1 Leaving that district, he went to his home town, and his disciples accompanied him.	1 Uscito di lì, Gesù venne nella sua patria, accompagnato dai suoi discepoli.
2 With the coming of the Sabbath he began teaching in the synagogue, and most of them wereastonished when they heard him. They said, 'Where did the man get al this? What is this wisdom that has beengranted him, and these miracles that are worked through him?	2 Venuto il sabato, si mise a insegnare nella sinagoga e i molti ascoltatori, stupiti, dicevano: "Donde ha costui tali cose? Che sapienza è quella che gli è stata data? E che miracoli avvengono per le sue mani?
3 This is the carpenter, surely, the son of Mary, the brother of James and Joset and Jude and Simon? Hissisters, too, are they not here with us?' And they would not accept him.	3 Non è egli il falegname, il figlio di Maria e fratello di Giacomo, di Giuseppe, di Giuda e di Simone? E le sue sorelle non sono qui tra noi?". E si scandalizzavano di lui.
4 And Jesus said to them, 'A prophet is despised only in his own country, among his own relations and inhis own house';	4 Gesù, però, diceva loro: "Non c'è profeta che sia disprezzato se non nella sua patria, tra i suoi parenti e nella sua casa".
5 and he could work no miracle there, except that he cured a few sick people by laying his hands onthem.	5 Non poté farvi alcun miracolo, ma soltanto guarire pochi infermi, imponendo loro le mani,
6 He was amazed at their lack of faith. He made a tour round the vil ages, teaching.	6 ed era meravigliato della loro incredulità. Egli percorreva i villaggi all'intorno e insegnava.
7 Then he summoned the Twelve and began to send them out in pairs, giving them authority overunclean spirits.	7 Chiamati a sé i Dodici, incominciò a inviarli a due a due, dando loro il potere sopra gli spiriti immondi.
8 And he instructed them to take nothing for the journey except a staff -- no bread, no haversack, nocoppers for their purses.	8 Comandò loro che, ad eccezione di un bastone, non prendessero nulla per il viaggio: né pane né bisaccia né denaro nella cintura;
9 They were to wear sandals but, he added, 'Don't take a spare tunic.'	9 che calzassero i sandali, ma non indossassero due tuniche.
10 And he said to them, 'If you enter a house anywhere, stay there until you leave the district.	10 Diceva loro: "Dovunque entriate in una casa, rimanetevi finché non partiate di là.
11 And if any place does not welcome you and people refuse to listen to you, as you walk away shake offthe dust under your feet as evidence to them.'	11 Ma se in un luogo non vi si ricevesse né vi si desse ascolto, andate via di là e scuotete la polvere da sotto i vostri piedi in testimonianza contro di essi".
12 So they set off to proclaim repentance;	12 Essi partirono, predicando che si convertissero;
13 and they cast out many devils, and anointed many sick people with oil and cured them.	13 scacciavano molti demòni, ungevano con olio molti malati e li guarivano.
14 King Herod had heard about him, since by now his name was wel known. Some were saying, 'Johnthe Baptist has risen from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.'	14 Il re Erode udì parlare di Gesù, giacché il suo nome era diventato famoso e alcuni dicevano: "Giovanni il Battista è risorto dai morti e perciò il potere dei miracoli opera in lui".
15 Others said, 'He is Elijah,' others again, 'He is a prophet, like the prophets we used to have.'	15 Altri invece dicevano: "E' Elia"; altri ancora: "E' un profeta: uno come gli altri".
16 But when Herod heard this he said, 'It is John whose head I cut off; he has risen from the dead.'	16 Erode invece, udendo queste cose, diceva: "Quel Giovanni che io feci decapitare è risorto".
17 Now it was this same Herod who had sent to have John arrested, and had had him chained up inprison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife whom he had married.	17 Erode, infatti, aveva mandato ad arrestare Giovanni e lo aveva fatto incatenare in una prigione a motivo di Erodiade, moglie di suo fratello Filippo, che egli aveva sposato.
18 For John had told Herod, 'It is against the law for you to have your brother's wife.'	18 Giovanni, infatti, diceva ad Erode: "Non ti è lecito avere la moglie di tuo fratello".
