1 Leaving that district, he went to his home town, and his disciples accompanied him.	1 Et egressus est inde et venit in patriam suam, et sequuntur il lumdiscipuli sui.
2 With the coming of the Sabbath he began teaching in the synagogue, and most of them wereastonished when they heard him. They said, 'Where did the man get al this? What is this wisdom that has beengranted him, and these miracles that are worked through him?	2 Et facto sabbato, coepit in synagoga docere; et multi audientesadmirabantur dicentes: “ Unde huic haec, et quae est sapientia, quae data estilli, et virtutes tales, quae per manus eius efficiuntur?
3 This is the carpenter, surely, the son of Mary, the brother of James and Joset and Jude and Simon? Hissisters, too, are they not here with us?' And they would not accept him.	3 Nonne iste estfaber, filius Mariae et frater Iacobi et Iosetis et Iudae et Simonis? Et nonnesorores eius hic nobiscum sunt? ”. Et scandalizabantur in illo.
4 And Jesus said to them, 'A prophet is despised only in his own country, among his own relations and inhis own house';	4 Et dicebateis Iesus: “ Non est propheta sine honore nisi in patria sua et in cognationesua et in domo sua ”.
5 and he could work no miracle there, except that he cured a few sick people by laying his hands onthem.	5 Et non poterat ibi virtutem ullam facere, nisi paucosinfirmos impositis manibus curavit;
6 He was amazed at their lack of faith. He made a tour round the vil ages, teaching.	6 et mirabatur propter incredulitatem eorum. Et circumibat castella in circuitu docens.
7 Then he summoned the Twelve and began to send them out in pairs, giving them authority overunclean spirits.	7 Et convocat Duodecim et coepit eos mittere binos et dabat illis potestatem inspiritus immundos;
8 And he instructed them to take nothing for the journey except a staff -- no bread, no haversack, nocoppers for their purses.	8 et praecepit eis, ne quid tollerent in via nisi virgamtantum: non panem, non peram neque in zona aes,
9 They were to wear sandals but, he added, 'Don't take a spare tunic.'	9 sed ut calcearentur sandaliiset ne induerentur duabus tunicis.
10 And he said to them, 'If you enter a house anywhere, stay there until you leave the district.	10 Et dicebat eis: “ Quocumque introieritisin domum, illic manete, donec exeatis inde.
11 And if any place does not welcome you and people refuse to listen to you, as you walk away shake offthe dust under your feet as evidence to them.'	11 Et quicumque locus non receperitvos nec audierint vos, exeuntes inde excutite pulverem de pedibus vestris intestimonium illis ”.
12 So they set off to proclaim repentance;	12 Et exeuntes praedicaverunt, ut paenitentiam agerent;
13 and they cast out many devils, and anointed many sick people with oil and cured them.	13 et daemonia multa eiciebant et ungebant oleo multos aegrotos et sanabant.
14 King Herod had heard about him, since by now his name was wel known. Some were saying, 'Johnthe Baptist has risen from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.'	14 Et audivit Herodes rex; manifestum enim factum est nomen eius. Et dicebant:“ Ioannes Baptista resurrexit a mortuis, et propterea inoperantur virtutes inillo ”.
15 Others said, 'He is Elijah,' others again, 'He is a prophet, like the prophets we used to have.'	15 Alii autem dicebant: “ Elias est ”. Alii vero dicebant: “Propheta est, quasi unus ex prophetis ”.
16 But when Herod heard this he said, 'It is John whose head I cut off; he has risen from the dead.'	16 Quo audito, Herodes aiebat: “Quem ego decollavi Ioannem, hic resurrexit! ”.
17 Now it was this same Herod who had sent to have John arrested, and had had him chained up inprison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife whom he had married.	17 Ipse enim Herodes misit ac tenuit Ioannem et vinxit eum in carcere propterHerodiadem uxorem Philippi fratris sui, quia duxerat eam.
18 For John had told Herod, 'It is against the law for you to have your brother's wife.'	18 Dicebat enimIoannes Herodi: “ Non licet tibi habere uxorem fratris tui ”.
