NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
The feast of Unleavened Bread, cal ed the Passover, was now drawing near,1 Appropinquabat autem dies festus azymorum, qui dicitur Pascha :
and the chief priests and the scribes were looking for some way of doing away with him, because theywere afraid of the people.2 et quærebant principes sacerdotum, et scribæ, quomodo Jesum interficerent : timebant vero plebem.
Then Satan entered into Judas, surnamed Iscariot, who was one of the Twelve.3 Intravit autem Satanas in Judam, qui cognominabatur Iscariotes, unum de duodecim :
He approached the chief priests and the officers of the guard to discuss some way of handing Jesusover to them.4 et abiit, et locutus est cum principibus sacerdotum, et magistratibus, quemadmodum illum traderet eis.
They were delighted and agreed to give him money.5 Et gavisi sunt, et pacti sunt pecuniam illi dare.
He accepted and began to look for an opportunity to betray him to them without people knowing aboutit.6 Et spopondit, et quærebat opportunitatem ut traderet illum sine turbis.
The day of Unleavened Bread came round, on which the Passover had to be sacrificed,7 Venit autem dies azymorum, in qua necesse erat occidi pascha.
and he sent Peter and John, saying, 'Go and make the preparations for us to eat the Passover.'8 Et misit Petrum et Joannem, dicens : Euntes parate nobis pascha, ut manducemus.
They asked him, 'Where do you want us to prepare it?'9 At illi dixerunt : Ubi vis paremus ?
He said to them, 'Look, as you go into the city you wil meet a man carrying a pitcher of water. Fol owhim into the house he enters10 Et dixit ad eos : Ecce introëuntibus vobis in civitatem occurret vobis homo quidam amphoram aquæ portans : sequimini eum in domum, in quam intrat,
and tel the owner of the house, "The Master says this to you: Where is the room for me to eat thePassover with my disciples?"11 et dicetis patrifamilias domus : Dicit tibi Magister : Ubi est diversorium, ubi pascha cum discipulis meis manducem ?
The man wil show you a large upper room furnished with couches. Make the preparations there.'12 Et ipse ostendet vobis cœnaculum magnum stratum, et ibi parate.
They set off and found everything as he had told them and prepared the Passover.13 Euntes autem invenerunt sicut dixit illis, et paraverunt pascha.
When the time came he took his place at table, and the apostles with him.14 Et cum facta esset hora, discubuit, et duodecim apostoli cum eo.
And he said to them, 'I have ardently longed to eat this Passover with you before I suffer;15 Et ait illis : Desiderio desideravi hoc pascha manducare vobiscum, antequam patiar.
because, I tel you, I shal not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.'16 Dico enim vobis, quia ex hoc non manducabo illud, donec impleatur in regno Dei.
Then, taking a cup, he gave thanks and said, 'Take this and share it among you,17 Et accepto calice gratias egit, et dixit : Accipite, et dividite inter vos.
because from now on, I tel you, I shall never again drink wine until the kingdom of God comes.'18 Dico enim vobis quod non bibam de generatione vitis donec regnum Dei veniat.
Then he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, 'This ismy body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.'19 Et accepto pane gratias egit, et fregit, et dedit eis, dicens : Hoc est corpus meum, quod pro vobis datur : hoc facite in meam commemorationem.
He did the same with the cup after supper, and said, 'This cup is the new covenant in my bloodpoured out for you.20 Similiter et calicem, postquam cœnavit, dicens : Hic est calix novum testamentum in sanguine meo, qui pro vobis fundetur.
'But look, here with me on the table is the hand of the man who is betraying me.21 Verumtamen ecce manus tradentis me, mecum est in mensa.
The Son of man is indeed on the path which was decreed, but alas for that man by whom he isbetrayed!'22 Et quidem Filius hominis, secundum quod definitum est, vadit : verumtamen væ homini illi per quem tradetur.
And they began to ask one another which of them it could be who was to do this.23 Et ipsi cœperunt quærere inter se quis esset ex eis qui hoc facturus esset.
An argument also began between them about who should be reckoned the greatest;24 Facta est autem et contentio inter eos, quis eorum videretur esse major.
but he said to them, 'Among the gentiles it is the kings who lord it over them, and those who haveauthority over them are given the title Benefactor.25 Dixit autem eis : Reges gentium dominantur eorum : et qui potestatem habent super eos, benefici vocantur.
With you this must not happen. No; the greatest among you must behave as if he were the youngest, the leader as if he were the one who serves.26 Vos autem non sic : sed qui major est in vobis, fiat sicut minor : et qui præcessor est, sicut ministrator.
