1 Leaving that district, he went to his home town, and his disciples accompanied him.	1 - Partito di là, venne nella sua patria e i suoi discepoli lo seguirono.
2 With the coming of the Sabbath he began teaching in the synagogue, and most of them wereastonished when they heard him. They said, 'Where did the man get al this? What is this wisdom that has beengranted him, and these miracles that are worked through him?	2 Giunto il sabato, cominciò a insegnare nella sinagoga e molti degli ascoltatori restavan sbigottiti di tanta dottrina, e si domandavano: «Donde sa costui queste cose? E che sapienza è questa che gli è data e che sorta di portenti son compiuti dalle sue mani?
3 This is the carpenter, surely, the son of Mary, the brother of James and Joset and Jude and Simon? Hissisters, too, are they not here with us?' And they would not accept him.	3 Non è questi il falegname, il figlio di Maria, il fratello di Giacomo, di Giuseppe, di Giuda e di Simone? E le sue sorelle non sono qui tra noi?». E si scandalizzavan di lui.
4 And Jesus said to them, 'A prophet is despised only in his own country, among his own relations and inhis own house';	4 Ma Gesù diceva loro: «Un profeta non è spregiato che nella sua patria, nella sua casa e tra i suoi parenti».
5 and he could work no miracle there, except that he cured a few sick people by laying his hands onthem.	5 E qui non potè fare alcun miracolo, salvo che guarire alcuni pochi infermi, imponendo loro le mani.
6 He was amazed at their lack of faith. He made a tour round the vil ages, teaching.	6 E si meravigliava della loro incredulità. Gesù andava intorno per i villaggi circostanti, insegnando.
7 Then he summoned the Twelve and began to send them out in pairs, giving them authority overunclean spirits.	7 Allora chiamò i Dodici e cominciò a mandarli a due a due dando loro potestà sopra gli spiriti immondi.
8 And he instructed them to take nothing for the journey except a staff -- no bread, no haversack, nocoppers for their purses.	8 E comandò loro di non prender nulla per il viaggio, tranne il solo bastone; non bisaccia, non pane, non denaro nella cintura;
9 They were to wear sandals but, he added, 'Don't take a spare tunic.'	9 ma calzati i sandali, non portassero due tuniche.
10 And he said to them, 'If you enter a house anywhere, stay there until you leave the district.	10 E diceva loro: «In qualunque case entrerete, trattenetevi, in essa, finchè non partiate di là;
11 And if any place does not welcome you and people refuse to listen to you, as you walk away shake offthe dust under your feet as evidence to them.'	11 e se in qualche luogo non vi ricevono e non vi ascoltano, uscite di là e scotetevi dai piedi la polvere in testimonianza contro di loro».
12 So they set off to proclaim repentance;	12 Essi adunque partiti, predicavano perchè si facesse penitenza;
13 and they cast out many devils, and anointed many sick people with oil and cured them.	13 scacciavano molti demoni e ungevano con olio molti infermi e li guarivano.
14 King Herod had heard about him, since by now his name was wel known. Some were saying, 'Johnthe Baptist has risen from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.'	14 Il re Erode udì parlare di Gesù poichè si era sparsa la sua fama e diceva: «Giovanni Battista è risorto dai morti e perciò per mezzo di lui si operano meraviglie».
15 Others said, 'He is Elijah,' others again, 'He is a prophet, like the prophets we used to have.'	15 Altri invece dicevano: «È Elia», e altri : «È un profeta simile a uno degli antichi profeti».
16 But when Herod heard this he said, 'It is John whose head I cut off; he has risen from the dead.'	16 Erode però, udite queste cose disse: «Questi è quel Giovanni che io ho fatto decapitare e che è risorto».
17 Now it was this same Herod who had sent to have John arrested, and had had him chained up inprison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife whom he had married.	17 Erode infatti aveva fatto arrestare Giovanni e l'aveva imprigionato per causa d'Erodiade, moglie di Filippo suo fratello, ch'egli s'era presa in moglie
18 For John had told Herod, 'It is against the law for you to have your brother's wife.'	18 e per cui Giovanni diceva a Erode: «Non ti è lecito tenere la moglie di tuo fratello!».