19 As for Herodias, she was furious with him and wanted to kil him, but she was not able to do so,	19 Herodiasautem insidiabatur illi et volebat occidere eum nec poterat:
20 because Herod was in awe of John, knowing him to be a good and upright man, and gave him hisprotection. When he had heard him speak he was greatly perplexed, and yet he liked to listen to him.	20 Herodes enimmetuebat Ioannem, sciens eum virum iustum et sanctum, et custodiebat eum, et,audito eo, multum haesitabat et libenter eum audiebat.
21 An opportunity came on Herod's birthday when he gave a banquet for the nobles of his court, for hisarmy officers and for the leading figures in Galilee.	21 Et cum dies opportunusaccidisset, quo Herodes natali suo cenam fecit principibus suis et tribunis etprimis Galilaeae,
22 When the daughter of this same Herodias came in and danced, she delighted Herod and his guests;so the king said to the girl, 'Ask me anything you like and I will give it you.'	22 cumque introisset filia ipsius Herodiadis et saltasset,placuit Herodi simulque recumbentibus. Rex ait puellae: “ Pete a me, quod vis,et dabo tibi ”.
23 And he swore her an oath, 'I wil give you anything you ask, even half my kingdom.'	23 Et iuravit illi multum: “ Quidquid petieris a me, dabotibi, usque ad dimidium regni mei ”.
24 She went out and said to her mother, 'What shall I ask for?' She replied, 'The head of John theBaptist.'	24 Quae cum exisset, dixit matri suae:“ Quid petam? ”. At illa dixit: “ Caput Ioannis Baptistae ”.
25 The girl at once rushed back to the king and made her request, 'I want you to give me John theBaptist's head, immediately, on a dish.'	25 Cumqueintroisset statim cum festinatione ad regem, petivit dicens: “ Volo utprotinus des mihi in disco caput Ioannis Baptistae ”.
26 The king was deeply distressed but, thinking of the oaths he had sworn and of his guests, he wasreluctant to break his word to her.	26 Et contristatus rex,propter iusiurandum et propter recumbentes noluit eam decipere;
27 At once the king sent one of the bodyguard with orders to bring John's head.	27 et statimmisso spiculatore rex praecepit afferri caput eius. Et abiens decollavit eum incarcere
28 The man went off and beheaded him in the prison; then he brought the head on a dish and gave it tothe girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.	28 et attulit caput eius in disco; et dedit illud puellae, et puelladedit illud matri suae.
29 When John's disciples heard about this, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.	29 Quo audito, discipuli eius venerunt et tuleruntcorpus eius et posuerunt illud in monumento.
30 The apostles rejoined Jesus and told him al they had done and taught.	30 Et convenientes apostoli ad Iesum renuntiaverunt illi omnia, quae egerant etdocuerant.
31 And he said to them, 'Come away to some lonely place al by yourselves and rest for a while'; for therewere so many coming and going that there was no time for them even to eat.	31 Et ait illis: “ Venite vos ipsi seorsum in desertum locum etrequiescite pusillum ”. Erant enim, qui veniebant et redibant, multi, et necmanducandi spatium habebant.
32 So they went off in the boat to a lonely place where they could be by themselves.	32 Et abierunt in navi in desertum locum seorsum.
33 But people saw them going, and many recognised them; and from every town they al hurried to theplace on foot and reached it before them.	33 Et viderunt eos abeuntes et cognoverunt multi; et pedestre de omnibuscivitatibus concurrerunt illuc et praevenerunt eos.
34 So as he stepped ashore he saw a large crowd; and he took pity on them because they were likesheep without a shepherd, and he set himself to teach them at some length.	34 Et exiens vidit multamturbam et misertus est super eos, quia erant sicut oves non habentes pastorem,et coepit docere illos multa.
35 By now it was getting very late, and his disciples came up to him and said, 'This is a lonely place and itis getting very late,	35 Et cum iam hora multa facta esset, accesseruntdiscipuli eius dicentes: “ Desertus est locus hic, et hora iam est multa;
36 so send them away, and they can go to the farms and villages round about, to buy themselvessomething to eat.'	36 dimitte illos, ut euntes in villas et vicos in circuitu emant sibi, quodmanducent ”.
