1 Leaving that district, he went to his home town, and his disciples accompanied him.	1 Et egressus inde, abiit in patriam suam : et sequebantur eum discipuli sui :
2 With the coming of the Sabbath he began teaching in the synagogue, and most of them wereastonished when they heard him. They said, 'Where did the man get al this? What is this wisdom that has beengranted him, and these miracles that are worked through him?	2 et facto sabbato cœpit in synagoga docere : et multi audientes admirabantur in doctrina ejus, dicentes : Unde huic hæc omnia ? et quæ est sapientia, quæ data est illi, et virtutes tales, quæ per manus ejus efficiuntur ?
3 This is the carpenter, surely, the son of Mary, the brother of James and Joset and Jude and Simon? Hissisters, too, are they not here with us?' And they would not accept him.	3 Nonne hic est faber, filius Mariæ, frater Jacobi, et Joseph, et Judæ, et Simonis ? nonne et sorores ejus hic nobiscum sunt ? Et scandalizabantur in illo.
4 And Jesus said to them, 'A prophet is despised only in his own country, among his own relations and inhis own house';	4 Et dicebat illis Jesus : Quia non est propheta sine honore nisi in patria sua, et in domo sua, et in cognatione sua.
5 and he could work no miracle there, except that he cured a few sick people by laying his hands onthem.	5 Et non poterat ibi virtutem ullam facere, nisi paucos infirmos impositis manibus curavit :
6 He was amazed at their lack of faith. He made a tour round the vil ages, teaching.	6 et mirabatur propter incredulitatem eorum, et circuibat castella in circuitu docens.
7 Then he summoned the Twelve and began to send them out in pairs, giving them authority overunclean spirits.	7 Et vocavit duodecim : et cœpit eos mittere binos, et dabat illis potestatem spirituum immundorum.
8 And he instructed them to take nothing for the journey except a staff -- no bread, no haversack, nocoppers for their purses.	8 Et præcepit eis ne quid tollerent in via, nisi virgam tantum : non peram, non panem, neque in zona æs,
9 They were to wear sandals but, he added, 'Don't take a spare tunic.'	9 sed calceatos sandaliis, et ne induerentur duabus tunicis.
10 And he said to them, 'If you enter a house anywhere, stay there until you leave the district.	10 Et dicebat eis : Quocumque introieritis in domum, illic manete donec exeatis inde :
11 And if any place does not welcome you and people refuse to listen to you, as you walk away shake offthe dust under your feet as evidence to them.'	11 et quicumque non receperint vos, nec audierint vos, exeuntes inde, excutite pulverem de pedibus vestris in testimonium illis.
12 So they set off to proclaim repentance;	12 Et exeuntes prædicabant ut pœnitentiam agerent :
13 and they cast out many devils, and anointed many sick people with oil and cured them.	13 et dæmonia multa ejiciebant, et ungebant oleo multos ægros, et sanabant.
14 King Herod had heard about him, since by now his name was wel known. Some were saying, 'Johnthe Baptist has risen from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.'	14 Et audivit rex Herodes (manifestum enim factum est nomen ejus), et dicebat : Quia Joannes Baptista resurrexit a mortuis : et propterea virtutes operantur in illo.
15 Others said, 'He is Elijah,' others again, 'He is a prophet, like the prophets we used to have.'	15 Alii autem dicebant : Quia Elias est ; alii vero dicebant : Quia propheta est, quasi unus ex prophetis.
16 But when Herod heard this he said, 'It is John whose head I cut off; he has risen from the dead.'	16 Quo audito Herodes ait : Quem ego decollavi Joannem, hic a mortuis resurrexit.
17 Now it was this same Herod who had sent to have John arrested, and had had him chained up inprison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife whom he had married.	17 Ipse enim Herodes misit, ac tenuit Joannem, et vinxit eum in carcere propter Herodiadem uxorem Philippi fratris sui, quia duxerat eam.
18 For John had told Herod, 'It is against the law for you to have your brother's wife.'	18 Dicebat enim Joannes Herodi : Non licet tibi habere uxorem fratris tui.
