NEW JERUSALEMPeshitta
It was two days before the Passover and the feast of Unleavened Bread, and the chief priests and thescribes were looking for a way to arrest Jesus by some trick and have him put to death.1 ܒܬܪ ܕܝܢ ܬܪܝܢ ܝܘܡܝܢ ܗܘܐ ܗܘܐ ܦܨܚܐ ܕܦܛܝܪܐ ܘܒܥܝܢ ܗܘܘ ܪܒܝ ܟܗܢܐ ܘܤܦܪܐ ܐܝܟܢܐ ܒܢܟܠܐ ܢܐܚܕܘܢ ܘܢܩܛܠܘܢܝܗܝ ܀
For they said, 'It must not be during the festivities, or there wil be a disturbance among the people.'2 ܘܐܡܪܝܢ ܗܘܘ ܠܐ ܒܥܕܥܕܐ ܕܠܡܐ ܢܗܘܐ ܫܓܘܫܝܐ ܒܥܡܐ ܀
He was at Bethany in the house of Simon, a man who had suffered from a virulent skin-disease; hewas at table when a woman came in with an alabaster jar of very costly ointment, pure nard. She broke the jarand poured the ointment on his head.3 ܘܟܕ ܗܘ ܐܝܬܘܗܝ ܒܒܝܬ ܥܢܝܐ ܒܒܝܬܗ ܕܫܡܥܘܢ ܓܪܒܐ ܟܕ ܤܡܝܟ ܐܬܬ ܐܢܬܬܐ ܕܐܝܬ ܥܠܝܗ ܫܛܝܦܬܐ ܕܒܤܡܐ ܕܢܪܕܝܢ ܪܫܝܐ ܤܓܝ ܕܡܝܐ ܘܦܬܚܬܗ ܘܐܫܦܥܬܗ ܥܠ ܪܫܗ ܕܝܫܘܥ ܀
Some who were there said to one another indignantly, 'Why this waste of ointment?4
Ointment like this could have been sold for over three hundred denari and the money given to thepoor'; and they were angry with her.5 ܡܫܟܚ ܗܘܐ ܓܝܪ ܠܡܙܕܒܢܘ ܝܬܝܪ ܡܢ ܬܠܬܡܐܐ ܕܝܢܪܝܢ ܘܠܡܬܝܗܒܘ ܠܡܤܟܢܐ ܘܡܙܕܥܦܝܢ ܗܘܘ ܒܗ ܀
But Jesus said, 'Leave her alone. Why are you upsetting her? What she has done for me is a goodwork.6
You have the poor with you always, and you can be kind to them whenever you wish, but you wil notalways have me.7 ܒܟܠܙܒܢ ܓܝܪ ܡܤܟܢܐ ܐܝܬ ܠܟܘܢ ܥܡܟܘܢ ܘܐܡܬܝ ܕܨܒܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܡܫܟܚܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܕܬܥܒܕܘܢ ܠܗܘܢ ܕܫܦܝܪ ܐܢܐ ܕܝܢ ܠܐ ܒܟܠܙܒܢ ܐܝܬܝ ܠܘܬܟܘܢ ܀
She has done what she could: she has anointed my body beforehand for its burial.8
In truth I tel you, wherever throughout al the world the gospel is proclaimed, what she has done wilbe told as well, in remembrance of her.'9 ܘܐܡܝܢ ܐܡܪ ܐܢܐ ܠܟܘܢ ܕܟܠ ܐܝܟܐ ܕܬܬܟܪܙ ܤܒܪܬܝ ܗܕܐ ܒܟܠܗ ܥܠܡܐ ܘܐܦ ܡܕܡ ܕܥܒܕܬ ܗܕܐ ܢܬܡܠܠ ܠܕܘܟܪܢܗ ܀
Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, approached the chief priests with an offer to hand Jesus over tothem.10
They were delighted to hear it, and promised to give him money; and he began to look for a way ofbetraying him when the opportunity should occur.11 ܗܢܘܢ ܕܝܢ ܟܕ ܫܡܥܘ ܚܕܝܘ ܘܐܫܬܘܕܝܘ ܟܤܦܐ ܕܢܬܠܘܢ ܠܗ ܘܒܥܐ ܗܘܐ ܠܗ ܦܠܥܐ ܕܢܫܠܡܝܘܗܝ ܀
On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb was sacrificed, his disciples said tohim, 'Where do you want us to go and make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?'12 ܘܒܝܘܡܐ ܩܕܡܝܐ ܕܦܛܝܪܐ ܕܒܗ ܕܒܚܝܢ ܝܗܘܕܝܐ ܦܨܚܐ ܐܡܪܝܢ ܠܗ ܬܠܡܝܕܘܗܝ ܐܝܟܐ ܨܒܐ ܐܢܬ ܕܢܐܙܠ ܢܛܝܒ ܠܟ ܕܬܐܟܘܠ ܦܨܚܐ ܀
So he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 'Go into the city and you will meet a man carrying apitcher of water.
