum est, descenderunt discipuli eius ad mare
17 and got into a boat to make for Capernaum on the other side of the sea. It was getting dark by nowand Jesus had stil not rejoined them.	17 et, cumascendissent navem, veniebant trans mare in Capharnaum. Et tenebrae iam factaeerant, et nondum venerat ad eos Iesus.
18 The wind was strong, and the sea was getting rough.	18 Mare autem, vento magno flante,exsurgebat.
19 They had rowed three or four miles when they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming towards theboat. They were afraid,	19 Cum remigassent ergo quasi stadia viginti quinque aut triginta,vident Iesum ambulantem super mare et proximum navi fieri, et timuerunt.
20 but he said, 'It's me. Don't be afraid.'	20 Illeautem dicit eis: “ Ego sum, nolite timere! ”.
21 They were ready to take him into the boat, and immediately it reached the shore at the place they weremaking for.	21 Volebant ergo accipere eumin navem, et statim fuit navis ad terram, in quam ibant.
22 Next day, the crowd that had stayed on the other side saw that only one boat had been there, and thatJesus had not got into the boat with his disciples, but that the disciples had set off by themselves.	22 Altera die turba, quae stabat trans mare, vidit quia navicula alia non eratibi, nisi una, et quia non introisset cum discipulis suis Iesus in navem, sedsoli discipuli eius abiissent;
23 Other boats, however, had put in from Tiberias, near the place where the bread had been eaten.	23 aliae supervenerunt naves a Tiberiade iuxtalocum, ubi manducaverant panem, gratias agente Domino.
24 When the people saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into those boats andcrossed to Capernaum to look for Jesus.	24 Cum ergo vidissetturba quia Iesus non esset ibi neque discipuli eius, ascenderunt ipsi naviculaset venerunt Capharnaum quaerentes Iesum.
25 When they found him on the other side, they said to him, 'Rabbi, when did you come here?'	25 Et cum invenissent eum trans mare,dixerunt ei: “ Rabbi, quando huc venisti? ”.
26 Jesus answered: In al truth I tel you, you are looking for me not because you have seen the signs butbecause you had al the bread you wanted to eat.	26 Respondit eis Iesus et dixit: “ Amen, amen dico vobis: Quaeritis me, nonquia vidistis signa, sed quia manducastis ex panibus et saturati estis.
27 Do not work for food that goes bad, but work for food that endures for eternal life, which the Son ofman wil give you, for on him the Father, God himself, has set his seal.	27 Operamini non cibum, qui perit, sed cibum, qui permanet in vitam aeternam, quemFilius hominis vobis dabit; hunc enim Pater signavit Deus! ”.
28 Then they said to him, 'What must we do if we are to carry out God's work?'	28 Dixerunt ergoad eum: “ Quid faciemus, ut operemur opera Dei? ”.
29 Jesus gave them this answer, 'This is carrying out God's work: you must believe in the one he hassent.'	29 Respondit Iesus etdixit eis: “ Hoc est opus Dei, ut credatis in eum, quem misit ille ”.
30 So they said, 'What sign wil you yourself do, the sight of which wil make us believe in you? What workwil you do?	30 Dixerunt ergo ei: “ Quod ergo tu facis signum, ut videamus et credamustibi? Quid operaris?
31 Our fathers ate manna in the desert; as scripture says: He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'	31 Patres nostri manna manducaverunt in deserto, sicutscriptum est: “Panem de caelo dedit eis manducare” ”.
32 Jesus answered them: In al truth I tel you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, itis my Father who gives you the bread from heaven, the true bread;	32 Dixit ergo eisIesus: “ Amen, amen dico vobis: Non Moyses dedit vobis panem de caelo, sedPater meus dat vobis panem de caelo verum;
33 for the bread of God is the bread which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.	33 panis enim Dei est, qui descenditde caelo et dat vitam mundo ”.
34 'Sir,' they said, 'give us that bread always.'	34 Dixerunt ergo ad eum: “ Domine, semper danobis panem hunc ”.
35 Jesus answered them: I am the bread of life. No one who comes to me wil ever hunger; no one whobelieves in me wil ever thirst.	35 Dixit eis Iesus: “ Ego sum panis vitae. Qui venit adme, non esuriet; et, qui credit in me, non sitiet umquam.
36 But, as I have told you, you can see me and stil you do not believe.	36 Sed dixi vobis,quia et vidistis me et non creditis.
37 Everyone whom the Father gives me will come to me; I will certainly not reject anyone who comes tome,	37 Omne, quod dat mihi Pater, ad me veniet;et eum, qui venit ad me, non eiciam foras,
38 because I have come from heaven, not to do my own wil , but to do the wil of him who sent me.	38 quia descendi de caelo, non utfaciam voluntatem meam sed voluntatem eius, qui misit me.
39 Now the wil of him who sent me is that I should lose nothing of al that he has given to me, but that Ishould raise it up on the last day.	39 Haec est autemvoluntas eius, qui misit me, ut omne, quod dedit mihi, non perdam ex eo, sedresuscitem illud in novissimo die.
40 It is my Father's wil that whoever sees the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and that Ishould raise that person up on the last day.	40 Haec est enim voluntas Patris mei, utomnis, qui videt Filium et credit in eum, habeat vitam aeternam; et resuscitaboego eum in novissimo die ”.
41 Meanwhile the Jews were complaining to each other about him, because he had said, 'I am the breadthat has come down from heaven.'	41 Murmurabant ergo Iudaei de illo, quia dixisset: “ Ego sum panis, qui decaelo descendi ”,
42 They were saying, 'Surely this is Jesus son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know. How can henow say, "I have come down from heaven?" '	42 et dicebant: “ Nonne hic est Iesus filius Ioseph, cuiusnos novimus patrem et matrem? Quomodo dicit nunc: “De caelo descendi”? ”.
