NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
After this, Jesus crossed the Sea of Galilee -- or of Tiberias-1 Post hæc abiit Jesus trans mare Galilææ, quod est Tiberiadis :
and a large crowd followed him, impressed by the signs he had done in curing the sick.2 et sequebatur eum multitudo magna, quia videbant signa quæ faciebat super his qui infirmabantur.
Jesus climbed the hillside and sat down there with his disciples.3 Subiit ergo in montem Jesus et ibi sedebat cum discipulis suis.
The time of the Jewish Passover was near.4 Erat autem proximum Pascha dies festus Judæorum.
Looking up, Jesus saw the crowds approaching and said to Philip, 'Where can we buy some bread forthese people to eat?'5 Cum sublevasset ergo oculos Jesus, et vidisset quia multitudo maxima venit ad eum, dixit ad Philippum : Unde ememus panes, ut manducent hi ?
He said this only to put Philip to the test; he himself knew exactly what he was going to do.6 Hoc autem dicebat tentans eum : ipse enim sciebat quid esset facturus.
Philip answered, 'Two hundred denari would not buy enough to give them a little piece each.'7 Respondit ei Philippus : Ducentorum denariorum panes non sufficiunt eis, ut unusquisque modicum quid accipiat.
One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said,8 Dicit ei unus ex discipulis ejus, Andreas, frater Simonis Petri :
'Here is a small boy with five barley loaves and two fish; but what is that among so many?'9 Est puer unus hic qui habet quinque panes hordeaceos et duos pisces : sed hæc quid sunt inter tantos ?
Jesus said to them, 'Make the people sit down.' There was plenty of grass there, and as many as fivethousand men sat down.10 Dixit ergo Jesus : Facite homines discumbere. Erat autem fœnum multum in loco. Discubuerunt ergo viri, numero quasi quinque millia.
Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were sitting there; he thendid the same with the fish, distributing as much as they wanted.11 Accepit ergo Jesus panes : et cum gratias egisset, distribuit discumbentibus : similiter et ex piscibus quantum volebant.
When they had eaten enough he said to the disciples, 'Pick up the pieces left over, so that nothing iswasted.'12 Ut autem impleti sunt, dixit discipulis suis : Colligite quæ superaverunt fragmenta, ne pereant.
So they picked them up and fil ed twelve large baskets with scraps left over from the meal of fivebarley loaves.13 Collegerunt ergo, et impleverunt duodecim cophinos fragmentorum ex quinque panibus hordeaceis, quæ superfuerunt his qui manducaverant.
Seeing the sign that he had done, the people said, 'This is indeed the prophet who is to come into theworld.'14 Illi ergo homines cum vidissent quod Jesus fecerat signum, dicebant : Quia hic est vere propheta, qui venturus est in mundum.
Jesus, as he realised they were about to come and take him by force and make him king, fled back tothe hil s alone.15 Jesus ergo cum cognovisset quia venturi essent ut raperent eum, et facerent eum regem, fugit iterum in montem ipse solus.
That evening the disciples went down to the shore of the sea16 Ut autem sero factum est, descenderunt discipuli ejus ad mare.
and got into a boat to make for Capernaum on the other side of the sea. It was getting dark by nowand Jesus had stil not rejoined them.17 Et cum ascendissent navim, venerunt trans mare in Capharnaum : et tenebræ jam factæ erant et non venerat ad eos Jesus.
The wind was strong, and the sea was getting rough.18 Mare autem, vento magno flante, exsurgebat.
They had rowed three or four miles when they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming towards theboat. They were afraid,19 Cum remigassent ergo quasi stadia viginti quinque aut triginta, vident Jesum ambulantem supra mare, et proximum navi fieri, et timuerunt.
but he said, 'It's me. Don't be afraid.'20 Ille autem dicit eis : Ego sum, nolite timere.
They were ready to take him into the boat, and immediately it reached the shore at the place they weremaking for.21 Voluerunt ergo accipere eum in navim et statim navis fuit ad terram, in quam ibant.
Next day, the crowd that had stayed on the other side saw that only one boat had been there, and thatJesus had not got into the boat with his disciples, but that the disciples had set off by themselves.22 Altera die, turba, quæ stabat trans mare, vidit quia navicula alia non erat ibi nisi una, et quia non introisset cum discipulis suis Jesus in navim, sed soli discipuli ejus abiissent :
Other boats, however, had put in from Tiberias, near the place where the bread had been eaten.23 aliæ vero supervenerunt naves a Tiberiade juxta locum ubi manducaverant panem, gratias agente Domino.