and say to the owner of the house which he enters, "The Master says: Where is the room for me toeat the Passover with my disciples?"14 ܘܠܐܝܟܐ ܕܥܐܠ ܐܡܪܘ ܠܡܪܐ ܒܝܬܐ ܪܒܢ ܐܡܪ ܐܝܟܘ ܒܝܬ ܡܫܪܝܐ ܐܝܟܐ ܕܐܟܘܠ ܥܡ ܬܠܡܝܕܝ ܦܨܚܐ ܀
He wil show you a large upper room furnished with couches, al prepared. Make the preparations forus there.'15 ܘܗܐ ܡܚܘܐ ܠܟܘܢ ܥܠܝܬܐ ܪܒܬܐ ܕܡܫܘܝܐ ܘܡܛܝܒܐ ܬܡܢ ܬܩܢܘ ܠܢ ܀
The disciples set out and went to the city and found everything as he had told them, and preparedthe Passover.16
When evening came he arrived with the Twelve.17
And while they were at table eating, Jesus said, 'In truth I tell you, one of you is about to betray me,one of you eating with me.'18 ܘܟܕ ܤܡܝܟܝܢ ܘܠܥܤܝܢ ܐܡܪ ܝܫܘܥ ܐܡܝܢ ܐܡܪ ܐܢܐ ܠܟܘܢ ܕܚܕ ܡܢܟܘܢ ܕܐܟܠ ܥܡܝ ܗܘ ܢܫܠܡܢܝ ܀
They were distressed and said to him, one after another, 'Not me, surely?'19
He said to them, 'It is one of the Twelve, one who is dipping into the same dish with me.20 ܗܘ ܕܝܢ ܐܡܪ ܠܗܘܢ ܚܕ ܡܢ ܬܪܥܤܪ ܕܨܒܥ ܥܡܝ ܒܠܓܬܐ ܀
Yes, the Son of man is going to his fate, as the scriptures say he will, but alas for that man by whomthe Son of man is betrayed! Better for that man if he had never been born.'21 ܘܒܪܗ ܕܐܢܫܐ ܐܙܠ ܐܝܟܢܐ ܕܟܬܝܒ ܥܠܘܗܝ ܘܝ ܕܝܢ ܠܓܒܪܐ ܗܘ ܕܒܐܝܕܗ ܡܫܬܠܡ ܒܪܗ ܕܐܢܫܐ ܦܩܚ ܗܘܐ ܠܗ ܠܓܒܪܐ ܗܘ ܐܠܘ ܠܐ ܐܬܝܠܕ ܀
And as they were eating he took bread, and when he had said the blessing he broke it and gave it tothem. 'Take it,' he said, 'this is my body.'22 ܘܟܕ ܗܢܘܢ ܠܥܤܝܢ ܢܤܒ ܝܫܘܥ ܠܚܡܐ ܘܒܪܟ ܘܩܨܐ ܘܝܗܒ ܠܗܘܢ ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗܘܢ ܤܒܘ ܗܢܐ ܐܝܬܘܗܝ ܦܓܪܝ ܀
Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he handed it to them, and al drank from it,23 ܘܢܤܒ ܟܤܐ ܘܐܘܕܝ ܘܒܪܟ ܘܝܗܒ ܠܗܘܢ ܘܐܫܬܝܘ ܡܢܗ ܟܠܗܘܢ ܀
and he said to them, 'This is my blood, the blood of the covenant, poured out for many.24 ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗܘܢ ܗܢܘ ܕܡܝ ܕܕܝܬܩܐ ܚܕܬܐ ܕܚܠܦ ܤܓܝܐܐ ܡܬܐܫܕ ܀
