1 It was two days before the Passover and the feast of Unleavened Bread, and the chief priests and thescribes were looking for a way to arrest Jesus by some trick and have him put to death.	1 - Alla festa di Pasqua e ai giorni degli azzimi mancavano due giorni; e i principi dei Sacerdoti e gli Scribi cercavano il modo di pigliare a tradimento Gesù e ucciderlo,
2 For they said, 'It must not be during the festivities, or there wil be a disturbance among the people.'	2 poichè dicevano : «Non facciamolo in giorno di festa, perchè non ci sia qualche tumulto di popolo».
3 He was at Bethany in the house of Simon, a man who had suffered from a virulent skin-disease; hewas at table when a woman came in with an alabaster jar of very costly ointment, pure nard. She broke the jarand poured the ointment on his head.	3 Mentre si trovava in Betania, in casa di Simone il lebbroso, e stava a tavola, entrò una donna con un vasetto alabastrino di unguento di nardo schietto, molto costoso; e, rotto l'alabastro, glielo versò sul capo.
4 Some who were there said to one another indignantly, 'Why this waste of ointment?	4 Alcuni se ne indignarono e cominciarono a dire: «Perchè s'è fatto questo sciupio di unguento?
5 Ointment like this could have been sold for over three hundred denari and the money given to thepoor'; and they were angry with her.	5 Si sarebbe potuto vendere per più di trecento danari a pro dei poveri!». E fremevano contro di lei.
6 But Jesus said, 'Leave her alone. Why are you upsetting her? What she has done for me is a goodwork.	6 Ma Gesù disse: «Lasciatela fare; perchè le date pena? Ella ha compiuto una buona azione.
7 You have the poor with you always, and you can be kind to them whenever you wish, but you wil notalways have me.	7 Infatti i poveri li avete sempre con voi, e potete far loro del bene quando volete; mentre non avete sempre me.
8 She has done what she could: she has anointed my body beforehand for its burial.	8 Essa ha fatto ciò che ha potuto; ha voluto anticipatamente ungere il mio corpo per la sepoltura.
9 In truth I tel you, wherever throughout al the world the gospel is proclaimed, what she has done wilbe told as well, in remembrance of her.'	9 In verità vi dico, che dovunque sarà predicato questo Vangelo, sarà pur contato a sua memoria quant'ella ha fatto».
10 Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, approached the chief priests with an offer to hand Jesus over tothem.	10 Allora Giuda Iscariote, uno dei Dodici, andò dai principi dei Sacerdoti per darlo proditoriamente in loro potere.
11 They were delighted to hear it, and promised to give him money; and he began to look for a way ofbetraying him when the opportunity should occur.	11 Essi uditolo, ne furono contenti e promisero di dargli denaro; mentre egli cercava il modo opportuno di tradirlo.
12 On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb was sacrificed, his disciples said tohim, 'Where do you want us to go and make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?'	12 Nel primo giorno degli azzimi, quando si sacrificava la Pasqua, i suoi discepoli gli chiesero: «Dove vuoi che andiamo a preparare quanto è necessario per mangiare la Pasqua?».
13 So he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 'Go into the city and you will meet a man carrying apitcher of water. Fol ow him,	13 Ed egli mandò due discepoli, dicendo: «Andate in città; vi verrà incontro un uomo carico di un'anfora d'acqua; seguitelo
14 and say to the owner of the house which he enters, "The Master says: Where is the room for me toeat the Passover with my disciples?"	14 e dovunque entri dite al padrone della casa: - Il Maestro dice: "Dov'è la mia sala, dove mangiare la Pasqua co' miei discepoli?" -
15 He wil show you a large upper room furnished with couches, al prepared. Make the preparations forus there.'	15 Egli vi mostrerà una gran sala pronta; quivi fate i preparativi per noi».
16 The disciples set out and went to the city and found everything as he had told them, and preparedthe Passover.	16 I discepoli andarono e, giunti in città, trovarono come egli aveva detto e prepararono la Pasqua.