19 As for Herodias, she was furious with him and wanted to kil him, but she was not able to do so,	19 Herodias autem insidiabatur illi : et volebat occidere eum, nec poterat.
20 because Herod was in awe of John, knowing him to be a good and upright man, and gave him hisprotection. When he had heard him speak he was greatly perplexed, and yet he liked to listen to him.	20 Herodes enim metuebat Joannem, sciens eum virum justum et sanctum : et custodiebat eum, et audito eo multa faciebat, et libenter eum audiebat.
21 An opportunity came on Herod's birthday when he gave a banquet for the nobles of his court, for hisarmy officers and for the leading figures in Galilee.	21 Et cum dies opportunus accidisset, Herodes natalis sui cœnam fecit principibus, et tribunis, et primis Galilææ :
22 When the daughter of this same Herodias came in and danced, she delighted Herod and his guests;so the king said to the girl, 'Ask me anything you like and I will give it you.'	22 cumque introisset filia ipsius Herodiadis, et saltasset, et placuisset Herodi, simulque recumbentibus, rex ait puellæ : Pete a me quod vis, et dabo tibi :
23 And he swore her an oath, 'I wil give you anything you ask, even half my kingdom.'	23 et juravit illi : Quia quidquid petieris dabo tibi, licet dimidium regni mei.
24 She went out and said to her mother, 'What shall I ask for?' She replied, 'The head of John theBaptist.'	24 Quæ cum exisset, dixit matri suæ : Quid petam ? At illa dixit : Caput Joannis Baptistæ.
25 The girl at once rushed back to the king and made her request, 'I want you to give me John theBaptist's head, immediately, on a dish.'	25 Cumque introisset statim cum festinatione ad regem, petivit dicens : Volo ut protinus des mihi in disco caput Joannis Baptistæ.
26 The king was deeply distressed but, thinking of the oaths he had sworn and of his guests, he wasreluctant to break his word to her.	26 Et contristatus est rex : propter jusjurandum, et propter simul discumbentes, noluit eam contristare :
27 At once the king sent one of the bodyguard with orders to bring John's head.	27 sed misso spiculatore præcepit afferri caput ejus in disco. Et decollavit eum in carcere,
28 The man went off and beheaded him in the prison; then he brought the head on a dish and gave it tothe girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.	28 et attulit caput ejus in disco : et dedit illud puellæ, et puella dedit matri suæ.
29 When John's disciples heard about this, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.	29 Quo audito, discipuli ejus venerunt, et tulerunt corpus ejus : et posuerunt illud in monumento.
30 The apostles rejoined Jesus and told him al they had done and taught.	30 Et convenientes Apostoli ad Jesum, renuntiaverunt ei omnia quæ egerant, et docuerant.
31 And he said to them, 'Come away to some lonely place al by yourselves and rest for a while'; for therewere so many coming and going that there was no time for them even to eat.	31 Et ait illis : Venite seorsum in desertum locum, et requiescite pusillum. Erant enim qui veniebant et redibant multi : et nec spatium manducandi habebant.
32 So they went off in the boat to a lonely place where they could be by themselves.	32 Et ascendentes in navim, abierunt in desertum locum seorsum.
33 But people saw them going, and many recognised them; and from every town they al hurried to theplace on foot and reached it before them.	33 Et viderunt eos abeuntes, et cognoverunt multi : et pedestres de omnibus civitatibus concurrerunt illuc, et prævenerunt eos.
34 So as he stepped ashore he saw a large crowd; and he took pity on them because they were likesheep without a shepherd, and he set himself to teach them at some length.	34 Et exiens vidit turbam multam Jesus : et misertus est super eos, quia erant sicut oves non habentes pastorem, et cœpit docere multa.
35 By now it was getting very late, and his disciples came up to him and said, 'This is a lonely place and itis getting very late,	35 Et cum jam hora multa fieret, accesserunt discipuli ejus, dicentes : Desertus est locus hic, et jam hora præteriit :
36 so send them away, and they can go to the farms and villages round about, to buy themselvessomething to eat.'	36 dimitte illos, ut euntes in proximas villas et vicos, emant sibi cibos, quos manducent.