In truth I tel you, I shal never drink wine any more until the day I drink the new wine in the kingdomof God.'25 ܐܡܝܢ ܐܡܪ ܐܢܐ ܠܟܘܢ ܕܬܘܒ ܠܐ ܐܫܬܐ ܡܢ ܝܠܕܐ ܕܓܦܬܐ ܥܕܡܐ ܠܝܘܡܐ ܗܘ ܕܒܗ ܐܫܬܝܘܗܝ ܚܕܬܐܝܬ ܒܡܠܟܘܬܗ ܕܐܠܗܐ ܀
After the psalms had been sung they left for the Mount of Olives.26
And Jesus said to them, 'You wil all fal away, for the scripture says: I shal strike the shepherd andthe sheep wil be scattered;27 ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗܘܢ ܝܫܘܥ ܕܟܠܟܘܢ ܬܬܟܫܠܘܢ ܒܝ ܒܗܢܐ ܠܠܝܐ ܟܬܝܒ ܓܝܪ ܕܐܡܚܐ ܠܪܥܝܐ ܘܢܬܒܕܪܘܢ ܐܡܪܘܗܝ ܀
however, after my resurrection I shall go before you into Galilee.'28 ܐܠܐ ܡܐ ܕܩܡܬ ܩܕܡ ܐܢܐ ܠܟܘܢ ܠܓܠܝܠܐ ܀
Peter said, 'Even if all fal away, I wil not.'29 ܐܡܪ ܠܗ ܟܐܦܐ ܐܢ ܟܠܗܘܢ ܢܬܟܫܠܘܢ ܐܠܐ ܠܐ ܐܢܐ ܀
And Jesus said to him, 'In truth I tel you, this day, this very night, before the cock crows twice, youwil have disowned me three times.'30 ܐܡܪ ܠܗ ܝܫܘܥ ܐܡܝܢ ܐܡܪ ܐܢܐ ܠܟ ܕܐܢܬ ܝܘܡܢܐ ܒܠܠܝܐ ܗܢܐ ܩܕܡ ܕܢܩܪܐ ܬܪܢܓܠܐ ܬܪܬܝܢ ܙܒܢܝܢ ܬܠܬ ܬܟܦܘܪ ܒܝ ܀
But he repeated stil more earnestly, 'If I have to die with you, I wil never disown you.' And they allsaid the same.31 ܗܘ ܕܝܢ ܝܬܝܪܐܝܬ ܐܡܪ ܗܘܐ ܕܐܢ ܢܗܘܐ ܠܝ ܠܡܡܬ ܥܡܟ ܠܐ ܐܟܦܘܪ ܒܟ ܡܪܝ ܘܐܟܘܬܗ ܐܦ ܟܠܗܘܢ ܐܡܪܘ ܀
They came to a plot of land cal ed Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, 'Stay here while I pray.'32
Then he took Peter and James and John with him.33 ܘܕܒܪ ܥܡܗ ܠܟܐܦܐ ܘܠܝܥܩܘܒ ܘܠܝܘܚܢܢ ܘܫܪܝ ܠܡܬܟܡܪܘ ܘܠܡܬܬܥܩܘ ܀
And he began to feel terror and anguish. And he said to them, 'My soul is sorrowful to the point ofdeath. Wait here, and stay awake.'34
And going on a little further he threw himself on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, thishour might pass him by.35 ܘܩܪܒ ܩܠܝܠ ܘܢܦܠ ܥܠ ܐܪܥܐ ܘܡܨܠܐ ܗܘܐ ܕܐܢ ܡܫܟܚܐ ܬܥܒܪ ܡܢܗ ܫܥܬܐ ܀
'Abba, Father!' he said, 'For you everything is possible. Take this cup away from me. But let it be asyou, not I, would have it.'36 ܘܐܡܪ ܐܒܐ ܐܒܝ ܟܠ ܡܕܡ ܡܫܟܚ ܐܢܬ ܐܥܒܪ ܡܢܝ ܟܤܐ ܗܢܐ ܐܠܐ ܠܐ ܨܒܝܢܝ ܕܝܠܝ ܐܠܐ ܕܝܠܟ ܀
He came back and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, 'Simon, are you asleep? Had you notthe strength to stay awake one hour?37 ܘܐܬܐ ܐܫܟܚ ܐܢܘܢ ܟܕ ܕܡܟܝܢ ܘܐܡܪ ܠܟܐܦܐ ܫܡܥܘܢ ܕܡܟܬ ܠܟ ܠܐ ܐܫܟܚܬ ܚܕܐ ܫܥܐ ܠܡܬܬܥܪܘ ܀
