NEW JERUSALEMKING JAMES BIBLE
Leaving that district, he went to his home town, and his disciples accompanied him.1 And he went out from thence, and came into his own country; and his disciples follow him.
With the coming of the Sabbath he began teaching in the synagogue, and most of them wereastonished when they heard him. They said, 'Where did the man get al this? What is this wisdom that has beengranted him, and these miracles that are worked through him?2 And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands?
This is the carpenter, surely, the son of Mary, the brother of James and Joset and Jude and Simon? Hissisters, too, are they not here with us?' And they would not accept him.3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him.
And Jesus said to them, 'A prophet is despised only in his own country, among his own relations and inhis own house';4 But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.
and he could work no miracle there, except that he cured a few sick people by laying his hands onthem.5 And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them.
He was amazed at their lack of faith. He made a tour round the vil ages, teaching.6 And he marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages, teaching.
Then he summoned the Twelve and began to send them out in pairs, giving them authority overunclean spirits.7 And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits;
And he instructed them to take nothing for the journey except a staff -- no bread, no haversack, nocoppers for their purses.8 And commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey, save a staff only; no scrip, no bread, no money in their purse:
They were to wear sandals but, he added, 'Don't take a spare tunic.'9 But be shod with sandals; and not put on two coats.
And he said to them, 'If you enter a house anywhere, stay there until you leave the district.10 And he said unto them, In what place soever ye enter into an house, there abide till ye depart from that place.
And if any place does not welcome you and people refuse to listen to you, as you walk away shake offthe dust under your feet as evidence to them.'11 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.
So they set off to proclaim repentance;12 And they went out, and preached that men should repent.
and they cast out many devils, and anointed many sick people with oil and cured them.13 And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.
King Herod had heard about him, since by now his name was wel known. Some were saying, 'Johnthe Baptist has risen from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.'14 And king Herod heard of him; (for his name was spread abroad:) and he said, That John the Baptist was risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.
Others said, 'He is Elijah,' others again, 'He is a prophet, like the prophets we used to have.'15 Others said, That it is Elias. And others said, That it is a prophet, or as one of the prophets.
But when Herod heard this he said, 'It is John whose head I cut off; he has risen from the dead.'16 But when Herod heard thereof, he said, It is John, whom I beheaded: he is risen from the dead.
Now it was this same Herod who had sent to have John arrested, and had had him chained up inprison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife whom he had married.17 For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife: for he had married her.
For John had told Herod, 'It is against the law for you to have your brother's wife.'18 For John had said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife.
As for Herodias, she was furious with him and wanted to kil him, but she was not able to do so,19 Therefore Herodias had a quarrel against him, and would have killed him; but she could not:
because Herod was in awe of John, knowing him to be a good and upright man, and gave him hisprotection. When he had heard him speak he was greatly perplexed, and yet he liked to listen to him.20 For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just man and an holy, and observed him; and when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly.
An opportunity came on Herod's birthday when he gave a banquet for the nobles of his court, for hisarmy officers and for the leading figures in Galilee.21 And when a convenient day was come, that Herod on his birthday made a supper to his lords, high captains, and chief estates of Galilee;
When the daughter of this same Herodias came in and danced, she delighted Herod and his guests;so the king said to the girl, 'Ask me anything you like and I will give it you.'22 And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in, and danced, and pleased Herod and them that sat with him, the king said unto the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee.
And he swore her an oath, 'I wil give you anything you ask, even half my kingdom.'23 And he sware unto her, Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee, unto the half of my kingdom.
She went out and said to her mother, 'What shall I ask for?' She replied, 'The head of John theBaptist.'24 And she went forth, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptist.
The girl at once rushed back to the king and made her request, 'I want you to give me John theBaptist's head, immediately, on a dish.'25 And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, I will that thou give me by and by in a charger the head of John the Baptist.
The king was deeply distressed but, thinking of the oaths he had sworn and of his guests, he wasreluctant to break his word to her.26 And the king was exceeding sorry; yet for his oath's sake, and for their sakes which sat with him, he would not reject her.
