1 Leaving that district, he went to his home town, and his disciples accompanied him.	1 Quindi partitosi di là, si recò nella sua patria, e i suoi discepoli lo seguirono.
2 With the coming of the Sabbath he began teaching in the synagogue, and most of them wereastonished when they heard him. They said, 'Where did the man get al this? What is this wisdom that has beengranted him, and these miracles that are worked through him?	2 E venuto il sabato, cominciò ad insegnare nella sinagoga; e molti nell'udirlo rimanevano stupiti della sua dottrina e dicevano: Donde mai ha costui queste cose? e che sapienza è mai questa che gli è data? e quali miracoli si operano per le sue mani?
3 This is the carpenter, surely, the son of Mary, the brother of James and Joset and Jude and Simon? Hissisters, too, are they not here with us?' And they would not accept him.	3 Non è costui 11 falegname, il figlio di Maria, il fratello di Giacomo, di Giuseppe, di Giuda e di Sirnone? e non abbiamo qui tra noi le sue sorelle? E si scandalizzavano di lui.
4 And Jesus said to them, 'A prophet is despised only in his own country, among his own relations and inhis own house';	4 Ma Gesù diceva loro: Un profeta non è senza onore che nella sua patria, nella sua casa e tra i suoi parenti.
5 and he could work no miracle there, except that he cured a few sick people by laying his hands onthem.	5 E non poteva fare alcun miracolo e non guari che pochi infermi, imposte loro le mani.
6 He was amazed at their lack of faith. He made a tour round the vil ages, teaching.	6 E si maravigliava della loro incredulità. E andava attorno per i circostanti villaggi, insegnando.
7 Then he summoned the Twelve and began to send them out in pairs, giving them authority overunclean spirits.	7 E chiamò a sè i dodici, e cominciò a mandarli a due a due, dando loro potere sugli spiriti immondi.
8 And he instructed them to take nothing for the journey except a staff -- no bread, no haversack, nocoppers for their purses.	8 E comandò loro di non prendere nulla pel viaggio, eccetto il bastone: non bisaccia, non pane, non danaro nella cintura;
9 They were to wear sandals but, he added, 'Don't take a spare tunic.'	9 ma andassero calzati di sandali e non portassero due tonache.
10 And he said to them, 'If you enter a house anywhere, stay there until you leave the district.	10 E diceva loro: In qualunque casa entrerete, trattenetevi in essa finche non partiate di là.
11 And if any place does not welcome you and people refuse to listen to you, as you walk away shake offthe dust under your feet as evidence to them.'	11 E se non vorranno ricevervi, nè ascoltarvi, ritiratevi di là, scotete la polvere dai vostri piedi in testimonianza contro di loro.
12 So they set off to proclaim repentance;	12 Essi, partiti, andavano predicando alla gente che facesse penitenza.
13 and they cast out many devils, and anointed many sick people with oil and cured them.	13 E scacciavano molti demoni, ed ungevano con olio molti infermi e li risanavano.
14 King Herod had heard about him, since by now his name was wel known. Some were saying, 'Johnthe Baptist has risen from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.'	14 Or il re Erode, avendo sentito parlare di Gesù (chè la fama si era sparsa), diceva: Giovanni Battista è risuscitato dai morti e però si operan dei miracoli per lui.
15 Others said, 'He is Elijah,' others again, 'He is a prophet, like the prophets we used to have.'	15 Altri invece dicevano: Costui è Elia. Ed altri: E' un profeta, come quelli di una volta.
16 But when Herod heard this he said, 'It is John whose head I cut off; he has risen from the dead.'	16 Ma udite queste cose, Erode disse: Quel Giovanni che io feci decapitare, è risorto da morte, è lui.
17 Now it was this same Herod who had sent to have John arrested, and had had him chained up inprison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife whom he had married.	17 Infatti Erode aveva fatto arrestare e incatenare Giovanni in prigione ad istigazione di Erodiade, moglie di Filippo suo fratello, che egli teneva seco.
18 For John had told Herod, 'It is against the law for you to have your brother's wife.'	18 Perchè Giovanni diceva ad Erode: Non ti è lecito tenere la moglie di tuo fratello.