17 When evening came he arrived with the Twelve.	17 Calata la sera, Gesù venne coi Dodici.
18 And while they were at table eating, Jesus said, 'In truth I tell you, one of you is about to betray me,one of you eating with me.'	18 E mentre erano a tavola e mangiavano, esclamò: «In verità vi dico che uno di voi che mangia con me mi tradirà».
19 They were distressed and said to him, one after another, 'Not me, surely?'	19 Essi cominciarono a contristarsi e domandargli un dopo l'altro: «Son forse io?».
20 He said to them, 'It is one of the Twelve, one who is dipping into the same dish with me.	20 Ma egli rispose loro: «Uno dei Dodici, che mette con me la mano nel piatto.
21 Yes, the Son of man is going to his fate, as the scriptures say he will, but alas for that man by whomthe Son of man is betrayed! Better for that man if he had never been born.'	21 Il Figliuol dell'uomo se ne va, com'è scritto di lui; ma guai a colui per mezzo del quale il Figliuol dell'uomo è tradito! Era meglio per lui se non fosse mai nato!».
22 And as they were eating he took bread, and when he had said the blessing he broke it and gave it tothem. 'Take it,' he said, 'this is my body.'	22 Mentre mangiavano, Gesù prese il pane, e, dopo averlo benedetto, lo spezzò e lo diede loro dicendo: «Prendete, questo è il mio corpo».
23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he handed it to them, and al drank from it,	23 Poi prese un calice e, rese grazie, lo diede loro, e tutti bevvero
24 and he said to them, 'This is my blood, the blood of the covenant, poured out for many.	24 e disse loro: «Questo è il mio sangue del nuovo testamento che sarà sparso per molti.
25 In truth I tel you, I shal never drink wine any more until the day I drink the new wine in the kingdomof God.'	25 Io vi dico in verità che non berrò più del succo della vite, fino a quel giorno in cui lo berrò nuovo nel regno di Dio».
26 After the psalms had been sung they left for the Mount of Olives.	26 Poi cantato l'inno, uscirono per andare al monte degli Ulivi.
27 And Jesus said to them, 'You wil all fal away, for the scripture says: I shal strike the shepherd andthe sheep wil be scattered;	27 e Gesù disse loro: «Io sarò per voi, questa notte, un'occasione di scandalo, perchè è scritto: "Io percoterò il pastore e le pecore saranno disperse".
28 however, after my resurrection I shall go before you into Galilee.'	28 Ma, dopo che sarò risuscitato, vi precederò in Galilea».
29 Peter said, 'Even if all fal away, I wil not.'	29 Ma Pietro gli dichiarò: «Ancorchè tutti si scandalizzassero per tua cagione; non sarà così di me».
30 And Jesus said to him, 'In truth I tel you, this day, this very night, before the cock crows twice, youwil have disowned me three times.'	30 Gesù gli rispose: «In verità ti dico che tu oggi, questa stessa notte, prima che il gallo abbia cantato la seconda volta mi rinnegherai tre volte».
31 But he repeated stil more earnestly, 'If I have to die with you, I wil never disown you.' And they allsaid the same.	31 Ma egli più fermamente insisteva: «Quand'anche dovessi morire con te, non ti rinnegherò». E lo stesso dicevan tutti gli altri.
32 They came to a plot of land cal ed Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, 'Stay here while I pray.'	32 Arrivati a un podere, detto Getsemani, Gesù disse a' suoi discepoli: «Sedete qui finchè io abbia pregato».
33 Then he took Peter and James and John with him.	33 E presi con sè Pietro, Giacomo e Giovanni, cominciò a tremare e ad essere in preda ad angoscia.
34 And he began to feel terror and anguish. And he said to them, 'My soul is sorrowful to the point ofdeath. Wait here, and stay awake.'	34 E disse loro: «L'anima mia è triste fino alla morte; rimanete qui e vegliate».
35 And going on a little further he threw himself on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, thishour might pass him by.	35 Inoltratosi si prostrò a terra e cominciò a pregare che quell'ora, se fosse possibile, passasse via da lui
36 'Abba, Father!' he said, 'For you everything is possible. Take this cup away from me. But let it be asyou, not I, would have it.'	36 ed esclamava: «Abba, Padre, tutto ti è possibile. Allontana da me questo calice; tuttavia non quello che voglio io ma quello che vuoi tu».