37 He replied, 'Give them something to eat yourselves.' They answered, 'Are we to go and spend twohundred denari on bread for them to eat?'	37 Respondens autem ait illis: “ Date illis vos manducare ”.Et dicunt ei: “ Euntes emamus denariis ducentis panes et dabimus eismanducare? ”.
38 He asked, 'How many loaves have you? Go and see.' And when they had found out they said, 'Five,and two fish.'	38 Et dicit eis: “ Quot panes habetis? Ite, videte ”. Et cumcognovissent, dicunt: “ Quinque et duos pisces ”.
39 Then he ordered them to get all the people to sit down in groups on the green grass,	39 Et praecepit illis, utaccumbere facerent omnes secundum contubernia super viride fenum.
40 and they sat down on the ground in squares of hundreds and fifties.	40 Etdiscubuerunt secundum areas per centenos et per quinquagenos.
41 Then he took the five loaves and the two fish, raised his eyes to heaven and said the blessing; then hebroke the loaves and began handing them to his disciples to distribute among the people. He also shared out thetwo fish among them al .	41 Et acceptisquinque panibus et duobus piscibus, intuens in caelum benedixit et fregit paneset dabat discipulis suis, ut ponerent ante eos; et duos pisces divisit omnibus.
42 They al ate as much as they wanted.	42 Et manducaverunt omnes et saturati sunt;
43 They col ected twelve basketfuls of scraps of bread and pieces of fish.	43 et sustulerunt fragmenta duodecimcophinos plenos, et de piscibus.
44 Those who had eaten the loaves numbered five thousand men.	44 Et erant, qui manducaverunt panes, quinquemilia virorum.
45 And at once he made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side near Bethsaida,while he himself sent the crowd away.	45 Et statim coegit discipulos suos ascendere navem, ut praecederent transfretum ad Bethsaidam, dum ipse dimitteret populum.
46 After saying goodbye to them he went off into the hills to pray.	46 Et cum dimisisset eos,abiit in montem orare.
47 When evening came, the boat was far out on the sea, and he was alone on the land.	47 Et cum sero factum esset, erat navis in medio mari, etipse solus in terra.
48 He could see that they were hard pressed in their rowing, for the wind was against them; and aboutthe fourth watch of the night he came towards them, walking on the sea. He was going to pass them by,	48 Et videns eos laborantes in remigando, erat enim ventuscontrarius eis, circa quartam vigiliam noctis venit ad eos ambulans super mareet volebat praeterire eos.
49 but when they saw him walking on the sea they thought it was a ghost and cried out;	49 At illi, ut viderunt eum ambulantem super mare,putaverunt phantasma esse et exclamaverunt;
50 for they had all seen him and were terrified. But at once he spoke to them and said, 'Courage! It's me!Don't be afraid.'	50 omnes enim eum viderunt etconturbati sunt. Statim autem locutus est cum eis et dicit illis: “ Confidite,ego sum; nolite timere! ”.
51 Then he got into the boat with them and the wind dropped. They were utterly and completelydumbfounded,	51 Et ascendit ad illos in navem, et cessavitventus. Et valde nimis intra se stupebant;
52 because they had not seen what the miracle of the loaves meant; their minds were closed.	52 non enim intellexerant de panibus,sed erat cor illorum obcaecatum.
53 Having made the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored there.	53 Et cum transfretassent in terram, pervenerunt Gennesaret et applicuerunt.
54 When they disembarked people at once recognised him,	54 Cumque egressi essent de navi, continuo cognoverunt eum
55 and started hurrying al through the countryside and brought the sick on stretchers to wherever theyheard he was.	55 et percurrentesuniversam regionem illam coeperunt in grabatis eos, qui se male habebant,circumferre, ubi audiebant eum esse.
56 And wherever he went, to vil age or town or farm, they laid down the sick in the open spaces, begginghim to let them touch even the fringe of his cloak. And al those who touched him were saved.	56 Et quocumque introibat in vicos aut incivitates vel in villas, in plateis ponebant infirmos; et deprecabantur eum, utvel fimbriam vestimenti eius tangerent; et, quotquot tangebant eum, salvifiebant.