For who is the greater: the one at table or the one who serves? The one at table, surely? Yet here amI among you as one who serves!27 Nam quis major est, qui recumbit, an qui ministrat ? nonne qui recumbit ? Ego autem in medio vestrum sum, sicut qui ministrat :
'You are the men who have stood by me faithful y in my trials;28 vos autem estis, qui permansistis mecum in tentationibus meis.
and now I confer a kingdom on you, just as my Father conferred one on me:29 Et ego dispono vobis sicut disposuit mihi Pater meus regnum,
you wil eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and you wil sit on thrones to judge the twelve tribesof Israel.30 ut edatis et bibatis super mensam meam in regno meo, et sedeatis super thronos judicantes duodecim tribus Israël.
'Simon, Simon! Look, Satan has got his wish to sift you al like wheat;31 Ait autem Dominus : Simon, Simon, ecce Satanas expetivit vos ut cribraret sicut triticum :
but I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail, and once you have recovered, you inyour turn must strengthen your brothers.'32 ego autem rogavi pro te ut non deficiat fides tua : et tu aliquando conversus, confirma fratres tuos.
'Lord,' he answered, 'I would be ready to go to prison with you, and to death.'33 Qui dixit ei : Domine, tecum paratus sum et in carcerem et in mortem ire.
Jesus replied, 'I tell you, Peter, by the time the cock crows today you wil have denied three times thatyou know me.'34 At ille dixit : Dico tibi, Petre, non cantabit hodie gallus, donec ter abneges nosse me. Et dixit eis :
He said to them, 'When I sent you out without purse or haversack or sandals, were you short ofanything?'35 Quando misi vos sine sacculo, et pera, et calceamentis, numquid aliquid defuit vobis ?
'No, nothing,' they said. He said to them, 'But now if you have a purse, take it, and the same with ahaversack; if you have no sword, sell your cloak and buy one,36 At illi dixerunt : Nihil. Dixit ergo eis : Sed nunc qui habet sacculum, tollat ; similiter et peram : et qui non habet, vendat tunicam suam et emat gladium.
because I tell you these words of scripture are destined to be fulfil ed in me: He was counted as oneof the rebel ious. Yes, what it says about me is even now reaching its fulfilment.'37 Dico enim vobis, quoniam adhuc hoc quod scriptum est, oportet impleri in me : Et cum iniquis deputatus est. Etenim ea quæ sunt de me finem habent.
They said, 'Lord, here are two swords.' He said to them, 'That is enough!'38 At illi dixerunt : Domine, ecce duo gladii hic. At ille dixit eis : Satis est.
He then left to make his way as usual to the Mount of Olives, with the disciples fol owing.39 Et egressus ibat secundum consuetudinem in monte Olivarum. Secuti sunt autem illum et discipuli.
When he reached the place he said to them, 'Pray not to be put to the test.'40 Et cum pervenisset ad locum, dixit illis : Orate ne intretis in tentationem.
Then he withdrew from them, about a stone's throw away, and knelt down and prayed.41 Et ipse avulsus est ab eis quantum jactus est lapidis : et positis genibus orabat,
'Father,' he said, 'if you are wil ing, take this cup away from me. Nevertheless, let your will be done, not mine.'42 dicens : Pater, si vis, transfer calicem istum a me : verumtamen non mea voluntas, sed tua fiat.
Then an angel appeared to him, coming from heaven to give him strength.43 Apparuit autem illi angelus de cælo, confortans eum. Et factus in agonia, prolixius orabat.
In his anguish he prayed even more earnestly, and his sweat fell to the ground like great drops ofblood.44 Et factus est sudor ejus sicut guttæ sanguinis decurrentis in terram.
When he rose from prayer he went to the disciples and found them sleeping for sheer grief.45 Et cum surrexisset ab oratione et venisset ad discipulos suos, invenit eos dormientes præ tristitia.
And he said to them, 'Why are you asleep? Get up and pray not to be put to the test.'46 Et ait illis : Quid dormitis ? surgite, orate, ne intretis in tentationem.
Suddenly, while he was still speaking, a number of men appeared, and at the head of them the mancal ed Judas, one of the Twelve, who went up to Jesus to kiss him.47 Adhuc eo loquente, ecce turba : et qui vocabatur Judas, unus de duodecim, antecedebat eos, et appropinquavit Jesu ut oscularetur eum.
Jesus said, 'Judas, are you betraying the Son of man with a kiss?'48 Jesus autem dixit illi : Juda, osculo Filium hominis tradis ?