19 As for Herodias, she was furious with him and wanted to kil him, but she was not able to do so,	19 Per questo Erodiade lo odiava e voleva farlo uccidere; ma non poteva,
20 because Herod was in awe of John, knowing him to be a good and upright man, and gave him hisprotection. When he had heard him speak he was greatly perplexed, and yet he liked to listen to him.	20 perché Erode temeva Giovanni e, sapendolo uomo giusto e santo, lo difendeva, faceva molte cose dopo averlo udito e lo ascoltava volentieri.
21 An opportunity came on Herod's birthday when he gave a banquet for the nobles of his court, for hisarmy officers and for the leading figures in Galilee.	21 Giunse però il giorno propizio, allorché Erode per il suo genetliaco offrì un banchetto ai prìncipi, agli ufficiali e ai notabili della Galilea.
22 When the daughter of this same Herodias came in and danced, she delighted Herod and his guests;so the king said to the girl, 'Ask me anything you like and I will give it you.'	22 Presentàtasi la figlia della medesima Erodiade, ballò e piacque ad Erode e ai commensali. Erode disse perciò alla fanciulla: "Chiedimi ciò che vuoi ed io te lo darò".
23 And he swore her an oath, 'I wil give you anything you ask, even half my kingdom.'	23 Quindi le giurò: "Qualunque cosa mi chiederai, te la darò, fosse pure la metà del mio regno".
24 She went out and said to her mother, 'What shall I ask for?' She replied, 'The head of John theBaptist.'	24 Allora ella, uscita, disse a sua madre: "Cosa devo chiedere?". Quella rispose: "La testa di Giovanni il Battista".
25 The girl at once rushed back to the king and made her request, 'I want you to give me John theBaptist's head, immediately, on a dish.'	25 Rientrata subito in fretta dal re, gli disse: "Voglio che tu mi dia subito su un bacile la testa di Giovanni il Battista".
26 The king was deeply distressed but, thinking of the oaths he had sworn and of his guests, he wasreluctant to break his word to her.	26 Allora il re, pur essendosi fatto molto triste, a causa del giuramento e dei commensali non volle farle un rifiuto.
27 At once the king sent one of the bodyguard with orders to bring John's head.	27 Pertanto mandò subito un carnefice e gli ordinò di portare la testa di Giovanni. Questi andò, lo decapitò dentro la stessa prigione
28 The man went off and beheaded him in the prison; then he brought the head on a dish and gave it tothe girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.	28 e portò la testa di lui su un bacile, la diede alla fanciulla e la fanciulla la diede a sua madre.
29 When John's disciples heard about this, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.	29 I discepoli di lui, saputa la cosa, vennero, presero il suo cadavere e lo deposero in un sepolcro.

31 And he said to them, 'Come away to some lonely place al by yourselves and rest for a while'; for therewere so many coming and going that there was no time for them even to eat.	31 Egli disse loro: "Venite in disparte, in un luogo solitario, e riposatevi un poco". Infatti quelli che venivano e andavano erano così numerosi che non avevano neppure il tempo di mangiare.
32 So they went off in the boat to a lonely place where they could be by themselves.	32 Perciò in barca si diressero verso un luogo solitario e appartato;
33 But people saw them going, and many recognised them; and from every town they al hurried to theplace on foot and reached it before them.	33 ma molti, avendoli visti partire, compresero e a piedi, da tutte le città, accorsero in quel luogo e giunsero prima di essi.
34 So as he stepped ashore he saw a large crowd; and he took pity on them because they were likesheep without a shepherd, and he set himself to teach them at some length.	34 Sbarcando, egli vide una grande folla e ne ebbe pietà, poiché erano come pecore che non hanno pastore. Allora incominciò ad insegnare loro molte cose;
35 By now it was getting very late, and his disciples came up to him and said, 'This is a lonely place and itis getting very late,	35 ma, essendosi fatto molto tardi, i suoi discepoli gli si avvicinarono e gli dissero: "Il luogo è solitario ed è già molto tardi.
36 so send them away, and they can go to the farms and villages round about, to buy themselvessomething to eat.'	36 Congèdali, affinché vadano nelle campagne e nei villaggi all'intorno e si comprino qualcosa da mangiare".
