1 Leaving that district, he went to his home town, and his disciples accompanied him.	1 Étant sorti de là, Jésus se dirigea vers son village natal et ses disciples le suivaient.
2 With the coming of the Sabbath he began teaching in the synagogue, and most of them wereastonished when they heard him. They said, 'Where did the man get al this? What is this wisdom that has beengranted him, and these miracles that are worked through him?	2 Arrivé le jour du sabbat, Jésus se mit à enseigner dans la synagogue et de nombreux auditeurs en étaient stupéfaits: "D’où lui vient tout cela?” disaient-ils. “Il a reçu là une étrange sagesse, et ce sont des miracles peu ordinaires qui tombent de ses mains!
3 This is the carpenter, surely, the son of Mary, the brother of James and Joset and Jude and Simon? Hissisters, too, are they not here with us?' And they would not accept him.	3 Ce n’est pourtant que le charpentier, le fils de Marie; c’est un frère de Jacques, de Joset, de Judas et de Simon. Et ses sœurs, ne sont-elles pas ici chez nous?” Ils butaient donc et ne croyaient pas en lui.
4 And Jesus said to them, 'A prophet is despised only in his own country, among his own relations and inhis own house';	4 Jésus leur dit: "Le seul endroit où l’on ne reconnaît pas un prophète, c’est dans sa patrie, entre ses parents et dans sa famille!”
5 and he could work no miracle there, except that he cured a few sick people by laying his hands onthem.	5 Il ne put faire là aucun miracle, si l’on néglige quelques malades qu’il guérit par une imposition de mains.
6 He was amazed at their lack of faith. He made a tour round the vil ages, teaching.	6 Il s’étonnait de leur manque de foi. Jésus parcourait donc les villages à la ronde et il enseignait.
7 Then he summoned the Twelve and began to send them out in pairs, giving them authority overunclean spirits.	7 Il appela à lui les Douze et commença à les envoyer deux par deux; il leur donna autorité sur les esprits impurs.
8 And he instructed them to take nothing for the journey except a staff -- no bread, no haversack, nocoppers for their purses.	8 Il leur recommanda de ne rien prendre d’autre qu’un bâton pour la route; ni pain, ni sac, ni monnaie dans la ceinture.
9 They were to wear sandals but, he added, 'Don't take a spare tunic.'	9 “Seulement des sandales aux pieds, leur dit-il, et n’emportez pas deux tuniques.”
10 And he said to them, 'If you enter a house anywhere, stay there until you leave the district.	10 Il leur dit encore: "Quand une maison vous sera ouverte, restez-y jusqu’au moment de votre départ.
11 And if any place does not welcome you and people refuse to listen to you, as you walk away shake offthe dust under your feet as evidence to them.'	11 Si l’on ne vous reçoit pas, si l’on ne vous écoute pas, vous secouerez la poussière qui est sous vos pieds avant de partir, ce sera un avertissement.”
12 So they set off to proclaim repentance;	12 C’est ainsi qu’ils partirent pour appeler à la conversion.
13 and they cast out many devils, and anointed many sick people with oil and cured them.	13 Ils chassaient bien des démons et guérissaient de nombreux malades avec une onction d’huile.
14 King Herod had heard about him, since by now his name was wel known. Some were saying, 'Johnthe Baptist has risen from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.'	14 Le roi Hérode entendit parler de Jésus car son nom était maintenant connu. Certains disaient: "Jean-Baptiste est ressuscité d’entre les morts, aussi les forces surnaturelles agissent-elles en lui.”
15 Others said, 'He is Elijah,' others again, 'He is a prophet, like the prophets we used to have.'	15 D’autres disaient: "C’est Élie!” Et d’autres encore: "C’est un prophète, comme étaient les prophètes.”
16 But when Herod heard this he said, 'It is John whose head I cut off; he has risen from the dead.'	16 Mis au courant des faits, Hérode disait: "J’ai fait décapiter Jean, mais le voilà ressuscité.”
17 Now it was this same Herod who had sent to have John arrested, and had had him chained up inprison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife whom he had married.	17 Il faut savoir qu’Hérode avait fait arrêter Jean-Baptiste et le gardait en prison enchaîné, pour l’affaire d’Hérodiade, la femme de son frère Philippe qu’il avait épousée.
18 For John had told Herod, 'It is against the law for you to have your brother's wife.'	18 Car Jean disait à Hérode: "Tu n’as pas le droit d’avoir la femme de ton frère.”
