NEW JERUSALEMNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
The feast of Unleavened Bread, cal ed the Passover, was now drawing near,1 Now the feast of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was drawing near,
and the chief priests and the scribes were looking for some way of doing away with him, because theywere afraid of the people.2 and the chief priests and the scribes were seeking a way to put him to death, for they were afraid of the people.
Then Satan entered into Judas, surnamed Iscariot, who was one of the Twelve.3 Then Satan entered into Judas, the one surnamed Iscariot, who was counted among the Twelve,
He approached the chief priests and the officers of the guard to discuss some way of handing Jesusover to them.4 and he went to the chief priests and temple guards to discuss a plan for handing him over to them.
They were delighted and agreed to give him money.5 They were pleased and agreed to pay him money.
He accepted and began to look for an opportunity to betray him to them without people knowing aboutit.6 He accepted their offer and sought a favorable opportunity to hand him over to them in the absence of a crowd.
The day of Unleavened Bread came round, on which the Passover had to be sacrificed,7 When the day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread arrived, the day for sacrificing the Passover lamb,
and he sent Peter and John, saying, 'Go and make the preparations for us to eat the Passover.'8 he sent out Peter and John, instructing them, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover."
They asked him, 'Where do you want us to prepare it?'9 They asked him, "Where do you want us to make the preparations?"
He said to them, 'Look, as you go into the city you wil meet a man carrying a pitcher of water. Fol owhim into the house he enters10 And he answered them, "When you go into the city, a man will meet you carrying a jar of water. Follow him into the house that he enters
and tel the owner of the house, "The Master says this to you: Where is the room for me to eat thePassover with my disciples?"11 and say to the master of the house, 'The teacher says to you, "Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?"'
The man wil show you a large upper room furnished with couches. Make the preparations there.'12 He will show you a large upper room that is furnished. Make the preparations there."
They set off and found everything as he had told them and prepared the Passover.13 Then they went off and found everything exactly as he had told them, and there they prepared the Passover.
When the time came he took his place at table, and the apostles with him.14 When the hour came, he took his place at table with the apostles.
And he said to them, 'I have ardently longed to eat this Passover with you before I suffer;15 He said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer,
because, I tel you, I shal not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.'16 for, I tell you, I shall not eat it (again) until there is fulfillment in the kingdom of God."
Then, taking a cup, he gave thanks and said, 'Take this and share it among you,17 Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and said, "Take this and share it among yourselves;
because from now on, I tel you, I shall never again drink wine until the kingdom of God comes.'18 for I tell you (that) from this time on I shall not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes."
Then he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, 'This ismy body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.'19 Then he took the bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body, which will be given for you; do this in memory of me."
He did the same with the cup after supper, and said, 'This cup is the new covenant in my bloodpoured out for you.20 And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which will be shed for you.
'But look, here with me on the table is the hand of the man who is betraying me.21 "And yet behold, the hand of the one who is to betray me is with me on the table;
The Son of man is indeed on the path which was decreed, but alas for that man by whom he isbetrayed!'22 for the Son of Man indeed goes as it has been determined; but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed."
And they began to ask one another which of them it could be who was to do this.23 And they began to debate among themselves who among them would do such a deed.
An argument also began between them about who should be reckoned the greatest;24 Then an argument broke out among them about which of them should be regarded as the greatest.
but he said to them, 'Among the gentiles it is the kings who lord it over them, and those who haveauthority over them are given the title Benefactor.25 He said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them and those in authority over them are addressed as 'Benefactors';
With you this must not happen. No; the greatest among you must behave as if he were the youngest,the leader as if he were the one who serves.26 but among you it shall not be so. Rather, let the greatest among you be as the youngest, and the leader as the servant.
For who is the greater: the one at table or the one who serves? The one at table, surely? Yet here amI among you as one who serves!27 For who is greater: the one seated at table or the one who serves? Is it not the one seated at table? I am among you as the one who serves.
'You are the men who have stood by me faithful y in my trials;28 It is you who have stood by me in my trials;
and now I confer a kingdom on you, just as my Father conferred one on me:29 and I confer a kingdom on you, just as my Father has conferred one on me,
you wil eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and you wil sit on thrones to judge the twelve tribesof Israel.30 that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom; and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
'Simon, Simon! Look, Satan has got his wish to sift you al like wheat;31 "Simon, Simon, behold Satan has demanded to sift all of you like wheat,
but I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail, and once you have recovered, you inyour turn must strengthen your brothers.'32 but I have prayed that your own faith may not fail; and once you have turned back, you must strengthen your brothers."
'Lord,' he answered, 'I would be ready to go to prison with you, and to death.'33 He said to him, "Lord, I am prepared to go to prison and to die with you."
Jesus replied, 'I tell you, Peter, by the time the cock crows today you wil have denied three times thatyou know me.'34 But he replied, "I tell you, Peter, before the cock crows this day, you will deny three times that you know me."
He said to them, 'When I sent you out without purse or haversack or sandals, were you short ofanything?'35 He said to them, "When I sent you forth without a money bag or a sack or sandals, were you in need of anything?" "No, nothing," they replied.
'No, nothing,' they said. He said to them, 'But now if you have a purse, take it, and the same with ahaversack; if you have no sword, sell your cloak and buy one,36 He said to them, "But now one who has a money bag should take it, and likewise a sack, and one who does not have a sword should sell his cloak and buy one.
because I tell you these words of scripture are destined to be fulfil ed in me: He was counted as oneof the rebel ious. Yes, what it says about me is even now reaching its fulfilment.'37 For I tell you that this scripture must be fulfilled in me, namely, 'He was counted among the wicked'; and indeed what is written about me is coming to fulfillment."
