1 It was two days before the Passover and the feast of Unleavened Bread, and the chief priests and thescribes were looking for a way to arrest Jesus by some trick and have him put to death.	1 ויהי יומים לפני חג הפסח והמצות ויבקשו הכהנים הגדולים והסופרים איך יתפשהו בערמה להמיתו
2 For they said, 'It must not be during the festivities, or there wil be a disturbance among the people.'	2 ויאמרו אך לא בחג פן תהיה מהומה בעם
3 He was at Bethany in the house of Simon, a man who had suffered from a virulent skin-disease; hewas at table when a woman came in with an alabaster jar of very costly ointment, pure nard. She broke the jarand poured the ointment on his head.	3 ויהי בהיותו בבית היני בית שמעון המצרע ויסב אל השלחן ותבא אשה ובידה פך שמן נרד זך ויקר מאד ותשבר את הפך ותצק על ראשו
4 Some who were there said to one another indignantly, 'Why this waste of ointment?	4 ויש אשר מתרעמים איש אל רעהו לאמר על מה היה אבוד השמן הזה
5 Ointment like this could have been sold for over three hundred denari and the money given to thepoor'; and they were angry with her.	5 כי ראוי היה זה להמכר ביותר משלש מאות דינר ולתתו לעניים ויגערו בה
6 But Jesus said, 'Leave her alone. Why are you upsetting her? What she has done for me is a goodwork.	6 ויאמר ישוע הניחו לה למה תגיון נפשה מעשה טוב עשתה עמדי
7 You have the poor with you always, and you can be kind to them whenever you wish, but you wil notalways have me.	7 כי העניים תמיד עמכם וכשתרצו תוכלו להיטיב להם ואנכי לא אהיה אתכם תמיד
8 She has done what she could: she has anointed my body beforehand for its burial.	8 את אשר היה לאל ידה עשתה קדמה למשוח את גופי לחנטו
9 In truth I tel you, wherever throughout al the world the gospel is proclaimed, what she has done wilbe told as well, in remembrance of her.'	9 אמן אמר אני לכם כי באשר תקרא הבשורה הזאת אל כל העולם גם את אשר עשתה היא יספר לזכרון לה
10 Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, approached the chief priests with an offer to hand Jesus over tothem.	10 ויהודה איש קריות אחד משנים העשר הלך אל ראשי הכהנים למסר אותו אליהם
11 They were delighted to hear it, and promised to give him money; and he began to look for a way ofbetraying him when the opportunity should occur.	11 והם כשמעם שמחו ויאמרו לתת לו כסף ויבקש תאנה למסרו
12 On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb was sacrificed, his disciples said tohim, 'Where do you want us to go and make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?'	12 ויהי בראשון לחג המצות עת זבח הפסח ויאמרו אליו תלמידיו איפה תחפץ לאכל את הפסח ונלכה ונכין
13 So he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 'Go into the city and you will meet a man carrying apitcher of water. Fol ow him,	13 וישלח שנים מתלמידיו ויאמר אליהם לכו העירה ויפגע אתכם איש נשא צפחת המים לכו אחריו
14 and say to the owner of the house which he enters, "The Master says: Where is the room for me toeat the Passover with my disciples?"	14 ובאשר יבוא שמה אמרו לבעל הבית כה אמר הרב איה המלון אשת אכלה שם את הפסח עם תלמידי
15 He wil show you a large upper room furnished with couches, al prepared. Make the preparations forus there.'	15 והוא יראה אתכם עליה גדולה מצעה ומוכנה ושם הכינו לנו
16 The disciples set out and went to the city and found everything as he had told them, and preparedthe Passover.	16 ויצאו תלמידיו ויבאו העירה וימצאו כאשר דבר להם ויכינו את הפסח