19 As for Herodias, she was furious with him and wanted to kil him, but she was not able to do so,	19 Hérodiade lui en voulait terriblement; elle voulait le tuer, mais elle ne le pouvait pas,
20 because Herod was in awe of John, knowing him to be a good and upright man, and gave him hisprotection. When he had heard him speak he was greatly perplexed, and yet he liked to listen to him.	20 car Hérode respectait Jean: il savait que c’était un homme juste et droit et il le protégeait. Quand il l’écoutait il ne savait plus que faire, cependant il l’entendait volontiers.
21 An opportunity came on Herod's birthday when he gave a banquet for the nobles of his court, for hisarmy officers and for the leading figures in Galilee.	21 Un jour pourtant se présenta une occasion favorable. Hérode avait offert un festin à ses ministres, à ses officiers et aux notables de Galilée à l’occasion de son anniversaire.
22 When the daughter of this same Herodias came in and danced, she delighted Herod and his guests;so the king said to the girl, 'Ask me anything you like and I will give it you.'	22 La fille de cette Hérodiade entra pour danser et elle captiva Hérode comme ses invités. Le roi dit alors à la jeune fille: "Demande-moi ce que tu veux et je te le donnerai.”
23 And he swore her an oath, 'I wil give you anything you ask, even half my kingdom.'	23 Et il lui fait ce serment: "Demande-moi si tu veux la moitié de mon royaume, je te la donnerai.”
24 She went out and said to her mother, 'What shall I ask for?' She replied, 'The head of John theBaptist.'	24 Aussitôt la fille sort et dit à sa mère: "Qu’est-ce que je demande?” La mère répond: "La tête de Jean-Baptiste.”
25 The girl at once rushed back to the king and made her request, 'I want you to give me John theBaptist's head, immediately, on a dish.'	25 Vite elle revient auprès du roi et présente sa demande: "Je veux que tu me donnes tout de suite sur un plat la tête de Jean-Baptiste.”
26 The king was deeply distressed but, thinking of the oaths he had sworn and of his guests, he wasreluctant to break his word to her.	26 Le roi en est très contrarié, mais il a fait un serment et les invités du banquet en sont témoins, aussi ne veut-il pas lui refuser.
27 At once the king sent one of the bodyguard with orders to bring John's head.	27 Sur-le-champ il envoie un garde avec l’ordre d’apporter la tête de Jean, et le garde va le décapiter dans la prison.
28 The man went off and beheaded him in the prison; then he brought the head on a dish and gave it tothe girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.	28 Il rapporte sa tête sur un plat et la donne à la jeune fille, et la jeune fille la donne à sa mère.
29 When John's disciples heard about this, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.	29 Lorsque les disciples de Jean apprirent la chose, ils vinrent recueillir ses restes et les déposèrent dans une tombe.
30 The apostles rejoined Jesus and told him al they had done and taught.	30 Les apôtres se retrouvèrent autour de Jésus et lui rapportèrent tout ce qu’ils avaient fait et enseigné.
31 And he said to them, 'Come away to some lonely place al by yourselves and rest for a while'; for therewere so many coming and going that there was no time for them even to eat.	31 Il leur dit: "Venez donc à l’écart dans un lieu désert, vous vous reposerez un peu.” Car les gens allaient et venaient en si grand nombre qu’on n’avait même pas un instant pour manger.
32 So they went off in the boat to a lonely place where they could be by themselves.	32 Ils partent donc en barque pour s’isoler dans un lieu désert,
33 But people saw them going, and many recognised them; and from every town they al hurried to theplace on foot and reached it before them.	33 mais on les voit partir et beaucoup comprennent; de toutes les villes des gens accourent à pied et arrivent avant eux.
34 So as he stepped ashore he saw a large crowd; and he took pity on them because they were likesheep without a shepherd, and he set himself to teach them at some length.	34 Lorsque Jésus débarque, il voit beaucoup de monde et il se sent plein de compassion pour ces gens, car ils font penser à des brebis sans berger. Et il se met à les instruire longuement.
35 By now it was getting very late, and his disciples came up to him and said, 'This is a lonely place and itis getting very late,	35 Comme il se fait déjà tard, ses disciples s’approchent de lui et lui disent: "L’endroit est désert et l’heure est déjà passée.
36 so send them away, and they can go to the farms and villages round about, to buy themselvessomething to eat.'	36 Renvoie-les pour qu’ils aillent s’acheter de quoi manger dans les campagnes et les villages voisins.”
