NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
It was two days before the Passover and the feast of Unleavened Bread, and the chief priests and thescribes were looking for a way to arrest Jesus by some trick and have him put to death.1 Erat autem Pascha et Azy ma post biduum. Et quaerebant summi sacerdoteset scribae, quomodo eum dolo tenerent et occiderent;
For they said, 'It must not be during the festivities, or there wil be a disturbance among the people.'2 dicebant enim: “ Non indie festo, ne forte tumultus fieret populi ”.
He was at Bethany in the house of Simon, a man who had suffered from a virulent skin-disease; hewas at table when a woman came in with an alabaster jar of very costly ointment, pure nard. She broke the jarand poured the ointment on his head.3 Et cum esset Bethaniae in domo Simonis leprosi et recumberet, venit mulierhabens alabastrum unguenti nardi puri pretiosi; fracto alabastro, effudit supercaput eius.
Some who were there said to one another indignantly, 'Why this waste of ointment?4 Erant autem quidam indigne ferentes intra semetipsos: “ Ut quidperditio ista unguenti facta est?
Ointment like this could have been sold for over three hundred denari and the money given to thepoor'; and they were angry with her.5 Poterat enim unguentum istud veniri plusquam trecentis denariis et dari pauperibus ”. Et fremebant in eam.
But Jesus said, 'Leave her alone. Why are you upsetting her? What she has done for me is a goodwork.6 Iesus autem dixit: “ Sinite eam; quid illi molesti estis? Bonum opus operataest in me.
You have the poor with you always, and you can be kind to them whenever you wish, but you wil notalways have me.7 Semper enim pauperes habetis vobiscum et, cum volueritis, potestisillis bene facere; me autem non semper habetis.
She has done what she could: she has anointed my body beforehand for its burial.8 Quod habuit, operata est:praevenit ungere corpus meum in sepulturam.
In truth I tel you, wherever throughout al the world the gospel is proclaimed, what she has done wilbe told as well, in remembrance of her.'9 Amen autem dico vobis: Ubicumquepraedicatum fuerit evangelium in universum mundum, et, quod fecit haec,narrabitur in memoriam eius ”.
Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, approached the chief priests with an offer to hand Jesus over tothem.10 Et Iudas Iscarioth, unus de Duodecim, abiit ad summos sacerdotes, ut prodereteum illis.
They were delighted to hear it, and promised to give him money; and he began to look for a way ofbetraying him when the opportunity should occur.11 Qui audientes gavisi sunt et promiserunt ei pecuniam se daturos.Et quaerebat quomodo illum opportune traderet.
On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb was sacrificed, his disciples said tohim, 'Where do you want us to go and make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?'12 Et primo die Azymorum, quando Pascha immolabant, dicunt ei discipuli eius:“ Quo vis eamus et paremus, ut manduces Pascha? ”.
So he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 'Go into the city and you will meet a man carrying apitcher of water. Fol ow him,13 Et mittit duos ex discipulis suis et dicit eis: “ Ite in civitatem, etoccurret vobis homo lagoenam aquae baiulans; sequimini eum
and say to the owner of the house which he enters, "The Master says: Where is the room for me toeat the Passover with my disciples?"14 et, quocumqueintroierit, dicite domino domus: “Magister dicit: Ubi est refectio mea, ubiPascha cum discipulis meis manducem?”.
He wil show you a large upper room furnished with couches, al prepared. Make the preparations forus there.'15 Et ipse vobis demonstrabit cenaculumgrande stratum paratum; et illic parate nobis ”.
The disciples set out and went to the city and found everything as he had told them, and preparedthe Passover.16 Et abierunt discipuli etvenerunt in civitatem et invenerunt, sicut dixerat illis, et paraverunt Pascha.
When evening came he arrived with the Twelve.17 Et vespere facto, venit cum Duodecim.
And while they were at table eating, Jesus said, 'In truth I tell you, one of you is about to betray me,one of you eating with me.'18 Et discumbentibus eis etmanducantibus, ait Iesus: “ Amen dico vobis: Unus ex vobis me tradet, quimanducat mecum ”.
They were distressed and said to him, one after another, 'Not me, surely?'19 Coeperunt contristari et dicere ei singillatim: “Numquid ego? ”.
He said to them, 'It is one of the Twelve, one who is dipping into the same dish with me.20 Qui ait illis: “ Unus ex Duodecim, qui intingit mecum incatino.
Yes, the Son of man is going to his fate, as the scriptures say he will, but alas for that man by whomthe Son of man is betrayed! Better for that man if he had never been born.'21 Nam Filius quidem hominis vadit, sicut scriptum est de eo. Vae autemhomini illi, per quem Filius hominis traditur! Bonum est ei, si non esset natushomo ille ”.
And as they were eating he took bread, and when he had said the blessing he broke it and gave it tothem. 'Take it,' he said, 'this is my body.'22 Et manducantibus illis, accepit panem et benedicens fregit et dedit eis etait: “ Sumite: hoc est corpus meum ”.
Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he handed it to them, and al drank from it,23 Et accepto calice, gratias agensdedit eis; et biberunt ex illo omnes.
and he said to them, 'This is my blood, the blood of the covenant, poured out for many.24 Et ait illis: “ Hic est sanguis meusnovi testamenti, qui pro multis effunditur.
In truth I tel you, I shal never drink wine any more until the day I drink the new wine in the kingdomof God.'25 Amen dico vobis: Iam non bibam degenimine vitis usque in diem illum, cum illud bibam novum in regno Dei ”.
After the psalms had been sung they left for the Mount of Olives.26 Et hymno dicto, exierunt in montem Olivarum.
And Jesus said to them, 'You wil all fal away, for the scripture says: I shal strike the shepherd andthe sheep wil be scattered;27 Et ait eis Iesus: “ Omnesscandalizabimini, quia scriptum est: “Percutiam pastorem, et dispergentur oves”.
however, after my resurrection I shall go before you into Galilee.'28 Sed posteaquam resurrexero, praecedam vos in Galilaeam ”.
Peter said, 'Even if all fal away, I wil not.'29 Petrus autemait ei: “ Et si omnes scandalizati fuerint, sed non ego ”.
And Jesus said to him, 'In truth I tel you, this day, this very night, before the cock crows twice, youwil have disowned me three times.'30 Et ait illiIesus: “ Amen dico tibi: Tu hodie, in nocte hac, priusquam bis gallus vocemdederit, ter me es negaturus ”.
But he repeated stil more earnestly, 'If I have to die with you, I wil never disown you.' And they allsaid the same.31 At ille amplius loquebatur: “ Et sioportuerit me commori tibi, non te negabo ”. Similiter autem et omnesdicebant.
They came to a plot of land cal ed Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, 'Stay here while I pray.'32 Et veniunt in praedium, cui nomen Gethsemani; et ait discipulis suis: “Sedete hic, donec orem ”.
Then he took Peter and James and John with him.33 Et assumit Petrum et Iacobum et Ioannem secum etcoepit pavere et taedere;
And he began to feel terror and anguish. And he said to them, 'My soul is sorrowful to the point ofdeath. Wait here, and stay awake.'34 et ait illis: “ Tristis est anima mea usque admortem; sustinete hic et vigilate ”.
And going on a little further he threw himself on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, thishour might pass him by.35 Et cum processisset paululum,procidebat super terram et orabat, ut, si fieri posset, transiret ab eo hora;
'Abba, Father!' he said, 'For you everything is possible. Take this cup away from me. But let it be asyou, not I, would have it.'36 et dicebat: “ Abba, Pater! Omnia tibi possibilia sunt. Transfer calicem hunc ame; sed non quod ego volo, sed quod tu ”.
He came back and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, 'Simon, are you asleep? Had you notthe strength to stay awake one hour?37 Et venit et invenit eosdormientes; et ait Petro: “ Simon, dormis? Non potuisti una hora vigilare?
Stay awake and pray not to be put to the test. The spirit is wil ing enough, but human nature is weak.'38 Vigilate et orate, ut non intretis in tentationem; spiritus quidem promptus,caro vero infirma ”.
Again he went away and prayed, saying the same words.39 Et iterum abiens oravit, eundem sermonem dicens.
And once more he came back and found them sleeping, their eyes were so heavy; and they couldfind no answer for him.40 Etveniens denuo invenit eos dormientes; erant enim oculi illorum ingravati, etignorabant quid responderent ei.
He came back a third time and said to them, 'You can sleep on now and have your rest. It is al over.The hour has come. Now the Son of man is to be betrayed into the hands of sinners.41 Et venit tertio et ait illis: “ Dormiteiam et requiescite? Sufficit, venit hora: ecce traditur Filius hominis in manuspeccatorum.
Get up! Let us go! My betrayer is not far away.'42 Surgite, eamus; ecce, qui me tradit, prope est ”.
And at once, while he was stil speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, came up and with him a numberof men armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.43 Et confestim, adhuc eo loquente, venit Iudas unus ex Duodecim, et cum illoturba cum gladiis et lignis a summis sacerdotibus et scribis et senioribus.
Now the traitor had arranged a signal with them saying, 'The one I kiss, he is the man. Arrest him,and see he is well guarded when you lead him away.'44 Dederat autem traditor eius signum eis dicens: “ Quemcumque osculatus fuero,ipse est; tenete eum et ducite caute ”.
So when the traitor came, he went up to Jesus at once and said, 'Rabbi!' and kissed him.45 Et cum venisset, statim accedens adeum ait: “ Rabbi ”; et osculatus est eum.
The others seized him and arrested him.46 At illi manus iniecerunt in eumet tenuerunt eum.
Then one of the bystanders drew his sword and struck out at the high priest's servant and cut off hisear.47 Unus autem quidam de circumstantibus educens gladiumpercussit servum summi sacerdotis et amputavit illi auriculam.
Then Jesus spoke. 'Am I a bandit,' he said, 'that you had to set out to capture me with swords andclubs?48 Et respondensIesus ait illis: “ Tamquam ad latronem existis cum gladiis et ligniscomprehendere me?