37 He replied, 'Give them something to eat yourselves.' They answered, 'Are we to go and spend twohundred denari on bread for them to eat?'	37 Et respondens ait illis : Date illis vos manducare. Et dixerunt ei : Euntes emamus ducentis denariis panes, et dabimus illis manducare.
38 He asked, 'How many loaves have you? Go and see.' And when they had found out they said, 'Five,and two fish.'	38 Et dicit eis : Quot panes habetis ? ite, et videte. Et cum cognovissent, dicunt : Quinque, et duos pisces.
39 Then he ordered them to get all the people to sit down in groups on the green grass,	39 Et præcepit illis ut accumbere facerent omnes secundum contubernia super viride fœnum.
40 and they sat down on the ground in squares of hundreds and fifties.	40 Et discubuerunt in partes per centenos et quinquagenos.
41 Then he took the five loaves and the two fish, raised his eyes to heaven and said the blessing; then hebroke the loaves and began handing them to his disciples to distribute among the people. He also shared out thetwo fish among them al .	41 Et acceptis quinque panibus et duobus piscibus, intuens in cælum, benedixit, et fregit panes, et dedit discipulis suis, ut ponerent ante eos : et duos pisces divisit omnibus.
42 They al ate as much as they wanted.	42 Et manducaverunt omnes, et saturati sunt.
43 They col ected twelve basketfuls of scraps of bread and pieces of fish.	43 Et sustulerunt reliquias, fragmentorum duodecim cophinos plenos, et de piscibus.
44 Those who had eaten the loaves numbered five thousand men.	44 Erant autem qui manducaverunt quinque millia virorum.
45 And at once he made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side near Bethsaida,while he himself sent the crowd away.	45 Et statim coëgit discipulos suos ascendere navim, ut præcederent eum trans fretum ad Bethsaidam, dum ipse dimitteret populum.
46 After saying goodbye to them he went off into the hills to pray.	46 Et cum dimisisset eos, abiit in montem orare.
47 When evening came, the boat was far out on the sea, and he was alone on the land.	47 Et cum sero esset, erat navis in medio mari et ipse solus in terra.
48 He could see that they were hard pressed in their rowing, for the wind was against them; and aboutthe fourth watch of the night he came towards them, walking on the sea. He was going to pass them by,	48 Et videns eos laborantes in remigando (erat enim ventus contrarius eis) et circa quartam vigiliam noctis venit ad eos ambulans supra mare : et volebat præterire eos.
49 but when they saw him walking on the sea they thought it was a ghost and cried out;	49 At illi ut viderunt eum ambulantem supra mare, putaverunt phantasma esse, et exclamaverunt.
50 for they had all seen him and were terrified. But at once he spoke to them and said, 'Courage! It's me!Don't be afraid.'	50 Omnes enim viderunt eum, et conturbati sunt. Et statim locutus est cum eis, et dixit eis : Confidite, ego sum : nolite timere.
51 Then he got into the boat with them and the wind dropped. They were utterly and completelydumbfounded,	51 Et ascendit ad illos in navim, et cessavit ventus. Et plus magis intra se stupebant :
52 because they had not seen what the miracle of the loaves meant; their minds were closed.	52 non enim intellexerunt de panibus : erat enim cor eorum obcæcatum.
53 Having made the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored there.	53 Et cum transfretassent, venerunt in terram Genesareth, et applicuerunt.
54 When they disembarked people at once recognised him,	54 Cumque egressi essent de navi, continuo cognoverunt eum :
55 and started hurrying al through the countryside and brought the sick on stretchers to wherever theyheard he was.	55 et percurrentes universam regionem illam, cœperunt in grabatis eos, qui se male habebant, circumferre, ubi audiebant eum esse.
56 And wherever he went, to vil age or town or farm, they laid down the sick in the open spaces, begginghim to let them touch even the fringe of his cloak. And al those who touched him were saved.	56 Et quocumque introibat, in vicos, vel in villas aut civitates, in plateis ponebant infirmos, et deprecabantur eum, ut vel fimbriam vestimenti ejus tangerent, et quotquot tangebant eum, salvi fiebant.