37 He replied, 'Give them something to eat yourselves.' They answered, 'Are we to go and spend twohundred denari on bread for them to eat?'	37 Jésus leur répond: "Donnez-leur vous-mêmes à manger.” Ils lui disent: "Nous voilà partis pour acheter 200 deniers de pain, et alors ils pourront manger!”
38 He asked, 'How many loaves have you? Go and see.' And when they had found out they said, 'Five,and two fish.'	38 Il leur dit: "Combien de pains avez-vous? Allez voir.” Ils vérifient et lui disent: "Cinq, avec deux poissons.”
39 Then he ordered them to get all the people to sit down in groups on the green grass,	39 Alors Jésus commande à tout ce monde de s’étendre par groupes sur l’herbe verte,
40 and they sat down on the ground in squares of hundreds and fifties.	40 et ils s’étendent par carrés de cent et de cinquante.
41 Then he took the five loaves and the two fish, raised his eyes to heaven and said the blessing; then hebroke the loaves and began handing them to his disciples to distribute among the people. He also shared out thetwo fish among them al .	41 Jésus a pris les cinq pains et les deux poissons; il lève les yeux vers le ciel et prononce la bénédiction, il rompt le pain et commence à en donner aux disciples pour qu’ils le servent. Il partage également les deux poissons pour tout ce monde.
42 They al ate as much as they wanted.	42 Tous mangèrent et furent rassasiés.
43 They col ected twelve basketfuls of scraps of bread and pieces of fish.	43 On ramassa même douze pleins paniers de morceaux de pain et de poissons.
44 Those who had eaten the loaves numbered five thousand men.	44 Il y avait pourtant là 5 000 hommes qui avaient mangé les pains.
45 And at once he made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side near Bethsaida,while he himself sent the crowd away.	45 Aussitôt Jésus obligea les disciples à monter dans la barque et à le précéder de l’autre côté, vers Bethsaïde, pendant qu’il renvoyait la foule.
46 After saying goodbye to them he went off into the hills to pray.	46 Après les avoir congédiés, il s’en alla dans la montagne pour prier.
47 When evening came, the boat was far out on the sea, and he was alone on the land.	47 La nuit était tombée, la barque était au milieu de la mer, et lui seul à terre.
48 He could see that they were hard pressed in their rowing, for the wind was against them; and aboutthe fourth watch of the night he came towards them, walking on the sea. He was going to pass them by,	48 Il put voir qu’ils se fatiguaient à ramer, car le vent leur était contraire, et peu avant le lever du jour il vint vers eux: il marchait sur les eaux et semblait vouloir les dépasser.
49 but when they saw him walking on the sea they thought it was a ghost and cried out;	49 Le voyant marcher sur la mer, ils crurent que c’était un fantôme et ils se mirent à crier,
50 for they had all seen him and were terrified. But at once he spoke to them and said, 'Courage! It's me!Don't be afraid.'	50 car tous étaient effrayés en le voyant ainsi. Lui leur parla aussitôt et leur dit: "Remettez-vous, c’est moi, ne craignez pas!”
51 Then he got into the boat with them and the wind dropped. They were utterly and completelydumbfounded,	51 Il monta auprès d’eux dans la barque et le vent tomba. Ils en étaient totalement hors d’eux-mêmes,
52 because they had not seen what the miracle of the loaves meant; their minds were closed.	52 car ils n’avaient pas encore réalisé ce qui s’était passé pour les pains: leur esprit était totalement fermé.
53 Having made the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored there.	53 Ils traversèrent de façon à atteindre la rive de Génésaret: c’est là qu’ils accostèrent.
54 When they disembarked people at once recognised him,	54 À peine étaient-ils descendus de la barque qu’on le reconnut
55 and started hurrying al through the countryside and brought the sick on stretchers to wherever theyheard he was.	55 et les gens se mirent en branle dans toute la région. On transportait les malades sur des brancards là où l’on apprenait qu’il était;
56 And wherever he went, to vil age or town or farm, they laid down the sick in the open spaces, begginghim to let them touch even the fringe of his cloak. And al those who touched him were saved.	56 partout où Jésus passait, que ce soient les villages, les villes, ou les campagnes, on déposait les infirmes sur les places publiques. On le suppliait de pouvoir seulement toucher la frange de son vêtement, et tous ceux qui la touchaient étaient sauvés.