When the people saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into those boats andcrossed to Capernaum to look for Jesus.24 Cum ergo vidisset turba quia Jesus non esset ibi, neque discipuli ejus, ascenderunt in naviculas, et venerunt Capharnaum quærentes Jesum.
When they found him on the other side, they said to him, 'Rabbi, when did you come here?'25 Et cum invenissent eum trans mare, dixerunt ei : Rabbi, quando huc venisti ?
Jesus answered: In al truth I tel you, you are looking for me not because you have seen the signs butbecause you had al the bread you wanted to eat.26 Respondit eis Jesus, et dixit : Amen, amen dico vobis : quæritis me non quia vidistis signa, sed quia manducastis ex panibus et saturati estis.
Do not work for food that goes bad, but work for food that endures for eternal life, which the Son ofman wil give you, for on him the Father, God himself, has set his seal.27 Operamini non cibum, qui perit, sed qui permanet in vitam æternam, quem Filius hominis dabit vobis. Hunc enim Pater signavit Deus.
Then they said to him, 'What must we do if we are to carry out God's work?'28 Dixerunt ergo ad eum : Quid faciemus ut operemur opera Dei ?
Jesus gave them this answer, 'This is carrying out God's work: you must believe in the one he hassent.'29 Respondit Jesus, et dixit eis : Hoc est opus Dei, ut credatis in eum quem misit ille.
So they said, 'What sign wil you yourself do, the sight of which wil make us believe in you? What workwil you do?30 Dixerunt ergo ei : Quod ergo tu facis signum ut videamus et credamus tibi ? quid operaris ?
Our fathers ate manna in the desert; as scripture says: He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'31 Patres nostri manducaverunt manna in deserto, sicut scriptum est : Panem de cælo dedit eis manducare.
Jesus answered them: In al truth I tel you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, itis my Father who gives you the bread from heaven, the true bread;32 Dixit ergo eis Jesus : Amen, amen dico vobis : non Moyses dedit vobis panem de cælo, sed Pater meus dat vobis panem de cælo verum.
for the bread of God is the bread which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.33 Panis enim Dei est, qui de cælo descendit, et dat vitam mundo.
'Sir,' they said, 'give us that bread always.'34 Dixerunt ergo ad eum : Domine, semper da nobis panem hunc.
Jesus answered them: I am the bread of life. No one who comes to me wil ever hunger; no one whobelieves in me wil ever thirst.35 Dixit autem eis Jesus : Ego sum panis vitæ : qui venit ad me, non esuriet, et qui credit in me, non sitiet umquam.
But, as I have told you, you can see me and stil you do not believe.36 Sed dixi vobis quia et vidistis me, et non creditis.
Everyone whom the Father gives me will come to me; I will certainly not reject anyone who comes tome,37 Omne quod dat mihi Pater, ad me veniet : et eum qui venit ad me, non ejiciam foras :
because I have come from heaven, not to do my own wil , but to do the wil of him who sent me.38 quia descendi de cælo, non ut faciam voluntatem meam, sed voluntatem ejus qui misit me.
Now the wil of him who sent me is that I should lose nothing of al that he has given to me, but that Ishould raise it up on the last day.39 Hæc est autem voluntas ejus qui misit me, Patris : ut omne quod dedit mihi, non perdam ex eo, sed resuscitem illud in novissimo die.
It is my Father's wil that whoever sees the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and that Ishould raise that person up on the last day.40 Hæc est autem voluntas Patris mei, qui misit me : ut omnis qui videt Filium et credit in eum, habeat vitam æternam, et ego resuscitabo eum in novissimo die.
Meanwhile the Jews were complaining to each other about him, because he had said, 'I am the breadthat has come down from heaven.'41 Murmurabant ergo Judæi de illo, quia dixisset : Ego sum panis vivus, qui de cælo descendi,
They were saying, 'Surely this is Jesus son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know. How can henow say, "I have come down from heaven?" '42 et dicebant : Nonne hic est Jesus filius Joseph, cujus nos novimus patrem et matrem ? quomodo ergo dicit hic : Quia de cælo descendi ?
Jesus said in reply to them, 'Stop complaining to each other.43 Respondit ergo Jesus, et dixit eis : Nolite murmurare in invicem :
'No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me, and I wil raise that person up onthe last day.44 nemo potest venire ad me, nisi Pater, qui misit me, traxerit eum ; et ego resuscitabo eum in novissimo die.
It is written in the prophets: They wil al be taught by God; everyone who has listened to the Father, and learnt from him, comes to me.45 Est scriptum in prophetis : Et erunt omnes docibiles Dei. Omnis qui audivit a Patre, et didicit, venit ad me.
Not that anybody has seen the Father, except him who has his being from God: he has seen theFather.46 Non quia Patrem vidit quisquam, nisi is, qui est a Deo, hic vidit Patrem.