17 When evening came he arrived with the Twelve.	17 ויהי בערב ויבא עם שנים העשר
18 And while they were at table eating, Jesus said, 'In truth I tell you, one of you is about to betray me,one of you eating with me.'	18 ויסבו ויאכלו ויאמר ישוע אמן אמר אני לכם אחד מכם האכל אתי ימסרני
19 They were distressed and said to him, one after another, 'Not me, surely?'	19 ויחלו להתעצב ויאמרו אליו זה אחר זה הכי אני הוא
20 He said to them, 'It is one of the Twelve, one who is dipping into the same dish with me.	20 ויען ויאמר אליהם אחד משנים העשר הוא הטבל עמי בקערה
21 Yes, the Son of man is going to his fate, as the scriptures say he will, but alas for that man by whomthe Son of man is betrayed! Better for that man if he had never been born.'	21 הן בן האדם הלך ילך כאשר כתוב עליו אבל אוי לאיש ההוא אשר על ידו ימסר בן האדם טוב לאיש ההוא שלא נולד
22 And as they were eating he took bread, and when he had said the blessing he broke it and gave it tothem. 'Take it,' he said, 'this is my body.'	22 ויהי באכלם ויקח ישוע לחם ויברך ויבצע ויתן להם ויאמר קחו אכלו זה הוא גופי
23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he handed it to them, and al drank from it,	23 ויקח את הכוס ויברך ויתן להם וישתו ממנה כלם
24 and he said to them, 'This is my blood, the blood of the covenant, poured out for many.	24 ויאמר להם זה הוא דמי דם הברית החדשה הנשפך בעד רבים
25 In truth I tel you, I shal never drink wine any more until the day I drink the new wine in the kingdomof God.'	25 אמן אמר אני לכם שתה לא אשתה עוד מתנובת הגפן עד היום ההוא אשר אשתה אותה חדשה במלכות האלהים
26 After the psalms had been sung they left for the Mount of Olives.	26 ואחרי גמרם את ההלל ויצאו אל הר הזיתים
27 And Jesus said to them, 'You wil all fal away, for the scripture says: I shal strike the shepherd andthe sheep wil be scattered;	27 ויאמר אליהם ישוע אתם כלכם תכשלו בי בלילה הזה כי כתוב אכה את הרעה ותפוצין הצאן
28 however, after my resurrection I shall go before you into Galilee.'	28 ואחרי קומי מן המתים אלך לפניכם הגלילה
29 Peter said, 'Even if all fal away, I wil not.'	29 ויאמר אליו פטרוס גם אם כלם יכשלו אני לא אכשל
30 And Jesus said to him, 'In truth I tel you, this day, this very night, before the cock crows twice, youwil have disowned me three times.'	30 ויאמר אליו ישוע אמן אמר אני לך כי היום בלילה הזה בטרם יקרא התרנגול פעמים אתה תכחש בי שלש פעמים
31 But he repeated stil more earnestly, 'If I have to die with you, I wil never disown you.' And they allsaid the same.	31 והוא התחזק ויוסף לדבר ויאמר גם כי יהיה עלי למות אתך כחש לא אכחש בך וכן אמרו גם כלם
32 They came to a plot of land cal ed Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, 'Stay here while I pray.'	32 ויבאו אל חצר גת שמני שמו ויאמר אל תלמידיו שבו לכם פה עד אשר אתפלל
33 Then he took Peter and James and John with him.	33 ויקח אתו את פטרוס ואת יעקב ואת יוחנן ויחל להשמים ולמוג
34 And he began to feel terror and anguish. And he said to them, 'My soul is sorrowful to the point ofdeath. Wait here, and stay awake.'	34 ויאמר אליהם נפשי מרה לי עד מות עמדו פה ושקדו
35 And going on a little further he threw himself on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, thishour might pass him by.	35 ויעבר משם מעט והלאה ויפל ארצה ויתפלל אשר אם יוכל היות תעבר נא מעליו השעה הזאת
