NEW JERUSALEM	DIODATI
1 First thing in the morning, the chief priests, together with the elders and scribes and the rest of theSanhedrin, had their plan ready. They had Jesus bound and took him away and handed him over to Pilate.	1 E SUBITO la mattina, i principali sacerdoti, con gli anziani, e gli Scribi, e tutto il concistoro, tenuto consiglio, legarono Gesù, e lo menarono, e lo misero in man di Pilato.
2 Pilate put to him this question, 'Are you the king of the Jews?' He replied, 'It is you who say it.'	2 E Pilato gli domandò: Sei tu il Re de’ Giudei? Ed egli, rispondendo, gli disse: Tu lo dici.
3 And the chief priests brought many accusations against him.	3 E i principali sacerdoti l’accusavano di molte cose; ma egli non rispondeva nulla.
4 Pilate questioned him again, 'Have you no reply at al ? See how many accusations they are bringingagainst you!'	4 E Pilato da capo lo domandò, dicendo: Non rispondi tu nulla? vedi quante cose costoro testimoniano contro a te.
5 But, to Pilate's surprise, Jesus made no further reply.	5 Ma Gesù non rispose nulla di più, talchè Pilato se ne maravigliava.
6 At festival time Pilate used to release a prisoner for them, any one they asked for.	6 Or ogni festa egli liberava loro un prigione, qualunque chiedessero.
7 Now a man called Barabbas was then in prison with the rebels who had committed murder during theuprising.	7 Or vi era colui, ch’era chiamato Barabba, ch’era prigione co’ suoi compagni di sedizione, i quali avean fatto omicidio nella sedizione.
8 When the crowd went up and began to ask Pilate the customary favour,	8 E la moltitudine, gridando, cominciò a domandare che facesse come sempre avea lor fatto.
9 Pilate answered them, 'Do you want me to release for you the king of the Jews?'	9 E Pilato rispose loro, dicendo: Volete che io vi liberi il Re de’ Giudei?
10 For he realised it was out of jealousy that the chief priests had handed Jesus over.	10 Perciocchè riconosceva bene che i principali sacerdoti glielo aveano messo nelle mani per invidia.
11 The chief priests, however, had incited the crowd to demand that he should release Barabbas forthem instead.	11 Ma i principali sacerdoti incitarono la moltitudine a chieder che più tosto liberasse loro Barabba.
12 Then Pilate spoke again, 'But in that case, what am I to do with the man you call king of the Jews?'	12 E Pilato, rispondendo, da capo disse loro: Che volete adunque che io faccia di colui che voi chiamate Re de’ Giudei?
13 They shouted back, 'Crucify him!'	13 Ed essi di nuovo gridarono: Crocifiggilo.
14 Pilate asked them, 'What harm has he done?' But they shouted al the louder, 'Crucify him!'	14 E Pilato disse loro: Ma pure, che male ha egli fatto? Ed essi vie più gridavano: Crocifiggilo
15 So Pilate, anxious to placate the crowd, released Barabbas for them and, after having Jesusscourged, he handed him over to be crucified.	15 Pilato adunque, volendo soddisfare alla moltitudine, liberò loro Barabba. E dopo aver flagellato Gesù, lo diede loro in mano, per esser crocifisso.
16 The soldiers led him away to the inner part of the palace, that is, the Praetorium, and cal ed thewhole cohort together.	16 Allora i soldati lo menarono dentro alla corte, che è il Pretorio, e raunarono tutta la schiera.
17 They dressed him up in purple, twisted some thorns into a crown and put it on him.	17 E lo vestirono di porpora; e contesta una corona di spine, gliela misero intorno al capo.
18 And they began saluting him, 'Hail, king of the Jews!'	18 Poi presero a salutarlo, e a dire: Ben ti sia, Re de’ Giudei.
19 They struck his head with a reed and spat on him; and they went down on their knees to do himhomage.	19 E gli percotevano il capo con una canna, e gli sputavano addosso; e postisi inginocchioni, l’adoravano.
20 And when they had finished making fun of him, they took off the purple and dressed him in his ownclothes. They led him out to crucify him.	20 E dopo che l’ebbero schernito, lo spogliarono della porpora, e lo rivestirono de’ suoi propri vestimenti, e lo menarono fuori, per crocifiggerlo.
21 They enlisted a passer-by, Simon of Cyrene, father of Alexander and Rufus, who was coming in fromthe country, to carry his cross.	21 ED angariarono a portar la croce di esso, un certo passante, detto Simon Cireneo, padre di Alessandro e di Rufo, il qual tornava da’ campi
22 They brought Jesus to the place cal ed Golgotha, which means the place of the skul .	22 E menarono Gesù al luogo detto Golgota; il che, interpretato, vuol dire: Il luogo del teschio.
23 They offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he refused it.	23 E gli dieder da bere del vino condito con mirra; ma egli non lo prese.
24 Then they crucified him, and shared out his clothing, casting lots to decide what each should get.	24 E dopo averlo crocifisso, spartirono i suoi vestimenti, tirando la sorte sopra essi, per saper ciò che ne torrebbe ciascuno.