43 Jesus said in reply to them, 'Stop complaining to each other.	43 Respondit Iesus et dixit eis: “ Nolite murmurare in invicem.
44 'No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me, and I wil raise that person up onthe last day.	44 Nemo potestvenire ad me, nisi Pater, qui misit me, traxerit eum; et ego resuscitabo eum innovissimo die.
45 It is written in the prophets: They wil al be taught by God; everyone who has listened to the Father,and learnt from him, comes to me.	45 Est scriptum in Prophetis: “Et erunt omnes docibiles Dei “.Omnis, qui audivit a Patre et didicit, venit ad me.
46 Not that anybody has seen the Father, except him who has his being from God: he has seen theFather.	46 Non quia Patrem viditquisquam, nisi is qui est a Deo, hic vidit Patrem.
47 In al truth I tel you, everyone who believes has eternal life.	47 Amen, amen dico vobis: Quicredit, habet vitam aeternam.
48 I am the bread of life.	48 Ego sum panis vitae.
49 Your fathers ate manna in the desert and they are dead;	49 Patres vestri manducaverunt in deserto manna etmortui sunt.
50 but this is the bread which comes down from heaven, so that a person may eat it and not die.	50 Hic est panis de caelo descendens, ut, si quis ex ipsomanducaverit, non moriatur.
51 I am the living bread which has come down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live for ever;and the bread that I shal give is my flesh, for the life of the world.'	51 Ego sum panis vivus, qui de caelo descendi. Siquis manducaverit ex hoc pane, vivet in aeternum; panis autem, quem ego dabo,caro mea est pro mundi vita ”.
52 Then the Jews started arguing among themselves, 'How can this man give us his flesh to eat?'	52 Litigabant ergo Iudaei ad invicem dicentes: “ Quomodo potest hic nobiscarnem suam dare ad manducandum? ”.
53 Jesus replied to them: In al truth I tell you, if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink hisblood, you have no life in you.	53 Dixit ergo eis Iesus: “ Amen, amendico vobis: Nisi manducaveritis carnem Filii hominis et biberitis eiussanguinem, non habetis vitam in vobismetipsis.
54 Anyone who does eat my flesh and drink my blood has eternal life, and I shal raise that person up onthe last day.	54 Qui manducat meam carnem etbibit meum sanguinem, habet vitam aeternam; et ego resuscitabo eum in novissimodie.
55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.	55 Caro enim mea verus est cibus, et sanguis meus verus est potus.
56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me and I live in that person.	56 Quimanducat meam carnem et bibit meum sanguinem, in me manet, et ego in illo.
57 As the living Father sent me and I draw life from the Father, so whoever eats me wil also draw lifefrom me.	57 Sicut misit me vivens Pater, et ego vivo propter Patrem; et, qui manducat me, etipse vivet propter me.
58 This is the bread which has come down from heaven; it is not like the bread our ancestors ate: theyare dead, but anyone who eats this bread wil live for ever.	58 Hic est panis, qui de caelo descendit, non sicutmanducaverunt patres et mortui sunt; qui manducat hunc panem, vivet in aeternum”.
59 This is what he taught at Capernaum in the synagogue.	59 Haec dixit in synagoga docens in Capharnaum.
60 After hearing it, many of his fol owers said, 'This is intolerable language. How could anyone accept it?'	60 Multi ergo audientes exdiscipulis eius dixerunt: “ Durus est hic sermo! Quis potest eum audire? ”.
61 Jesus was aware that his fol owers were complaining about it and said, 'Does this disturb you?	61 Sciens autem Iesus apud semetipsum quia murmurarent de hoc discipuli eius,dixit eis: “ Hoc vos scandalizat?
62 What if you should see the Son of man ascend to where he was before?	62 Si ergo videritis Filium hominisascendentem, ubi erat prius?
63 'It is the spirit that gives life, the flesh has nothing to offer. The words I have spoken to you are spiritand they are life.	63 Spiritus est, qui vivificat, caro non prodestquidquam; verba, quae ego locutus sum vobis, Spiritus sunt et vita sunt.
64 'But there are some of you who do not believe.' For Jesus knew from the outset who did not believeand who was to betray him.	64 Sedsunt quidam ex vobis, qui non credunt ”. Sciebat enim ab initio Iesus, quiessent non credentes, et quis traditurus esset eum.
65 He went on, 'This is why I told you that no one could come to me except by the gift of the Father.'	65 Et dicebat: “ Proptereadixi vobis: Nemo potest venire ad me, nisi fuerit ei datum a Patre ”.
66 After this, many of his disciples went away and accompanied him no more.	66 Ex hoc multi discipulorum eius abierunt retro et iam non cum illo ambulabant.
67 Then Jesus said to the Twelve, 'What about you, do you want to go away too?'	67 Dixit ergo Iesus ad Duodecim: “ Numquid et vos vultis abire? ”.
68 Simon Peter answered, 'Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the message of eternal life,	68 Respondit ei Simon Petrus: “ Domine, ad quem ibimus? Verba vitae aeternaehabes;
69 and we believe; we have come to know that you are the Holy One of God.'	69 et nos credidimus et cognovimus quia tu es Sanctus Dei ”.
70 Jesus replied to them, 'Did I not choose the Twelve of you? Yet one of you is a devil.'	70 Respondit eis Iesus: “ Nonne ego vos Duodecim elegi? Et ex vobis unus Diabolusest ”.
71 He meant Judas son of Simon Iscariot, since this was the man, one of the Twelve, who was to betrayhim.	71 Dicebat autem Iudam Simonis Iscariotis; hic enim erat tradituruseum, cum esset unus ex Duodecim.