Stay awake and pray not to be put to the test. The spirit is wil ing enough, but human nature is weak.'38
Again he went away and prayed, saying the same words.39
And once more he came back and found them sleeping, their eyes were so heavy; and they couldfind no answer for him.40 ܘܗܦܟ ܐܬܐ ܬܘܒ ܐܫܟܚ ܐܢܘܢ ܟܕ ܕܡܟܝܢ ܡܛܠ ܕܥܝܢܝܗܘܢ ܝܩܝܪܢ ܗܘܝ ܘܠܐ ܝܕܥܝܢ ܗܘܘ ܡܢܐ ܢܐܡܪܘܢ ܠܗ ܀
He came back a third time and said to them, 'You can sleep on now and have your rest. It is al over. The hour has come. Now the Son of man is to be betrayed into the hands of sinners.41 ܘܐܬܐ ܕܬܠܬ ܙܒܢܝܢ ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗܘܢ ܕܡܟܘ ܡܟܝܠ ܘܐܬܬܢܝܚܘ ܡܛܬ ܚܪܬܐ ܘܐܬܬ ܫܥܬܐ ܘܗܐ ܡܫܬܠܡ ܒܪܗ ܕܐܢܫܐ ܒܐܝܕܝܗܘܢ ܕܚܛܝܐ ܀
Get up! Let us go! My betrayer is not far away.'42
And at once, while he was stil speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, came up and with him a numberof men armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.43 ܘܥܕ ܗܘ ܡܡܠܠ ܐܬܐ ܝܗܘܕܐ ܤܟܪܝܘܛܐ ܚܕ ܡܢ ܬܪܥܤܪ ܘܥܡܐ ܤܓܝܐܐ ܥܡ ܤܦܤܪܐ ܘܚܘܛܪܐ ܡܢ ܠܘܬ ܪܒܝ ܟܗܢܐ ܘܤܦܪܐ ܘܩܫܝܫܐ ܀
Now the traitor had arranged a signal with them saying, 'The one I kiss, he is the man. Arrest him,and see he is well guarded when you lead him away.'44 ܘܝܗܒ ܠܗܘܢ ܐܬܐ ܡܫܠܡܢܐ ܗܘ ܕܡܫܠܡ ܘܐܡܪ ܗܘ ܕܢܫܩ ܐܢܐ ܗܘܝܘ ܐܘܚܕܘܗܝ ܙܗܝܪܐܝܬ ܘܐܘܒܠܘܗܝ ܀
So when the traitor came, he went up to Jesus at once and said, 'Rabbi!' and kissed him.45 ܘܒܪ ܫܥܬܗ ܩܪܒ ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗ ܪܒܝ ܪܒܝ ܘܢܫܩܗ ܀
The others seized him and arrested him.46 ܗܢܘܢ ܕܝܢ ܐܪܡܝܘ ܥܠܘܗܝ ܐܝܕܝܐ ܘܐܚܕܘܗܝ ܀
Then one of the bystanders drew his sword and struck out at the high priest's servant and cut off hisear.47
Then Jesus spoke. 'Am I a bandit,' he said, 'that you had to set out to capture me with swords andclubs?48