25 It was the third hour when they crucified him.	25 Or era l’ora di terza, quando lo crocifissero.
26 The inscription giving the charge against him read, 'The King of the Jews'.	26 E la soprascritta del maleficio che gli era apposto era scritta di sopra a lui, in questa maniera: IL RE DE’ GIUDEI.
27 And they crucified two bandits with him, one on his right and one on his left.	27 Crocifissero ancora con lui due ladroni, l’un dalla sua destra, e l’altro dalla sinistra.
28	28 E si adempiè la scrittura che dice: Ed egli è stato annoverato fra i malfattori.
29 The passers-by jeered at him; they shook their heads and said, 'Aha! So you would destroy theTemple and rebuild it in three days!	29 E coloro che passavano ivi presso l’ingiuriavano, scotendo il capo, e dicendo: Eia! tu che disfai il tempio, ed in tre giorni lo riedifichi,
30 Then save yourself; come down from the cross!'	30 salva te stesso, e scendi giù di croce.
31 The chief priests and the scribes mocked him among themselves in the same way with the words,'He saved others, he cannot save himself.	31 Simigliantemente ancora i principali sacerdoti, con gli Scribi, beffandosi, dicevano l’uno all’altro: Egli ha salvati gli altri, e non può salvar sè stesso.
32 Let the Christ, the king of Israel, come down from the cross now, for us to see it and believe.' Eventhose who were crucified with him taunted him.	32 Scenda ora giù di croce il Cristo, il Re d’Israele; acciocchè noi lo vediamo, e crediamo. Coloro ancora ch’erano stati crocifissi con lui l’ingiuriavano
33 When the sixth hour came there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.	33 Poi, venuta l’ora sesta, si fecero tenebre per tutta la terra, infino all’ora di nona.
34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, 'Eloi, eloi, lama sabachthani?' which means, 'MyGod, my God, why have you forsaken me?'	34 Ed all’ora di nona, Gesù gridò con gran voce, dicendo: Eloi, Eloi, lamma sabactani? il che, interpretato, vuol dire: Dio mio, Dio mio, perchè mi hai abbandonato?
35 When some of those who stood by heard this, they said, 'Listen, he is cal ing on Elijah.'	35 Ed alcuni di coloro ch’eran quivi presenti, udito ciò, dicevano: Ecco, egli chiama Elia.
36 Someone ran and soaked a sponge in vinegar and, putting it on a reed, gave it to him to drink saying,'Wait! And see if Elijah wil come to take him down.'	36 E un di loro corse; ed empiuta una spugna d’aceto, e postala intorno ad una canna, gli diè da bere, dicendo: Lasciate; vediamo se Elia verrà, per trarlo giù.
37 But Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last.	37 E Gesù, gettato un gran grido, rendè lo spirito.
38 And the veil of the Sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom.	38 E la cortina del tempio si fendè in due, da cima a fondo.
39 The centurion, who was standing in front of him, had seen how he had died, and he said, 'In truth thisman was Son of God.'	39 E il centurione, ch’era quivi presente di rincontro a Gesù, veduto che dopo aver così gridato, egli avea reso lo spirito, disse: Veramente quest’uomo era Figliuol di Dio.
40 There were some women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary of Magdala, Mary whowas the mother of James the younger and Joset, and Salome.	40 Or quivi erano ancora delle donne, riguardando da lontano; fra le quali era Maria Maddalena, e Maria madre di Giacomo il piccolo, e di Iose, e Salome;
41 These used to follow him and look after him when he was in Galilee. And many other women werethere who had come up to Jerusalem with him.	41 le quali, eziandio mentre egli era nella Galilea, l’aveano seguitato, e gli aveano ministrato; e molte altre, le quali erano salite con lui in Gerusalemme
42 It was now evening, and since it was Preparation Day -- that is, the day before the Sabbath-	42 POI, essendo già sera perciocchè era la preparazione, cioè l’antisabato,
43 there came Joseph of Arimathaea, a prominent member of the Council, who himself lived in the hopeof seeing the kingdom of God, and he boldly went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.	43 Giuseppe, da Arimatea, consigliere onorato, il quale eziandio aspettava il regno di Dio, venne, e, preso ardire, entrò da Pilato, e domandò il corpo di Gesù.
44 Pilate, astonished that he should have died so soon, summoned the centurion and enquired if he hadbeen dead for some time.	44 E Pilato si maravigliò ch’egli fosse già morto. E chiamato a sè il centurione, gli domandò se era gran tempo ch’egli era morto;
45 Having been assured of this by the centurion, he granted the corpse to Joseph	45 e, saputo il fatto dal centurione, donò il corpo a Giuseppe.
46 who bought a shroud, took Jesus down from the cross, wrapped him in the shroud and laid him in atomb which had been hewn out of the rock. He then rol ed a stone against the entrance to the tomb.	46 Ed egli, comperato un panno lino, e tratto Gesù giù di croce, l’involse nel panno, e lo pose in un monumento, che era tagliato dentro una roccia; e rotolò una pietra all’apertura del monumento.
47 Mary of Magdala and Mary the mother of Joset took note of where he was laid.	47 E Maria Maddalena, e Maria madre di Iose, riguardavano ove egli sarebbe posto
