1 'In al truth I tel you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold through the gate, but climbs in someother way, is a thief and a bandit.1 “ Amen, amen dico vobis: Qui non intrat per ostium in ovile ovium, sedascendit aliunde, ille fur est et latro;
2 He who enters through the gate is the shepherd of the flock;2 qui autem intrat per ostium, pastorest ovium.
3 the gatekeeper lets him in, the sheep hear his voice, one by one he calls his own sheep and leadsthem out.3 Huic ostiarius aperit, et oves vocem eius audiunt, et proprias ovesvocat nominatim et educit eas.
4 When he has brought out al those that are his, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep fol ow becausethey know his voice.4 Cum proprias omnes emiserit, ante eas vadit, etoves illum sequuntur, quia sciunt vocem eius;
5 They wil never fol ow a stranger, but wil run away from him because they do not recognise the voiceof strangers.'5 alienum autem non sequentur, sedfugient ab eo, quia non noverunt vocem alienorum ”.
6 Jesus told them this parable but they failed to understand what he was saying to them.6 Hoc proverbium dixit eisIesus; illi autem non cognoverunt quid esset, quod loquebatur eis.
7 So Jesus spoke to them again: In all truth I tell you, I am the gate of the sheepfold.7 Dixit ergo iterum Iesus: “ Amen, amen dico vobis: Ego sum ostium ovium.
8 Al who have come before me are thieves and bandits, but the sheep took no notice of them.8 Omnes, quotquot venerunt ante me, fures sunt et latrones, sed non audierunt eosoves.
9 I am the gate. Anyone who enters through me will be safe: such a one will go in and out and wil findpasture.9 Ego sum ostium; per me, si quis introierit, salvabitur et ingredietur etegredietur et pascua inveniet.
10 The thief comes only to steal and kil and destroy. I have come so that they may have life and have itto the full.10 Fur non venit, nisi ut furetur et mactet etperdat; ego veni, ut vitam habeant et abundantius habeant.
11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep.11 Ego sum pastorbonus; bonus pastor animam suam ponit pro ovibus;
12 The hired man, since he is not the shepherd and the sheep do not belong to him, abandons thesheep as soon as he sees a wolf coming, and runs away, and then the wolf attacks and scatters the sheep;12 mercennarius et, qui nonest pastor, cuius non sunt oves propriae, videt lupum venientem et dimittit oveset fugit — et lupus rapit eas et dispergit —
13 he runs away because he is only a hired man and has no concern for the sheep.13 quia mercennarius est et nonpertinet ad eum de ovibus.
14 I am the good shepherd; I know my own and my own know me,14 Ego sum pastor bonus et cognosco meas, etcognoscunt me meae,
15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for my sheep.15 sicut cognoscit me Pater, et ego cognosco Patrem; etanimam meam pono pro ovibus.
16 And there are other sheep I have that are not of this fold, and I must lead these too. They too willlisten to my voice, and there wil be only one flock, one shepherd.16 Et alias oves habeo, quae non sunt ex hoc ovili,et illas oportet me adducere, et vocem meam audient et fient unus grex, unuspastor.
17 The Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again.17 Propterea me Pater diligit, quia ego pono animam meam, ut iterumsumam eam.
18 No one takes it from me; I lay it down of my own free wil , and as I have power to lay it down, so Ihave power to take it up again; and this is the command I have received from my Father.18 Nemo tollit eam a me, sed ego pono eam a meipso. Potestatem habeoponendi eam et potestatem habeo iterum sumendi eam. Hoc mandatum accepi a Patremeo ”.
19 These words caused a fresh division among the Jews.19 Dissensio iterum facta est inter Iudaeos propter sermones hos.
20 Many said, 'He is possessed, he is raving; why do you listen to him?'20 Dicebantautem multi ex ipsis: “ Daemonium habet et insanit! Quid eum auditis? ”.
21 Others said, 'These are not the words of a man possessed by a devil: could a devil open the eyes ofthe blind?'21 Alii dicebant: “ Haec verba non sunt daemonium habentis! Numquid daemoniumpotest caecorum oculos aperire? ”.
