NEW JERUSALEMDOUAI-RHEIMS
Leaving that district, he went to his home town, and his disciples accompanied him.1 And going out from thence, he went into his own country; and his disciples followed him.
With the coming of the Sabbath he began teaching in the synagogue, and most of them wereastonished when they heard him. They said, 'Where did the man get al this? What is this wisdom that has beengranted him, and these miracles that are worked through him?2 And when the sabbath was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were in admiration at his doctrine, saying: How came this man by all these things? and what wisdom is this that is given to him, and such mighty works as are wrought by his hands?
This is the carpenter, surely, the son of Mary, the brother of James and Joset and Jude and Simon? Hissisters, too, are they not here with us?' And they would not accept him.3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joseph, and Jude, and Simon? are not also his sisters here with us? And they were scandalized in regard of him.
And Jesus said to them, 'A prophet is despised only in his own country, among his own relations and inhis own house';4 And Jesus said to them: A prophet is not without honor, but in his own country, and in his own house, and among his own kindred.
and he could work no miracle there, except that he cured a few sick people by laying his hands onthem.5 And he could not do any miracles there, only that he cured a few that were sick, laying his hands upon them.
He was amazed at their lack of faith. He made a tour round the vil ages, teaching.6 And he wondered because of their unbelief, and he went through the villages round about teaching.
Then he summoned the Twelve and began to send them out in pairs, giving them authority overunclean spirits.7 And he called the twelve; and began to send them two and two, and gave them power over unclean spirits.
And he instructed them to take nothing for the journey except a staff -- no bread, no haversack, nocoppers for their purses.8 And he commanded them that they should take nothing for the way, but a staff only: no scrip, no bread, nor money in their purse,
They were to wear sandals but, he added, 'Don't take a spare tunic.'9 But to be shod with sandals, and that they should not put on two coats.
And he said to them, 'If you enter a house anywhere, stay there until you leave the district.10 And he said to them: Wheresoever you shall enter into an house, there abide till you depart from that place.
And if any place does not welcome you and people refuse to listen to you, as you walk away shake offthe dust under your feet as evidence to them.'11 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you; going forth from thence, shake off the dust from your feet for a testimony to them.
So they set off to proclaim repentance;12 And going forth they preached that men should do penance:
and they cast out many devils, and anointed many sick people with oil and cured them.13 And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.
King Herod had heard about him, since by now his name was wel known. Some were saying, 'Johnthe Baptist has risen from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.'14 And king Herod heard, (for his name was made manifest,) and he said: John the Baptist is risen again from the dead, and therefore mighty works shew forth themselves in him.
Others said, 'He is Elijah,' others again, 'He is a prophet, like the prophets we used to have.'15 And others said: It is Elias. But others said: It is a prophet, as one of the prophets.
But when Herod heard this he said, 'It is John whose head I cut off; he has risen from the dead.'16 Which Herod hearing, said: John whom I beheaded, he is risen again from the dead.
Now it was this same Herod who had sent to have John arrested, and had had him chained up inprison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife whom he had married.17 For Herod himself had sent and apprehended John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias the wife of Philip his brother, because he had married her.
For John had told Herod, 'It is against the law for you to have your brother's wife.'18 For John said to Herod: It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife.
As for Herodias, she was furious with him and wanted to kil him, but she was not able to do so,19 Now Herodias laid snares for him: and was desirous to put him to death, and could not.
because Herod was in awe of John, knowing him to be a good and upright man, and gave him hisprotection. When he had heard him speak he was greatly perplexed, and yet he liked to listen to him.20 For Herod feared John, knowing him to be a just and holy man: and kept him, and when he heard him, did many things: and he heard him willingly.
An opportunity came on Herod's birthday when he gave a banquet for the nobles of his court, for hisarmy officers and for the leading figures in Galilee.21 And when a convenient day was come, Herod made a supper for his birthday, for the princes, and tribunes, and chief men of Galilee.
When the daughter of this same Herodias came in and danced, she delighted Herod and his guests;so the king said to the girl, 'Ask me anything you like and I will give it you.'22 And when the daughter of the same Herodias had come in, and had danced, and pleased Herod, and them that were at table with him, the king said to the damsel: Ask of me what thou wilt, and I will give it thee.
And he swore her an oath, 'I wil give you anything you ask, even half my kingdom.'23 And he swore to her: Whatsoever thou shalt ask I will give thee, though it be the half of my kingdom.
She went out and said to her mother, 'What shall I ask for?' She replied, 'The head of John theBaptist.'24 Who when she was gone out, said to her mother, What shall I ask? But she said: The head of John the Baptist.
The girl at once rushed back to the king and made her request, 'I want you to give me John theBaptist's head, immediately, on a dish.'25 And when she was come in immediately with haste to the king, she asked, saying: I will that forthwith thou give me in a dish, the head of John the Baptist.
The king was deeply distressed but, thinking of the oaths he had sworn and of his guests, he wasreluctant to break his word to her.26 And the king was struck sad. Yet because of his oath, and because of them that were with him at table, he would not displease her:
At once the king sent one of the bodyguard with orders to bring John's head.27 But sending an executioner, he commanded that his head should be brought in a dish.