At once the king sent one of the bodyguard with orders to bring John's head.27 And immediately the king sent an executioner, and commanded his head to be brought: and he went and beheaded him in the prison,
The man went off and beheaded him in the prison; then he brought the head on a dish and gave it tothe girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.28 And brought his head in a charger, and gave it to the damsel: and the damsel gave it to her mother.
When John's disciples heard about this, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.29 And when his disciples heard of it, they came and took up his corpse, and laid it in a tomb.
The apostles rejoined Jesus and told him al they had done and taught.30 And the apostles gathered themselves together unto Jesus, and told him all things, both what they had done, and what they had taught.
And he said to them, 'Come away to some lonely place al by yourselves and rest for a while'; for therewere so many coming and going that there was no time for them even to eat.31 And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.
So they went off in the boat to a lonely place where they could be by themselves.32 And they departed into a desert place by ship privately.
But people saw them going, and many recognised them; and from every town they al hurried to theplace on foot and reached it before them.33 And the people saw them departing, and many knew him, and ran afoot thither out of all cities, and outwent them, and came together unto him.
So as he stepped ashore he saw a large crowd; and he took pity on them because they were likesheep without a shepherd, and he set himself to teach them at some length.34 And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things.
By now it was getting very late, and his disciples came up to him and said, 'This is a lonely place and itis getting very late,35 And when the day was now far spent, his disciples came unto him, and said, This is a desert place, and now the time is far passed:
so send them away, and they can go to the farms and villages round about, to buy themselvessomething to eat.'36 Send them away, that they may go into the country round about, and into the villages, and buy themselves bread: for they have nothing to eat.
He replied, 'Give them something to eat yourselves.' They answered, 'Are we to go and spend twohundred denari on bread for them to eat?'37 He answered and said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they say unto him, Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and give them to eat?
He asked, 'How many loaves have you? Go and see.' And when they had found out they said, 'Five, and two fish.'38 He saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? go and see. And when they knew, they say, Five, and two fishes.
Then he ordered them to get all the people to sit down in groups on the green grass,39 And he commanded them to make all sit down by companies upon the green grass.
and they sat down on the ground in squares of hundreds and fifties.40 And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds, and by fifties.
Then he took the five loaves and the two fish, raised his eyes to heaven and said the blessing; then hebroke the loaves and began handing them to his disciples to distribute among the people. He also shared out thetwo fish among them al .41 And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all.
They al ate as much as they wanted.42 And they did all eat, and were filled.
They col ected twelve basketfuls of scraps of bread and pieces of fish.43 And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fishes.
Those who had eaten the loaves numbered five thousand men.44 And they that did eat of the loaves were about five thousand men.
And at once he made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side near Bethsaida, while he himself sent the crowd away.45 And straightway he constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while he sent away the people.
After saying goodbye to them he went off into the hills to pray.46 And when he had sent them away, he departed into a mountain to pray.
When evening came, the boat was far out on the sea, and he was alone on the land.47 And when even was come, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land.
He could see that they were hard pressed in their rowing, for the wind was against them; and aboutthe fourth watch of the night he came towards them, walking on the sea. He was going to pass them by,48 And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them.
but when they saw him walking on the sea they thought it was a ghost and cried out;49 But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they supposed it had been a spirit, and cried out:
for they had all seen him and were terrified. But at once he spoke to them and said, 'Courage! It's me!Don't be afraid.'50 For they all saw him, and were troubled. And immediately he talked with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid.
Then he got into the boat with them and the wind dropped. They were utterly and completelydumbfounded,51 And he went up unto them into the ship; and the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure, and wondered.
because they had not seen what the miracle of the loaves meant; their minds were closed.52 For they considered not the miracle of the loaves: for their heart was hardened.
Having made the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored there.53 And when they had passed over, they came into the land of Gennesaret, and drew to the shore.
When they disembarked people at once recognised him,54 And when they were come out of the ship, straightway they knew him,
and started hurrying al through the countryside and brought the sick on stretchers to wherever theyheard he was.55 And ran through that whole region round about, and began to carry about in beds those that were sick, where they heard he was.
And wherever he went, to vil age or town or farm, they laid down the sick in the open spaces, begginghim to let them touch even the fringe of his cloak. And al those who touched him were saved.56 And whithersoever he entered, into villages, or cities, or country, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment: and as many as touched him were made whole.
