1 The feast of Unleavened Bread, cal ed the Passover, was now drawing near,	1 E avvicinatasi la festa degli azzimi, che chiamasi Pasqua:
2 and the chief priests and the scribes were looking for some way of doing away with him, because theywere afraid of the people.	2 E i principi de' sacerdoti, e gli Scribi cercavano il modo di uccidere Gesù; ma avevan paura del popolo.
3 Then Satan entered into Judas, surnamed Iscariot, who was one of the Twelve.	3 E Satana entrò in Giuda, cognominato Iscariote, uno dei dodici:
4 He approached the chief priests and the officers of the guard to discuss some way of handing Jesusover to them.	4 E andò a discorrere coi principi de' sacerdoti, e coi magistrati del modo di darlo ad essi nelle mani.
5 They were delighted and agreed to give him money.	5 E ne fecer festa, e convennero di dargli una somma di denaro.
6 He accepted and began to look for an opportunity to betray him to them without people knowing aboutit.	6 E n' andò d'accordo. E cercava opportunità di darlo senza romore nelle lor mani.
7 The day of Unleavened Bread came round, on which the Passover had to be sacrificed,	7 E venne il di degli azzimi, nel quale si doveva immolare la Pasqua.
8 and he sent Peter and John, saying, 'Go and make the preparations for us to eat the Passover.'	8 E mandò Pietro, e Giovanni, dicendo loro: Andate, preparateci da mangiare la Pasqua.
9 They asked him, 'Where do you want us to prepare it?'	9 E quelli risposero: Dove vuoi tu, che apparecchiamo?
10 He said to them, 'Look, as you go into the city you wil meet a man carrying a pitcher of water. Fol owhim into the house he enters	10 Ed ei disse loro: Al primo entrar in città vi imbatterete in un uomo, che avrà una brocca d'acqua: andategli dietro fino alla casa, nella quale entrerà,
11 and tel the owner of the house, "The Master says this to you: Where is the room for me to eat thePassover with my disciples?"	11 E direte al capo di casa: Il maestro dice a te. Dov'è l'ospizio, in cui io mangi la Pasqua co' miei discepoli?
12 The man wil show you a large upper room furnished with couches. Make the preparations there.'	12 Ed egli vi mostrerà un gran cenacolo messo in ordine, e ivi apparecchiate.
13 They set off and found everything as he had told them and prepared the Passover.	13 E andati che furono, trovarono,come Gesù aveva detto loro, e prepararon la Pasqua.
14 When the time came he took his place at table, and the apostles with him.	14 E giunta l'ora, si mise a tavola, e con esso i dodici Apostoli:
15 And he said to them, 'I have ardently longed to eat this Passover with you before I suffer;	15 E disse loro; Ardentemente ho bramato di mangiar questa Pasqua con voi prima della mia passione.
16 because, I tel you, I shal not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.'	16 Imperocché vi dico, che non ne mangerò più, fino a tanto che ella sia adempita nel regno di Dio.
17 Then, taking a cup, he gave thanks and said, 'Take this and share it among you,	17 E preso il calice, e rese le grazie, disse: Prendete, e distribuitelo fra voi:
18 because from now on, I tel you, I shall never again drink wine until the kingdom of God comes.'	18 Imperocché vi dico, che io non berò il frutto della vite, sino a tanto che il regno di Dio da venuto.
19 Then he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, 'This ismy body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.'	19 E preso il pane, rendè le grazie, e lo spezzò, e lo diede loro, dicendo: Questo è il mio Corpo, il quale è dato per voi: fate questo in memoria di me.
20 He did the same with the cup after supper, and said, 'This cup is the new covenant in my bloodpoured out for you.	20 Similmente ancora il calice, finita che fu la cena, dicendo: Questo è il calice il nuovo testamento nel sangue mio, il quale per voi si spargerà.
21 'But look, here with me on the table is the hand of the man who is betraying me.	21 Del rimanente ecco che la mano di chi mi tradisce, è meco a mensa.
22 The Son of man is indeed on the path which was decreed, but alas for that man by whom he isbetrayed!'	22 E quanto al Figliuol dell'uomo egli sen va, secondo che è stabilito: ma guai all'uomo, da cui sarà egli tradito.
23 And they began to ask one another which of them it could be who was to do this.	23 Ed essi cominciarono a domandare l'uno all'altro, chi di loro fosse colui, che tal cosa avrebbe fatto.
24 An argument also began between them about who should be reckoned the greatest;	24 Nacque di più tra di loro contesaI sopra chi di essi paresse essere il maggiore.
25 but he said to them, 'Among the gentiles it is the kings who lord it over them, and those who haveauthority over them are given the title Benefactor.	25 Ma egli disse loro: I re delle genti le governano con impero: e quelli, che le hanno sotto il loro dominio, si chiamano benefattori.
26 With you this must not happen. No; the greatest among you must behave as if he were the youngest,the leader as if he were the one who serves.	26 Non così però tra di voi: ma chi tra di voi è più grande, sia come il più piccolo: e colui, che precede, sia come: uno, che serve.
