NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLES DES PEUPLES
1 First thing in the morning, the chief priests, together with the elders and scribes and the rest of theSanhedrin, had their plan ready. They had Jesus bound and took him away and handed him over to Pilate.	1 Dès le matin, les chefs des prêtres, les Anciens et les maîtres de la Loi, en un mot tout le Sanhédrin, se réunirent en conseil. Après avoir lié Jésus, ils l’emmenèrent et le livrèrent à Pilate.
2 Pilate put to him this question, 'Are you the king of the Jews?' He replied, 'It is you who say it.'	2 Pilate l’interrogea: "Es-tu bien le roi des Juifs?” Jésus lui répondit: "C’est toi qui le dis.”
3 And the chief priests brought many accusations against him.	3 Les chefs des prêtres lançaient contre lui toutes sortes d’accusations,
4 Pilate questioned him again, 'Have you no reply at al ? See how many accusations they are bringingagainst you!'	4 aussi Pilate l’interrogea-t-il de nouveau: "Tu ne réponds rien? Regarde tout ce dont ils t’accusent!”
5 But, to Pilate's surprise, Jesus made no further reply.	5 Mais Jésus ne répondait toujours rien, si bien que Pilate était déconcerté.
6 At festival time Pilate used to release a prisoner for them, any one they asked for.	6 Chaque année, pour la fête, Pilate leur relâchait un prisonnier, celui qu’ils réclamaient.
7 Now a man called Barabbas was then in prison with the rebels who had committed murder during theuprising.	7 Or il y avait un certain Barabbas qui était dans les chaînes avec ses complices: ils avaient commis un meurtre au cours d’une émeute.
8 When the crowd went up and began to ask Pilate the customary favour,	8 La foule vint donc réclamer ce qu’il leur accordait d’habitude.
9 Pilate answered them, 'Do you want me to release for you the king of the Jews?'	9 Pilate leur répondit: "Voulez-vous que je vous relâche le roi des Juifs?”
10 For he realised it was out of jealousy that the chief priests had handed Jesus over.	10 Il savait bien en effet, que c’étaient les chefs des prêtres qui le livraient par jalousie.
11 The chief priests, however, had incited the crowd to demand that he should release Barabbas forthem instead.	11 Mais les chefs des prêtres manœuvrèrent la foule et elle demanda que Pilate relâche plutôt Barabbas.
12 Then Pilate spoke again, 'But in that case, what am I to do with the man you call king of the Jews?'	12 Pilate leur adressa de nouveau la parole: "Que vais-je donc faire de celui que vous appelez le Roi des Juifs?”
13 They shouted back, 'Crucify him!'	13 Ils crièrent: "Mets-le en croix!”
14 Pilate asked them, 'What harm has he done?' But they shouted al the louder, 'Crucify him!'	14 Pilate insista: "Qu’a-t-il donc fait de mal?” Mais ils crièrent de plus belle: "Mets-le en croix!”
15 So Pilate, anxious to placate the crowd, released Barabbas for them and, after having Jesusscourged, he handed him over to be crucified.	15 Pilate leur relâcha donc Barabbas, car il lui fallait contenter la foule; puis il fit flageller Jésus et le livra à ceux qui allaient le crucifier.
16 The soldiers led him away to the inner part of the palace, that is, the Praetorium, and cal ed thewhole cohort together.	16 Les soldats emmènent donc Jésus à l’intérieur de la cour de garde et rassemblent tout le bataillon.
17 They dressed him up in purple, twisted some thorns into a crown and put it on him.	17 Ils le couvrent d’un manteau rouge de l’armée et lui mettent une couronne qu’ils ont tressée avec des épines.
18 And they began saluting him, 'Hail, king of the Jews!'	18 Puis ils se mettent à le saluer: "Salut, roi des Juifs!”
19 They struck his head with a reed and spat on him; and they went down on their knees to do himhomage.	19 Ils lui frappent la tête avec un roseau, ils crachent sur lui et lui font de grandes salutations en pliant le genou devant lui.
20 And when they had finished making fun of him, they took off the purple and dressed him in his ownclothes. They led him out to crucify him.	20 Quand ils se sont bien moqués de lui, ils lui enlèvent le manteau rouge, lui remettent ses vêtements et le conduisent dehors pour le crucifier.
21 They enlisted a passer-by, Simon of Cyrene, father of Alexander and Rufus, who was coming in fromthe country, to carry his cross.	21 Pour porter sa croix, les soldats réquisitionnèrent un homme qui passait par là en revenant des champs: c’était Simon de Cyrène, le père d’Alexandre et de Rufus.
22 They brought Jesus to the place cal ed Golgotha, which means the place of the skul .	22 Ils conduisirent Jésus à l’endroit qu’on appelle Golgotha (ce qui veut dire lieu du Crâne).
23 They offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he refused it.	23 Arrivés là, ils lui donnèrent un mélange de vin et de myrrhe mais Jésus ne voulut pas en prendre.
24 Then they crucified him, and shared out his clothing, casting lots to decide what each should get.	24 Après l’avoir crucifié, ils partagèrent ses vêtements, tirant au sort la part de chacun.