22 It was the time of the feast of Dedication in Jerusalem. It was winter,22 Facta sunt tunc Encaenia in Hierosolymis. Hiems erat;
23 and Jesus was in the Temple walking up and down in the Portico of Solomon.23 et ambulabat Iesusin templo in porticu Salomonis.
24 The Jews gathered round him and said, 'How much longer are you going to keep us in suspense? Ifyou are the Christ, tel us openly.'24 Circumdederunt ergo eum Iudaei et dicebantei: “ Quousque animam nostram tollis? Si tu es Christus, dic nobis palam! ”.
25 Jesus replied: I have told you, but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father's name are mywitness;25 Respondit eis Iesus: “ Dixi vobis, et non creditis; opera, quae ego facioin nomine Patris mei, haec testimonium perhibent de me.
26 but you do not believe, because you are no sheep of mine.26 Sed vos non creditis,quia non estis ex ovibus meis.
27 The sheep that belong to me listen to my voice; I know them and they follow me.27 Oves meae vocem meam audiunt, et ego cognoscoeas, et sequuntur me;
28 I give them eternal life; they will never be lost and no one wil ever steal them from my hand.28 et ego vitam aeternam do eis, et non peribunt inaeternum, et non rapiet eas quisquam de manu mea.
29 The Father, for what he has given me, is greater than anyone, and no one can steal anything fromthe Father's hand.29 Pater meus quod dedit mihi,maius omnibus est, et nemo potest rapere de manu Patris.
30 The Father and I are one.30 Ego et Pater unumsumus ”.
31 The Jews fetched stones to stone him,31 Sustulerunt iterum lapides Iudaei, ut lapidarent eum.
32 so Jesus said to them, 'I have shown you many good works from my Father; for which of these areyou stoning me?'32 Respondit eis Iesus:“ Multa opera bona ostendi vobis ex Patre; propter quod eorum opus melapidatis? ”.
33 The Jews answered him, 'We are stoning you, not for doing a good work, but for blasphemy; thoughyou are only a man, you claim to be God.'33 Responderunt ei Iudaei: “ De bono opere non lapidamus tesed de blasphemia, et quia tu, homo cum sis, facis teipsum Deum ”.
34 Jesus answered: Is it not written in your Law: I said, you are gods?34 Respondit eis Iesus: “ Nonne scriptum est in lege vestra: “Ego dixi: Diiestis?”.
35 So it uses the word 'gods' of those people to whom the word of God was addressed -- and scripturecannot be set aside.35 Si illos dixit deos, ad quos sermo Dei factus est, et non potestsolvi Scriptura,
36 Yet to someone whom the Father has consecrated and sent into the world you say, 'You areblaspheming' because I said, 'I am Son of God.'36 quem Pater sanctificavit et misit in mundum, vos dicitis:“Blasphemas!”, quia dixi: Filius Dei sum?
37 If I am not doing my Father's work, there is no need to believe me;37 Si non facio opera Patris mei,nolite credere mihi;
38 but if I am doing it, then even if you refuse to believe in me, at least believe in the work I do; then youwil know for certain that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.38 si autem facio, et si mihi non vultis credere, operibuscredite, ut cognoscatis et sciatis quia in me est Pater, et ego in Patre ”.
39 They again wanted to arrest him then, but he eluded their clutches.39 Quaerebant ergo iterum eum prehendere; et exivit de manibus eorum.
40 He went back again to the far side of the Jordan to the district where John had been baptising at firstand he stayed there.40 Et abiit iterum trans Iordanem in eum locum, ubi erat Ioannes baptizansprimum, et mansit illic.
41 Many people who came to him said, 'John gave no signs, but all he said about this man was true';41 Et multi venerunt ad eum et dicebant: “ Ioannesquidem signum fecit nullum; omnia autem, quaecumque dixit Ioannes de hoc, veraerant ”.
42 and many of them believed in him.42 Et multi crediderunt in eum illic.