27 For who is the greater: the one at table or the one who serves? The one at table, surely? Yet here amI among you as one who serves!	27 Imperocché chi è da più, colui, che siede, o colui, che serve a tavola? Non è egli da più colui, che siede? Or io sono tra voi come uno, che serve.
28 'You are the men who have stood by me faithful y in my trials;	28 E voi siete quelli, che avete continuato a star meco nelle mie tentazioni.
29 and now I confer a kingdom on you, just as my Father conferred one on me:	29 E io dispongo a favor vostro del regno, come il Padre ne ha disposto a favor mio,
30 you wil eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and you wil sit on thrones to judge the twelve tribesof Israel.	30 Affinchè mangiate, e beviate alla mia mensa nel regno mio: e sediate in trono a far giudizio delle dodici tribù di Israele.
31 'Simon, Simon! Look, Satan has got his wish to sift you al like wheat;	31 Disse di più il Signore: Simone, Simone, ecco che Satana va io cerca di voi per vagliarvi, come si fa del grano:
32 but I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail, and once you have recovered, you inyour turn must strengthen your brothers.'	32 Ma io ho pregato per te, affinchè la fede non venga meno: e tu una volta ravveduto conferma i tuoi fratelli.
33 'Lord,' he answered, 'I would be ready to go to prison with you, and to death.'	33 Egli però dissegli: Signore, son pronto ad andar teco e alla prigioni alla morte.
34 Jesus replied, 'I tell you, Peter, by the time the cock crows today you wil have denied three times thatyou know me.'	34 Ma Gesù gli disse; Dico a te o Pietro, non canterà oggi il gallo prima, che tu per tre volte nieghi d'avermi conosciuto. E disse loro:
35 He said to them, 'When I sent you out without purse or haversack or sandals, were you short ofanything?'	35 Quando vi mandai senza sacca, senza borsa, e senza scarpe, vi mancò egli mai nulla?
36 'No, nothing,' they said. He said to them, 'But now if you have a purse, take it, and the same with ahaversack; if you have no sword, sell your cloak and buy one,	36 Ed essi dissero: Nulla. Disse e loro adunque: Adesso poi chi ha una sacca, la prenda, e cosi anche la borsa: ne chi non la ha, venda la sua tonaca, e comperi una spada.
37 because I tell you these words of scripture are destined to be fulfil ed in me: He was counted as oneof the rebel ious. Yes, what it says about me is even now reaching its fulfilment.'	37 Imperocché vi dico, esser necessario tuttora, che in me si adempia quello, che è stato scritto: Egli è stato noverato tra gli scellerati. Imperocché le cose, che riguardano me, sono presso al loro compimento.
38 They said, 'Lord, here are two swords.' He said to them, 'That is enough!'	38 Ma quelli risposero: Signore, ecco qui due spade. Ed ei disse loro: Non più.
39 He then left to make his way as usual to the Mount of Olives, with the disciples fol owing.	39 E si mosse per andare, secondo il suo solito al monte Oliveto. E i suoi discepoli ancora lo seguitarono.
40 When he reached the place he said to them, 'Pray not to be put to the test.'	40 E giunto che vi fu, disse loro: Orate, a fine di non cadere in tentazione.
41 Then he withdrew from them, about a stone's throw away, and knelt down and prayed.	41 E distaccossi da loro, quanto è un tiro di sasso: e inginocchiatosi orava,
42 'Father,' he said, 'if you are wil ing, take this cup away from me. Nevertheless, let your will be done,not mine.'	42 Dicendo: Padre, se vuoi, allontana da me questo calice: per altro facciasi non la mia volontà ma la tua.
43 Then an angel appeared to him, coming from heaven to give him strength.	43 E gli apparve un Angelo dal cielo per confortarlo. Ed entrato in agonìa orava più intensamente.
44 In his anguish he prayed even more earnestly, and his sweat fell to the ground like great drops ofblood.	44 E diede in un sudore, come di goccie di sangue, che scorreva a terra.
45 When he rose from prayer he went to the disciples and found them sleeping for sheer grief.	45 E alzatosi dall'orazione, e portatosi da' suoi discepoli, trovogli addormentati per la tristezza.
46 And he said to them, 'Why are you asleep? Get up and pray not to be put to the test.'	46 E disse loro: Perché dormite? alzatevi, orate affine di non entrare in tentazione.
47 Suddenly, while he was still speaking, a number of men appeared, and at the head of them the mancal ed Judas, one of the Twelve, who went up to Jesus to kiss him.	47 Prima che ei finisse di dir queste parole, ecco che sopraggiunse una truppa di gente: e colui, che chiamavasi Giuda, uno de' dodici, andava loro innanzi: e accostossi a Gesù per baciarlo.
48 Jesus said, 'Judas, are you betraying the Son of man with a kiss?'	48 E Gesù gli disse: Giuda, con un bacio tradisci il Figliuolo dell'uomo?