I was among you teaching in the Temple day after day and you never laid a hand on me. But this isto fulfil the scriptures.'49 ܟܠܝܘܡ ܠܘܬܟܘܢ ܗܘܝܬ ܟܕ ܡܠܦ ܐܢܐ ܒܗܝܟܠܐ ܘܠܐ ܐܚܕܬܘܢܢܝ ܐܠܐ ܕܢܫܠܡܘܢ ܟܬܒܐ ܗܘܬ ܗܕܐ ܀
And they al deserted him and ran away.50
A young man fol owed with nothing on but a linen cloth. They caught hold of him,51 ܘܥܠܝܡܐ ܚܕ ܐܬܐ ܗܘܐ ܒܬܪܗ ܘܥܛܝܦ ܤܕܘܢܐ ܥܪܛܠ ܘܐܚܕܘܗܝ ܀
but he left the cloth in their hands and ran away naked.52 ܗܘ ܕܝܢ ܫܒܩ ܤܕܘܢܐ ܘܥܪܩ ܥܪܛܠ ܀
They led Jesus off to the high priest; and all the chief priests and the elders and the scribesassembled there.53 ܘܐܘܒܠܘܗܝ ܠܝܫܘܥ ܠܘܬ ܩܝܦܐ ܪܒ ܟܗܢܐ ܘܐܬܟܢܫܘ ܠܘܬܗ ܟܠܗܘܢ ܪܒܝ ܟܗܢܐ ܘܤܦܪܐ ܘܩܫܝܫܐ ܀
Peter had followed him at a distance, right into the high priest's palace, and was sitting with theattendants warming himself at the fire.54 ܫܡܥܘܢ ܕܝܢ ܡܢ ܪܘܚܩܐ ܐܬܐ ܗܘܐ ܒܬܪܗ ܥܕܡܐ ܠܓܘ ܕܪܬܐ ܕܪܒ ܟܗܢܐ ܘܝܬܒ ܗܘܐ ܥܡ ܡܫܡܫܢܐ ܘܫܚܢ ܠܘܩܒܠ ܢܘܪܐ ܀
The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus in order to havehim executed. But they could not find any.55 ܪܒܝ ܟܗܢܐ ܕܝܢ ܘܟܠܗ ܟܢܫܗܘܢ ܒܥܝܢ ܗܘܘ ܥܠ ܝܫܘܥ ܤܗܕܘܬܐ ܕܢܡܝܬܘܢܝܗܝ ܘܠܐ ܐܫܟܚܘ ܀
Several, indeed, brought false witness against him, but their evidence was conflicting.56
Some stood up and submitted this false evidence against him,57 ܐܢܫܝܢ ܕܝܢ ܩܡܘ ܥܠܘܗܝ ܤܗܕܐ ܕܫܘܩܪܐ ܘܐܡܪܘ ܀
'We heard him say, "I am going to destroy this Temple made by human hands, and in three daysbuild another, not made by human hands."
But even on this point their evidence was conflicting.59
The high priest then rose before the whole assembly and put this question to Jesus, 'Have you noanswer to that? What is this evidence these men are bringing against you?'60 ܘܩܡ ܪܒ ܟܗܢܐ ܒܡܨܥܬܐ ܘܫܐܠܗ ܠܝܫܘܥ ܘܐܡܪ ܠܐ ܡܦܢܐ ܐܢܬ ܦܬܓܡܐ ܡܢܐ ܡܤܗܕܝܢ ܥܠܝܟ ܗܠܝܢ ܀
But he was silent and made no answer at all. The high priest put a second question to him saying,'Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?'61 ܗܘ ܕܝܢ ܫܬܝܩ ܗܘܐ ܘܡܕܡ ܠܐ ܥܢܝܗܝ ܘܬܘܒ ܫܐܠܗ ܪܒ ܟܗܢܐ ܘܐܡܪ ܐܢܬ ܗܘ ܡܫܝܚܐ ܒܪܗ ܕܡܒܪܟܐ ܀