They said, 'Lord, here are two swords.' He said to them, 'That is enough!'38 Then they said, "Lord, look, there are two swords here." But he replied, "It is enough!"
He then left to make his way as usual to the Mount of Olives, with the disciples fol owing.39 Then going out he went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him.
When he reached the place he said to them, 'Pray not to be put to the test.'40 When he arrived at the place he said to them, "Pray that you may not undergo the test."
Then he withdrew from them, about a stone's throw away, and knelt down and prayed.41 After withdrawing about a stone's throw from them and kneeling, he prayed,
'Father,' he said, 'if you are wil ing, take this cup away from me. Nevertheless, let your will be done,not mine.'42 saying, "Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me; still, not my will but yours be done."
Then an angel appeared to him, coming from heaven to give him strength.43 (And to strengthen him an angel from heaven appeared to him.
In his anguish he prayed even more earnestly, and his sweat fell to the ground like great drops ofblood.44 He was in such agony and he prayed so fervently that his sweat became like drops of blood falling on the ground.)
When he rose from prayer he went to the disciples and found them sleeping for sheer grief.45 When he rose from prayer and returned to his disciples, he found them sleeping from grief.
And he said to them, 'Why are you asleep? Get up and pray not to be put to the test.'46 He said to them, "Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not undergo the test."
Suddenly, while he was still speaking, a number of men appeared, and at the head of them the mancal ed Judas, one of the Twelve, who went up to Jesus to kiss him.47 While he was still speaking, a crowd approached and in front was one of the Twelve, a man named Judas. He went up to Jesus to kiss him.
Jesus said, 'Judas, are you betraying the Son of man with a kiss?'48 Jesus said to him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?"
His followers, seeing what was about to happen, said, 'Lord, shal we use our swords?'49 His disciples realized what was about to happen, and they asked, "Lord, shall we strike with a sword?"
And one of them struck the high priest's servant and cut off his right ear.50 And one of them struck the high priest's servant and cut off his right ear.
But at this Jesus said, 'That is enough.' And touching the man's ear he healed him.51 But Jesus said in reply, "Stop, no more of this!" Then he touched the servant's ear and healed him.
Then Jesus said to the chief priests and captains of the Temple guard and elders who had come forhim, 'Am I a bandit, that you had to set out with swords and clubs?52 And Jesus said to the chief priests and temple guards and elders who had come for him, "Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs?
When I was among you in the Temple day after day you never made a move to lay hands on me. Butthis is your hour; this is the reign of darkness.'53 Day after day I was with you in the temple area, and you did not seize me; but this is your hour, the time for the power of darkness."
They seized him then and led him away, and they took him to the high priest's house. Peter fol owedat a distance.54 After arresting him they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest; Peter was following at a distance.
They had lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and Peter sat down among them,55 They lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat around it, and Peter sat down with them.
and as he was sitting there by the blaze a servant-girl saw him, peered at him, and said, 'This manwas with him too.'56 When a maid saw him seated in the light, she looked intently at him and said, "This man too was with him."
But he denied it. 'Woman, I do not know him,' he said.57 But he denied it saying, "Woman, I do not know him."
Shortly afterwards someone else saw him and said, 'You are one of them too.' But Peter replied, 'I amnot, my friend.'58 A short while later someone else saw him and said, "You too are one of them"; but Peter answered, "My friend, I am not."
About an hour later another man insisted, saying, 'This fel ow was certainly with him. Why, he is aGalilean.'59 About an hour later, still another insisted, "Assuredly, this man too was with him, for he also is a Galilean."
Peter said, 'My friend, I do not know what you are talking about.' At that instant, while he was stilspeaking, the cock crowed,60 But Peter said, "My friend, I do not know what you are talking about." Just as he was saying this, the cock crowed,
and the Lord turned and looked straight at Peter, and Peter remembered the Lord's words when hehad said to him, 'Before the cock crows today, you will have disowned me three times.'61 and the Lord turned and looked at Peter; and Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, "Before the cock crows today, you will deny me three times."
And he went outside and wept bitterly.62 He went out and began to weep bitterly.
Meanwhile the men who guarded Jesus were mocking and beating him.63 The men who held Jesus in custody were ridiculing and beating him.
They blindfolded him and questioned him, saying, 'Prophesy! Who hit you then?'64 They blindfolded him and questioned him, saying, "Prophesy! Who is it that struck you?"
And they heaped many other insults on him.65 And they reviled him in saying many other things against him.
When day broke there was a meeting of the elders of the people, the chief priests and scribes. Hewas brought before their council,66 When day came the council of elders of the people met, both chief priests and scribes, and they brought him before their Sanhedrin.
and they said to him, 'If you are the Christ, tel us.' He replied, 'If I tel you, you wil not believe,67 They said, "If you are the Messiah, tell us," but he replied to them, "If I tell you, you will not believe,
and if I question you, you will not answer.68 and if I question, you will not respond.
But from now on, the Son of man wil be seated at the right hand of the Power of God.'69 But from this time on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God."
They all said, 'So you are the Son of God then?' He answered, 'It is you who say I am.'70 They all asked, "Are you then the Son of God?" He replied to them, "You say that I am."
Then they said, 'Why do we need any evidence? We have heard it for ourselves from his own lips.'71 Then they said, "What further need have we for testimony? We have heard it from his own mouth."