49 His followers, seeing what was about to happen, said, 'Lord, shal we use our swords?'	49 E quelli, che erano intorno a Gesù, vedendo, dove la casa andava a parare, gli dissero: Signore, adopreremo noi la spada?
50 And one of them struck the high priest's servant and cut off his right ear.	50 E uno di essi ferì un servo del principe de' sacerdoti, e gli tagliò l'orecchio destro.
51 But at this Jesus said, 'That is enough.' And touching the man's ear he healed him.	51 Ma Gesù prese la parola, e disse: Basti così. E toccata l'orecchia di colui, lo risanò.
52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests and captains of the Temple guard and elders who had come forhim, 'Am I a bandit, that you had to set out with swords and clubs?	52 Disse poi Gesù ai principi de' sacerdoti, e ai prefetti del tempio, e ai seniori, i quali si erano mossi contro di lui: Siete venuti armati di spade, e di bastoni quasi contro un ladrone?
53 When I was among you in the Temple day after day you never made a move to lay hands on me. Butthis is your hour; this is the reign of darkness.'	53 Quand'io con voi mi trovava ogni di nel tempio, non istendeste mai la mano contro di me: ma questa è la vostr'ora, e la balìa delle tenebre.
54 They seized him then and led him away, and they took him to the high priest's house. Peter fol owedat a distance.	54 E preso che l'ebbero, lo condussero a casa del prìncipe de' sacerdoti: e Pietro lo seguiva alla lontana.
55 They had lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and Peter sat down among them,	55 E avendo la gente acceso il fuoco nel cortile, e stando a sedere all'intorno, stava anche Pietro sedendo in mezzo ad essi.
56 and as he was sitting there by the blaze a servant-girl saw him, peered at him, and said, 'This manwas with him too.'	56 E una serva veduto lui, che al fuoco sedeva, e miratolo fissamente, disse: Questi ancora era con lui.
57 But he denied it. 'Woman, I do not know him,' he said.	57 Ma egli lo rinnegò, dicendo: Donna, io noi conosco.
58 Shortly afterwards someone else saw him and said, 'You are one of them too.' But Peter replied, 'I amnot, my friend.'	58 Di lì a poco un altro vedendolo, gli disse: Anche tu sei un di coloro. Ma Pietro disse: O uomo, io nol sono.
59 About an hour later another man insisted, saying, 'This fel ow was certainly with him. Why, he is aGalilean.'	59 E quasi un'ora dopo un altro diceva asseverantemente: Certo anche questi era con colui: imperocché anch' egli è Galileo.
60 Peter said, 'My friend, I do not know what you are talking about.' At that instant, while he was stilspeaking, the cock crowed,	60 E Pietro rispose: O uomo, io non so quel, che tu dica. E immediatamente, prima che egli avesse finite queste parole, il gallo cantò.
61 and the Lord turned and looked straight at Peter, and Peter remembered the Lord's words when hehad said to him, 'Before the cock crows today, you will have disowned me three times.'	61 E il Signore si rivolse a mirar Pietro. E Pietro si ricordò della parola dettagli dal Signore: Prima che il gallo canti, mi rinnegherai tre volte.
62 And he went outside and wept bitterly.	62 E Pietro usci fuora, e pianse amaramente.
63 Meanwhile the men who guarded Jesus were mocking and beating him.	63 E que', che tenevan legato Gesù, lo schernivano, e davangli delle percosse.
64 They blindfolded him and questioned him, saying, 'Prophesy! Who hit you then?'	64 E gli bendarono gli occhi, e gli davano delle guanciate: e lo interrogavano con dire: Indovina, chi è, che ti ha percosso?
65 And they heaped many other insults on him.	65 E molte altre cose bestemmiando dicevano contro di lui.
66 When day broke there was a meeting of the elders of the people, the chief priests and scribes. Hewas brought before their council,	66 E appena fattosi giorno, si radunarono gli anziani del popolo, e i principi de' sacerdoti, e gli Scribi, e lo menarono nel loro Sinedrio, e gli dissero: Se tu se' il Cristo, dillo a noi.
67 and they said to him, 'If you are the Christ, tel us.' He replied, 'If I tel you, you wil not believe,	67 Ma egli disse loro: Se io vel dirò, voi non mi crederete:
68 and if I question you, you will not answer.	68 E se anche vi interrogherò, nonmi risponderete, né mi darete libertà.
69 But from now on, the Son of man wil be seated at the right hand of the Power of God.'	69 Ma da ora in poi sarà il Figliuolo dell'uomo assiso alla destra della virtù di Dio.
70 They all said, 'So you are the Son of God then?' He answered, 'It is you who say I am.'	70 Tutti gli dissero: Tu dunque se' Figliuolo di Dio? Egli rispose: Voi lo dite, io lo sono.
71 Then they said, 'Why do we need any evidence? We have heard it for ourselves from his own lips.'	71 Ma quelli dissero: Che bisogno abbiamo ormai di testimoni? abbiamo noi stessi udito dalla sua propria bocca.