19 As for Herodias, she was furious with him and wanted to kil him, but she was not able to do so,	19 Erodiade gli tendeva insidie e bramava di farlo morire; ma non ci riusciva,
20 because Herod was in awe of John, knowing him to be a good and upright man, and gave him hisprotection. When he had heard him speak he was greatly perplexed, and yet he liked to listen to him.	20 Perché Erode temeva Giovanni, sapendolo uomo giusto e santo e io teneva in gran conto, e molte cose faceva dopo averlo consultato, e volentieri lo ascoltava.
21 An opportunity came on Herod's birthday when he gave a banquet for the nobles of his court, for hisarmy officers and for the leading figures in Galilee.	21 Ma venuto il giorno opportuno, Erode, nel suo dì natalizio, imbandì un convito ai grandi della corte, ai capitani e ai primi della Galilea.
22 When the daughter of this same Herodias came in and danced, she delighted Herod and his guests;so the king said to the girl, 'Ask me anything you like and I will give it you.'	22 Ed essendo la figlia della stessa Erodiade entrata a ballare e piaciuta ad Erode e ai convitati, il re disse alia fanciulla: Chiedimi quel che vuoi, io te lo darò.
23 And he swore her an oath, 'I wil give you anything you ask, even half my kingdom.'	23 E le giurò: Quel che mi chiederai te lo darò, anche la metà del mio regno.
24 She went out and said to her mother, 'What shall I ask for?' She replied, 'The head of John theBaptist.'	24 Ed essa, uscita, domandò a sua madre: Che chiederò mai? E quella rispose: La testa di Giovanni Battista.
25 The girl at once rushed back to the king and made her request, 'I want you to give me John theBaptist's head, immediately, on a dish.'	25 E rientrata subito frettolosamente dal re, gli fece la domanda, dicendo: Voglio che sul momento tu mi dia in un bacile la testa di Giovanni Battista.
26 The king was deeply distressed but, thinking of the oaths he had sworn and of his guests, he wasreluctant to break his word to her.	26 E il re ne fu contristato; ma pel giuramento e per i convitati non volle contrariarla;
27 At once the king sent one of the bodyguard with orders to bring John's head.	27 e mandò subito il carnefice coll'ordine di portare la testa di lui in un bacile.
28 The man went off and beheaded him in the prison; then he brought the head on a dish and gave it tothe girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.	28 Quello decapitatolo nella prigione, ne portò la testa in un bacile, e la diede alla fanciulla, e la fanciulla la diede a sua madre.
29 When John's disciples heard about this, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.	29 I discepoli di Giovanni, risaputo il fatto, andarono a prendere il suo corpo e lo posero in un sepolcro.
30 The apostles rejoined Jesus and told him al they had done and taught.	30 Or gli apostoli, tornati a Gesù gli riferirono quanto avevan fatto e insegnato.
31 And he said to them, 'Come away to some lonely place al by yourselves and rest for a while'; for therewere so many coming and going that there was no time for them even to eat.	31 Ed egli disse loro: Venite in disparte, in luogo solitario, a riposarvi un poco. Di fatti la gente che andava e veniva era tanta che essi non avevano neppure il tempo di mangiare.
32 So they went off in the boat to a lonely place where they could be by themselves.	32 E montati in barca, andarono in luogo appartato e deserto.
33 But people saw them going, and many recognised them; and from every town they al hurried to theplace on foot and reached it before them.	33 E molti li videro partire e lo notarono; e a piedi da tutte le città concorsero in quel luogo e vi giunsero prima di loro.
34 So as he stepped ashore he saw a large crowd; and he took pity on them because they were likesheep without a shepherd, and he set himself to teach them at some length.	34 E Gesù sbarcando, vide la gran folla e ne sentì compassione, perchè eran come pecore senza pastore e si mise ad insegnar loro molte cose.
35 By now it was getting very late, and his disciples came up to him and said, 'This is a lonely place and itis getting very late,	35 Ma facendosi tardi, gli si accostarono i discepoli a dirgli: Questo luogo è deserto ed è già tardi.
