NEW JERUSALEMBIBLIA
Leaving that district, he went to his home town, and his disciples accompanied him.1 Salió de allí y vino a su patria, y sus discípulos le siguen.
With the coming of the Sabbath he began teaching in the synagogue, and most of them wereastonished when they heard him. They said, 'Where did the man get al this? What is this wisdom that has beengranted him, and these miracles that are worked through him?2 Cuando llegó el sábado se puso a enseñar en la sinagoga. La multitud, al oírle, quedaba maravillada, y decía: «¿De dónde le viene esto? y ¿qué sabiduría es ésta que le ha sido dada? ¿Y esos milagros hechos por sus manos?
This is the carpenter, surely, the son of Mary, the brother of James and Joset and Jude and Simon? Hissisters, too, are they not here with us?' And they would not accept him.3 ¿No es éste el carpintero, el hijo de María y hermano de Santiago, Joset, Judas y Simón? ¿Y no están sus hermanas aquí entre nosotros?» Y se escandalizaban a causa de él.
And Jesus said to them, 'A prophet is despised only in his own country, among his own relations and inhis own house';4 Jesús les dijo: «Un profeta sólo en su patria, entre sus parientes y en su casa carece de prestigio».
and he could work no miracle there, except that he cured a few sick people by laying his hands onthem.5 Y no podía hacer allí ningún milagro, a excepción de unos pocos enfermos a quienes curó imponiéndoles las manos.
He was amazed at their lack of faith. He made a tour round the vil ages, teaching.6 Y se maravilló de su falta de fe. Y recorría los pueblos del contorno enseñando.
Then he summoned the Twelve and began to send them out in pairs, giving them authority overunclean spirits.7 Y llama a los Doce y comenzó a enviarlos de dos en dos, dándoles poder sobre los espíritus inmundos.
And he instructed them to take nothing for the journey except a staff -- no bread, no haversack, nocoppers for their purses.8 Les ordenó que nada tomasen para el camino, fuera de un bastón: ni pan, ni alforja, ni calderilla en la faja;
They were to wear sandals but, he added, 'Don't take a spare tunic.'9 sino: «Calzados con sandalias y no vistáis dos túnicas».
And he said to them, 'If you enter a house anywhere, stay there until you leave the district.10 Y les dijo: «Cuando entréis en una casa, quedaos en ella hasta marchar de allí.
And if any place does not welcome you and people refuse to listen to you, as you walk away shake offthe dust under your feet as evidence to them.'11 Si algún lugar no os recibe y no os escuchan, marchaos de allí sacudiendo el polvo de la planta de vuestros pies, en testimonio contra ellos».
So they set off to proclaim repentance;12 Y, yéndose de allí, predicaron que se convirtieran;
and they cast out many devils, and anointed many sick people with oil and cured them.13 expulsaban a muchos demonios, y ungían con aceite a muchos enfermos y los curaban.
King Herod had heard about him, since by now his name was wel known. Some were saying, 'Johnthe Baptist has risen from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.'14 Se enteró el rey Herodes, pues su nombre se había hecho célebre. Algunos decían: «Juan el Bautista ha resucitado de entre los muertos y por eso actúan en él fuerzas milagrosas».
Others said, 'He is Elijah,' others again, 'He is a prophet, like the prophets we used to have.'15 Otros decían: «Es Elías»; otros: «Es un profeta como los demás profetas».
But when Herod heard this he said, 'It is John whose head I cut off; he has risen from the dead.'16 Al enterarse Herodes, dijo: «Aquel Juan, a quien yo decapité, ése ha resucitado».
Now it was this same Herod who had sent to have John arrested, and had had him chained up inprison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife whom he had married.17 Es que Herodes era el que había enviado a prender a Juan y le había encadenado en la cárcel por causa de Herodías, la mujer de su hermano Filipo, con quien Herodes se había casado.
For John had told Herod, 'It is against the law for you to have your brother's wife.'18 Porque Juan decía a Herodes: «No te está permitido tener la mujer de tu hermano».