In al truth I tel you, everyone who believes has eternal life.47 Amen, amen dico vobis : qui credit in me, habet vitam æternam.
I am the bread of life.48 Ego sum panis vitæ.
Your fathers ate manna in the desert and they are dead;49 Patres vestri manducaverunt manna in deserto, et mortui sunt.
but this is the bread which comes down from heaven, so that a person may eat it and not die.50 Hic est panis de cælo descendens : ut si quis ex ipso manducaverit, non moriatur.
I am the living bread which has come down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live for ever;and the bread that I shal give is my flesh, for the life of the world.'51 Ego sum panis vivus, qui de cælo descendi.
Then the Jews started arguing among themselves, 'How can this man give us his flesh to eat?'52 Si quis manducaverit ex hoc pane, vivet in æternum : et panis quem ego dabo, caro mea est pro mundi vita.
Jesus replied to them: In al truth I tell you, if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink hisblood, you have no life in you.53 Litigabant ergo Judæi ad invicem, dicentes : Quomodo potest hic nobis carnem suam dare ad manducandum ?
Anyone who does eat my flesh and drink my blood has eternal life, and I shal raise that person up onthe last day.54 Dixit ergo eis Jesus : Amen, amen dico vobis : nisi manducaveritis carnem Filii hominis, et biberitis ejus sanguinem, non habebitis vitam in vobis.
For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.55 Qui manducat meam carnem, et bibit meum sanguinem, habet vitam æternam : et ego resuscitabo eum in novissimo die.
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me and I live in that person.56 Caro enim mea vere est cibus : et sanguis meus, vere est potus ;
As the living Father sent me and I draw life from the Father, so whoever eats me wil also draw lifefrom me.57 qui manducat meam carnem et bibit meum sanguinem, in me manet, et ego in illo.
This is the bread which has come down from heaven; it is not like the bread our ancestors ate: theyare dead, but anyone who eats this bread wil live for ever.58 Sicut misit me vivens Pater, et ego vivo propter Patrem : et qui manducat me, et ipse vivet propter me.
This is what he taught at Capernaum in the synagogue.59 Hic est panis qui de cælo descendit. Non sicut manducaverunt patres vestri manna, et mortui sunt. Qui manducat hunc panem, vivet in æternum.
After hearing it, many of his fol owers said, 'This is intolerable language. How could anyone accept it?'60 Hæc dixit in synagoga docens, in Capharnaum.
Jesus was aware that his fol owers were complaining about it and said, 'Does this disturb you?61 Multi ergo audientes ex discipulis ejus, dixerunt : Durus est hic sermo, et quis potest eum audire ?
What if you should see the Son of man ascend to where he was before?62 Sciens autem Jesus apud semetipsum quia murmurarent de hoc discipuli ejus, dixit eis : Hoc vos scandalizat ?
'It is the spirit that gives life, the flesh has nothing to offer. The words I have spoken to you are spiritand they are life.63 si ergo videritis Filium hominis ascendentem ubi erat prius ?
'But there are some of you who do not believe.' For Jesus knew from the outset who did not believeand who was to betray him.64 Spiritus est qui vivificat : caro non prodest quidquam : verba quæ ego locutus sum vobis, spiritus et vita sunt.
He went on, 'This is why I told you that no one could come to me except by the gift of the Father.'65 Sed sunt quidam ex vobis qui non credunt. Sciebat enim ab initio Jesus qui essent non credentes, et quis traditurus esset eum.
After this, many of his disciples went away and accompanied him no more.66 Et dicebat : Propterea dixi vobis, quia nemo potest venire ad me, nisi fuerit ei datum a Patre meo.
Then Jesus said to the Twelve, 'What about you, do you want to go away too?'67 Ex hoc multi discipulorum ejus abierunt retro : et jam non cum illo ambulabant.
Simon Peter answered, 'Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the message of eternal life,68 Dixit ergo Jesus ad duodecim : Numquid et vos vultis abire ?
and we believe; we have come to know that you are the Holy One of God.'69 Respondit ergo ei Simon Petrus : Domine, ad quem ibimus ? verba vitæ æternæ habes :
Jesus replied to them, 'Did I not choose the Twelve of you? Yet one of you is a devil.'70 et nos credidimus, et cognovimus quia tu es Christus Filius Dei.
He meant Judas son of Simon Iscariot, since this was the man, one of the Twelve, who was to betrayhim.71 Respondit eis Jesus : Nonne ego vos duodecim elegi : et ex vobis unus diabolus est ?
Dicebat autem Judam Simonis Iscariotem : hic enim erat traditurus eum, cum esset unus ex duodecim.