I was among you teaching in the Temple day after day and you never laid a hand on me. But this isto fulfil the scriptures.'49 Cotidie eram apud vos in templo docens, et non metenuistis; sed adimpleantur Scripturae ”.
And they al deserted him and ran away.50 Et relinquentes eum omnes fugerunt.
A young man fol owed with nothing on but a linen cloth. They caught hold of him,51 Et adulescens quidam sequebatur eumamictus sindone super nudo, et tenent eum;
but he left the cloth in their hands and ran away naked.52 at ille, reiecta sindone, nudusprofugit.
They led Jesus off to the high priest; and all the chief priests and the elders and the scribesassembled there.53 Et adduxerunt Iesum ad summum sacerdotem; et conveniunt omnes summisacerdotes et seniores et scribae.
Peter had followed him at a distance, right into the high priest's palace, and was sitting with theattendants warming himself at the fire.54 Et Petrus a longe secutus est eum usqueintro in atrium summi sacerdotis et sedebat cum ministris et calefaciebat se adignem.
The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus in order to havehim executed. But they could not find any.55 Summi vero sacerdotes et omne concilium quaerebant adversus Iesumtestimonium, ut eum morte afficerent, nec inveniebant.
Several, indeed, brought false witness against him, but their evidence was conflicting.56 Multi enim testimoniumfalsum dicebant adversus eum, et convenientia testimonia non erant.
Some stood up and submitted this false evidence against him,57 Et quidamsurgentes falsum testimonium ferebant adversus eum dicentes:
'We heard him say, "I am going to destroy this Temple made by human hands, and in three daysbuild another, not made by human hands." '58 “ Nosaudivimus eum dicentem: “Ego dissolvam templum hoc manu factum et intratriduum aliud non manu factum aedificabo” ”.
But even on this point their evidence was conflicting.59 Et ne ita quidem convenienserat testimonium illorum.
The high priest then rose before the whole assembly and put this question to Jesus, 'Have you noanswer to that? What is this evidence these men are bringing against you?'60 Et exsurgens summus sacerdos in medium interrogavitIesum dicens: “ Non respondes quidquam ad ea, quae isti testantur adversum te?”.
But he was silent and made no answer at all. The high priest put a second question to him saying,'Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?'61 Ille autem tacebat et nihil respondit. Rursum summus sacerdosinterrogabat eum et dicit ei: “ Tu es Christus filius Benedicti? ”.
'I am,' said Jesus, 'and you wil see the Son of man seated at the right hand of the Power and comingwith the clouds of heaven.'62 Iesusautem dixit: “ Ego sum, et videbitis Filium hominis a dextris sedentemVirtutis et venientem cum nubibus caeli ”.
The high priest tore his robes and said, 'What need of witnesses have we now?63 Summus autem sacerdos scindens vestimenta sua ait: “ Quid adhuc necessariisunt nobis testes?
You heard the blasphemy. What is your finding?' Their verdict was unanimous: he deserved to die.64 Audistis blasphemiam. Quid vobis videtur? ”. Qui omnescondemnaverunt eum esse reum mortis.
Some of them started spitting at his face, hitting him and saying, 'Play the prophet!' And theattendants struck him too.65 Et coeperunt quidam conspuere eum et velare faciem eius et colaphis eumcaedere et dicere ei: “ Prophetiza ”; et ministri alapis eum caedebant.
While Peter was down below in the courtyard, one of the high priest's servant-girls came up.66 Et cum esset Petrus in atrio deorsum, venit una ex ancillis summi sacerdotis
She saw Peter warming himself there, looked closely at him and said, 'You too were with Jesus, theman from Nazareth.'67 et, cum vidisset Petrum calefacientem se, aspiciens illum ait: “ Et tu cumhoc Nazareno, Iesu, eras! ”.
But he denied it. 'I do not know, I do not understand what you are talking about,' he said. And hewent out into the forecourt, and a cock crowed.68 At ille negavit dicens: “ Neque scio nequenovi quid tu dicas! ”. Et exiit foras ante atrium, et gallus cantavit.
The servant-girl saw him and again started tel ing the bystanders, 'This man is one of them.'69 Etancilla, cum vidisset illum, rursus coepit dicere circumstantibus: “ Hic exillis est! ”.
But again he denied it. A little later the bystanders themselves said to Peter, 'You are certainly one ofthem! Why, you are a Galilean.'70 At ille iterum negabat. Et post pusillum rursus, quiastabant, dicebant Petro: “ Vere ex illis es, nam et Galilaeus es ”.
But he started cursing and swearing, 'I do not know the man you speak of.'71 Illeautem coepit anathematizare et iurare: “ Nescio hominem istum, quem dicitis!”.
And at once the cock crowed for the second time, and Peter recalled what Jesus had said to him,'Before the cock crows twice, you will have disowned me three times.' And he burst into tears.72 Et statim iterum gallus cantavit; et recordatus est Petrus verbi, sicutdixerat ei Iesus: “ Priusquam gallus cantet bis, ter me negabis ”. Et coepitflere.