The man went off and beheaded him in the prison; then he brought the head on a dish and gave it tothe girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.28 And he beheaded him in the prison, and brought his head in a dish: and gave it to the damsel, and the damsel gave it to her mother.
When John's disciples heard about this, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.29 Which his disciples hearing came, and took his body, and laid it in a tomb.
The apostles rejoined Jesus and told him al they had done and taught.30 And the apostles coming together unto Jesus, related to him all things that they had done and taught.
And he said to them, 'Come away to some lonely place al by yourselves and rest for a while'; for therewere so many coming and going that there was no time for them even to eat.31 And he said to them: Come apart into a desert place, and rest a little. For there were many coming and going: and they had not so much as time to eat.
So they went off in the boat to a lonely place where they could be by themselves.32 And going up into a ship, they went into a desert place apart.
But people saw them going, and many recognised them; and from every town they al hurried to theplace on foot and reached it before them.33 And they saw them going away, and many knew: and they ran flocking thither on foot from all the cities, and were there before them.
So as he stepped ashore he saw a large crowd; and he took pity on them because they were likesheep without a shepherd, and he set himself to teach them at some length.34 And Jesus going out saw a great multitude: and he had compassion on them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd, and he began to teach them many things.
By now it was getting very late, and his disciples came up to him and said, 'This is a lonely place and itis getting very late,35 And when the day was now far spent, his disciples came to him, saying: This is a desert place, and the hour is now past:
so send them away, and they can go to the farms and villages round about, to buy themselvessomething to eat.'36 Send them away, that going into the next villages and towns, they may buy themselves meat to eat.
He replied, 'Give them something to eat yourselves.' They answered, 'Are we to go and spend twohundred denari on bread for them to eat?'37 And he answering said to them: Give you them to eat. And they said to him: Let us go and buy bread for two hundred pence, and we will give them to eat.
He asked, 'How many loaves have you? Go and see.' And when they had found out they said, 'Five, and two fish.'38 And he saith to them: How many loaves have you? go and see. And when they knew, they say: Five, and two fishes
Then he ordered them to get all the people to sit down in groups on the green grass,39 And he commanded them that they should make them all sit down by companies upon the green grass.
and they sat down on the ground in squares of hundreds and fifties.40 And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds and by fifties.
Then he took the five loaves and the two fish, raised his eyes to heaven and said the blessing; then hebroke the loaves and began handing them to his disciples to distribute among the people. He also shared out thetwo fish among them al .41 And when he had taken the five loaves, and the two fishes: looking up to heaven, he blessed, and broke the loaves, and gave to his disciples to set before them: and the two fishes he divided among them all.
They al ate as much as they wanted.42 And they all did eat, and had their fill.
They col ected twelve basketfuls of scraps of bread and pieces of fish.43 And they took up the leavings, twelve full baskets of fragments, and of the fishes.
Those who had eaten the loaves numbered five thousand men.44 And they that did eat, were five thousand men.
And at once he made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side near Bethsaida, while he himself sent the crowd away.45 And immediately he obliged his disciples to go up into the ship, that they might go before him over the water to Bethsaida, whilst he dismissed the people.
After saying goodbye to them he went off into the hills to pray.46 And when he had dismissed them, he went up to the mountain to pray.
When evening came, the boat was far out on the sea, and he was alone on the land.47 And when it was late, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and himself alone on the land.
He could see that they were hard pressed in their rowing, for the wind was against them; and aboutthe fourth watch of the night he came towards them, walking on the sea. He was going to pass them by,48 And seeing them labouring in rowing, (for the wind was against them,) and about the fourth watch of the night, he cometh to them walking upon the sea, and he would have passed by them.
but when they saw him walking on the sea they thought it was a ghost and cried out;49 But they seeing him walking upon the sea, thought it was an apparition, and they cried out.
for they had all seen him and were terrified. But at once he spoke to them and said, 'Courage! It's me!Don't be afraid.'50 For they all saw him, and were troubled. And immediately he spoke with them, and said to them: Have a good heart, it is I, fear ye not.
Then he got into the boat with them and the wind dropped. They were utterly and completelydumbfounded,51 And he went up to them into the ship, and the wind ceased: and they were far more astonished within themselves:
because they had not seen what the miracle of the loaves meant; their minds were closed.52 For they understood not concerning the loaves; for their heart was blinded.
Having made the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored there.53 And when they had passed over, they came into the land of Genezareth, and set to the shore.
When they disembarked people at once recognised him,54 And when they were gone out of the ship, immediately they knew him:
and started hurrying al through the countryside and brought the sick on stretchers to wherever theyheard he was.55 And running through that whole country, they began to carry about in beds those that were sick, where they heard he was.
And wherever he went, to vil age or town or farm, they laid down the sick in the open spaces, begginghim to let them touch even the fringe of his cloak. And al those who touched him were saved.56 And whithersoever he entered, into towns or into villages or cities, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch but the hem of his garment: and as many as touched him were made whole.
