1 Leaving that district, he went to his home town, and his disciples accompanied him.	1 ויצא משם ויבא אל ארצו וילכו אחריו תלמידיו
2 With the coming of the Sabbath he began teaching in the synagogue, and most of them wereastonished when they heard him. They said, 'Where did the man get al this? What is this wisdom that has beengranted him, and these miracles that are worked through him?	2 וביום השבת החל ללמד בבית הכנסת וישמעו רבים וישתוממו לאמר מאין לזה כאלה ומה היא החכמה הנתונה לו עד אשר נעשו גבורות כאלה על ידיו
3 This is the carpenter, surely, the son of Mary, the brother of James and Joset and Jude and Simon? Hissisters, too, are they not here with us?' And they would not accept him.	3 הלא זה הוא החרש בן מרים ואחי יעקב ויוסי ויהודה ושמעון והלא אחיותיו אתנו פה ויהי להם למכשול
4 And Jesus said to them, 'A prophet is despised only in his own country, among his own relations and inhis own house';	4 ויאמר אליהם ישוע אין הנביא נקלה כי אם בארצו ובין קרוביו ובביתו
5 and he could work no miracle there, except that he cured a few sick people by laying his hands onthem.	5 ולא יכל לעשות שם פלא רק על חלשים מעטים שם את ידיו וירפאם
6 He was amazed at their lack of faith. He made a tour round the vil ages, teaching.	6 ויתמה על חסרון אמונתם ויסב בכפרים סבוב ולמד
7 Then he summoned the Twelve and began to send them out in pairs, giving them authority overunclean spirits.	7 ויקרא אל שנים העשר ויחל לשלח אותם שנים שנים ויתן להם שלטן על רוחות הטמאה
8 And he instructed them to take nothing for the journey except a staff -- no bread, no haversack, nocoppers for their purses.	8 ויצו אותם אשר לא ישאו מאומה לדרך זולתי מקל לבדו לא תרמיל ולא לחם ולא נחשת בחגורה
9 They were to wear sandals but, he added, 'Don't take a spare tunic.'	9 רק להיות נעולי סנדל ושתי כתנות לא ילבשו
10 And he said to them, 'If you enter a house anywhere, stay there until you leave the district.	10 ויאמר אליהם במקום אשר תבאו בית איש שבו בו עד כי תצאו משם
11 And if any place does not welcome you and people refuse to listen to you, as you walk away shake offthe dust under your feet as evidence to them.'	11 וכל אשר לא יקבלו אתכם ולא ישמעו אליכם צאו משם ונערו את עפר כפות רגליכם לעדות להם אמן אני אמר לכם לסדם ולעמרה יקל ביום הדין מן העיר ההיא
12 So they set off to proclaim repentance;	12 ויצאו ויקראו לשוב בתשובה
13 and they cast out many devils, and anointed many sick people with oil and cured them.	13 ויגרשו שדים רבים ויסוכו בשמן חלשים רבים וירפאום
14 King Herod had heard about him, since by now his name was wel known. Some were saying, 'Johnthe Baptist has risen from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.'	14 וישמע עליו המלך הורדוס כי נודע שמו ויאמר יוחנן הטובל קם מן המתים ועל כן פעלות בו הגבורות
15 Others said, 'He is Elijah,' others again, 'He is a prophet, like the prophets we used to have.'	15 ואחרים אמרו כי הוא אליהו ואחרים אמרו כי נביא הוא או כאחד הנביאים
16 But when Herod heard this he said, 'It is John whose head I cut off; he has risen from the dead.'	16 וישמע הורדוס ויאמר יוחנן אשר אנכי נשאתי את ראשו מעליו הוא קם מן המתים
17 Now it was this same Herod who had sent to have John arrested, and had had him chained up inprison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife whom he had married.	17 כי הוא הורודס שלח לתפש את יוחנן ויאסרהו בבית הסהר בגלל הורודיה אשת פילפוס אחיו כי אתה לקח לו לאשה
18 For John had told Herod, 'It is against the law for you to have your brother's wife.'	18 יען אשר אמר יוחנן אל הורדוס אשת אחיך איננה מתרת לך
19 As for Herodias, she was furious with him and wanted to kil him, but she was not able to do so,	19 ותשטם אותו הורודיה ותבקש המיתו ולא יכלה