25 It was the third hour when they crucified him.	25 On était au milieu de la matinée quand ils le crucifièrent.
26 The inscription giving the charge against him read, 'The King of the Jews'.	26 Une inscription mentionnait le motif de sa condamnation: "Le roi des Juifs.”
27 And they crucified two bandits with him, one on his right and one on his left.	27 Avec lui on avait crucifié deux brigands, l’un à sa droite et l’autre à sa gauche.
28	28 Ainsi s’accomplissait l’Écriture qui dit: Il a été compté parmi les malfaiteurs.
29 The passers-by jeered at him; they shook their heads and said, 'Aha! So you would destroy theTemple and rebuild it in three days!	29 Ceux qui passaient l’insultaient. Ils hochaient la tête et disaient: "Eh! Toi qui détruis le Temple et le rebâtis en trois jours,
30 Then save yourself; come down from the cross!'	30 sauve-toi toi-même, descends de la croix!”
31 The chief priests and the scribes mocked him among themselves in the same way with the words,'He saved others, he cannot save himself.	31 De même les chefs des prêtres et les maîtres de la Loi ricanaient entre eux: "Il en a sauvé d’autres, mais il ne se sauvera pas lui-même.
32 Let the Christ, the king of Israel, come down from the cross now, for us to see it and believe.' Eventhose who were crucified with him taunted him.	32 Que le Messie, le roi d’Israël, descende maintenant de la croix: alors nous verrons et nous croirons.” Même ceux qu’on avait crucifiés avec lui l’insultaient.
33 When the sixth hour came there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.	33 Il était environ midi, mais ce fut l’obscurité dans tout le pays jusqu’au milieu de l’après-midi.
34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, 'Eloi, eloi, lama sabachthani?' which means, 'MyGod, my God, why have you forsaken me?'	34 On était à la neuvième heure du jour lorsque Jésus s’écria d’une voix forte: "Élôï, Élôï, lama sabacthani?”; ce qui veut dire: “Mon Dieu, mon Dieu, pourquoi m’as-tu abandonné?”
35 When some of those who stood by heard this, they said, 'Listen, he is cal ing on Elijah.'	35 En l’entendant, plusieurs de ceux qui étaient présents firent cette réflexion: "Voilà qu’il appelle Élie!”
36 Someone ran and soaked a sponge in vinegar and, putting it on a reed, gave it to him to drink saying,'Wait! And see if Elijah wil come to take him down.'	36 Quelqu’un courut, remplit une éponge de vinaigre, et la fixa à un roseau pour lui donner à boire; il disait: "Attendons, Élie viendra peut-être pour le faire descendre.”
37 But Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last.	37 C’est alors que Jésus poussa un grand cri et rendit le dernier soupir.
38 And the veil of the Sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom.	38 Le rideau du Sanctuaire se déchira en deux, du haut en bas,
39 The centurion, who was standing in front of him, had seen how he had died, and he said, 'In truth thisman was Son of God.'	39 et au même moment, voyant comment Jésus était mort, l’officier romain qui se tenait en face de lui déclara: "En vérité cet homme était fils de Dieu.”
40 There were some women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary of Magdala, Mary whowas the mother of James the younger and Joset, and Salome.	40 Un groupe de femmes regardait à distance; parmi elles se trouvaient Marie de Magdala, Marie, mère de Jacques le petit et de Joset, et Salomé,
41 These used to follow him and look after him when he was in Galilee. And many other women werethere who had come up to Jerusalem with him.	41 qui le suivaient et l’assistaient quand il était en Galilée. Avec elles il y en avait d’autres qui étaient montées avec lui à Jérusalem.
42 It was now evening, and since it was Preparation Day -- that is, the day before the Sabbath-	42 On était déjà au soir; comme c’était la Préparation (c’est-à-dire la veille du sabbat),
43 there came Joseph of Arimathaea, a prominent member of the Council, who himself lived in the hopeof seeing the kingdom of God, and he boldly went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.	43 Joseph d’Arimathie arriva. C’était un membre important du Conseil, et un de ceux qui attendaient le Royaume de Dieu. Il n’hésita pas à se rendre chez Pilate pour demander le corps de Jésus.
44 Pilate, astonished that he should have died so soon, summoned the centurion and enquired if he hadbeen dead for some time.	44 Pilate s’étonna que Jésus soit déjà mort. Il appela donc l’officier et l’interrogea pour savoir s’il était bien mort depuis un moment.
45 Having been assured of this by the centurion, he granted the corpse to Joseph	45 Renseigné par cet officier, Pilate autorisa Joseph à prendre le corps.
46 who bought a shroud, took Jesus down from the cross, wrapped him in the shroud and laid him in atomb which had been hewn out of the rock. He then rol ed a stone against the entrance to the tomb.	46 Il acheta un drap, descendit le corps de la croix et l’enveloppa dans le drap. Puis il le déposa dans un tombeau taillé dans le roc et roula une pierre devant l’entrée du tombeau.
47 Mary of Magdala and Mary the mother of Joset took note of where he was laid.	47 Marie de Magdala et Marie, mère de Joset, observaient l’endroit où on le déposait.
