NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 First thing in the morning, the chief priests, together with the elders and scribes and the rest of theSanhedrin, had their plan ready. They had Jesus bound and took him away and handed him over to Pilate.	1 E subito la mattina i capi dei sacerdoti con gli anziani e gli Scribi e tutto il Sinedrio, tenuto consiglio, dopo aver legato Gesù, lo conciassero e lo consegnarono a Pilato.
2 Pilate put to him this question, 'Are you the king of the Jews?' He replied, 'It is you who say it.'	2 E Pilato gli domandò: Sei tu il Re dei Giudei? E Gesù rispose: Tu lo dici.
3 And the chief priests brought many accusations against him.	3 Intanto i capi dei sacerdoti lo accusavano di molte cose.
4 Pilate questioned him again, 'Have you no reply at al ? See how many accusations they are bringingagainst you!'	4 Allora Pilato di nuovo lo interrogò dicendo: Non rispondi niente? Vedi di quante cose ti accusano!
5 But, to Pilate's surprise, Jesus made no further reply.	5 Ma Gesù non rispose più nulla: talché Pilato se ne maravigliava.
6 At festival time Pilate used to release a prisoner for them, any one they asked for.	6 Or per la festa soleva mandar libero uno dei carcerati, quello che chiedevano.
7 Now a man called Barabbas was then in prison with the rebels who had committed murder during theuprising.	7 E ce n'era uno chiamato Barabba, legato tra i sediziosi, avendo commesso, in un tumulto, un omicidio.
8 When the crowd went up and began to ask Pilate the customary favour,	8 E, salito, il popolo cominciò a chiedere che facesse allora come sempre aveva fatto.
9 Pilate answered them, 'Do you want me to release for you the king of the Jews?'	9 E Pilato ad essi risposo: Volete che vi liberi, il re dei Giudei?
10 For he realised it was out of jealousy that the chief priests had handed Jesus over.	10 Sapeva bene che per invidia i capi dei sacerdoti l'avevano consegnato.
11 The chief priests, however, had incited the crowd to demand that he should release Barabbas forthem instead.	11 Ma i capi dei sacerdoti istigarono il popolo a chiedere piuttosto la liberazione di Barabba.
12 Then Pilate spoke again, 'But in that case, what am I to do with the man you call king of the Jews?'	12 E Pilato da capo a chieder loro: Che volete adunque ch'io faccia del Re dei Giudei?
13 They shouted back, 'Crucify him!'	13 Ed essi di nuovo gridarono: Crocifiggilo.
14 Pilate asked them, 'What harm has he done?' But they shouted al the louder, 'Crucify him!'	14 E Pilato a dir loro: E che male ha fatto? E quelli gridavano sempre più forte: Crocifìggilo.
15 So Pilate, anxious to placate the crowd, released Barabbas for them and, after having Jesusscourged, he handed him over to be crucified.	15 E Pilato, volendo contentare il popolo, liberò loro Barabba; e Gesù, dopo averlo fatto flagellare, lo consegnò perchè fosse crocifisso.
16 The soldiers led him away to the inner part of the palace, that is, the Praetorium, and cal ed thewhole cohort together.	16 E i soldati lo condussero nell'atrio del pretorio e vi radunarono tutta la coorte.
17 They dressed him up in purple, twisted some thorns into a crown and put it on him.	17 Lo vestirono di porpora, e, intrecciata una corona di spine, gliela conficcarono
18 And they began saluting him, 'Hail, king of the Jews!'	18 e cominciarono a salutarlo: Salute, o Re dei Giudei,
19 They struck his head with a reed and spat on him; and they went down on their knees to do himhomage.	19 e gli percuotevano il capo con una canna, e gli sputavano addosso, e piegando i ginocchi, l'adoravano.
20 And when they had finished making fun of him, they took off the purple and dressed him in his ownclothes. They led him out to crucify him.	20 E dopo averlo schernito, lo spogliarono della porpora o gli misero le sue vesti, e lo menarono fuori per crocifìggerlo.
21 They enlisted a passer-by, Simon of Cyrene, father of Alexander and Rufus, who was coming in fromthe country, to carry his cross.	21 E costrinsero a portare la croce di lui un certo Simone cireneo, padre di Alessandro e di Rufo, il quale tornando dalla campagna, passava di lì a caso.
22 They brought Jesus to the place cal ed Golgotha, which means the place of the skul .	22 E menarono Gesù al luogo del Golgota, che, tradotto, significa il luogo del teschio.
23 They offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he refused it.	23 E gli dettero da bere del vino mirrato, ma non no preso.
24 Then they crucified him, and shared out his clothing, casting lots to decide what each should get.	24 Poi lo crocifìssero, e ne divisero le vesti, tirandole a sorte, per sapere quel che toccasse a ciascuno.