20 because Herod was in awe of John, knowing him to be a good and upright man, and gave him hisprotection. When he had heard him speak he was greatly perplexed, and yet he liked to listen to him.	20 כי הורדוס ירא את יוחנן בדעתו כי הוא איש צדיק וקדוש ויגן בעדו והרבה עשה בשמעו אליו ויאהב לשמע אתו
21 An opportunity came on Herod's birthday when he gave a banquet for the nobles of his court, for hisarmy officers and for the leading figures in Galilee.	21 ויבא היום המכשר כי הורדוס ביום הלדת אתו עשה משתה לגדוליו ולשרי האלפים ולראשי הגליל
22 When the daughter of this same Herodias came in and danced, she delighted Herod and his guests;so the king said to the girl, 'Ask me anything you like and I will give it you.'	22 ותבא בת הורודיה ותרקד ותיטב בעיני הורדוס ובעיני המסבים עמו ויאמר המלך אל הנערה שאלי ממני את אשר תחפצי ואתן לך
23 And he swore her an oath, 'I wil give you anything you ask, even half my kingdom.'	23 וישבע לה לאמר כל אשר תשאלי ממני אתן לך עד חצי מלכותי
24 She went out and said to her mother, 'What shall I ask for?' She replied, 'The head of John theBaptist.'	24 ותצא ותאמר לאמה מה אשאל ותאמר את ראש יוחנן המטביל
25 The girl at once rushed back to the king and made her request, 'I want you to give me John theBaptist's head, immediately, on a dish.'	25 ותמהר מאד לבוא אל המלך ותשאל לאמר רצוני אשר תתן לי עתה בקערה את ראש יוחנן המטביל
26 The king was deeply distressed but, thinking of the oaths he had sworn and of his guests, he wasreluctant to break his word to her.	26 ויתעצב המלך מאד אך בעבור השבועה והמסבים עמו לא רצה להשיב פניה
27 At once the king sent one of the bodyguard with orders to bring John's head.	27 ומיד שלח המלך אחד הטבחים ויצוהו להביא את ראשו
28 The man went off and beheaded him in the prison; then he brought the head on a dish and gave it tothe girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.	28 וילך ויכרת את ראשו בבית הסהר ויביאהו בקערה ויתנהו לנערה והנערה נתנה אתו אל אמה
29 When John's disciples heard about this, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.	29 וישמעו תלמידיו ויבאו וישאו את גויתו וישימוה בקבר
30 The apostles rejoined Jesus and told him al they had done and taught.	30 ויקהלו השליחים אל ישוע ויגידו לו את כל אשר עשו ואת אשר למדו
31 And he said to them, 'Come away to some lonely place al by yourselves and rest for a while'; for therewere so many coming and going that there was no time for them even to eat.	31 ויאמר אליהם באו אתם לבדד אל מקום חרבה ונוחו מעט כי רבים היו הבאים והיצאים עד לאין עת להם לאכול
32 So they went off in the boat to a lonely place where they could be by themselves.	32 וילכו משם באניה אל מקום חרבה לבדד
33 But people saw them going, and many recognised them; and from every town they al hurried to theplace on foot and reached it before them.	33 וההמון ראה אותם יצאים ויכירהו רבים וירוצו שמה ברגליהם מכל הערים ויעברו אותם ויאספו אליו
34 So as he stepped ashore he saw a large crowd; and he took pity on them because they were likesheep without a shepherd, and he set himself to teach them at some length.	34 ויצא וירא המון עם רב ויהמו מעיו עליהם כי היו כצאן אשר אין להם רעה ויחל ללמד אותם דברים הרבה
35 By now it was getting very late, and his disciples came up to him and said, 'This is a lonely place and itis getting very late,	35 ויהי כאשר רפה היום לערוב ויגשו אליו תלמידיו לאמר הנה המקום חרב והיום רד מאד
36 so send them away, and they can go to the farms and villages round about, to buy themselvessomething to eat.'	36 שלח אותם וילכו אל החצרים והכפרים מסביב לקנות להם לחם כי אין להם מה לאכל