36 'Abba, Father!' he said, 'For you everything is possible. Take this cup away from me. But let it be asyou, not I, would have it.'	36 ויאמר אבא אבי הכל תוכל העבר נא מעלי את הכוס הזאת אך לא את אשר אני רוצה כי אם את אשר אתה
37 He came back and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, 'Simon, are you asleep? Had you notthe strength to stay awake one hour?	37 ויבא וימצאם ישנים ויאמר אל פטרוס שמעון התישן הכי לא יכלת לשקד שעה אחת
38 Stay awake and pray not to be put to the test. The spirit is wil ing enough, but human nature is weak.'	38 שקדו והתפללו פן תבאו לידי נסיון הן הרוח היא חפצה והבשר רפה
39 Again he went away and prayed, saying the same words.	39 ויסף לסור ויתפלל באמרו עוד הפעם כדברים ההמה
40 And once more he came back and found them sleeping, their eyes were so heavy; and they couldfind no answer for him.	40 וישב וימצאם שנית ישנים כי עיניהם היו כבדות ולא ידעו מה יענהו
41 He came back a third time and said to them, 'You can sleep on now and have your rest. It is al over.The hour has come. Now the Son of man is to be betrayed into the hands of sinners.	41 ויבא פעם שלישית ויאמר אליהם מעתה נומו ונוחו רב לי כי באה השעה הנה בן האדם נמסר בידי חטאים
42 Get up! Let us go! My betrayer is not far away.'	42 קומו ונלכה הנה המוסר אותי קרב
43 And at once, while he was stil speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, came up and with him a numberof men armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.	43 עודנו מדבר ויהודה בא והוא אחד משנים העשר ועמו המון רב בחרבות ובמקלות מאת הכהנים הגדולים והסופרים והזקנים
44 Now the traitor had arranged a signal with them saying, 'The one I kiss, he is the man. Arrest him,and see he is well guarded when you lead him away.'	44 והמוסר אתו נתן להם אות לאמר האיש אשר אשקהו זה הוא אותו תפשו והוליכהו אל ימלט
45 So when the traitor came, he went up to Jesus at once and said, 'Rabbi!' and kissed him.	45 הוא בא והוא נגש אליו ויאמר רבי רבי וינשק לו
46 The others seized him and arrested him.	46 וישלחו בו את ידיהם ויתפשהו
47 Then one of the bystanders drew his sword and struck out at the high priest's servant and cut off hisear.	47 ואחד מן העמדים אצלו שלף את חרבו ויך את עבד הכהן הגדול ויקצץ את אזנו
48 Then Jesus spoke. 'Am I a bandit,' he said, 'that you had to set out to capture me with swords andclubs?	48 ויען ישוע ויאמר אליהם כמו על פריץ יצאתם עלי בחרבות ובמקלות לתפשני
49 I was among you teaching in the Temple day after day and you never laid a hand on me. But this isto fulfil the scriptures.'	49 ויום יום הייתי אצלכם מלמד במקדש ולא החזקתם בי אבל למען ימלאו הכתובים
50 And they al deserted him and ran away.	50 ויעזבו אותו כלם וינוסו
51 A young man fol owed with nothing on but a linen cloth. They caught hold of him,	51 ונער אחד הלך אחריו מעטף בסדין לכסות את ערותו ויאחזהו הנערים
52 but he left the cloth in their hands and ran away naked.	52 והוא עזב את הסדין בידם וינס ערם מפניהם
53 They led Jesus off to the high priest; and all the chief priests and the elders and the scribesassembled there.	53 ויוליכו את ישוע אל הכהן הגדול ויקהלו אתו כל הכהנים הגדולים והזקנים והסופרים
54 Peter had followed him at a distance, right into the high priest's palace, and was sitting with theattendants warming himself at the fire.	54 ופטרוס הלך אחריו מרחוק עד לחצר הכהן הגדול פנימה וישב שם עם המשרתים ויתחמם נגד האור