19 As for Herodias, she was furious with him and wanted to kil him, but she was not able to do so,	19 Erodiade gli tendeva insidie e lo voleva ucciso, ma non poteva,
20 because Herod was in awe of John, knowing him to be a good and upright man, and gave him hisprotection. When he had heard him speak he was greatly perplexed, and yet he liked to listen to him.	20 perchè Erode aveva paura di Giovanni, sapendolo uomo giusto e santo e lo teneva da conto, risparmiandolo alla morte; faceva molte cose dopo consigliatosi con lui, e volentieri lo ascoltava.
21 An opportunity came on Herod's birthday when he gave a banquet for the nobles of his court, for hisarmy officers and for the leading figures in Galilee.	21 Ma si presentò l'occasione buona. Nel suo giorno natalizio, Erode fece un convito ai grandi della corte, ai capitani e ai primi della Galilea.
22 When the daughter of this same Herodias came in and danced, she delighted Herod and his guests;so the king said to the girl, 'Ask me anything you like and I will give it you.'	22 Entrata la figlia della stessa Erodiade e avendo danzato ed essendo piaciuta a Erode e ai convitati, il re disse alla fanciulla: «Chiedimi quello che vuoi e io te lo darò».
23 And he swore her an oath, 'I wil give you anything you ask, even half my kingdom.'	23 E le giurò: «quel che mi chiederai, te lo darò; fosse pure la metà del mio regno».
24 She went out and said to her mother, 'What shall I ask for?' She replied, 'The head of John theBaptist.'	24 Ella, uscita, domandò a sua madre: «Cosa chiederò?». E quella rispose: «La testa di Giovanni Battista».
25 The girl at once rushed back to the king and made her request, 'I want you to give me John theBaptist's head, immediately, on a dish.'	25 Rientrata subito frettolosamente dal re, la fanciulla gli espresse il suo desiderio, dicendo: «Voglio che tu mi dia subito, su di un bacile, la testa di Giovanni Battista».
26 The king was deeply distressed but, thinking of the oaths he had sworn and of his guests, he wasreluctant to break his word to her.	26 Il re fu contristato fortemente: ma in vista del giuramento fatto e dei commensali, non volle disgustarla
27 At once the king sent one of the bodyguard with orders to bring John's head.	27 e spedì un carnefice con l'ordine di portargli la testa di Giovanni, e quegli lo decapitò in prigione,
28 The man went off and beheaded him in the prison; then he brought the head on a dish and gave it tothe girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.	28 e ne portò la testa in un bacile e la dette alla fanciulla e questa alla madre.
29 When John's disciples heard about this, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.	29 I discepoli di Giovanni, saputo ciò, andarono a prenderne il corpo e lo deposero in un sepolcro.
30 The apostles rejoined Jesus and told him al they had done and taught.	30 Tornati gli Apostoli da Gesù, gli riferirono tutto ciò che avevano fatto e insegnato,
31 And he said to them, 'Come away to some lonely place al by yourselves and rest for a while'; for therewere so many coming and going that there was no time for them even to eat.	31 ed egli disse loro: «Venitevene in disparte, in un luogo solitario e riposatevi un poco». Giacchè, c'era un andare e venire che essi non avevano neppure tempo di mangiare.
32 So they went off in the boat to a lonely place where they could be by themselves.	32 S'imbarcarono quindi e se ne andarono in un luogo solitario e deserto.
33 But people saw them going, and many recognised them; and from every town they al hurried to theplace on foot and reached it before them.	33 Ora molti li videro partire e lo notarono e da tutte le città accorsero là a piedi e li prevennero.
34 So as he stepped ashore he saw a large crowd; and he took pity on them because they were likesheep without a shepherd, and he set himself to teach them at some length.	34 Quando Gesù scese dalla barca e vide gran folla, ne ebbe compassione, perchè erano come pecore senza pastore, e si mise a insegnar loro molte cose.
35 By now it was getting very late, and his disciples came up to him and said, 'This is a lonely place and itis getting very late,	35 Siccome si era fatto tardi, i discepoli gli s'accostaron per dirgli: «Questo luogo è deserto e l'ora è tarda;
36 so send them away, and they can go to the farms and villages round about, to buy themselvessomething to eat.'	36 congedali dunque affinchè andando per le campagne e i villaggi vicini si comperino qualcosa da mangiare».