37 He replied, 'Give them something to eat yourselves.' They answered, 'Are we to go and spend twohundred denari on bread for them to eat?'	37 Rispose loro: "Date voi a loro da mangiare!". Gli dicono: "Dobbiamo noi andare a comprare duecento denari di pane per dar loro da mangiare?".
38 He asked, 'How many loaves have you? Go and see.' And when they had found out they said, 'Five,and two fish.'	38 Dice loro: "Quanti pani avete? Andate a vedere!". Quelli, informatisi, gli dicono: "Cinque, e due pesci".
39 Then he ordered them to get all the people to sit down in groups on the green grass,	39 Allora ordinò loro di farli accomodare tutti, a gruppi, sull'erba verde.
40 and they sat down on the ground in squares of hundreds and fifties.	40 Si adagiarono a gruppi regolari di cento e di cinquanta
41 Then he took the five loaves and the two fish, raised his eyes to heaven and said the blessing; then hebroke the loaves and began handing them to his disciples to distribute among the people. He also shared out thetwo fish among them al .	41 ed egli, presi i cinque pani e i due pesci, alzando gli occhi al cielo, li benedì, spezzò i pani e li diede ai discepoli, perché li distribuissero; quindi fece dividere anche i due pesci fra tutti.
42 They al ate as much as they wanted.	42 Mangiarono tutti a sazietà
43 They col ected twelve basketfuls of scraps of bread and pieces of fish.	43 e si raccolsero dodici ceste piene di frammenti, e anche dei pesci.
44 Those who had eaten the loaves numbered five thousand men.	44 Quelli che avevano mangiato i pani erano cinquemila uomini.
45 And at once he made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side near Bethsaida,while he himself sent the crowd away.	45 Subito dopo egli costrinse i suoi discepoli a montare in barca e a precederlo sull'altra riva, verso Betsàida, mentre egli avrebbe congedato la folla.
46 After saying goodbye to them he went off into the hills to pray.	46 Quindi, accomiatatosi da loro, se ne andò sul monte a pregare.
47 When evening came, the boat was far out on the sea, and he was alone on the land.	47 Giunta la notte, mentre la barca era in mezzo al mare, egli era solo a terra.
48 He could see that they were hard pressed in their rowing, for the wind was against them; and aboutthe fourth watch of the night he came towards them, walking on the sea. He was going to pass them by,	48 Ma poi, avendo visto che essi erano stanchi di remare poiché il vento era loro contrario, verso la quarta vigilia venne verso di loro camminando sul mare. Avrebbe voluto sorpassarli;
49 but when they saw him walking on the sea they thought it was a ghost and cried out;	49 ma quelli, avendolo scorto camminare sul mare, credettero che fosse un fantasma e si misero a gridare.
50 for they had all seen him and were terrified. But at once he spoke to them and said, 'Courage! It's me!Don't be afraid.'	50 Lo avevano visto tutti, infatti, e si erano spaventati. Ma egli rivolse ad essi subito la parola e disse loro: "Coraggio! Sono io; non abbiate paura!".
51 Then he got into the boat with them and the wind dropped. They were utterly and completelydumbfounded,	51 Quindi salì con essi nella barca e il vento cessò, mentre essi internamente erano pieni di stupore.
52 because they had not seen what the miracle of the loaves meant; their minds were closed.	52 Infatti non avevano capito il fatto dei pani, essendo il loro cuore insensibile.
53 Having made the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored there.	53 Compiuta la traversata, giunsero a Genèsaret e vi approdarono.
54 When they disembarked people at once recognised him,	54 Appena furono scesi dalla barca, però, subito alcuni lo riconobbero
55 and started hurrying al through the countryside and brought the sick on stretchers to wherever theyheard he was.	55 e, percorrendo tutta quella regione, si misero a portargli su barelle i malati, ovunque sentivano che egli si trovava.
56 And wherever he went, to vil age or town or farm, they laid down the sick in the open spaces, begginghim to let them touch even the fringe of his cloak. And al those who touched him were saved.	56 Dovunque entrava, nei villaggi o nelle città o nelle campagne, collocavano gli infermi sulle piazze e lo pregavano di poter toccare anche solo il lembo del suo mantello; e quanti lo toccavano erano risanati.