37 He replied, 'Give them something to eat yourselves.' They answered, 'Are we to go and spend twohundred denari on bread for them to eat?'	37 ויען ויאמר אליהם תנו אתם להם לאכלה ויאמרו אליו הנלך לקנות לחם במאתים דינר ונתן להם לאכלה
38 He asked, 'How many loaves have you? Go and see.' And when they had found out they said, 'Five,and two fish.'	38 ויאמר אליהם כמה ככרות לחם יש לכם לכו וראו וידעו ויאמרו חמש ושני דגים
39 Then he ordered them to get all the people to sit down in groups on the green grass,	39 ויצו אותם לשבת כלם חברה חברה לבדה על ירק הדשא
40 and they sat down on the ground in squares of hundreds and fifties.	40 וישבו להם שורות שורות למאות ולחמשים
41 Then he took the five loaves and the two fish, raised his eyes to heaven and said the blessing; then hebroke the loaves and began handing them to his disciples to distribute among the people. He also shared out thetwo fish among them al .	41 ויקח את חמשת ככרות הלחם ואת שני הדגים וישא עיניו השמימה ויברך ויפרס את הלחם ויתן לתלמידיו לשום לפניהם ואת שני הדגים חלק לכלם
42 They al ate as much as they wanted.	42 ויאכלו כלם וישבעו
43 They col ected twelve basketfuls of scraps of bread and pieces of fish.	43 וישאו מן הפתותים מלוא סלים שנים עשר וגם מן הדגים
44 Those who had eaten the loaves numbered five thousand men.	44 והאכלים מן הלחם היו כחמשת אלפי איש
45 And at once he made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side near Bethsaida,while he himself sent the crowd away.	45 ואחרי כן האיץ בתלמידיו לרדת באניה ולעבור לפניו אל עבר הים אל בית צידה עד שלחו את העם
46 After saying goodbye to them he went off into the hills to pray.	46 ויהי אחר שלחו אתם ויעל ההרה להתפלל
47 When evening came, the boat was far out on the sea, and he was alone on the land.	47 ויהי ערב והאניה באה בתוך הים והוא לבדו ביבשה
48 He could see that they were hard pressed in their rowing, for the wind was against them; and aboutthe fourth watch of the night he came towards them, walking on the sea. He was going to pass them by,	48 וירא אותם מתעמלים בשוטם כי הרוח לנגדם ויהי כעת האשמרת הרביעית ויבא אליהם מתהלך על פני הים ויואל לעבור לפניהם
49 but when they saw him walking on the sea they thought it was a ghost and cried out;	49 והם בראתם אתו מתהלך על פני הים חשבו כי מראה רוח הוא ויצעקו
50 for they had all seen him and were terrified. But at once he spoke to them and said, 'Courage! It's me!Don't be afraid.'	50 כי כלם ראוהו ויבהלו אז דבר אתם ויאמר אליהם חזקו כי אני הוא אל תיראו
51 Then he got into the boat with them and the wind dropped. They were utterly and completelydumbfounded,	51 וירד אליהם אל האניה והרוח שככה וישתוממו עוד יותר בלבבם ויתמהו
52 because they had not seen what the miracle of the loaves meant; their minds were closed.	52 כי לא השכילו בדבר ככרות הלחם מפני טמטום לבבם
53 Having made the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored there.	53 ויעברו את הים ויבאו ארצה גניסר ויקרבו אל היבשה
54 When they disembarked people at once recognised him,	54 ויהי כצאתם מן האניה אז הכירהו
55 and started hurrying al through the countryside and brought the sick on stretchers to wherever theyheard he was.	55 וירוצו בכל סביבותיהם ויחלו לשאת את החולים במשכבות אל כל מקום אשר שמעו כי שם הוא
56 And wherever he went, to vil age or town or farm, they laid down the sick in the open spaces, begginghim to let them touch even the fringe of his cloak. And al those who touched him were saved.	56 ובכל מקום אשר יבא אל הכפרים או הערים ואל השדות שם שמו את החולים בחוצות ויתחננו לו כי יגעו רק בציצת בגדו והיה כל אשר נגעו ונושעו