37 He came back and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, 'Simon, are you asleep? Had you notthe strength to stay awake one hour?	37 Poi tornò e li trovò addormentati e disse a Pietro: «Simone, dormi? Non sei stato capace di vegliare un'ora sola?
38 Stay awake and pray not to be put to the test. The spirit is wil ing enough, but human nature is weak.'	38 Vegliate e pregate per non cadere in tentazione. Lo spirito, sì, è pronto, ma la carne è debole».
39 Again he went away and prayed, saying the same words.	39 Andò di nuovo a pregare, dicendo le stesse parole.
40 And once more he came back and found them sleeping, their eyes were so heavy; and they couldfind no answer for him.	40 E ritornato, li trovò un'altra volta addormentati, perchè cadevan dal sonno e non sapevano che rispondergli.
41 He came back a third time and said to them, 'You can sleep on now and have your rest. It is al over.The hour has come. Now the Son of man is to be betrayed into the hands of sinners.	41 Ritornò una terza volta e disse loro: «Dormite pure e riposate! Basta così! L'ora è giunta; ecco il Figliuol dell'uomo è dato in mano ai peccatori.
42 Get up! Let us go! My betrayer is not far away.'	42 Alzatevi, andiamo; ecco: chi mi tradisce è ormai vicino».
43 And at once, while he was stil speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, came up and with him a numberof men armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.	43 Mentre ancora parlava, arrivò Giuda Iscariote, uno dei Dodici, accompagnato da una gran turba, armata di spade e bastoni, mandata dai principi dei sacerdoti, dagli Scribi e dai seniori,
44 Now the traitor had arranged a signal with them saying, 'The one I kiss, he is the man. Arrest him,and see he is well guarded when you lead him away.'	44 alla quale il traditore aveva dato questo segnale: «Quello che bacerò, è lui; pigliatelo e menatelo via, assicurandovene bene».
45 So when the traitor came, he went up to Jesus at once and said, 'Rabbi!' and kissed him.	45 Appena arrivato, subito accostandosi a lui, gli disse: «Salute, Rabbi!». E lo baciò.
46 The others seized him and arrested him.	46 Quelli, poste le mani addosso a Gesù, lo arrestarono.
47 Then one of the bystanders drew his sword and struck out at the high priest's servant and cut off hisear.	47 Uno dei presenti, sfoderata la spada, ferì un servo del sommo sacerdote e gli portò via di netto un orecchio.
48 Then Jesus spoke. 'Am I a bandit,' he said, 'that you had to set out to capture me with swords andclubs?	48 Gesù rivoltosi a loro, disse: «Siete venuti con spade e con bastoni per prendermi come se fossi un ladrone.
49 I was among you teaching in the Temple day after day and you never laid a hand on me. But this isto fulfil the scriptures.'	49 Ogni giorno me ne stavo tra voi nel tempio a insegnare e non mi avete preso; ma si compiano le Scritture».
50 And they al deserted him and ran away.	50 Allora tutti i suoi discepoli lo abbandonarono e fuggirono.
51 A young man fol owed with nothing on but a linen cloth. They caught hold of him,	51 Lo seguiva però un giovanetto coperto con un lenzuolo sul nudo; e lo presero.
52 but he left the cloth in their hands and ran away naked.	52 Ma quello, lasciato il lenzuolo, se ne fuggì nudo.
53 They led Jesus off to the high priest; and all the chief priests and the elders and the scribesassembled there.	53 Condussero Gesù dal sommo sacerdote, presso il quale si radunarono tutti i Sacerdoti, gli Scribi e i seniori.
54 Peter had followed him at a distance, right into the high priest's palace, and was sitting with theattendants warming himself at the fire.	54 Pietro lo seguì da lungi fin dentro al cortile del sommo sacerdote e seduto coi servitori si scaldava al fuoco.