25 It was the third hour when they crucified him.	25 Era l'ora terza, quando lo crocifìssero.
26 The inscription giving the charge against him read, 'The King of the Jews'.	26 C'era scritto sopra il titolo della sua condanna: Il Re dei Giudei.
27 And they crucified two bandits with him, one on his right and one on his left.	27 E con lui crocifìssero duo ladroni: uno alla sua destra, l'altro alla sua sinistra.
28	28 Così fu adempita la Scrittura che dice: E' stato annoverato tra i malfattori.
29 The passers-by jeered at him; they shook their heads and said, 'Aha! So you would destroy theTemple and rebuild it in three days!	29 E quelli che passavano lo bestemmiavano e dicevano crollando il capo: Ehi, tu che distruggi il tempio di Dio e in tre giorni lo riedifichi,
30 Then save yourself; come down from the cross!'	30 salva te stesso e scendi dalla croce!
31 The chief priests and the scribes mocked him among themselves in the same way with the words,'He saved others, he cannot save himself.	31 Nello stesso modo anche i capi dei sacerdoti e gli Scribi, facendosi beffe di lui, dicevano tra di loro: Ha salvato gli altri e non può salvare se stesso!
32 Let the Christ, the king of Israel, come down from the cross now, for us to see it and believe.' Eventhose who were crucified with him taunted him.	32 Il Cristo, il Re d'Israele scenda ora dalla croce, affinchè vediamo e crediamo. Anche quelli crocifìssi con lui lo beffeggiavano.
33 When the sixth hour came there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.	33 E venuta l'ora sesta, lo tenebre coprirono la terra fino all'ora nona.
34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, 'Eloi, eloi, lama sabachthani?' which means, 'MyGod, my God, why have you forsaken me?'	34 E all'ora nona Gesù esclamò con gran voce: Eloi, Eloi, lamma sabactani? che tradotto significa: Dio mio, Dio mio, perchè mi hai abbandonato?
35 When some of those who stood by heard this, they said, 'Listen, he is cal ing on Elijah.'	35 E alcuni degli astanti, uditolo, dicevano: Ecco, chiama Elia.
36 Someone ran and soaked a sponge in vinegar and, putting it on a reed, gave it to him to drink saying,'Wait! And see if Elijah wil come to take him down.'	36 Ed uno corse, e inzuppata una spugna nell'aceto, e postala in cima ad una canna, gli dette da bere dicendo: Lasciate, vediamo se Elia viene a levarlo.
37 But Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last.	37 Ma Gesù, emettendo un altissimo grido, spirò.
38 And the veil of the Sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom.	38 E il velo del tempio si squarciò in due, da capo a fondo.
39 The centurion, who was standing in front of him, had seen how he had died, and he said, 'In truth thisman was Son of God.'	39 Ed il centurione, che gli stava di faccia, vedendo come fosso spirato, gridando altamente, esclamò: Questo uomo era veramente Figlio di Dio.
40 There were some women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary of Magdala, Mary whowas the mother of James the younger and Joset, and Salome.	40 C'eran pure dello donne che da lontano osservavano,
41 These used to follow him and look after him when he was in Galilee. And many other women werethere who had come up to Jerusalem with him.	41 tra le quali era Maria Maddalena o Maria madre di Giacomo il Minore e di Giuseppe, e Salome; queste, mentre egli era in Galilea, lo seguivano e lo servivano, e molte altre che erano venute a Gerusalemme insieme con lui.
42 It was now evening, and since it was Preparation Day -- that is, the day before the Sabbath-	42 E fattosi sera, ch'era la Parasceve, cioè la vigilia del sabato,
43 there came Joseph of Arimathaea, a prominent member of the Council, who himself lived in the hopeof seeing the kingdom of God, and he boldly went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.	43 Giuseppe d'Arimatea, nobile consigliere, che pure aspettava il regno di Dio, andò a presentarsi coraggiosamente a Pilato e gli chiese il corpo di Gesù.
44 Pilate, astonished that he should have died so soon, summoned the centurion and enquired if he hadbeen dead for some time.	44 Pilato si maravigliò che fosse già spirato; e fatto chiamare il centurione, gli domandò se fosse già morto.
45 Having been assured of this by the centurion, he granted the corpse to Joseph	45 Ed essendo da lui stato rassicurato, donò il corpo a Giuseppe.
46 who bought a shroud, took Jesus down from the cross, wrapped him in the shroud and laid him in atomb which had been hewn out of the rock. He then rol ed a stone against the entrance to the tomb.	46 E questi, comprato un lenzuolo, o deposto Gesù dalla croce, lo involse nel lenzuolo e io mise in un sepolcro scavato in un sasso, e rotolò una pietra alla bocca della tomba.
47 Mary of Magdala and Mary the mother of Joset took note of where he was laid.	47 E Maria Maddalena e Maria madre di Giuseppe stavano a guardare dove lo collocavano.