As for Herodias, she was furious with him and wanted to kil him, but she was not able to do so,19 Herodías le aborrecía y quería matarle, pero no podía,
because Herod was in awe of John, knowing him to be a good and upright man, and gave him hisprotection. When he had heard him speak he was greatly perplexed, and yet he liked to listen to him.20 pues Herodes temía a Juan, sabiendo que era hombre justo y santo, y le protegía; y al oírle, quedaba muy perplejo, y le escuchaba con gusto.
An opportunity came on Herod's birthday when he gave a banquet for the nobles of his court, for hisarmy officers and for the leading figures in Galilee.21 Y llegó el día oportuno, cuando Herodes, en su cumpleaños, dio un banquete a sus magnates, a los tribunos y a los principales de Galilea.
When the daughter of this same Herodias came in and danced, she delighted Herod and his guests;so the king said to the girl, 'Ask me anything you like and I will give it you.'22 Entró la hija de la misma Herodías, danzó, y gustó mucho a Herodes y a los comensales. El rey, entonces, dijo a la muchacha: «Pídeme lo que quieras y te lo daré».
And he swore her an oath, 'I wil give you anything you ask, even half my kingdom.'23 Y le juró: «Te daré lo que me pidas, hasta la mitad de mi reino».
She went out and said to her mother, 'What shall I ask for?' She replied, 'The head of John theBaptist.'24 Salió la muchacha y preguntó a su madre: «¿Qué voy a pedir?» Y ella le dijo: «La cabeza de Juan el Bautista».
The girl at once rushed back to the king and made her request, 'I want you to give me John theBaptist's head, immediately, on a dish.'25 Entrando al punto apresuradamente adonde estaba el rey, le pidió: «Quiero que ahora mismo me des, en una bandeja, la cabeza de Juan el Bautista».
The king was deeply distressed but, thinking of the oaths he had sworn and of his guests, he wasreluctant to break his word to her.26 El rey se llenó de tristeza, pero no quiso desairarla a causa del juramento y de los comensales.
At once the king sent one of the bodyguard with orders to bring John's head.27 Y al instante mandó el rey a uno de su guardia, con orden de traerle la cabeza de Juan. Se fue y le decapitó en la cárcel
The man went off and beheaded him in the prison; then he brought the head on a dish and gave it tothe girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.28 y trajo su cabeza en una bandeja, y se la dio a la muchacha, y la muchacha se la dio a su madre.
When John's disciples heard about this, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.29 Al enterarse sus discípulos, vinieron a recoger el cadáver y le dieron sepultura.
The apostles rejoined Jesus and told him al they had done and taught.30 Los apóstoles se reunieron con Jesús y le contaron todo lo que habían hecho y lo que habían enseñado.
And he said to them, 'Come away to some lonely place al by yourselves and rest for a while'; for therewere so many coming and going that there was no time for them even to eat.31 El, entonces, les dice: «Venid también vosotros aparte, a un lugar solitario, para descansar un poco». Pues los que iban y venían eran muchos, y no les quedaba tiempo ni para comer.
So they went off in the boat to a lonely place where they could be by themselves.32 Y se fueron en la barca, aparte, a un lugar solitario.
But people saw them going, and many recognised them; and from every town they al hurried to theplace on foot and reached it before them.33 Pero les vieron marcharse y muchos cayeron en cuenta; y fueron allá corriendo, a pie, de todas las ciudades y llegaron antes que ellos.
So as he stepped ashore he saw a large crowd; and he took pity on them because they were likesheep without a shepherd, and he set himself to teach them at some length.34 Y al desembarcar, vio mucha gente, sintió compasión de ellos, pues estaban como ovejas que no tienen pastor, y se puso a enseñarles muchas cosas.
By now it was getting very late, and his disciples came up to him and said, 'This is a lonely place and itis getting very late,35 Era ya una hora muy avanzada cuando se le acercaron sus discípulos y le dijeron: «El lugar está deshabitado y ya es hora avanzada.
so send them away, and they can go to the farms and villages round about, to buy themselvessomething to eat.'36 Despídelos para que vayan a las aldeas y pueblos del contorno a comprarse de comer».