37 He replied, 'Give them something to eat yourselves.' They answered, 'Are we to go and spend twohundred denari on bread for them to eat?'	37 Ma egli rispose: «Date voi da mangiare a loro!». Ed essi a lui: «Ce ne andremo a comperare per duecento danari di pane e daremo da mangiare».
38 He asked, 'How many loaves have you? Go and see.' And when they had found out they said, 'Five,and two fish.'	38 Ed egli domandò a loro: «Quanti pani avete? Andate a vedere». Dopo essersene accertati, risposero: «Cinque e due pesci!».
39 Then he ordered them to get all the people to sit down in groups on the green grass,	39 Allora, egli ordinò di far sedere tutte le persone a gruppetti sull'erba verde.
40 and they sat down on the ground in squares of hundreds and fifties.	40 E si accomodarono a gruppi di cento e di cinquanta.
41 Then he took the five loaves and the two fish, raised his eyes to heaven and said the blessing; then hebroke the loaves and began handing them to his disciples to distribute among the people. He also shared out thetwo fish among them al .	41 Presi allora i cinque pani e i due pesci, e alzati gli occhi al cielo, benedisse e spezzò i pani e li diede ai discepoli perchè li distribuissero alla gente; divise poi fra tutti i due pesci.
42 They al ate as much as they wanted.	42 Tutti mangiarono e si saziarono,
43 They col ected twelve basketfuls of scraps of bread and pieces of fish.	43 e furono raccolti dodici panieri pieni di avanzi di pane e di pesci.
44 Those who had eaten the loaves numbered five thousand men.	44 Ora quelli che avevano mangiato erano cinquemila uomini.
45 And at once he made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side near Bethsaida,while he himself sent the crowd away.	45 Subito dopo obbligò i discepoli a montare in barca e precederlo sull'altra riva del lago verso Betsaida, mentre egli congedava il popolo.
46 After saying goodbye to them he went off into the hills to pray.	46 Dopo averlo fatto, se ne andò sul monte a pregare.
47 When evening came, the boat was far out on the sea, and he was alone on the land.	47 Giunta la sera, la barca era in mezzo al mare ed egli era solo a terra.
48 He could see that they were hard pressed in their rowing, for the wind was against them; and aboutthe fourth watch of the night he came towards them, walking on the sea. He was going to pass them by,	48 Vedendo ch'essi s'affannavano a remare, perchè avevano il vento contrario, verso la quarta vigilia della notte andò a loro, camminando sul mare; e voleva oltrepassarli.
49 but when they saw him walking on the sea they thought it was a ghost and cried out;	49 Ma essi vistolo camminare sul mare, s'immaginarono che fosse un fantasma e si misero a gridare;
50 for they had all seen him and were terrified. But at once he spoke to them and said, 'Courage! It's me!Don't be afraid.'	50 perchè tutti lo videro e ne furono spaventati. Ma egli rivolse subito loro la parola dicendo: «Fatevi animo, sono io; non abbiate paura!».
51 Then he got into the boat with them and the wind dropped. They were utterly and completelydumbfounded,	51 E montò in barca con loro, e il vento cessò; e si stupirono più che mai dentro di sè;
52 because they had not seen what the miracle of the loaves meant; their minds were closed.	52 non avendo compreso il miracolo dei pani, per essere il lor cuore indurito.
53 Having made the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored there.	53 Attraversato il lago vennero nel territorio di Genezaret e presero terra.
54 When they disembarked people at once recognised him,	54 Quando sbarcarono, la gente subito lo riconobbe
55 and started hurrying al through the countryside and brought the sick on stretchers to wherever theyheard he was.	55 e percorrendo egli tutti i dintorni si cominciò a portare gl'infermi sui loro lettucci, dovunque s'intendeva che fosse.
56 And wherever he went, to vil age or town or farm, they laid down the sick in the open spaces, begginghim to let them touch even the fringe of his cloak. And al those who touched him were saved.	56 E dappertutto dove egli giungeva, nei villaggi, nelle campagne o nelle città posavano i malati sulle piazze e lo pregavano di lasciar toccare almeno il lembo della sua veste; e tutti quelli che lo toccavano erano guariti.