36 so send them away, and they can go to the farms and villages round about, to buy themselvessomething to eat.'	36 Licenziali onde vadano per le campagne vicine e per i villaggi a comprarsi da mangiare.
37 He replied, 'Give them something to eat yourselves.' They answered, 'Are we to go and spend twohundred denari on bread for them to eat?'	37 Ma egli rispose loro: Date voi a loro da mangiare. E gli dicono: Andremo noi a comprare duecento danari di pane per dar da mangiare ad essi?
38 He asked, 'How many loaves have you? Go and see.' And when they had found out they said, 'Five,and two fish.'	38 Dice loro: Quanti pani avete? Andate a vedere, E visto che ebbero, risposero: Cinque e due pesci.
39 Then he ordered them to get all the people to sit down in groups on the green grass,	39 E comandò loro di far accomodare tutti a brigate, sull'erba verde.
40 and they sat down on the ground in squares of hundreds and fifties.	40 E si adagiarono a gruppi di cento e cinquanta.
41 Then he took the five loaves and the two fish, raised his eyes to heaven and said the blessing; then hebroke the loaves and began handing them to his disciples to distribute among the people. He also shared out thetwo fish among them al .	41 E presi i cinque pani e i due pesci, guardando il cielo, benedisse e spezzò i pani e li detto ai discepoli perchè li mettessero davanti alla gente, ed anche i due pesci li spartì fra tutti.
42 They al ate as much as they wanted.	42 E tutti mangiarono e si saziarono.
43 They col ected twelve basketfuls of scraps of bread and pieces of fish.	43 E portaron via dodici panieri dei pezzi di pano avanzati, ed anche gli avanzi dei pesci.
44 Those who had eaten the loaves numbered five thousand men.	44 Or a mangiare erano cinquemila uomini.
45 And at once he made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side near Bethsaida,while he himself sent the crowd away.	45 E subito Gesù obbligò i suoi discepoli a montare in barca e precederlo di là del lago, verso Betsaida, mentre egli licenziava il popolo.
46 After saying goodbye to them he went off into the hills to pray.	46 E preso commiato dalla folla, se ne andò sul monte a pregare.
47 When evening came, the boat was far out on the sea, and he was alone on the land.	47 E caduta la sera, la barca era in mezzo al mare, e lui tutto solo a terra.
48 He could see that they were hard pressed in their rowing, for the wind was against them; and aboutthe fourth watch of the night he came towards them, walking on the sea. He was going to pass them by,	48 E come vide i discepoli affannati a remigare, per il vento loro contrario, verso la quarta vigilia delia notte andò verso di loro, camminando sulle acque; e voleva oltrepassarli.
49 but when they saw him walking on the sea they thought it was a ghost and cried out;	49 Ma quelli vedutolo camminare sul mare, immaginarono fosse un fantasma e gridarono,
50 for they had all seen him and were terrified. But at once he spoke to them and said, 'Courage! It's me!Don't be afraid.'	50 che tutti lo videro e ne furono spaventati. E subito rivolse loro la parola, dicendo: Coraggio, son io, non temete.
51 Then he got into the boat with them and the wind dropped. They were utterly and completelydumbfounded,	51 E montò nella barca, da loro, e il vento cessò. E più che mai dentro di sè stupirono;
52 because they had not seen what the miracle of the loaves meant; their minds were closed.	52 perchè non avevan capito il fatto dei pani, essendo il loro cuore accecato.
53 Having made the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored there.	53 E passato il lago, vennero nella terra di Genezaret e vi sbarcarono.
54 When they disembarked people at once recognised him,	54 E come furono a terra, subito la gente lo riconobbe.
55 and started hurrying al through the countryside and brought the sick on stretchers to wherever theyheard he was.	55 E correndo por tutto il paese, cominciarono a portare gli informi sui loro lettucci, dovunque udivano che egli fosse.
56 And wherever he went, to vil age or town or farm, they laid down the sick in the open spaces, begginghim to let them touch even the fringe of his cloak. And al those who touched him were saved.	56 E dappertutto ove giungeva, campagne, villaggi, o città che fossero, posavano gli infermi per le piazze e lo pregavano di potergli toccare almeno il lembo della veste; e quanti lo toccarono furono guariti.