He replied, 'Give them something to eat yourselves.' They answered, 'Are we to go and spend twohundred denari on bread for them to eat?'37 El les contestó: «Dadles vosotros de comer». Ellos le dicen: «¿Vamos nosotros a comprar doscientos denarios de pan para darles de comer?»
He asked, 'How many loaves have you? Go and see.' And when they had found out they said, 'Five, and two fish.'38 El les dice: «¿Cuántos panes tenéis? Id a ver». Después de haberse cerciorado, le dicen: «Cinco, y dos peces».
Then he ordered them to get all the people to sit down in groups on the green grass,39 Entonces les mandó que se acomodaran todos por grupos sobre la verde hierba.
and they sat down on the ground in squares of hundreds and fifties.40 Y se acomodaron por grupos de cien y de cincuenta.
Then he took the five loaves and the two fish, raised his eyes to heaven and said the blessing; then hebroke the loaves and began handing them to his disciples to distribute among the people. He also shared out thetwo fish among them al .41 Y tomando los cinco panes y los dos peces, y levantando los ojos al cielo, pronunció la bendición, partió los panes y los iba dando a los discípulos para que se los fueran sirviendo. También repartió entre todos los dos peces.
They al ate as much as they wanted.42 Comieron todos y se saciaron.
They col ected twelve basketfuls of scraps of bread and pieces of fish.43 Y recogieron las sobras, doce canastos llenos y también lo de los peces.
Those who had eaten the loaves numbered five thousand men.44 Los que comieron los panes fueron 5.000 hombres.
And at once he made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side near Bethsaida, while he himself sent the crowd away.45 Inmediatamente obligó a sus discípulos a subir a la barca y a ir por delante hacia Betsaida, mientras él despedía a la gente.
After saying goodbye to them he went off into the hills to pray.46 Después de despedirse de ellos, se fue al monte a orar.
When evening came, the boat was far out on the sea, and he was alone on the land.47 Al atardecer, estaba la barca en medio del mar y él, solo, en tierra.
He could see that they were hard pressed in their rowing, for the wind was against them; and aboutthe fourth watch of the night he came towards them, walking on the sea. He was going to pass them by,48 Viendo que ellos se fatigaban remando, pues el viento les era contrario, a eso de la cuarta vigilia de la noche viene hacia ellos caminando sobre el mar y quería pasarles de largo.
but when they saw him walking on the sea they thought it was a ghost and cried out;49 Pero ellos viéndole caminar sobre el mar, creyeron que era un fantasma y se pusieron a gritar,
for they had all seen him and were terrified. But at once he spoke to them and said, 'Courage! It's me!Don't be afraid.'50 pues todos le habían visto y estaban turbados. Pero él, al instante, les habló, diciéndoles: «¡Animo!, que soy yo, no temáis».
Then he got into the boat with them and the wind dropped. They were utterly and completelydumbfounded,51 Subió entonces donde ellos a la barca, y amainó el viento, y quedaron en su interior completamente estupefactos,
because they had not seen what the miracle of the loaves meant; their minds were closed.52 pues no habían entendido lo de los panes, sino que su mente estaba embotada.
Having made the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored there.53 Terminada la travesía, llegaron a tierra en Genesaret y atracaron.
When they disembarked people at once recognised him,54 Apenas desembarcaron, le reconocieron en seguida,
and started hurrying al through the countryside and brought the sick on stretchers to wherever theyheard he was.55 recorrieron toda aquella región y comenzaron a traer a los enfermos en camillas adonde oían que él estaba.
And wherever he went, to vil age or town or farm, they laid down the sick in the open spaces, begginghim to let them touch even the fringe of his cloak. And al those who touched him were saved.56 Y dondequiera que entraba, en pueblos, ciudades o aldeas, colocaban a los enfermos en las plazas y le pedían que tocaran siquiera la orla de su manto; y cuantos la tocaron quedaban salvados.