'I am,' said Jesus, 'and you wil see the Son of man seated at the right hand of the Power and comingwith the clouds of heaven.'62 ܗܘ ܕܝܢ ܝܫܘܥ ܐܡܪ ܠܗ ܐܢܐ ܐܢܐ ܘܬܚܙܘܢ ܠܒܪܗ ܕܐܢܫܐ ܕܝܬܒ ܡܢ ܝܡܝܢܐ ܕܚܝܠܐ ܘܐܬܐ ܥܠ ܥܢܢܝ ܫܡܝܐ ܀
The high priest tore his robes and said, 'What need of witnesses have we now?63 ܪܒ ܟܗܢܐ ܕܝܢ ܨܪܐ ܟܘܬܝܢܗ ܘܐܡܪ ܡܢܐ ܡܟܝܠ ܡܬܒܥܝܢ ܠܢ ܤܗܕܐ ܀
You heard the blasphemy. What is your finding?' Their verdict was unanimous: he deserved to die.64
Some of them started spitting at his face, hitting him and saying, 'Play the prophet!' And theattendants struck him too.65 ܘܫܪܝܘ ܐܢܫܝܢ ܪܩܝܢ ܒܦܪܨܘܦܗ ܘܡܚܦܝܢ ܐܦܘܗܝ ܘܡܩܦܚܝܢ ܠܗ ܘܐܡܪܝܢ ܐܬܢܒܐ ܘܕܚܫܐ ܡܚܝܢ ܗܘܘ ܠܗ ܥܠ ܦܟܘܗܝ ܀
While Peter was down below in the courtyard, one of the high priest's servant-girls came up.66 ܘܟܕ ܫܡܥܘܢ ܠܬܚܬ ܒܕܪܬܐ ܐܬܬ ܥܠܝܡܬܐ ܚܕܐ ܕܪܒ ܟܗܢܐ ܀
She saw Peter warming himself there, looked closely at him and said, 'You too were with Jesus, theman from Nazareth.'67
But he denied it. 'I do not know, I do not understand what you are talking about,' he said. And hewent out into the forecourt, and a cock crowed.68 ܗܘ ܕܝܢ ܟܦܪ ܘܐܡܪ ܠܐ ܝܕܥ ܐܢܐ ܡܢܐ ܐܡܪܐ ܐܢܬܝ ܘܢܦܩ ܠܒܪ ܠܤܦܐ ܘܩܪܐ ܬܪܢܓܠܐ ܀
The servant-girl saw him and again started tel ing the bystanders, 'This man is one of them.'69 ܘܚܙܬܗ ܬܘܒ ܥܠܝܡܬܐ ܗܝ ܘܫܪܝܬ ܕܬܐܡܪ ܠܐܝܠܝܢ ܕܩܝܡܝܢ ܕܐܦ ܗܢܐ ܡܢܗܘܢ ܗܘ ܀
But again he denied it. A little later the bystanders themselves said to Peter, 'You are certainly one ofthem! Why, you are a Galilean.'70 ܗܘ ܕܝܢ ܬܘܒ ܟܦܪ ܘܒܬܪ ܩܠܝܠ ܬܘܒ ܗܢܘܢ ܕܩܝܡܝܢ ܐܡܪܘ ܠܟܐܦܐ ܫܪܝܪܐܝܬ ܡܢܗܘܢ ܐܢܬ ܐܦ ܓܝܪ ܓܠܝܠܝܐ ܐܢܬ ܘܡܡܠܠܟ ܕܡܐ ܀
But he started cursing and swearing, 'I do not know the man you speak of.'71 ܗܘ ܕܝܢ ܫܪܝ ܗܘܐ ܡܚܪܡ ܘܝܡܐ ܕܠܐ ܝܕܥ ܐܢܐ ܠܓܒܪܐ ܗܢܐ ܕܐܡܪܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܀ 72 ܘܒܗ ܒܫܥܬܐ ܩܪܐ ܬܪܢܓܠܐ ܕܬܪܬܝܢ ܙܒܢܝܢ ܘܐܬܕܟܪ ܫܡܥܘܢ ܡܠܬܗ ܕܝܫܘܥ ܕܐܡܪ ܗܘܐ ܠܗ ܕܩܕܡ ܕܢܩܪܐ ܬܪܢܓܠܐ ܬܪܬܝܢ ܙܒܢܝܢ ܬܠܬ ܬܟܦܘܪ ܒܝ ܘܫܪܝ ܕܢܒܟܐ ܀
And at once the cock crowed for the second time, and Peter recalled what Jesus had said to him,'Before the cock crows twice, you will have disowned me three times.' And he burst into tears.