55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus in order to havehim executed. But they could not find any.	55 Intanto i Sacerdoti e tutto il Sinedrio cercavano testimonianze contro Gesù per farlo morire e non ne trovavano,
56 Several, indeed, brought false witness against him, but their evidence was conflicting.	56 perchè molti deponevano il falso contro di lui, ma le testimonianze loro non concordavano.
57 Some stood up and submitted this false evidence against him,	57 E alcuni, alzatisi, attestarono il falso contro di lui dicendo:
58 'We heard him say, "I am going to destroy this Temple made by human hands, and in three daysbuild another, not made by human hands." '	58 «Lo abbiamo sentito dire:- Io distruggerò questo tempio, fatto da mano di uomo e in tre giorni ne fabbricherò un altro, che non sarà fatto da mano d'uomo-».
59 But even on this point their evidence was conflicting.	59 Ma neppure su ciò le loro testimonianze erano concordi.
60 The high priest then rose before the whole assembly and put this question to Jesus, 'Have you noanswer to that? What is this evidence these men are bringing against you?'	60 Allora il sommo sacerdote, alzatosi nel mezzo, domandò a Gesù: «Non rispondi nulla a quanto dicono contro di te?».
61 But he was silent and made no answer at all. The high priest put a second question to him saying,'Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?'	61 Ma egli taceva e non rispose nulla. Lo interrogò di nuovo il sommo sacerdote e gli chiese: «Sei tu il Cristo, il Figlio di Dio benedetto?».
62 'I am,' said Jesus, 'and you wil see the Son of man seated at the right hand of the Power and comingwith the clouds of heaven.'	62 Gesù rispose: «Sì, lo sono, e vedrete il Figliuol dell'uomo, seduto alla destra della potenza di Dio venire sulle nubi del cielo».
63 The high priest tore his robes and said, 'What need of witnesses have we now?	63 Il sommo sacerdote stracciandosi allora le vesti, esclamò: «Che bisogno abbiamo di testimoni?
64 You heard the blasphemy. What is your finding?' Their verdict was unanimous: he deserved to die.	64 Voi stessi avete udito la bestemmia: che ve ne pare?». Tutti lo condannarono come reo di morte.
65 Some of them started spitting at his face, hitting him and saying, 'Play the prophet!' And theattendants struck him too.	65 E cominciarono alcuni a sputargli addosso, e velargli il volto e a colpirlo con pugni, dicendogli: «Indovina». E le guardie lo schiaffeggiavano.
66 While Peter was down below in the courtyard, one of the high priest's servant-girls came up.	66 Mentre Pietro se ne stava giù nel cortile, venne una delle serve del sommo sacerdote
67 She saw Peter warming himself there, looked closely at him and said, 'You too were with Jesus, theman from Nazareth.'	67 e, visto Pietro riscaldarsi, lo guardò bene in viso, poi gli disse: «Anche tu eri con Gesù Nazzareno».
68 But he denied it. 'I do not know, I do not understand what you are talking about,' he said. And hewent out into the forecourt, and a cock crowed.	68 Ma egli negò, dicendo : «Nè lo conosco, nè comprendo quello che tu vuoi dire». E uscì fuori nel vestibolo; e un gallo cantò.
69 The servant-girl saw him and again started tel ing the bystanders, 'This man is one of them.'	69 La serva, vedutolo di nuovo, cominciò a dire agli astanti: «Costui è di quelli».
70 But again he denied it. A little later the bystanders themselves said to Peter, 'You are certainly one ofthem! Why, you are a Galilean.'	70 Ma egli negò nuovamente. E di lì a poco gli astanti dissero a Pietro: «Tu di sicuro devi essere di quelli; giacchè sei Galileo».
71 But he started cursing and swearing, 'I do not know the man you speak of.'	71 Egli però cominciò ad imprecare e a giurare: «Non conosco l'uomo, del quale parlate».
72 And at once the cock crowed for the second time, and Peter recalled what Jesus had said to him,'Before the cock crows twice, you will have disowned me three times.' And he burst into tears.	72 E subito il gallo cantò per la seconda volta. E Pietro si ricordò della parola dettagli da Gesù: «Prima che il gallo canti per la seconda volta, mi rinnegherai tre volte», e si mise a piangere.