55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus in order to havehim executed. But they could not find any.	55 וראשי הכהנים וכל הסנהדרין בקשו עדות על ישוע להמיתו ולא מצאו
56 Several, indeed, brought false witness against him, but their evidence was conflicting.	56 כי רבים ענו בו עדות שקר אך העדיות לא היו שות
57 Some stood up and submitted this false evidence against him,	57 ויקומו אנשים ויענו בו עדות שקר לאמר
58 'We heard him say, "I am going to destroy this Temple made by human hands, and in three daysbuild another, not made by human hands." '	58 שמענו אתו אמר אני אהרס את ההיכל הזה מעשה ידי אדם ולשלשת ימים אבנה היכל אחר אשר איננו מעשה ידי אדם
59 But even on this point their evidence was conflicting.	59 וגם בזאת עדותם לא שותה
60 The high priest then rose before the whole assembly and put this question to Jesus, 'Have you noanswer to that? What is this evidence these men are bringing against you?'	60 ויקם הכהן הגדול ויעמד בתוך וישאל את ישוע לאמר האינך משיב דבר מה זה אלה ענים בך
61 But he was silent and made no answer at all. The high priest put a second question to him saying,'Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?'	61 והוא החריש ולא השיב דבר ויוסף עוד הכהן הגדול לשאל אתו ויאמר אליו האתה הוא המשיח בן המברך
62 'I am,' said Jesus, 'and you wil see the Son of man seated at the right hand of the Power and comingwith the clouds of heaven.'	62 ויאמר ישוע אני הוא ואתם תראו את בן האדם יושב לימין הגבורה ובא עם ענני השמים
63 The high priest tore his robes and said, 'What need of witnesses have we now?	63 ויקרע הכהן הגדול את בגדיו ויאמר מה לנו עוד לבקש עדים
64 You heard the blasphemy. What is your finding?' Their verdict was unanimous: he deserved to die.	64 שמעתם את הגדוף מה דעתכם וירשיעהו כלם כי חיב מיתה הוא
65 Some of them started spitting at his face, hitting him and saying, 'Play the prophet!' And theattendants struck him too.	65 ויחלו מהם לרק בו ויחפו את פניו ויכהו באגרף ויאמרו אליו הנבא והמשרתים הכאיבהו בהכותם אותו על הלחי
66 While Peter was down below in the courtyard, one of the high priest's servant-girls came up.	66 ויהי בהיות פטרוס בתחתית החצר ותבא אחת משפחות הכהן הגדול
67 She saw Peter warming himself there, looked closely at him and said, 'You too were with Jesus, theman from Nazareth.'	67 ותרא את פטרוס כי מתחמם הוא ותבט בו ותאמר גם אתה היית עם הנצרי ישוע
68 But he denied it. 'I do not know, I do not understand what you are talking about,' he said. And hewent out into the forecourt, and a cock crowed.	68 ויכחש לאמר לא אדע ולא אבין מה את אמרת ויצא החוצה אל האולם והתרנגל קרא
69 The servant-girl saw him and again started tel ing the bystanders, 'This man is one of them.'	69 ותראהו השפחה ותוסף ותאמר אל העמדים שם כי זה הוא אחד מהם ויכחש פעם שנית
70 But again he denied it. A little later the bystanders themselves said to Peter, 'You are certainly one ofthem! Why, you are a Galilean.'	70 וכמעט אחרי כן גם העמדים שם אמרו אל פטרוס אמנם אתה אחד מהם כי אף גלילי אתה ולשונך כלשונם
71 But he started cursing and swearing, 'I do not know the man you speak of.'	71 ויחל להחרים את נפשו ולהשבע לאמר לא יעדתי את האיש הזה אשר אמרתם
72 And at once the cock crowed for the second time, and Peter recalled what Jesus had said to him,'Before the cock crows twice, you will have disowned me three times.' And he burst into tears.	72 והתרנגל קרא פעם שנית ויזכר פטרוס את הדבר אשר אמר לו ישוע בטרם יקרא התרנגל פעמים תכחש בי שלש פעמים וישם אל לבו ויבך