His followers, seeing what was about to happen, said, 'Lord, shal we use our swords?'49 Videntes autem hi qui circa ipsum erant, quod futurum erat, dixerunt ei : Domine, si percutimus in gladio ?
And one of them struck the high priest's servant and cut off his right ear.50 Et percussit unus ex illis servum principis sacerdotum, et amputavit auriculam ejus dexteram.
But at this Jesus said, 'That is enough.' And touching the man's ear he healed him.51 Respondens autem Jesus, ait : Sinite usque huc. Et cum tetigisset auriculam ejus, sanavit eum.
Then Jesus said to the chief priests and captains of the Temple guard and elders who had come forhim, 'Am I a bandit, that you had to set out with swords and clubs?52 Dixit autem Jesus ad eos qui venerant ad se principes sacerdotum, et magistratus templi, et seniores : Quasi ad latronem existis cum gladiis et fustibus ?
When I was among you in the Temple day after day you never made a move to lay hands on me. Butthis is your hour; this is the reign of darkness.'53 Cum quotidie vobiscum fuerim in templo, non extendistis manus in me : sed hæc est hora vestra, et potestas tenebrarum.
They seized him then and led him away, and they took him to the high priest's house. Peter fol owedat a distance.54 Comprehendentes autem eum, duxerunt ad domum principis sacerdotum : Petrus vero sequebatur a longe.
They had lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and Peter sat down among them,55 Accenso autem igne in medio atrii et circumsedentibus illis, erat Petrus in medio eorum.
and as he was sitting there by the blaze a servant-girl saw him, peered at him, and said, 'This manwas with him too.'56 Quem cum vidisset ancilla quædam sedentem ad lumen, et eum fuisset intuita, dixit : Et hic cum illo erat.
But he denied it. 'Woman, I do not know him,' he said.57 At ille negavit eum, dicens : Mulier, non novi illum.
Shortly afterwards someone else saw him and said, 'You are one of them too.' But Peter replied, 'I amnot, my friend.'58 Et post pusillum alius videns eum, dixit : Et tu de illis es. Petrus vero ait : O homo, non sum.
About an hour later another man insisted, saying, 'This fel ow was certainly with him. Why, he is aGalilean.'59 Et intervallo facto quasi horæ unius, alius quidam affirmabat, dicens : Vere et hic cum illo erat : nam et Galilæus est.
Peter said, 'My friend, I do not know what you are talking about.' At that instant, while he was stilspeaking, the cock crowed,60 Et ait Petrus : Homo, nescio quid dicis. Et continuo, adhuc illo loquente, cantavit gallus.
and the Lord turned and looked straight at Peter, and Peter remembered the Lord's words when hehad said to him, 'Before the cock crows today, you will have disowned me three times.'61 Et conversus Dominus respexit Petrum, et recordatus est Petrus verbi Domini, sicut dixerat : Quia priusquam gallus cantet, ter me negabis.
And he went outside and wept bitterly.62 Et egressus foras Petrus flevit amare.
Meanwhile the men who guarded Jesus were mocking and beating him.63 Et viri qui tenebant illum, illudebant ei, cædentes.
They blindfolded him and questioned him, saying, 'Prophesy! Who hit you then?'64 Et velaverunt eum, et percutiebant faciem ejus : et interrogabant eum, dicentes : Prophetiza, quis est, qui te percussit ?
And they heaped many other insults on him.65 Et alia multa blasphemantes dicebant in eum.
When day broke there was a meeting of the elders of the people, the chief priests and scribes. Hewas brought before their council,66 Et ut factus est dies, convenerunt seniores plebis, et principes sacerdotum, et scribæ, et duxerunt illum in concilium suum, dicentes : Si tu es Christus, dic nobis.
and they said to him, 'If you are the Christ, tel us.' He replied, 'If I tel you, you wil not believe,67 Et ait illis : Si vobis dixero, non credetis mihi :
and if I question you, you will not answer.68 si autem et interrogavero, non respondebitis mihi, neque dimittetis.
But from now on, the Son of man wil be seated at the right hand of the Power of God.'69 Ex hoc autem erit Filius hominis sedens a dextris virtutis Dei.
They all said, 'So you are the Son of God then?' He answered, 'It is you who say I am.'70 Dixerunt autem omnes : Tu ergo es Filius Dei ? Qui ait : Vos dicitis, quia ego sum.
Then they said, 'Why do we need any evidence? We have heard it for ourselves from his own lips.'71 At illi dixerunt : Quid adhuc desideramus testimonium ? ipsi enim audivimus de ore ejus.
